For Kato's first 009 models, they are incredibly detailed models. They really took their time to make sure they modeled the engines one-to-one with the real life locomotives. While I can't say Kato did the box much justice in terms of looks, I can definitely say the model itself is amazing

Those aren't alternate whistles,
They're the grab irons that get slotted into the model,
The instructions booklet shows you where to put them, but you can see the holes on the tender and the cylinders at the front,

Great little model you got your hands on. I'm honestly amazed at the precision and quality of the model particularly in it's paintwork and decals considering just how small it is. I think the value for money is a bit dubious however since for the the recently released Acura Scale Class 55 has an RRP of just 10 pounds more and yet it is a much larger model that is just as if not more exquisitely detailed and has top notch mechanism to match.
The pricing makes a lot more sense when you consider A) Kato have to fit a working mechanism into that tiny body, B) OO9 scale is relatively new to the Ready-To-Run market and is still a bit niche, and C) A lot of other OO9 locos cost significantly more.

Just a suggestion : under your ho scale layout you could have a miniature replica of the tallylyn railway. But other then that! Great model review!

A great place to buy the Small Englands including the new green repaints, is Plaza Japan. The conversion from Yen to USD is really good atm and it's about $115 for one loco.

Those aren't whistles it's knobs for like hand rails and snadpots and the tender. Like the entrance of the cab.

I’d say wait for when it goes on sale or if one with less detail put in if you want to make an Duke model. The best compromise would be to put a face on Princess for now.
If its so good don't tempt to make Duke. Just keep the one you have until the right time to get another princess
I don't think the parts breaking off thing was just because of poor shipping quality, only because when I bought my Prince model, I had a hell of a time before I could actually run it like normal. It looked fine out of the box, and when I went to break it in it ran fine going forward for a full 30 minutes. Then I put it in the reverse, it got halfway around the track, and both side rods popped off! Now, they pop back in easy enough, and I've never had them pop off again. Problem is, when they did Pop off, I could only find one of the connecting pins, this little chunk of plastic not even a millimeter long. It rolled off the table and onto the ground, and despite me searching for four. Freaking. Hours, I never found the blasted thing. It's either still somewhere in my carpet or in the vacuum cleaner at this point. Luckily when I went to Kato's website to buy spare parts, they email me back with an apology letter and didn't charge me for the spares. I can at least appreciate them trying to make amends for their screw up.
I was super lucky yesterday as I was able to ride on the real Ffestiniog railway for the first time. Went all the way to the top of the line to see the old slate mines, the scale of them is immense, it was truly a huge operation back in its day. The train I was on was pulled by a Double Fairlie, a really terrific looking engine. I was going to by a Bachmann double Fairlie in the shop, but the price was well over £300. So I bought a princess loco instead, and I’m glad I did. Such a fantastic model

Bruh, I shit you not, as soon as I saw yesterday’s post about this, i believed myself to be in a simulation. Because 20 minutes prior to first seeing said post, I actually bought Prince.

Fantastic model, released by PECO made by Kato. Great pronunciation of the welsh names. The box is printed with bricks to represent the platform and the white rectangles above are representing a face where the Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland logi/sign is hung on the fence. Great engines to ride and bigger than you think in real life. I only live 1 hour away from the Ffestiniog railway and 1 1/2 hours from snowdon mountain railway and 2 hours from talyllyn. And yes im welsh lol. But great to hear someone not butchering welsh names.
Also just an observation, when you talk about gauge 1 and tenmille it's pronounced ten mill not ten mile.

I agree the Small England is worth its weight in gold for looks and performance. I hope KATO will make more OO-9 scale models! (They were supposed to produce the Double Fairlie as well) From the good reviews of this I'm sure it'll also be well-made.
