I picked up this game last week and absolutely fell in love with it. I consistently find myself engrossed in its story and gameplay as if I’m reading a good book. Radiant Historia is exactly what I look for when I buy a new JRPG.
Just finished the game. It's one of the best if not the best JRPG I've ever played, so addictive battle system and great story with realistic characters writing .. This game deserves much more love :(
I have been watching this game closely and have been on the fence about picking it up. This video was the final tipping point I needed to buy the game. I plan on picking it up at some point this week. Excellent video!
ATLUS has been the king of the hill of JRPGs since the PS2 days. The titles that they develop are consistently great - SMT, Persona, Etrian Odyssey, Radiant Historia - and they are awesome publishers as well. They have localized the original Disgaea, Demon Souls, Odin Sphere, Dragon's Crown...
I just recently played this too, and it's fantastic. If you like the time travel mechanic, check out Zero Escape. Granted, it's a VN not an RPG, but it's amazing.
Dark Pixel Gaming Cool. It's actually a trilogy. The first two games were recently re-released in a package called The Nonary Games with several QoL improvents, so check that out if possible. The order is: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors (999) Virtue's Last Reward Zero Time Dilemma Originally, VLR was the first to introduce the flowchart (very similar to that of Radiant Historia) that allows you to freely traverse the many timelines of parallel worlds. In the re-release bundle, that flowchart was also added to 999.
Oh nice, I have a lot to look into then! BTW, the video I was wanting to release this week was based on some research I was doing into self-affirmation studies, motivated reasoning, and how people form individual opinions and feel the need to fight over them online. Maybe you could provide some insight since you have a background in psychology. Do you have any interest?
man, for whatever reason nintendo has much more success with RPGs on their handheld consoles than their TV consoles. no idea why developers made so many rpgs on limited hardware, and not the gamecube, Wii, Wii U, etc. the GBA/DS/3DS RPG and side scrolling library is HUGE.
I love Radiant Historia too, especially the combat Shame no one really talking about this game, probably not going to have any sequel too with this kind of popularity
Radiant Historia is one of the greatest jrpg's off all time, possibly in my top 4 alongside P4G and P5 and Xenogears. Tonally, the game has a mixture of the darker, more mature politics of Game of Thrones, The Witcher series and a Yasumi Matsuno game. With the time traveling, universe switching and cause and effect of the Zero Escape series, with also of hints of the Chrono games. What amazes me is that almost all of the characters both hero's and villains. Are written 3 dimensionally, I particularly like Heiss. He is very reminiscent to characters like Robert Ford from Westworld, Johnny Sack from The Sopranos and Littlefinger. He shares Robert Ford's nihilism and duplicity, while also having the manipulation skills and machivellism of Littlefinger and Johnny Sack. With that being said, which ever version you play your getting a great game. While I love the 3ds version, I am alittle disappointed by some of atlus practices for including dlc. I also wish that the remake included the original in the same vein as Odin sphere. Anyways I love this game and like this video illustrates I recommend checking the game out.
Thanks for the like on my comment. I really like your channel and the professional approach to reviewing your games. As you can see I'm also huge fan of HBO haha. Anyway I would love to here your thoughts on Tactics Ogre Let us Cling Together or Vagrant Story (I'm a big fan of Matsuno's games).
I feel that mature and serious games are very hard to nail down, because not only asking for players to be serious, but they need to be themselves not take any aspect of their design lightly. Since PS3/X360 era, many pop culture things (movies, TV and Games) went all serious and gritty, but very rarely did they actually feel serious. In fact many feel _tiring_ after watching/playing them. I too feel the same with you. Radiant Historia is a standard for me, (and in my very biased opinion, should be the standard for video games in general). Sure you'll have you fun games and not many care for ludonarrative dissonance, but if gaming as a medium needs to be taken seriously, we will need a lot more mature games.
I couldn't agree more...The thing I've noticed is that we conflate "adult themes" with actual maturity especially with American made RPG's over the last 10 years. It's just my opinion but blood, guts, and poorly acted sex scenes are not really what I consider mature.
I'm generally with you on the first point, but I can't say the same about the second. Fuck making art because some close minded ass hats who don't understand Sturgeon's law "need" to be impressed. There's a heavy implication here that a piece needs to be serious to be mature which is what has led to the situation where such superficially mature art is made and has only driven away the people it was meant to cater to. The most mature thing a work of art needs to do is be proud to be itself and such works exist in vast quantities when it comes to video games. Anyone who either dismisses them or has such a strict view of what could be considered meaningful aren't worth the time of anyone who actually cares about the medium.
NuclearUnicorn7 I think this comment was what I needed. I was wasn't thinking sensibly when I wrote my comment. I agree with you, the superficial ones do bring a bad image to the medium. As I said, this was a very biased and selfish wish, and also don't overlook the important "serious" games. That said, I certainly do wish gamers to cross a certain threshold and try out more of these complex and serious games, just to grasp what can this medium offer. Also, can you elaborate on the Strugeon's Law comment?
Thanks for the recommendation Mike. You've talked this game up so much that I think I'm going to have to check it out now. Altus is definitely the king of JRPGs these days. Glad to hear you've played Persona 4 (and hopefully someday 5) because those games give me the same sense of awe that Radian Historia gives you. They're both just utter perfection.
This was on sale on the eshop for £6.74, which is an insanely low price given that it's going for almost 10x that amount for a physical cartridge. My research led me to your video, and I didn't even make it 3/4 of the way through before buying it. Really good video here man.
Just beat this game and as a successor of Radiata Stories, I am 100% satisfied, the story was simply amazing and engrossing. I'm absolutely pissed at myself for not finding out about this game earlier, I wrote it off years ago as just some derpy looking jrpg not knowing it was worked on by a lot of the same people who did Radiata stories and when I figured that out with the remaster dropping I just had to try it out. Worth the 60 dollars I had to dish out to get it delivered to my house via postmates, I was suffering from a cold myself.
Hmm, I thought Radiata Stories had nothing to do with this game other than the similar name? Wish the gem of a game was ported, though, it's one of my favorites.
Its was worked on by a lot of the same people that made Radiata Stories, from what I've seen this and Radiant Historia are the only two times the character designers made character designs for a game.
Ohhh I never heard of that! I just got this game on eshop sale. I put it off so long until it was last rpg on the system left and now its a favorite. Going to get that game!
This game is one of the best jrpgs out there, with mechanics I think are better than Chrono Trigger tbh. I'm extremely happy to see it getting the publicity it deserves, because I've never seen anyone talk about it at a critical level. 7 years after it's original release.
I agree that the battle mechanics are better than Chrono Trigger. In a lot of ways, I'm starting to feel on this playthrough that Radiant Historia could potentially pass CT as my favorite game ever.
Dark Pixel Gaming it would be really cool if you did a comparison video of the two sometime! I've always wanted to see someone objectively pit them against one another
RH is one of the few games as moving as FFVI. It's a masterpiece, and I've thought about it often in the many years since I played it. Didn't even get the good ending!
Because of this video i decied to hunt it down and play last year (got lucky and found this on a whim when went paris), and final finshed it at the start of this year. I've gotta say this game is a honestly a fantastic games and is quickly become one of my favourite JRPG. So i like to thank you guy for recommending this.
i absolutely love this game. i remember having little expectation for this game but as it progressed i loved it more and more. the story. the combat. the characters.
Radiant Historia has this strange emphasis on German-sounding names like Heiss (Heiß), Stocke (Stock, pronounce "Shtock"), Eruca, Rosch. When I first played it I kind of assumed that this was arbitrary, but in this new version, it actually shows the contents of the White Chronicle in the anime cutscene, and what's neat here is that it is actually filled with runes. (Runes aren't a "Scandinavian" thing; they're actually a *Germanic* thing.) The characters in the book don't form any actual words, but I suppose that's to be expected. Anyway, basically, I think the developers must have been going for a *highly* German setting. And that's interesting when you consider the very unique relationship between Japan and Germany (being allied in WWII as the axis powers). Just something I really noticed. Not sure if it's useful to anyone else though... lol.
It really has nothing to do with ww2! German culture within Japan goes back many generations well before even ww1. It's very interesting if you want to read about it a bit, otherwise u should watch some NHK documentary's, you'll even be surprised how much Turkish diplomacy and contact there was with japan, but that could also be from the German connection, Peace.
During the edo period, the dutch owned the only area where foreigners could trade with Japan right? Given that the Dutch and Germans have a common cultural ancestor as well as Japan having a good diplomatic history with prussia prior to WW2 it's not unreasonable to see so many Germanic influences within their media.
hahahahva Actually it's Stocke and it's pronounced like "stock". It's a play on the phrase "stock character" since there's a lot more to him than initially appears.
Very interested to hear your opinion on trails in the sky now after this video Each Trails series takes place on a different country on the same continent, so the first game in each series usually isn't too serious (until the end) and is instead about the characters going through their job/other reason to fully explore their continent, and as a result the series has THE BEST worldbuilding of just about any other JRPG I've played, not to mention the script being one of the best as well, there are so many screenshot worthy lines in the game, the characters ooze personality Radiant Historia is fantastic and I'm glad the port gave it some more much needed attention, I just hope the same can happen for Trails at some point, because the Trails series (particularly the Sky series) has become the new benchmark for me on what a truly amazing JRPG series is like, kinda like you with this game I imagine
I've had a hard time finding something to play after exhausting everything Persona 5 had to offer to me in the 200 hours plus i played it for. The time travel mechanics in this convinced me.
Wonderful anime artwork. Reminds me of Xenogears or Grandia, symbolic and beautiful. Will check this out someday, though I live in Japan (long term) and getting an English copy is a pain, despite reading and speaking Japanese fluently. Yoko Shimomura? Oh my god! Well, now I HAVE to get this. Thank you so much, and much love to you my friend
I'm a long time fan of your channel but only saw this review yesterday. I impulse bought the game and am loving it so far, 3 hours in. Thanks, hope you feel better
So many little things that this game does so well. The story, gameplay, and tone are all great of course, but it's little things like the sprite animations and art direction that really sealed the deal for me
I just got this game. Now a days it’s very expensive physical but I got it for less than $10 on the Atlus sale on the 3ds. I started playing it today and I am looking forward to play this game in the next few days/weeks. I was glued to my 3ds and I am already so invested in this story
glad you talked about this! i snagged it up when it came out because the original was always a game i wish i played on the DS but never got around to. i'm actually finally playing xenoblade chronicles X(another game i picked up on release but never put time into) atm now based on your recommendation and have become addicted! cant wait to keep the JRPG gaming strong, thanks for your videos for the inspiration!
just started playing it. about an hour and a half in and i can already tell it's gonna be something special. my only minor complaint is running around feels slightly clunky and awkward. not s lot but i just recently played golden sun and the movement felt so much smoother in it, especially while moving diagonally.
Ahhh I remember my first time playing Radiant Historia. It caught my eye cause I thought it was similar to Radiata Stories. I didn't know what I expected, but then that title theme came on.... oh god I fell in love with this game right then and there. Boy did it take me for a ride.
quve - Don’t underestimate the power of the Nintendo 3DS. It’s a great system. The system can do a lot, but I think the developers decided to make subtle changes on purpose to keep it as close to the original source as possible, it also updating specific aspects of the game as needed. I just wish that companies like Square-Enix and Capcom would continue to support the Nintendo 3DS. I want those Final Fantasy V and Final Fantasy VI 3D remakes that Square-Enix said they would do for the Nintendo 3DS if it sold well in which it did months later.
oh, i didn't mean anything against the 3ds. i would just love to play it on a tv. maybe my comparison is based on the original version, because i always remember how the music quality was miles above the speaker quality. like the game was too big and trying to bust out? it reminds me of what david lynch said about watching movies on a phone. while my opinions are not quite as extreme haha
I've been meaning to check this out and now I definitely will. For me it was playing Persona 5 that gave me that "Atlus is King of the Hill for JRPGs" realization.
Radiant Historia is notable for being a time travel plot that doesn't feel controlled by the plot instead of the MC. It's Stocke's ideas and character that forges a new path far more than his ability to taxi plot devices from timeline to timeline. The bad endings are canon because the Stocke that gets to the end IS someone who has tirelessly experimented and doubted and tried new things.
Ugh. I was planning to eventually play it, but now you make me feel like getting it right now. Curious: Where do the Golden Sun games and The World Ends With You rank in your list?
Just got radiant historia on sale after Xmas. I'm 15hrs in. Its soo good. I put off getting it because it seemed meh on the store. I do think the first 5hrs was a little show but around 5-6hrs it'll have its claws in you
I have played dozens of JRPGs, but the ones I played non-stop, practically without going outside, for a hole week, are probably Xenoblade, Ni No Kuni 2, and this one.
This is one of the great games that i don't hear talked about enough. I actually didn't pay attention to the combat system for a big chunk and didn't understand why it was such a grind. So when i did realize what i was doing wrong, i felt like a god. That's what i like about simple but interesting combat systems like this, it makes players want ot get into fights. Ex. Tails of symphonia.
It’s really cool to hear your praise for this game. I haven’t finished it yet, but I can definitely vouch for its addictive nature, it’s easily become one of my favorite RPGs. I do agree about the old art being DLC is total bogus. I bought it just to try out and they don’t even replace the portraits on the bottom screen or in battle-it’s only changed for dialogue and cutscenes, which makes the whole situation even more ridiculous. Still, comparing between PC and playthroughs of the original on youtube, the sound design and general visuals have been improved, so I appreciate that. Even if I have my gripes about some decisions for changes, had Perfect Chronology not been released, I never would have even heard of this absolute gem of a game.
I've put a buncha hours into Radiant Historia and eventually I just got kinda worn out from it. The thing that got me, that frustrated me and made me put it down (I believe I stopped around the time people started turning into sand) was that it felt like there was no tension with what happened with the different timelines. Let me explain. So, whenever you're in a timeline, you can do things, and sometimes they work and you progress, and sometimes they don't. But like, nothing that you learn about the state of things felt like it had impact on the future that then happened. For example, there's that fort in the middle of the desert, right? Changing hands multiple times throughout the war? I remember one time, one of the things there supposedly put the side I was playing as in control of it, with the enemy nation on the backfoot. The writing gave the impression that the war was firmly in our favor. I continue on, get a bad end, and... it talks about how the fort's overwhelmed and then enemy enemy conquered the character's side. What? There wasn't a feeling of consistency. It felt like nothing I did mattered because the story would happen in the way the writers wanted regardless of my and the character's actions. Now, obviously that's true in any fictional media. But in my opinion, in *good* stories, you feel like things are happening in a way that makes sense given the actions of the people involved and state of the world. It doesn't *feel* like things are happening because the story demands it, it feels like they happen because they're what would naturally occur. And I just didn't get that from Radiant Historia, and it frustrated me and eventually sapped my willingness to continue playing.
The original track to RH that you played in the beginning is actually the track I have set for my home screen on my 3DS. It's really relaxing and gives me a kingdom vibe (obviously.)
Wow, I did not know about the $2.50 DLC for original character artwork. My game is still sealed, so I guess you can only view DLC for his game via in game menus when you access the eShop through the game?
Cool Dude its is. When they had the design of short hair eurica in an artbook. Like im mad just cuz they locked the OG art sprites as dlc. Such a disrespect to the original artist and in doing so changing the tone. That didnt stop me from getting it. But like really? Really? I gotta pay $1-3 for a thing was in the original game?
I literally got this game a year ago because of you, thanks for the heads up. Thankfully the eshop on 3ds wasn’t down so I could grab it for less than a hundred.
I loved playing this game on NDS emulator. I loved how the story made Stocke to be the behind-the-scene hero, not just like regular RPG where mostly everyone in the world knows you're a hero
The storyline is both heart wrenching and beautiful, the art looks amazing and you get a little feeling on how that character is gonna act, the plot twists oh my gosh the plotwists are incredible character is coughing? Boom theyre gonna die later character is helping you? Boom betrays you but also helps you later, the characters are just sooooo well written to the main character to even sometimes the NPCs and when something happens to them... Heart breaking absolute heartbreaking, the gameplay ohhhhh the gameplay first you never get tired with it you get a new mechanic sometimes in the game and to some enemies they have a special on how you beat them but when you get surprised attack by an enemie makes you just want to throw your ds out of the window lol Basically the game the characters, the gameplay, the storyline, the everything is absolutely amazing and would more than love a sequel
I was already intrigued, and then you basically sealed it when you said the game is composed by Shimumura. I'll start this one after I finish Chrono Trigger
Just go look up the OST on UA-cam. It's honestly really great. Almost every track is good and that is really insanely rare. The ending song is hit or miss depending on the person you are tho since it has singing. I personally was very pleasantly surprised the first time I heard it. Hope you enjoyed the game.
I wasn't too convinced on getting the remake due to the different character portraits, but seeing that they added a minimap in the field is all the convincing I need.
I decided to check out this game because of this video, specifically because the use of time travel/separate timelines as a mechanic was something I enjoyed in the Zero Escape series (though I've only played 999). I'm only a couple hours in but I'm pretty sure it's a case of love at first sight. Thanks for bringing this to my attention!
Radiant Historia is pretty different from the average RPG from Atlus, and that's why I like it. For the most part, the changes made in the new version seem to be to Atlusify the game more. Enemies give less money so the game gets grindier, character portraits were changed to be more generic anime looking, voice acting (the only good part), and one more annoying side quest. They also started the game essentially pairing Eruca to Stocke just to make one of the game's twists more obvious.
Dark Pixel Gaming I definitely feel like the remake did a few things that weakened the core of the game, but I'm still happy with it. Radiant Historia remains as my personal favorite game of all time, and the remake does weaken a few pieces, but it does add some improvements as well. I decided to go for hard mode in this playthrough, yet I wasn't particularly bothered by the money given being lessened. I wasn't really grinding, but I was also already very practiced with the combat system and I did hit some tough spots. I couldn't really say whether or not the remake is better than the original to me, as there are advantages and disadvantages to both. Glad to see people talking about it again, though. Also, Aht is adorable and remains the best.
Maybe it's because I don't have any bias having not played the original before, but I like the new art for the most part. More generic in some aspects, but still far from your usual anime fare. The male characters actually look like males, for instance. EDIT I just wish main Atlus series to return with Kaneko though.
Luckee Strikee yeah I agree. They look “anime-like” without being cringey. Hell, even looking like anime isn’t bad. It’s a nice art style. What’s bad is when the anime art style is accompanied by massive sexualization. It makes the child friendly art soo weird. Thankfully, it doesn’t do that.
Great video Mike! I’m actually getting a 3DS in 2 weeks and between this and SMT Strange Journey, I didn’t know which to pick as my first game. That being said, I think I’ll go with this one as my first. I don’t always agree with everything you say on games but I do value your opinions and you’ve convinced me. Keep up the good work!
Seeing a game like this makes me wish falcon and atlus here make a game together (which is oddly fitting for the trails games, as there's basically a "villian" kinda manipulating time occasionally like the radiant historian book lol)
Yep, Atlus are amazing when it comes to JRPGs nowadays. My first experience with Atlus was the Digital Devil Saga games and they're still in my top 10 for RPGs for the interesting, sometimes heartbreaking, story, likeable characters and fun gameplay.
I really wish they would put more classic style JRPGs on Switch, and of this quality on other Consoles and PC. I would love to see something like Bravely Default made for the Switch. I tried but just couldn't get into games like I am Setsuna and find myself returning and playing games like Phantasy Star IV, Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana and Final Fantasy IV to get my old school fix. I am excited for Octopath Traveller :) I did enjoy Cosmic Star Heroine on PS4 (you can get it on Steam as well) quite a bit.
Great video Mike. After watching this video I want to give this game a chance because it has a lot of the things that I like in a JRPG. Also Mike since you hate bad humor will probably dislike Persona 5 some. While the game wants to talk about serious issues it at the same time wants to make these bad jokes even at the expense of the characters and/or writing and it's nerve-wracking. Get better soon!
I loved final fantasy tactics and the way you described it makes me think this game has got that same serious and realistic tone of a JRPG that's not afraid to get political and whose characters aren't black and white.
I just picked this up two days ago. I had only been playing the demo, and apparently I had been playing the demo for 4 hours. I really didn’t want it to end so I picked up and just kept playing. I haven’t been so immersed in an rpg In a while, I’m glad this game is out.
It recaptured me as well. It's a fantastic game. I seen you name dropping the Legend of Heroes series, Mike you've got to play and talk about this amazing series. It became my favourite of all time (beating Final Fantasy, etc). Play them.
I finished this game last week and i found this game's villain story is actually more compelling than your party member's story. However, when I got the information said the game has more story in the NG+ I really don't know if I can gone through it again.
I totally do! I too just got the Ornithopter and had this 'Oh, dang' moment about what that means for the world map. Really innovative. Thanks for the plug or else I wouldn't have known about this game.
Radiant historia was amazing. Btw is the new ending in perfect chronology or the old ending from the ds version canon? Basically which ending is the “correct” ending.
The biggest opportunity this remaster missed was the ability to go back to the starting area (or even do it in NG+) & beat Palomides. That would have been sweet.
Great video. This is one of those games I’ve heard about for years and always wanted to play, but unfortunately, I’ve never owned a DS or 3DS. Fingers crossed for a Switch versión some day.
Skipping around the channel to watch the videos on the games I've played, so I might have missed it. Your cat is beautiful! Have you introduced us yet?
You make a vett good job at explaining why Radiant Historia is good. I’m very tired of standard J-RPG writing, this is probably for me. I’ve been looking at the DS game, will go for that one since I prefer the art style and no voices.
I really recommend Utawarerumono Mask of Deception/Truth when i hear you talking about what tone and writing you like. Though keep in mind it's a hybrid of visual novel/SRPG. But the story is amazing. Mask of truth maybe the most plottwist heavy game since Xenogears. It also helps that these two games have the best translation (by ATLUS btw) i've ever experienced.
Not really related at all, but knowing you're a big Mitsuda fan, have you seen the concert stream of the Xenogears anniversary concert held 3 days ago? If not, here a link: ua-cam.com/video/xFh2pytm6BU/v-deo.html Chances are that it will be put down soon. Sry for such an off topic comment.
I picked up this game last week and absolutely fell in love with it. I consistently find myself engrossed in its story and gameplay as if I’m reading a good book. Radiant Historia is exactly what I look for when I buy a new JRPG.
Octopath Travelers is story driven with great gameplay.
@@mikeylovespizza4012 The story is pretty poorly paced though
Just finished the game. It's one of the best if not the best JRPG I've ever played, so addictive battle system and great story with realistic characters writing ..
This game deserves much more love :(
I have been watching this game closely and have been on the fence about picking it up. This video was the final tipping point I needed to buy the game. I plan on picking it up at some point this week. Excellent video!
Did you like it?
"Atlus is the new king of JRPGs right now." I couldn't agree more!
a trick : you can watch series on flixzone. I've been using it for watching lots of of movies recently.
@Branson Kingston yup, have been using Flixzone for years myself :)
A couple of people have mentioned Zero Escape, so I'll definitely look into it!
Dark Pixel Gaming Cool. It's actually a trilogy. The first two games were recently re-released in a package called The Nonary Games with several QoL improvents, so check that out if possible. The order is:
Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors (999)
Virtue's Last Reward
Zero Time Dilemma
Originally, VLR was the first to introduce the flowchart (very similar to that of Radiant Historia) that allows you to freely traverse the many timelines of parallel worlds. In the re-release bundle, that flowchart was also added to 999.
Oh yeah, and Steins Gate is another incredible VN about time travel, but there's no flowchart in that one. My avatar is a reference to it, haha.
Oh, that's great. Social psychology isn't my area of expertise, but I'm familiar enough with the concepts to comment on them if you'd like.

Because of budget & how many user per console of course.
GameCube has Skies of Arcadia. Not only the best rpg ever made but one of the best games period
The Switch is the best of both worlds not to mention it's a JRPG powerhouse
@@justanotherrandomontheyout4791 was just going to say this. And they all sell well
Well, Gamecube and WiiU were failures, and nobody developed for them, period.
I love Radiant Historia too, especially the combat
Shame no one really talking about this game, probably not going to have any sequel too with this kind of popularity
Hacked my 3ds the other day and been looking for games to get. Definitely gonna download this one a try, time travel had me hooked

Spot on with how the villains are all 3 dimensional characters! One of the strongest aspects of the game for sure.
@@stacetucker2294 Holy shit, man, your comments convinced me enough to play this game. Does the DLC worth it btw?
I agree, top 5 of all times. I max out all characters and got 100% chronology, but I could never get Radiant Historica and True Radiant Historica
yes, that's what i thought when i first enter the white chronicle, it has Zero Escape all over it
I’ve been listening to your podcasts in the car for the past few weeks and seeing this video puts a smile on my face. Keep up the good work man!
Yeah, I'd say Radiant Historia feels like a mature story without feeling any need to include 'adult' content and I think that's great.
Awesome...when I finally get through all 1000 hours of Dragon Quest VII I'll give this a go next.
The best game on the 3DS, that I've played at least. Incredible music, story, characters, battle mechanics, etc. Surprised Atlus never made a sequel.
Love this game! It reminds me of chrono trigger just a bit better I say.
Because of this video i decied to hunt it down and play last year (got lucky and found this on a whim when went paris), and final finshed it at the start of this year. I've gotta say this game is a honestly a fantastic games and is quickly become one of my favourite JRPG. So i like to thank you guy for recommending this.
This is a great game that deserved more attention. Thanks for making a video on such an underrated gem!
i absolutely love this game. i remember having little expectation for this game but as it progressed i loved it more and more. the story. the combat. the characters.
Sold. I'll have to pick this one up.
Not sure if it's useful to anyone else though... lol.
Atlus takes a lot of inspirations from many cultures in their games.
Very interested to hear your opinion on trails in the sky now after this video
Each Trails series takes place on a different country on the same continent, so the first game in each series usually isn't too serious (until the end) and is instead about the characters going through their job/other reason to fully explore their continent, and as a result the series has THE BEST worldbuilding of just about any other JRPG I've played, not to mention the script being one of the best as well, there are so many screenshot worthy lines in the game, the characters ooze personality
Radiant Historia is fantastic and I'm glad the port gave it some more much needed attention, I just hope the same can happen for Trails at some point, because the Trails series (particularly the Sky series) has become the new benchmark for me on what a truly amazing JRPG series is like, kinda like you with this game I imagine
I've had a hard time finding something to play after exhausting everything Persona 5 had to offer to me in the 200 hours plus i played it for. The time travel mechanics in this convinced me.
Great video mike, you've convinced me to pick up Perfect Chronology. Get well soon!
Rest up and get well soon :) Take your time.
glad you talked about this! i snagged it up when it came out because the original was always a game i wish i played on the DS but never got around to. i'm actually finally playing xenoblade chronicles X(another game i picked up on release but never put time into) atm now based on your recommendation and have become addicted! cant wait to keep the JRPG gaming strong, thanks for your videos for the inspiration!
I just bought it :) , yeah in 2019, never too late!
Well worth it.
Never too late!
just started playing it. about an hour and a half in and i can already tell it's gonna be something special. my only minor complaint is running around feels slightly clunky and awkward. not s lot but i just recently played golden sun and the movement felt so much smoother in it, especially while moving diagonally.
Ahhh I remember my first time playing Radiant Historia. It caught my eye cause I thought it was similar to Radiata Stories. I didn't know what I expected, but then that title theme came on.... oh god I fell in love with this game right then and there. Boy did it take me for a ride.
this game deserves so much more than a simple port to another handheld... it's like a steak in a mcdonald's bag
The 3DS is a great console. It is a freaking powerhouse for JRPGs.
quve - Don’t underestimate the power of the Nintendo 3DS.
True..i got the DS version of this game but never played it..little that i know i invest a lot in the gameplay and got hook up in the story
quve You couldnt have made a better comparison my friend.
You sold me, sir. This game looks AMAZING. I'm looking forward to digging in.
This is my most favourite game of all time. I love it. The story is sooooo good. Some one should write a book on the story.
It would make a great Tv show.
Get well soon Mike. I'm really tempted to play this game now.
I played this on the 2nd print run back in the ds. Fell in love with this one hard. I want to get the 3ds one eventually
I find this to be one of my favorite games of all time great story and battle system is so addicting!
Truly appreciate the content man, your channel is exposing me to more awesome games with a variety of content ;)
I just picked this up today. 3 hours in and I am loving every bit of this game. The story really draws you in and the battle system is cool too.
Same with me but with Xenoblade Chronicles
Just started watching your vids after youtube alg recommended your fftactics one. So far loving the series, I got some serious binging to do.
Hey, you guys got me to pick this game up (Perfect Chronology)....glad I did! I'm really enjoying it, totally overlooked first time around. Thanks!
Eruca's hair is long? Literally unplayable.
GcorpCoPrez yeah same here I bought it but it should have been in the game
I literally got this game a year ago because of you, thanks for the heads up. Thankfully the eshop on 3ds wasn’t down so I could grab it for less than a hundred.
I loved playing this game on NDS emulator. I loved how the story made Stocke to be the behind-the-scene hero, not just like regular RPG where mostly everyone in the world knows you're a hero
Saw the first few minutes and fell in love with it. Thx dude
Great video! I haven't finished this game yet (haven't got the time), but i really enjoyed it
The storyline is both heart wrenching and beautiful, the art looks amazing and you get a little feeling on how that character is gonna act, the plot twists oh my gosh the plotwists are incredible character is coughing? Boom theyre gonna die later character is helping you? Boom betrays you but also helps you later, the characters are just sooooo well written to the main character to even sometimes the NPCs and when something happens to them... Heart breaking absolute heartbreaking, the gameplay ohhhhh the gameplay first you never get tired with it you get a new mechanic sometimes in the game and to some enemies they have a special on how you beat them but when you get surprised attack by an enemie makes you just want to throw your ds out of the window lol
Basically the game the characters, the gameplay, the storyline, the everything is absolutely amazing and would more than love a sequel
Planning to buy it next week because of this video! Thanks Mike!
YES Radiant Historia is my standard of tone, music, story, character build up, and emotion. I LOVE IT! Probably some of the most mature writing.
I told myself I would wait for a sale, but dang it you've made me crack. Hope you are feeling 100% again soon.
I played this 6years ago, and i forgot the title now i've seen this i shall play it again, the story of this game is fantastic.
Im glad that you are playing a game you love. I was a bit concerned by some of your comments on the podcasts.
Kai McDragonfist you will be amazed, i only wish you havent watch this vid, so you didnt get spoiled.
I knew I wasn't crazy about this version of the game making money harder to come by! It definitely makes the game more difficult though.
EDIT
I just wish main Atlus series to return with Kaneko though.
This on ps4
Great video Mike! I’m actually getting a 3DS in 2 weeks and between this and SMT Strange Journey, I didn’t know which to pick as my first game. That being said, I think I’ll go with this one as my first. I don’t always agree with everything you say on games but I do value your opinions and you’ve convinced me. Keep up the good work!
The 3DS has a freaking TON of amazing jrpgs, so no matter what you go with first there's a lot to look forward to!
Thank you for sharing this video, it helped me decide whether or not to try this game.
I finished RS on DS a little while before it be remade for 3ds , and soon after it was released for 3ds and it got even more famous
Radiant Historia was a amazing game. I love the time travel mechanic.
Thanks for making this video
Really glad that you made this video, one of my fav..~ Pls next consider making one for Suikoden I and II... ^^
I'm dying to cover Suikoden I and II on the channel! The patrons just need to vote for it!
Thanks for the thoughts 🙏
Great video Mike. After watching this video I want to give this game a chance because it has a lot of the things that I like in a JRPG. Also Mike since you hate bad humor will probably dislike Persona 5 some. While the game wants to talk about serious issues it at the same time wants to make these bad jokes even at the expense of the characters and/or writing and it's nerve-wracking. Get better soon!
I loved final fantasy tactics and the way you described it makes me think this game has got that same serious and realistic tone of a JRPG that's not afraid to get political and whose characters aren't black and white.
My new quarantine game, thanks for the recommendation!
Huh. Is this where the PSP version of Tactics Ogre got its time travel mechanic idea from?
Seems like a very similar concept.
I just picked this up two days ago. I had only been playing the demo, and apparently I had been playing the demo for 4 hours. I really didn’t want it to end so I picked up and just kept playing. I haven’t been so immersed in an rpg In a while, I’m glad this game is out.
Dude, it's so hard to put down!
Agreed, its a great game.
Damn I love this game. Wish we could get nemesia in the party with eruca and aht
I understand why they did it, but I wish you weren't forced to use Stocke at all times.
This is one of my favorites too. The story and gameplay are awesome!
I knew nothing about Radiant Historia until I heard about the remake. I love the game, and I love the soundtrack.
Will totally get this after I run through Alliance Alive. Also, my 'like' was for the game, not your flu. Hope you feel better soon.
Haha, sounds good. Hope you enjoy The Alliance Alive!
I totally do! I too just got the Ornithopter and had this 'Oh, dang' moment about what that means for the world map. Really innovative. Thanks for the plug or else I wouldn't have known about this game.
you should just make a list of your top rpgs with this type of tone. would love to see that
Radiant historia was amazing. Btw is the new ending in perfect chronology or the old ending from the ds version canon? Basically which ending is the “correct” ending.
Perfect chronology. The first one is incomplete and ends with a cliff hanger
The biggest opportunity this remaster missed was the ability to go back to the starting area (or even do it in NG+) & beat Palomides. That would have been sweet.
Like I said before, you're a man with culture.
I just got this game. Pokemon Ultra made me depressed. Got this...FELL IN LOVE!
Get well soon.
Great video. This is one of those games I’ve heard about for years and always wanted to play, but unfortunately, I’ve never owned a DS or 3DS. Fingers crossed for a Switch versión some day.
Salvador Polanco Honestly is so worth it to buy a DSlite, even just for Radiant Historia
What do you think of Sea of stars on kickstarter? I wonder if they will do villains like this game
I'll have to look into it!
This was my favorite game on ds and one of my favorite jrpgs thanks for making this please do a full teview
I will definitely cover this in a full analysis at some point!
