As someone who’s been living abroad for about 6 years now, it is very weird and unsettling sometimes. I went home for the first time last year and I could barely recognize things. I felt like a foreigner in my hometown, and now I’m like “did I really go home or was it a dream?”
    It’s definitely a weird feeling.

10:35 On top of the fact that all these Japanese people speak perfect English, a hunch and a quick Google search confirmed that Yuki is played by Harry Shum Jr, aka Mike Chang from Glee (one of my favorite Glee characters). He was born in Costa Rica, but his parents were Chinese immigrants. His first language is Spanish, though he hasn’t spoken it fluently since he was 6, then he learned Cantonese (a Chinese dialect for those who don’t know) and English.

In regards to Alex's last question it does happen, whenever I found like an old notebook or see a picture of me and my highschool friends I look back and think "Wow I used to do so many weird stuff" or "I can't believe this thing was so popular back then", it does bring the feeling of some sort of evolution, I guess that's part of growing up.

@Mi-Ae Hwang I mean...you're right. Japanese shows (usually comedy variety shows) portray western culture pretty badly too. However from what I noticed, they don't usually have a full episode/special revolving around it. So the cringiness doesn't last very long. It's just one or two gags and then move on to the next bit on a different topic.

Because people couldn't go to Japan, there's just a unique foreigness/exoticism to Japan and it was not affected as much by colonialism (like their culture wasn't changed significantly by western countries). It doesn't help that everything that came through seemed very weird or unique (or it was the fact that it was different because again, not westernized) like Takeshi's castle or Japanese tv ads or anime. Recently it's because we're all weebs but there's also just a butt load of things to do in Japan that is not shown in any of these American tv shows. @G-Taehyung There is always a bit of culture shock when moving to a new country. I had lived in Korea for 3 years prior to Japan so I was used to moving to a new country. I would say the biggest cultural thing in Japan is repressed feelings. People never truly say their feelings so you never know where you stand with them. That seems like it would be a good thing as you'd never hear anything negative but it can also be extremely frustrating too. I continue to enjoy the food, the music and the beautiful scenery, the mountains, etc. That being said, when the three main flavors of food are soy, miso and salt, it gets old after the first few years. These days, I make my own food and try to eat more western things that aren't so bland.

My dad watched this with us growing up. He still watches it with my younger brother. He's a 63 year old mexican man. Like, born on the dirt floor in the village his family lived in, getting up at 430 am to work in the corn fields instead of going to school at 8 years old so the rest of his siblings could get an education. Like dirt poor village at the foot of a mountain, where like 80 other families live in the village and for 200 years they've had the same 1 building that is the school Monday to Saturday and the church on Sunday.
What im getting at is that iCarly transcends pop culture or nostalgia. iCarly is just good funny fun

I’m 33 and lived in 2 different countries before moving back to my hometown after almost 9 years. Really feels like it happened to someone else or that the lives I had in other places didn’t really happened. Nice to hear that I’m not the only one feeling like that.

I can’t believe you didn’t include the one line that relates the most to you Alex
    “The pain helps you learn”
    I could imagine you going
_Yeah that’s what I told myself for years, and I turned out just great_

I went to a boarding school halfway across the world from where I live and that's exactly how I feel! The whole thing ended just as suddenly as it started, and since coming back home Ive tried explaining it to a few people. The only way i could describe it was that it felt like a dream and had never really happened, but they didnt seem to really get it. Its been a couple years and its still crazy to think about. Like, how did that happen??
Its weird to leave and go do something completely different and then come back and have to get readjusted to place you grew up in

The synergy is pretty amazing. A reviewer who lived a decade in Japan, commenting on a show going to Japan, sponsored by snacks from Japan? That's the hat trick!

I did rewatch the show recently and it surprisingly still made me laugh and had good jokes in it, despite certain things being written by a creep that didn’t age well, I still found the show to be entertaining. I think this episode specifically was over exaggerating for the sake of comedy and some of the lines just sounded more ignorant than straight up racist.
