Supposedly during this era, Martha sewed a pocket into the cape for keeping Superman’s civilian clothes handy. Or a sandwich. That would be a very Mom move. Also explains BVS.They were really good sandwiches.

The cape pocket routinely held Clark's clothes, super-pressed into compact little discs, and his glasses which of course couldn't be compacted but which were pretty indestructible for reasons. Elliot S. Maggin (wait, "S! Maggin") in his Last Son of Krypton novel, has Luthor discover these items and be COMPLETELY BAFFLED why Superman brings along a tough pair of glasses and these weird blue dense-cloth discs. In "real" time, Bruce can only wage this "war" on crime for about five to ten years, but in "comic book time" (and accounting for all the sidekicks and support characters and major events and _blip blap blop)_ it's been going on for decades with little to show for it. People are right to question if cosplaying for a magical thirty hours per day intimidating and/or beating the hell out of people is more about his personal issues than any genuine desire to improve society somewhat.
Today even writers are asking that same question, but the response is to blurt out how Bwayne is also throwing his once-bottomless fortune--currently gone--at youth programs and recovery projects. It's strictly reactionary hand-waving so readers can get back to the terror and broken teeth and knee injuries and slashings.

@@ScreamingScallop I wasn't aware that preventing the city's destruction and the deaths of its inhabitants many times over counts as "little to show for it." The basic premise of Batman is that Gotham city has problems that only Batman can solve. The text has consistently proven that to be true regardless of readers' and writers' questioning.
It may be handwaving but if writers never address Bruce Wayne's contributions to society outside of Batman they'd only warrent these criticisms rather than prevent them. Maybe one day DC'll have faith people will actually read a series about a billionaire going around managing charities without a punch thrown but that clearly isn't today.

Those were comics that I was reading as a kid and I missed all the nuance that you put into your analysis in these videos. I agree with your analyses 99% of the time in relation to superficial plots and questionable personality traits of the heroes as they were portrayed at that time but to me as a 12 year old boy all that you critique seemed benign or I missed altogether. Tbh, I think the best way to do a story about Bruce using his money to help society without disrupting the status quo too much would be for it to fall apart because of massive widespread corruption on every single level of society, making all the charity in the world useless without a complete overhaul of the systems of power which cause the problems. In other words, Batman finding that beating the hell out of white collar crime is far more effective than small, incremental change within the system. You could turn the critique back on the criticizers in one powerful stroke by having it be impossible for capital to save people from the problems created by capital, and only direct action mattering.

The white hair Batman had when he was impersonating that gangster reminds me of the animated series episode The Forgotten where he disguises himself as a homeless person to find out why homeless people are disappearing around Gotham but gets knocked out and loses his memory.

This was a typical story of the time period; silly, and serious, a one shot with noooooo consequences; well worth the 10 or 15 cents on the cover. Every silver age Superman reader knows that the pocket is in the cape, how??? is the true question. Always a superior production dear Sister, with this camera angle as:"just fine"( it is a woman's prerogative to change her look) PEACE, and God bless.0

I read a comic in 1959 or thereabouts where it was explained that Superman has a pouch sewed into the inner lining of his cape. Shout out to all costumers. That's why the real Silver Agers stick around. Data. Details. Deets. My hair (half of it) is actually silver. What needle will penetrate the Kryptonian super-cloth?

Whenever someone brings up the old "Bruce Wayne could do more by investing in public resources and charities than by punching criminals" bit, I like to post the Calvin and Hobbes strip for November 28, 1992.
*Calvin:* I've noticed that comic book superheroes usually fight evil maniacs with grandiose plans to destroy the world.
*Calvin:* Why don't superheroes go after more subtle, realistic bad guys?
*Hobbes:* Yeah, the superhero could attend council meetings and write letters to the editor, and stuff.
*Calvin:* Hmm… I think I see the problem.
    *Hobbes:* "Quick! To the Bat-Fax!"
That said, I'm very excited to see Nightwing handle this sort of plot. As you said, it can be done well.
Oh, Batman got a bump on the head while undercover and now he thinks he really is a criminal. That also happened in an episode of Batman: The Brave And The Bold. It was in the Birds of Prey episode. The one that only aired in Australia because of all the sexual innuendo. Look up "batman birds of prey song" to see what I mean.
A zany story I like is All-Star Comics №30 from 1946. Brain Wave traps the JSA in utterly surreal dreams. It's a trip.
