@@Sebatech ive been subscribed to you since you started basically and I was excited to see how your channel would grow but now I see you havent posted in over a year. R.i.p
Thanks man!! Glad to be back too and great to see you sticking around. I have some specific content lined up, and now that I'm getting closed to done with applying to colleges and handling some senior midterms, I should be able to speed up my schedule by a lot!
I just finished this board! It's a steep learning curve and after I had typed out a whole long comment on this video I accidently tpyed some shortcut to refresh the page and lost, so we are back on the ol' Suit. Anyways, great vid! The really funny thing about this vid is that I stumbled upon it after searching vids that would help me learn qmk and set up the OLED screen. (It currently doesn't seem to be working. Sad.) I don't know why this came up, but I'm glad it did! If you know how to use qmk, I would watch the shit out of tutorial. I know it's not exactly the style of this channel (based on this video at least) but hot damn do I need a good tutorial. I have bugled up so much during this build, but overall, I am proud of it. (I wish I had known about those kinds of hot swap sockets before solding all my switches in... Probably gunna be a bitch to trouble shoot the OLED issue...)
Wow yeah, when I was communicating with Fruit after first building the “w” and “q” keys were inverted and the “s” and “d” keys were too. So I ended up typing many messages and switching to other keyboards, many times while typing 😂. If I find out how to better use QMK or do fun stuff with the OLED, I would be happy to make a followup video/Short about it, kind of similar to the modding follow up to that original Tofu65. And yes, the hotswap sockets are good to have 😅. Good luck finding a tutorial in the meantime, and feel free to share one with me if you do!
I think that cheap 40%'s are good but after using my Mechwild Mercutio for a bit, I already feel like upgrading just because it doesn't feel high quality despite the way it looks. I think that 40% is great for budget users, but if you have the money for something higher quality then you will have a much better time
Yeah, I found this to be a project much more about the tinkering than being a top of the line board. This is like one of the only boards actually that hasn't had aluminum for me i.e. the plate, case, etc. At the very least it was a great and fun experience learning to solder better and stuff haha. Probably won't become my daily driver, but it will be hard to give up that white one :)
I mean i got a 60 euros 40 (shipping not included cuz that was hell) and it is both nice, maybe not the best sounding but still nice, and perfectly functional so i feel like 40s do have a lower cost of entry than other customs.
I've got one question why you soldered diodes on the wrong side? I mean with tht elements you solder on the oposite site where you putting them. Or I'm don't know something.
the magic of 40% keyboard, you don't need number row ah yes, I have been using 40% for a while, I don't need arrow cluster, macro keys, spacbar and alphas either
Oh man... sorry to hear that. Is it really bad? If you're interested we could work out some kind of trade with my second board's bottom plate since it's not functional at the moment :/. Join the discord if you can and we can talk there about it if you're interested.
@@Sebatech I greatly appreciate the offer, but I think I will pass. If anything, I can use it as an opportunity to build a case for the PCB that is gasket mounted or something out of wood. I really do appreciate it, you are too kind. I'll join the discord later today for fun though.
@@linuxinstalled Awesome man. Let me know if the case goes well, I'd love to see it. I'm thinking about MAYBE having one CNC'd and then doing a burger mount if I can figure out dimensions and all. Could be sick.
Glad I'm not the only one who needed spare parts :p. I used 3305 sockets and put them on switches first; I agree sockets are actually super satisfying to solder. Didn't you have clearance issues with the bottom plate? I had to add ORings between plates and standoffs.
did you just put your solder iron and solder on the side where you can see the diode? Ur supposed to solder the other side. I mean u aint putting the solderiron between bottom case of the switch and pcb right?
I KNEW I would get asked that... everyone seems to love it. It's the Ramen Slurp one from Plop Labs, picked it up from KBDFans. Shipping cost more than it to the US, but I was getting some other stuff with it in the order so I went with it.
I used two pairs of pliers to bend it gently in opposite directions, and an old phone screen as a flat surface, tapping it very gently after every adjustment until there was no or virtually no click. When there's no click, it means that the wires are not bent in different directions at all.
That’s all good 😂 It’s a little hard getting used to the 40% number typing layer, esp. for gaming, but it’s fun and I GUESS more “portable”. Probably won’t be daily driving a 40 for now tho
@@Sebatech ha, yeah, although it does fit some peoples aesthetics, and does makes ones setup more "minimal", its more of a look than function keyboard, which even though it "does" work, I feel using like a 65% or a tkl works a lot better if you need more desk space, while keeping a good function
@@kubs216 yeah I completely agree there. Ironically, as a gamer, it's not that efficient at saving mouse space because it's as long as most TKL's but just thinner from top to bottom than a 60%, if that makes sense. Like, it reaches further into my mouse space than my Tofu65 does lol. WoB on white does make for a clean board tho!
finally something unique
Right?! I was like dang, something that doesn't rely purely on hot terms like gasket or heck even 65%. Really fun little project in the end.

Got into this GB too! Quick question, did your OLED light up immediately after flashing or did you have to perform additional steps?
iirc, I didn’t do any extra steps beyond flashing. It shows what layer I’m typing on like function

does this board come with stabs?

I ended up solderin them all on the right side, not sure if one of the clips was soldering on the wrong side
you were supposed to clip the two fat pins on the side of the rotary knob if you dont on some boards it can mess up the plate fitment
Oh shoot. The plate seemed to fit over it fine, is it gonna cause damage?
@@Sebatech probably not but if it scratches the pcb it can cause shorts

just for those wondering, I think he means pin-headers whenever he mentions vias. regardless, pretty good video. 👍

1 week
