Alright, here's all that needs to happen: Let us listen in to the replay booth talking to the officials on the field. That's it. If we can hear that conversation we'll all understand what it is they see, and there will be no misunderstandings of how an official missed a call.

For real. I'm over here like, does anyone else see what's wrong with this? There was no call on the field. They just delayed the call and let a reply assistant make the call. Why not make the call and allow it to be challenged? This also does create additional opportunity for game results to be favored in one direction or another.

Yup first thing that came to my mind... mostly because that was the only game I watched last week. Also there was a first down catch ruled no-catch for the Jets as well (the big toe strikes again!), which I think lead to a turn over on downs. At first I thought it was cool because it was like a challenge flag, not necessarily overturning the penalty just whether or not it was a forward pass which in turn invalidates the penalty, but glad to see they can overturn knee jerk flags from refs.

It was the worst officiated game I have seen a long long while. If it was called fairly, I think the Steelers win that something like 29-3.

It seems like the NFL uses the refs to sway games, especially when you see things like Taylor Swift bringing in 300 million and a massive ratings boost.. they are a business, after all and business was very good. To anyone comparing the refereeing situation of the Patriots back in the day to the Chiefs now, no one has benefited more from the COORDINATED and CONSISTENT NFL help that the Chiefs have had. The old Patriots were not marketable to the NFL. They were considered boring. They were not flashing Taylor Swift and Mahomes' sidearm/behind the back throws while constantly talking up "GOAT" status in the media. The Patriots, as dictated by their head coach, were boring for the media, and didn't really speak to them. Their QB was somewhat interesting, but that basically took until 2007 for it to happen because he never cared about stats and just did what was needed to win. Then opponents began doing some dumb things against the Patriots and Brady, with fans conflating those mistakes with "bad calls" as reasons for losses. Not running with Marshawn Lynch, Kyle Shanahan not running, other teams choking because of Brady's aura. Of course, just like every other team, they did benefit from bad calls, but they just capitalized on them. If you actually look at the calls, though, Brady ranks in the middle to bottom of roughing the passer calls. The same is true of other stats.
The Patriots had one very lucky tuck rule play in 2001 that was technically called correctly but just not explained correctly on the field, then became hated over 20 years during which time they had lots of mixed good and bad luck including Helmet Catch, Mario Manningham, Welker Drop, Brady ACL tear, Gronk's injuries, Hernandez being what he was, etc. People got tired of them and ignored their bad luck and only focused on the good calls they got, but this happened OVER 20 years of ACCUMULATED SUCCESS. That's nothing like the Chiefs only being in the league for SIX YEARS and getting NOTHING but favorable calls EVERY playoff run against ALL of your rivals. Being allowed to hold in every Super Bowl and playoff game (ESPECIALLY ON 3rd AND LONG), getting roughing the passers/late hit out of bounds/defensive holdings in the MOST CRUCIAL moments of the games WHILE IT NOT BEING CALLED THE SAME WAY FOR THE OPPONENT.
As far as the 2018 AFCCG between Chiefs/Pats, there were significantly more favorable calls for the chiefs/mahomes, but since everyone hated the patriots back then, none of the pro chiefs calls are highlighted in retrospect. romo pointed some out in the broadcast, like the pick play obvious OPI for a TD late in the 4th quarter to take the lead. meanwhile, the call that everyone references (the roughing the passer on brady) came on second down and was accompanied by an UNCALLED DPI on edelman, so it should have been automatic first down ANYWAYS. had ZERO impact. as far as the offsides on dee ford, that was a CORRECT call. patriots were the ones who got jobbed with chiefs fans shining a green laser in brady's eyes much of the game without repercussion.
So, bottom, line, these two things are not equal. The sample size of the Chiefs getting this ref help over such few seasons is UNPRECEDENTED. It took over a decade for people to view Brady and the Patriots that way, and frankly the evidence doesn't actually support the conclusions like it does for the Chiefs.

You didn't think it was a little weird that Captain America dominated the NFL and remained ascendent for the duration of the post 9/11 War on Terror... ...on the Red, White, and Blue team... ...called the Patriots?
I agree with your point though - the NFL needs women on board for domestic growth, hence Swift, and "lucky" calls helping the Chiefs. imo
I also think a lot of calls that helped the Patriots were perceived to be wrong by casual fans, but were correct according to the rules. ...because Belichek served on the Rules Committee and researched opportunities within the rules. That's not cheating though, that's just brains and hard work.
Otoh, the Chiefs get calls and non-calls that are blatantly incorrect and then they cut to the luxury box where the only people that count sometimes watch a play. 2+2=5

@@skyzoffbloo630 That was definitely true in 2001 when fans the even the NFL promoted the Patriots because of the 9/11 attack combined with the fact that the Pats were underdogs, but very quickly after that, there was fatigue with the Patriots as a team because more than half the country was against how the War on Terror was handled, and since they were no longer underdogs.
The thing is, the Chiefs consistently get favorable calls during the regular season to win the division and help seeding IN ADDITION to obvious calls during the playoffs. It's unprecedented. Every year, we forget about major calls they get in close games like last year against the Jets when the ref threw a defensive holding flag late in the fourth quarter AFTER Mahomes threw a horrible INT on 3rd and 20. So, the ref waited for the result of the play to throw it, and the contact was marginal at best. There were multiple calls that led to losses by the Chargers/Raiders/Broncos as well. Then in the playoffs, there's the extra down against the Bengals, the Mahomes flop out of bounds leading to late hit guaranteeing a win vs. late hit not being called for Burrow earlier. The Eagles defensive holding that handed the Super Bowl to the Chiefs. Two Niners Super Bowls in which the Chiefs' o-line was allowed to hold with no call. Donovan Smith was one of the most egregious holders in the league with the Bucs and Brady the year before, but suddenly he was not called for it with Mahomes and the Chiefs.

@@knowyourenemy50 It's true that I was rooting for the Pats the first year - never a Pats fan, but I really liked Steve Grogan and Russ Francis back in the day so that kinda' greased the wheels. I like the "punch them in the mouth, help them stand back up" football from that era and Francis was exactly that guy.
I didn't see the Bengals p/o game, but my son did and he still can't get over how badly the Bengals got jobbed. He's not a Bengals fan, you know, but he mentioned some of what you did about that game also. I counted at least four egregious o-holds last week where a ref had line of sight. I know there's probably a penalty on every play, but c'mon, at least pretend you're calling a fair game.

I think a incentive based bonus/pay model should be used for the ref. Every game is filmed from several angles, hire a team to re-watch each game and look for missed and correct calls for each ref. They should be paid better if their performance is better. But you can't make it a scale where they get paid more for more calls, it needs to be percentage based on their correctness and efficacy of not missing calls. (example is the helmet pulles off najee in week one with no call) everyone saw that within seconds due to the Instant replay of the down and thats not cool to miss.
