I was expecting the magic crystal to be split into the 4 elements of fire, earth, water and air and put into thematically fitting areas, but maybe this trope isn't as trope-y as I think because I didn't play THAT many JRPG.
+RandomGuy Ummm... On the original PlayStation, FF7 was 3 discs long, FF8&9 were 4 discs long, Legend of the Dragoon was 4 discs long, I think Chrono Trigger was at least 2 discs long (I haven't played it yet), and I'm sure there are lots of other examples.
Need some help, don’t know if I should play this or “the legend of the final earthbound fantasy to the past: The golden Xenoblade Superstar odyssey Saga. I heard “golden Xenoblade Superstar Odyssey Saga” had way more content but the other one has a better story. Or should I go with “Breath of the seven hollow Sirens”, the first game in the series?
Eternal Sonata has technically a boss with 1 phase, but if you take a BOSS as the end of the game and not just the battle with one individual, you can count it as 2 phases.

The WerewolfF I can only think of the Witcher series, Mass Effect series and Dragon Age 2/Inquisition though. The rest of the RPGs aren't worth mentioning/don't have an actual protagonist who can speak.
So far as I know, Tales of Xillia 2 is the *only* "Tales of" game with a silent protagonist. I could be wrong on that, though- I haven't played all of them. I know for a fact that Symphonia, Dawn of the New Age, Graces, Xillia 1, and Zestiria all have talking heroes. Disgaea isn't known for silent protagonists, either. In fact, I'd go so far as to say that Laharl, Mao, and sometimes Valvatorez are actually _very loud._ In Megaman X Command Mission, X is just as talkative as everyone else during cutscenes and battles. No two ways about it, Lan and Megaman.exe are full of personality in the Megaman Battle Network games, and even chat with each other at the push of a button. Same for Geo and Omega-Xis in Megaman Starforce. I may not know much about it, but I think only about _half_ of the Fire Emblem series relies on mute heroes...
"NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!JK, I have two more forms."Well, looks like someone hasn't played Kingdom Hearts (for real, he had SIX)
Missed the secret boss that should be canonically weaker than the literal planet-busting final boss but somehow manages to kick your ass 3 million times without even breaking a sweat
Fucking Omega and Shinryuu from FF5. Fuck those bosses. There's also a bonus dungeon in the GBA version of FF5 that has even harder versions of Shinryuu and Omega and on the way to Super Omega, you had to fight through a room of like 7 fucking Omegas. Canonically though, they were apparently more powerful than Exdeath to the point where the previous heroes were like "Fuck that shit, it can stay in the void"
+Jakiro TheTwinHeadedDragon i think you're missing the point, they want a game that is this kind of satire, that comments on the players obvious lack of urgency, or pokes fun at grinding when you do it and a number of other things. its the same reason why deadpool is popular, its 4th wall breaking and cheeky, some people hate it, but ALOT of people love it. also fuck it i own rpg maker check back in in a few months, maybe i'll have a game for you guys
Evanz111 Bonus points if there are several different colors of slimes and frogs, with orders of magnitude differences in power between them. And the crystal/white/transparent-colored slime calmly evades the party's attacks and then runs away, taking its twenty quadrillion gulds with it.
"NOOOOO-jk i have 2 more forms." Every...JRPG...final boss...ever...literally. Except for some rare titles like the Souls games, Fire Emblem, Pokemon, and...that's kind of it.
joshua kim It often happens at any game with a "final boss" actually, really. Think of most Castlevania games (that predate metroidvania), Goemon games, Mega Man and so on. And there are many JRPGs with a single-form final boss, too. But yeah, lmao, it's on point for many. :p
I love those games with that *"we must hurry! We have little time to save him/her. If we're late, he/she will be dead and the whole kingdom will fall"* , and then you proceed to grind for 5 hours.
This is genuinely amazing, and *SO* accurate! I see strong influence from Final Fantasy, Super Mario RPG, Dragon Quest, Chrono Trigger, and funnily enough, a lot of tropes etc which would've been in the RPG that *I* always wanted to create.
They took a lot of sprites from Final Fantasy Tactics. The female thief and the male ninja for one. Several character images are FF: Tactics assets as well.
+EclipseHedgehog It's technically a reference to Final Fantasy IV and EarthBound that have the "Power of Prayer" ending scenarios. While it was first done in FFIV, it was more effective from a narrative standpoint in EarthBound.
Magus is sexy henchman for that, but with the alternate plot twist of can be made good guy and can be party member (Beatrix from FF also follows this, albeit she's temporary). Seriously, have you even looked at his artwork? Elfin ears, ripped and a wicked scythe, he's the only possible interpretation of sexy henchman, albeit he comes off as main baddie initially until revealed to be henchman of the queen in question.
i seriously hate it when games pull that shit with powerfull attacks i mean for fucks sake if you blow up the sun and destroy the earth thats it GAME FUCKING OVER!
I'd love to see a game with an alternate ending that does that. Oh, the final boss got to use their ultimate attack before you killed them? The entire fucking solar system's gravity is now fucked up.
Steve Son I've never played a Tales game and the only Final Fantasy games that I played didn't start out like this (I only played VII and the one with the knight that betrayed his kingdom, because the king turned evil (I don't remember exactly which one that was). I did play all 3 Golden Sun games though and they all fit almost every cliche mentioned in this video.
Arbitrary minigames CHECK Silent protag CHECK Oddly sexual bad guy/girl that is actually the final boss CHECK 2 Form Final Boss CHECK Final Plot Device Attack CHECK Death of Loved One... family member CHECK Lol yeah pretty much, tho this is meant to be taken off more major series like Chrono/FF/Tales.
WindXadepts I don't remember the plot device attack on the golden sun for ds what was that again? I just remember having every single djinn, and summoning the 4-5 same color djinn gods to kill it.
+the guy in the corner It was great when FF 7 came around but they refuse to evolve the franchise which is why I stopped playing their games a long time ago. When they came out with Tactics, Vagrant Story and Parasite Eve, I figured that these were good examples of evolving variety in turn-based RPGs but Square didn't follow up on any of those titles and went right back to the well.
+the guy in the corner except for NieR. Which was excellent and completely NOT like anything in this video. However, that was made by an outside studio with non SE-staff. also, i would argue that JRPG's are still pretty formulaic for the most part, though perhaps not exactly with the exact same setup in this video.
i preferred the turn based combat in final fantasy. It was actually more challenging. Now I can spam the attack button and doge regularly to win. I always laughed at the idea, but if it's done well any type of game can be good.
Turn based combat can be fun. Its just that alot of them are plain and repetitive. There are some tbc systems that actually require thought and planning and has a bit of rng, and those are actually fun.
+Solum, personally, I'm a big fan of games like FF Tactics, Shadow in the Darkness, Phantasy Star IV. Phantasy Star IV being the creme of the crop because you could combine skills to do shit like a "Tri Storm". Fun games with great story telling and a decent pace that typically required strategy. I kind of cheated in FFVII because my buddy farmed the black Chocobo and I picked up Knights of the round with it and a bunch of leveled up Multiplier Materia. Essentially, I just spammed 4x KoTR over and over and destroyed after that. But if I had never gotten that materia, Sephiroth would have been a much harder fight.
Ry Secret boss? Is it the Grim Reaper? I could never defeat him, and at one point I was able to fuse Messiah. The fight with Nyx was the definition of final boss insanity (especially playing on a dying PSP)!
Ah, yes. The JRPG world of magic and medieval times set somewhere in an inexistent universe which we use as an escape from the reality we don't really like much. I can relate
For anyone smashing their head against the wall trying to remember where the song at 2:17 is from, it's from the Dwarf Forest in Tomba. I performed my fair share of headwalling myself to be able to miraculously recall that.
Yea it took me a while to figure it out, specially since I assumed it must be an rpg at first Then the sound effect of the crawling spider things came in my head with the song and I figured it out
Why does college humour not have the resources to make videos like this anymore. You get one from time to time like this but now it's just the same group of people in the same room. Years ago you would get videos in different locations with large groups of actors or expensive animation like this.
What about the Grumpy Ninja's optional hidden sidequest that occurs within the last third of the game that provides you with his troubled sympathetic background but never results in any future character development nor becomes relevant to the main plot? That part's my favorite.
Masao Uchiha Yeah, but to be fair, even though they follow a pattern, it's not as blatantly obvious as this but meh. I like trying to search for less known Final Fantasy games. Right now i'm planning to play Final Fantasy 1 through 5 since nobody talks about them because they were out on the famicom and even though they came out in remakes, nobody bought them with the exception of FF6 of course. So i'm taking a look at those games for starters.
Masao Uchiha Nice, just got Final Fantasy chronicles but FF4 is going to have to wait it's turn but it's on my shelves. Just finished FF1, let me tell you though, you want a game that doesn't hold your hand? Pff, you think you get lost in Dark Souls, at least they give you directions as vague as they are, FF1, they're not even around to tell you what's going on besides "there's the bad guy, oh shit, you killed him already? Well now that you did that, hey you think you could fix the world? The bridge is fixed so you can advnace, go nuts bro" lol.
I can only imagine. XD I've played video games where they suddenly let you go wherever you want without so much as some kind of clue of where to go next. I've encountered ridiculously tough enemies because of it
Dinosaurs are fantasy so it fits. "No sun so they died out... but crocodiles basked in that non-existent sun!" "Also, raptors were too slow and weak to catch anything, so they unintentionally morphed into flightless proto-ostriches which then learned how to fly...."
keiichimorisato98 Yeah I know I was just messing around because I did actually get those :( because I have a weakness for moe and fan service and pop culture. But a lot of the references in here I felt were final fantasy based and I LOVE the mid generation FF games ( 7-9 especially and even 10 has a place in my heart)
Look what they did to FF... It doesn't quite feel like a JRPG. At least we still have Persona 5 and the SMT series!.... If you have a nintendo console that is.
What about when there is the one shop where there's a baker or something that says "Here, I'll give you one of my best items free for no reason! Otherwise it'd cost you 300 diamonds or 999.99 USD!"
Unless it's in a post-apocalyptic setting with irradiated ghouls and people with Forced Evolutionary Virus, after a nuclear war. Because war...war never changes.
There are tonnes of western RPGs with good, non-repeating plot, different mechanics and very distinct settings(not just orks and dwarfes). JRPGs are basically same boring shit all over again.
Last boss: _"Damn, the heroes beat my minion! Maybe I should go personally kill them now while their levels and equipment are too weak to be a threat...nah, I'll just keep sending lesser minions they are capable of defeating until they are leveled up and geared up enough to beat me."_

I was expecting the magic crystal to be split into the 4 elements of fire, earth, water and air and put into thematically fitting areas, but maybe this trope isn't as trope-y as I think because I didn't play THAT many JRPG.
And the endless grinding?!
+darkdesigns Not on Playstation :p
+RandomGuy Ummm... On the original PlayStation, FF7 was 3 discs long, FF8&9 were 4 discs long, Legend of the Dragoon was 4 discs long, I think Chrono Trigger was at least 2 discs long (I haven't played it yet), and I'm sure there are lots of other examples.
This is my favourite game
The Legend of the Final Earthbound Fantasy to the Past: The Attack of the Chronotrigger Emblem...Crystal Version
MINE TOO! I can't wait for the expansion 3 disk set - Legaia's chronicles of dissidia: Cids ocean of Phantasy stars.
Makoto Yuki Just play Doom.
Dan Inbox already did...
Try playing Golden Suikoden Wild Ocean: Phantasy Persona.
Is anyone else extremely bothered that the final blow deals only 999998 damage?
not as much as I'm bothered by the fact that the final boss has 3 fckng forms!! lol
3 forms is pretty standard for a final boss.. specially in FF
+Pix-Elated
when does a jrpg NOT have a 3 phase boss? that's the most universal trope of them all.
Eternal Sonata has technically a boss with 1 phase, but if you take a BOSS as the end of the game and not just the battle with one individual, you can count it as 2 phases.
Our JRPG Hero sould not let her have killed.

your silence makes you easier to project onto
every rpg ever
Patrick Mendez wrong. I can think of quite a few RPGs with non silent protagonists. For example Witcher
......Same gameplay.......overused mechanics.......Glichy broken gameplay and world ....tons of repeated milked side quests (quantity over quality) Something about an ugly looking king........boring robotic characters with uninteresting repetitive stories about where did i put that book find it and i'll make it worthy (rewards rock or a bone with like 8 pieces of gold)...or please deliver this message to her because i'm restarted......every WRPG ever! but again only when you posses such a poor taste you'd enjoy such a crappy poorly made games......hehe
The WerewolfF I can only think of the Witcher series, Mass Effect series and Dragon Age 2/Inquisition though.
The rest of the RPGs aren't worth mentioning/don't have an actual protagonist who can speak.
DAO still blows any of theother Dragon age series right out of the water.
In fact, I'd go so far as to say that Laharl, Mao, and sometimes Valvatorez are actually _very loud._
In Megaman X Command Mission, X is just as talkative as everyone else during cutscenes and battles.
Why is my mother a knight from Final Fantasy Tactics?
matt4045 It's the disappointing sequel.
matt4045 your mother is princess Ovelia, not a knight.
Fernando Mattar Ovelia wears red, Knights wear blue.
but knight's faces are diferent
matt4045 It's the same face tho.
You forgot to mention that winning enough mini games unlocks the most powerful weapon in existence.
Uh...I collected every pinecone
Not a JRPG but Yakuza 0 lets you unlock the Legend Style if you do enough real estate

Really, two. His human form twice, and his...I don't even know what his second form is but it's split up into parts. Xemnas has four.
Have you ever heard of Persona 3?
It's more like final fantasy 10
Arthur Newton until kingdom hearts 2. That one has 8. . . jesus
Old post but ever heard of Wild Arms 3? The final boss has 10 forms.
DON'T FORGET FUCKING KINGDOM HEARTS 2 TERRA
PRAISE THINE MEME LORD
Lmao he's nothing compared to BBS young Xehanort
Sephiroth from any and all Kingdom Hears games
Young Xehanort being the strongest boss in BBS actually makes sense, though.

Evanz111 THE SLIMES
Evanz111 Bonus points if there are several different colors of slimes and frogs, with orders of magnitude differences in power between them. And the crystal/white/transparent-colored slime calmly evades the party's attacks and then runs away, taking its twenty quadrillion gulds with it.

Every...JRPG...final boss...ever...literally.
joshua kim I dunno... FFV only had two forms for the final boss, not 3...

I think the point of the video is that it's been done, like, a frajillion times.
There is a game with similar concept is called Video Game: The Video Game , it's free on new grounds, check it out, it last less than a minute.
Is more an animation than an actual game, but it's fucking great!

This is genuinely amazing, and *SO* accurate! I see strong influence from Final Fantasy, Super Mario RPG, Dragon Quest, Chrono Trigger, and funnily enough, a lot of tropes etc which would've been in the RPG that *I* always wanted to create.

+BK201DarkerThanBlack The crystals are also from FFT. They took a ton from FFT.
+Some Guy on a Computer japan be loving dat incest yo
+EclipseHedgehog It's technically a reference to Final Fantasy IV and EarthBound that have the "Power of Prayer" ending scenarios. While it was first done in FFIV, it was more effective from a narrative standpoint in EarthBound.
But where's the train suplex?
and the endless grinding?
The grinding... rpgs in general should be renamed role grinding games rGGs.
Sabin is love, Sabin is life
I'm strangely turned on by train suplexing.
That's in every JRPG? thought it was only in one.
Never have I been so offended by something I totally agree with.

This is missing one major, almost in every JRPG cliche. The main character having amnesia.
+TheGlasses61 I heard a rumor that monsters are coming back!
+Hi O'Laverly
FF7 and Breath of Fire 3 are a couple more I can think of offhand. The princess has amnesia in FF9.
+TheGlasses61 That is because they forgot about it
Fire emblem Awakening.
+Hi O'Laverly Xenogears too. Oh, and in Final Fantasy VIII, the majority of the main characters end up having amnesia.
They should kickstart this as a JRPG parody game.
Play Mardek, it's pretty close.
@David Silverman same here its got black jack mini game... sign me in
Also change the chocobo, for copyright reasons. Plus, chocobo dealer.
i thought the sexy henchman didn't apply to Chrono Trigger but then I remembered the queen who was pretty much the same thing
But the queen also has that stupid attitude and the multiple forms
Magus has got a very serious attitude and only 1 battle form
Alessandro Paolino Like I said, alternate, and The Queen is not a henchman period, she's a ruler, entirely different kettle of fish.
But she wasn't actually the same thing...
They forgot to show how a high powered rifle does less damage than a knife.
Or the ten hours cutscene summon that somehow manages to miss after blowing the entire univers to bits.
i seriously hate it when games pull that shit with powerfull attacks i mean for fucks sake if you blow up the sun and destroy the earth thats it GAME FUCKING OVER!
I'd love to see a game with an alternate ending that does that. Oh, the final boss got to use their ultimate attack before you killed them? The entire fucking solar system's gravity is now fucked up.
"JK i have 2 more forms" I can't even...

This is literally every Golden Sun game that was ever released.
There are only, like, three. The Final Fantasy or Tales franchise would be a more apt comparison.
All 3 of them, including the first 2 which made up one whole game, LITERALLY EVERY SINGLE GOLDEN SUN!
Arbitrary minigames CHECK
Silent protag CHECK
Oddly sexual bad guy/girl that is actually the final boss CHECK
2 Form Final Boss CHECK
Final Plot Device Attack CHECK
Death of Loved One... family member CHECK
Lol yeah pretty much, tho this is meant to be taken off more major series like Chrono/FF/Tales.
WindXadepts I don't remember the plot device attack on the golden sun for ds what was that again? I just remember having every single djinn, and summoning the 4-5 same color djinn gods to kill it.
You wrote "Every Square Enix Game" wrong. Seriously Square Enix is the only one STILL doing that
+the guy in the corner It was great when FF 7 came around but they refuse to evolve the franchise which is why I stopped playing their games a long time ago.
I reckon Just Cause 3 is nothing like this sort of thing, but maybe there' slide an inner plot that I was unable to understand.
+DonCapoeira Tactics follows a few of these tropes though.
+the guy in the corner

No jokes about the turn based combat.....
Ok.....
That's why I don't play JRPGs anymore. No more TBC.
i preferred the turn based combat in final fantasy. It was actually more challenging. Now I can spam the attack button and doge regularly to win. I always laughed at the idea, but if it's done well any type of game can be good.
FF15 is turn based?
OH NO PERSONA 3 FLASH BACKS.
14 FORMS. ULTIMATE MOVE. SECRET BOSS.

That part's my favorite.
and he is still the favorite, non boobed, character

This should have been named "Every Squaresoft/Enix game ever.
"Every popular Squaresoft/Enix game ever"*
It's kinda depressing how the popular games are the ones that have more cliches, when you think about it
Masao Uchiha Yeah, but to be fair, even though they follow a pattern, it's not as blatantly obvious as this but meh.
Oh, nice.
I gotta say, I really like 4; it's pretty underrated.
There are tonnes of western RPGs with good, non-repeating plot, different mechanics and very distinct settings(not just orks and dwarfes). JRPGs are basically same boring shit all over again.
