      @NinjaRider777R I think that back in the mid 1980s when this movie came out, it was one of the longest movies of the time. The producers probably thought that people wouldn't be willing to sit through a movie that was even longer than it already was cut to. Obviously, for home release, that's not a problem.

      @@amberyooper Not true, there were many movies that were 3 hours long or more before this. Godfather, Deer Hunter, the Twelve Commandments, Greatest Story Ever Told, Lawrence Of Arabia, Barry Lyndon and quite a few others. It was a Producer/studio decision but the wrong one. Oddly enough in the same year Once Upon A Time In America was cut for US theatrical release from the original 3 hour+ version and also butchered and ruined, luckily Once Upon A Time had the full version released in Europe so people knew there was a real version out there too, shame we never saw Lynch's Director's cut.

      Yeah, Prog Rock is really the best kind of music for Dune. Real old school European Prog from the early days, not the watered down stuff we got in the eighties. Jodorowsky wanted bands like Magma and Gong to do the music for his failed version of Dune and I can't help but wonder how it would have sounded. The music for the 2021 version had some interesting ideas, like using throat music for the Sadaukar and bagpipes as the battle theme of the Atreides, but on the whole it just didn't feel weird and out there enough for me. A bit too conventional.

      The first two acts aren't too bad, a bit clunky but not terrible. The whole thing falls apart for me though the moment Paul and his mother meet up with the Freemen. Everything after that point is so insultingly rushed along from him rising through the ranks and becoming their leader, his relationship with Chani, him taming the Sandworm to his eventual overthrow of the Harkonnens and making himself Emperor. Then you hear how Lynch wanted the film to be over three hours but the studio told him to cut down the run time really explains a lot why the third act's pacing is so rushed.

    Knowing the fremen culture, I would imagine dumping water on the ground in front of them like that would be one of the most absolutely disrespectful things you could do. I was going to say it would be like lighting a cigar with hundred dollar bills, but water for the fremen is MUCH more precious than money is to (most of) us. Maybe it would be like going to Africa where everyone is starving and taking several crates of food rations and lighting them on fire.. Keeping eye contact the whole time you are doing it. But considering how water is so precious, they literally render ounces (probably less than he dumped out here) out of their dead and "giving your water" for the clan is considered an honor and duty. So what he did would be like throwing away a clan member's final and most precious offering after death. I love how the book made me think about things so differently

      All true, I felt the same thing from this scene but like others have said Leto was ignorant of the culture entirely and this was a clumsy gesture on his part. To add to this though it also foreshadowed his own precious water that would be lost soon after, so I don't think the scene loses any value or credibility to the story.

    These deleted scenes should've been left in!! I also know that during an interview, one of the DeLaurentis family (Dino's Granddaughter(?)) dispelled the myth that half the movie ended up on the cutting room floor. It was just a handful of scenes--maybe an hour total--but they were great scenes, and their removal wrecked the flow of the story. Too bad.
    I had never even seen this film until recently when I saw it on my "free movies" list on cable, but I fell in love with its weirdness; a "so ugly it's beautiful" sort of thing. I know it's been said a million times by a lot of "Dune" fans, but I honestly think this film could've been amazing.
    Also, with Hollywood doing so many remakes that there's a small possibility somebody could remake the film again someday. I know one amateur production house did--and an awful job they did of it too. But in reality it will likely go down in history as just another really bad movie.

    This baliset melody nearly sounds like it could be a song by The Police. I almost thought Sting or his band mates had something to do with it until I just learned that it was composed by someone else. It's part of the song "Back Yard" by Emmett Chapman, and it's played with a Chapman Stick. Even so, the baliset's musical chords reminds me of the electric guitar riffs from The Police's "De Do Do Do, Da Da Da Da." After saying that, I now wish The Police or Emmett Chapman got to do their own soundtracks for a Dune movie.
    In all seriousness, this scene should've remained in Lynch's Dune. We got to see Gurney use the baliset, Liet Kynes got to play Stilgar's role from the book by allying with the Atreides, and Duke Leto showed his respect for Kynes' customs. Duke Leto poured an awful lot of water on the floor, which may have alarmed Kynes, but I guess that was Leto's way of showing that he was prepared to go all in with the Fremen.

    • @OreadNYC
      @OreadNYC 4 роки тому

      On some level, however, it actually makes more sense given the time constraints to have Kynes do this given his position within Fremen society and especially since he already had a reason to be there. In order to have Stilgar do it, another entire sequence would have needed to be filmed giving Stilgar a pretext for being there.

    1. The music is a bit silly, and reminiscent of Spock playing his Vulcan lyre in Star Trek.
