I tried this app. It looks easy BUT my backup is on Google drive under Storage. The app does not see sms in the storage section ,only my photos .I can't navigate to get to the Storage section of Google Drive. Am I missing something? When I'm on google drive, I can't even move the file under storage. I can only preview it or delete it. Any suggestions? My old SMS messages are there . When I did my Android phone back up and factory reset , my google account only restored my contacts and photos

Follow the steps as instructed to complete the restore. Then the app instructs to set the default SMS app back. I opened the SMS app and was prompted for the change. Then it takes a few seconds for it to open the restored data.

Thank you. This worked perfectly. I transferred from an LG Android to a Google Pixel 3a. All messages and call logs moved over just fine with SMS Backup.
You have to switch temporarily to that Messaging app then switch back... you can only have 1 active Messaging app on the phone at 1 time... sort of like you can't have multiple Phone apps at the same time, for example.
I assume that the data is 1) transferred to a cloud account from the old phone 2) the old phone is disabled by switching SIMS card or some such process 3) the new phone is activated and 4) the data is downloaded to the new phone. Is this right? I am a rookie.

Yes. Your sim controls the phone number, and phone features, such as phone dialing and texting. without the sim your "phone" is just a tablet.
