  • An infectious diseases specialist explains what sepsis is and how it is diagnosed in acute care. Which scoring system should you use? How does SIRS compare to qSOFA? What are the most dangerous mistakes in the diagnosis of sepsis? In this video, you will learn how the definition of sepsis changed in 2016 and what this means for our everyday practice. More importantly, you will learn about the dangerous limitations of qSOFA. More and more research articles show that this scoring system isn't nearly as helpful as intended. Clinical reasoning doesn't have to be complicated, but it cannot be condensed into something as trivial as qSOFA. If you are a student or a junior doctor and want to learn how to approach a patient with a suspected infection, I strongly recommend you follow the link to my series of lectures on this topic. You will get the basics right, and what you learn in this course will help you make the best possible decision in any clinical setting.

I want to remind everyone that my videos are for educational purposes only. Of course, everyone is welcome to watch, but the information I present is most useful for junior doctors, nurses, and students. As I stated in the description of every video and on my channel homepage, none of this is medical advice for patients. I don't practice medicine over the internet. If you are a patient and have any questions about your health, please get in touch with your doctor.

Had this at my local hospital, ive had an abscess multiple times without antibiotics and a few days ago I started getting serious dizziness and pain everywhere. I went on the ambulance to the hospital and said I was concerned that I might be going into sepsis and I was told that their computer said that I didnt meet the criteria for sepsis so they wouldnt do any further testing to see. Another nurse told me that im obviously not in sepsis because im not grey and so exhausted that I cant move. I cant believe how much hospitals are saying now that they wont treat until your obviously on your deathbed.

Interesting take. What are you thoughts on expanding from qSOFA to full SOFA? Do you think that SOFA is better screening tool than SIRS?

That's what I thought too. What about SOFA score which I'm willing to know from his perspective.

My sister died of sepsis. She was WAITING FOR 2 HOURS for the tests to come back. It was too late!! They could have saved her, I think. Should we start a malpractice complaint???
