Renault Clio RS 200 EDC v Ford Fiesta ST Mountune - /CHRIS HARRIS ON CARS
Вставка
- Опубліковано 10 вер 2013
- Ford has boosted the Fiesta ST. Many people already thought it was better than the paddles-only Clio RS. Time for a face-off.
I think that Clio is better looking. looks incredible from the rear. fiesta looks, well, american.
Alex Bienemann has the Clio got a manual gearbox... No!
I agree the clio is better looking but I don't think the fiesta looks very American. I drive a fiesta st and on the road my car looks European compared to everything else
@@rejoicerone3176 yes
But you can heel and toe
Clio has a face only a mother could love
gotta love that straight cut whine
That Walkinshaw V6 was a mental move for any brand at any time. As car lovers we have to savour those moments, they won't come often.
I'm getting soon Clio RS 200 EDC and just can't wait! Been waitin for almost four months now...
@Batman dude his comment was 7years ago lol
0-60 in 6.5 in a Ford Fiesta of all things... these are good times for automotive enthusiasts.
Another weekly video dose of automotive excellence. Keep up the good work Chris and all of you at Drive.
Fiesta ST: a proper POCKET ROCKET... ❤
I think the Ford stays true to the original definition of what a hot hatch should be. The Renault is trying to change the hot hatch formula which isn't broken in the first place.
The problem I have is a like the Clio. Yes I miss the manual but I think I could get over it. The fiesta is brilliant to my eyes I like the styling but I do have a soft spot for the 208 gti I'm just glad they've found their mojo again
+Ian Townsend Me too, wish I could see more of the 208 GTI around.
Well with the new Clio Trophy having 220BHP and 260Nm of torque (280Nm with overboost in 4th and 5th!) I'm glad I've gone for the Clio.....
I know it's more expensive but it just has so much more going for it than the Fiesta.....
And if a lot of it is about talk as Chris says the the new Clio trophy has almost 100Nm than the stock Fiesta and OVER 100Nm in the later gears.....
I'll have my Mountune MP215 kit finally fitted after over a year of having my ST, I wanted to get really used to the stock performance so I'd feel the benefit from the Mtune kit. So excited! If I'm honest I think Chris Harris is the reason I bought a Fiesta ST! Loved his review of it.
And I bet you were disappointed with it lol.
@@richardhurr31 funnily enough I didn't actually go with Mountune, I went for a Revo stage 2 kit instead running somewhere between 240 and 250 hp, full Milltek non res turbo back exhaust (with Milltek sports cat), airtec intake, intercooler (can't remember brand) and I was NOT disappointed haha. Only thing I was disappointed with was how often I needed to change the front rubber lol
@@Matt7R haha good choice. Glad you saw sense. 😂
Fair enough that's one out of many. The best thing I advise you to do is not worry about a review and test drive them all yourself like I did and I went for the ST in the end, purely down to how well it handles. Pick the right one for yourself.
It's nice there is now a car choice for everybody. The Clio for the gadget brigade, The ST has followed on from previous Clios but with the torque that everyone that didn't like to use a gearbox and a cam tuned powerband moaned about and the 208 GTI for the people that want a more everyday hot hatch in this sector. It's a good time if you have the money. No one needs to bother with any over priced VAG crap for a change.
need to compare the mountune st to the clio 220 trophy ,,, pleassse
r14j Why? It's more expensive. Surely the point it that you can have the Fiesta with Mountune for the same price as the regular Clio RS?
Alex Napper Even with the Mountune kit it's easily over 1000€ cheaper. That pays for 2 sets of Michelin pilot sport 3 tires. Renault has blown it by not having a manual as standard. It's a hot hatch requirement. It's not playing in the league of cars like GTR, 911, and lambo's. and what not.
@@Naps-95 exactly
I really do think that whoever comes out with a rwd hatchback now, will most definitely kill em all. I hope Kia's concept comes out.
hi im from the future yes it did indeed come out
“30 degrees is a heat wave”
Lol *laughs in south of France
i like the recent use of slow mo clips, they really make it a different viewing experience, keep pumpin out the footage chris! dedicated viewer/fan
The brakes on the Feista st are really really good I've never had brake fade yet and I've driven mine pretty hard it's the best all round hot hatch and has been for 3 years or so so the French have a bit of catching up to do on how to improve on the Feista
I'm a big RenaultSport fan, I've got a Mk3 Clio 200 but id still have the ST over the new Clio. £21,000 for a JUNIOR hot hatch? No thanks
Forcing people to have a 5 door with auto box only in this sector is going to put a lot of people off, especially fans of the old clio....which was 3 door with a 6 speed manual.
Also I bet that gearbox is at least part of why the clio is so much more expensive than the ST. Kinda shot themselves in the foot there really.
+soundseeker63 yes clearly based on the comments you're absolutely right. I suppose people get hot hatches for the driving pleasure and fun of it all, not sheer speed, and as such the 6 sp fiesta is miles ahead in terms of popularity.
+lalala kieran In australia the clio has seen a massive boost in sales over the previous gen clio due to the EDC gearbox. I'm not saying it wouldn't be nice to also have a manual option but Renault stated that it was one or the other and chose to go dual clutch. Everyone is still hoping for a manual Gordini though and that would be a nice car. In this price bracket though the most popular small sports car in aus is by far the toyota 86
Daniel Bradey golf gti's are everywhere in Sydney and polo gti's too are very popular. I got a golf gti 2011, manual of course, love it. really is manic little car when pushed not always so mature
Yeah. But in Straya so few people can even operate a manual. It annoyed me so much, that a lot cool used cars that I wanted to buy were only available in auto. Auto gearboxes are a huge market there. In Europe however, manual is still the stuff most people can use/want to have/buy.
Props to the few Aussies that drive stick.
Robert Waffel gotta have hot hatches in manual imo.
Exactly :D
Really I wanted to see Chris compare the standard ST to the standard Clio. But I guess he has already said his opinion on that, which is in a conflict with the internet.
30 degrees, that's so cute. We got to 32 the other day in Sydney and we've only just started Spring
I live in Toronto, Canada. Ive never even seen a Clio, but obviously a Fiesta. I only really watched this review because of Chris Harris' personality! Excellent info and entertaining to watch! They should drop Tanner Foust and have Chris as a third presenter
Automatic gearboxes are for lexus and buses not hot hatches
dilawer321 I've never seen a bus and a lexus with a dual clutch gearbox. Unless you think automatics and dual clutches are the same...
Yea I know. Putting anything other than a fully manual gearbox in a hot hatch is like having a diesel porche 911. Its just wrong. The whole point in a hot hatch is high performance, practicality, low cost and no fancy nonsense :/
Even VW finaly realised that and put a manual box in the updated 1.8 Polo GTI.
Ya only the enzo Ferrari has one
Need to do the 220 trophy clio vs the montune fiesta
WhiteMoonLights
That's a comparison between the stock versions of each car. The Fiesta ST in this video has been fitted with the Mountune Performance package giving it 215 hp.
4:57 now that's how you hit the apex
What was the relevance with the Cup car?
I have a 172 and love the look of the new Clio, agreed lots of people say they prefer the Ford (maybe because cheap lease deals allow the hot hatch generation to drive a brand new car??)
But the last 3 minutes of this video honestly make it look like Renault just asked you to drive their Cup racer to take the spotlight away from the Ford winning in a straight line at the start of the vid...
We can't get the Clio here anyway. And the Fiesta ST is only available as a Four Door which I don't mind I don't get caught up in how many doors a car has. I want a Focus ST because it's larger and nicer inside but every time I watch a video by Chris or by Matt @ Smoking Tire on their Modifed ST,it makes me want one especially if the banks won't let me have a loaded up Focus ST, might as well get a Fiesta ST, loaded get a tune (not Mountune in the US that's too conservative), exhaust and something I won't mention, increase the power by 40%... Its the small car that's good at EVERYTHING and that's hard to ignore.
Mountune needs to come to the US market. Ford has the best hot hatches at the moment and I think they would sell well in the US.
He is stating the temp in Celsius, the conversion is 86 degrees Fahrenheit ,pretty warm for the UK I think.
I'm loving that red seatbelt.
Dual clutches put out amazing shift times but in anything like a hot hatch I just don't think it's needed, people don't buy a hot hatch for maximum speed they buy them for fun. Just think a manual better suits both these cars
Nobody is too old for hooning around in a hot hatch! Although if you have space needs, the Focus could be better for you. I drove my friend's around and it was sublime.
Most people that make the comments haven't driven either and are making noises to match the crowd. I'd take the Fiesta (which I agree surprised me after the XR5) but I don't mind chucking it around and it would be a 100% street car. Love how Clios handle and the predictable nature. I don't not like the DSG but really enjoy changing gears and feel that is a legitimate part of a driving experience.
clio looks about 90 times better though, in my opinion
RWD and shots wheelbase is a recipe for a legend!! Lancia Stratos, Toyota GT86, Lotus Elise, Mazda Miata etc...
Clio is way better looking to me but preference varies from person to person, honestly looks like for won this one, cheaper, faster the only reason you'd get the Clio is if you just prefer it lol
The sound of that Cup car us just fantastic. What fun.
Some of the go-fast goodies we never get over here in the States. We got the Focus ST, but I didn't know they made a Fiesta ST too! And the Clio is cute too.
weve got the fiesta st in canada so you must have it in the states. i agree we dont get most european spec goodies but i think youre wrong on this one
We got the Fiesta, but not the ST model. And we just got the Focus ST. That'll satisfy me for a while.
Chalres Kirkland you can buy the fiest st in the states, but you dont get the option of a 2 door. there is only the 4 door st
That Cleo race car sounds absolutely stunning wowsers....
Chris said he prefers the Clio. It's really up to you which is better, Top Gear says the Fords the best, others may say the 208GTI is the best. But I think the Clio is overpriced. I have an ST and think it's awesome but I never drove the Clio, out of my price range. I think we should be glad we have 3 amazing hot hatches all hit the market at the same time :)
pt 3 Some of the offramps etc, all Auckland NZ. Westbound on Esmonde Rd, descending left hander to get on to SH1 Northbound. Northbound on SH1, get off at Albany Expressway / Greville Rd, right hander on the roundabout and switch to the left that rises steeply to get back on SH1. Huia Rd and on to gravel on Whatipu Rd.
I'm glad Ford is putting out great hot hatches. Hopefully, other manufacturers will follow suite.
Wow. In 1996 the Fiat Coupe did 0-60 in 6.3seconds, one never thought there would be anything faster fwd. Now ther're all over the place! I'll keep my Fiat tho. :)
Why? It's exactly the same. The gears are in the same position. The Reverse is in the front but that is very common on Diesel powered cars, and it's easy to get used to.
Im from seattledam and yes most muricans dont understand how light weight and high rpm engines can be fun and economical
Clio 200 HP fiesta st mountune 215 HP and 236 lb torque
Having driven a clio 4 RS cup chassi for a bit more than 11.500 km to this day, I completly agree with Chris Harris regarding the gearbox. It works just perfectly well and is a real bonus in everyday conditions. The car is fun to drive and probably better than the ford for a daily ride on UK roads. 5th gear review is just plain stupid.
I think the problem with paddles in cars like this is day to day the novelty wears off. On the track its great but the percentage of time spent on the track vs street is very small. In town a manual in a small car or hot hatch will always be more entertaining day to day. If the had just offered both no one would have said anything. Both great. Ford would be my choice.
i find it odd in some shots its clearly molten orange in colour up to and including lining up and not once it goes.i know the molten orange colour changes dramatically in different lighting conditions but not to a red even burgundy colour as i had one
Returning to this video, I will say the Clio has grown on me, the rear looks good and with some tweaks or different wheels it looks a LOT better. The tuning potential on the Clio is pretty damn good as well.
probably because reverse gear is in a different place and the shifter requires you to use your left hand
Erm....wasnt that fiesta tuned? Did anyone see the little yellow badge on the tailgate! And why isnt a comparison to the polo gti being done?
Stock Clio vs a mod ST? Stupid comparison
that why i have a black terd, 91 stripped si hatch with a built d16z6 and a 5 speed... 35mpg and a hoot as a daily driver with plenty of room for my tools
Yes, that is true but the idea that first gear is furthest (besides reverse) from you rather than right up to your right thigh (or left in that case). It would definitely take some getting used to, but not impossible.
French cars used to be bad, back in the 90's, however they are a hell of a lot better these days compared to their old cars.
I used to own a Clio 182 (2003), I owned it for 4 years and apart from servicing it never went wrong and I abused that little car.
I watched an episode where these guys took a used Fiesta ST and tuned it with a chip and bolt on upgrades to over 400 HP and 400 lbs of torque.
BurqaKing! thats fricken awesome! Totally agree the track if the place to explore the limits. Had errands to do all day. Took the wagon out and slow to warm up / fluctuating temp. Also wouldn't stay composed when pushing on a tight 450 degree onramp that is well cambered but drops maybe 8m. To the shed to do the thermostat (stuck halfway open) and flush + new coolant. Check tyre pressures (had done that when I picked it up but checked for changes) still all the same so check alignment, ...cont
Shame on RS for not giving us a manual
It would make sense for them to sell it as a Nissan in North America. I would like to see that :) I wish car companies would sell all the models all over the world, not just limited to markets. (even if in limited runs)
Depends on the person.
Like me I'm having more fun when I'm at the edge of the limit the car can have. For some others it's enough when the tires start to spueesh.
Next year Clio RS Gordini edition: 230 hp, 285 nm torque, cup chassis, 25 kg removed, 0 to 62 mph in 5.9 sec...
Would be interesting to see that Clio Cup edition go up against the Ford Fiesta RS (like Ken Block drives). Would also like to see the Mountune Fiesta up against a regular ST to see if the difference is really worth the extra cash.
People hate on the new clio because it's a betrayal to every previous Clio's hardcore heritage. We don't want a Golf with French build quality, proven by how few Clio 200 turbos you see here in the UK, Dead on arrival.
An ECU reprog on the Clio adds 40hp and 65nm for 590€ (240hp 305nm).
Karts are RWD, no suspensions, no differential, single break disk on the rear axle and very short wheelbase and they're completely awesome to drive!
The real reason is cost,it cost a lot of money to then put in a transmission tunnel and a drive shaft going to the rear. i do have a feeling that your just saying that though, sit in a megane 265RS and you wont believe how fast it is
I'm sorry Chris, but there's NOT more to it than that:
The Fiesta with the Mountune Kit is cheaper, faster in a straight line, faster on a track, and way more fun to drive.
The only winning points for the Clio are 5 doors (more practical) and a slightly more refined ride.
But we're talking hot hatches here, and when you're talking hot hatches who gives a damn about 5 doors or a softer ride?
All that matters are performance and smiles per mile. The Fiesta provides more of both. And all of that while being cheaper.
Enough said.
+diobruttoporco you would be amazed at how handy 5 doors are.... I own the clio. Love the fiesta but i wanted a car that was more livable for an everyday city commute. I always get excited when i see another hot hatch around. We are all enthusiasts that chose different cars for different reasons. And all of these hot hatches will put much larger and more powerful cars to shame under the right conditions.
+Daniel Bradey Move to the US. I got myself a 5 door Fiesta St. Just ignore all the political bullshit and the like.
so not the same gearbox in the clip cup car as in all the rs 4 road cars? Not sure I heard it right.
yeah i have a "black terd" stripped 91 si hatch with a d16z6 and a 5 speed as a daily driver... 35mpg and a HOOT to thrash on the streets
The next Renault Twingo mrk 3 will be RWD with engine at the rear. It's based on the fabulous Renault Twin'Run concept car (RWD, V6 3.5 320 HP) but without such an engine . It's still good for the next Twingo RS.
I would really like Renault to come to the US....
I would like to get a Clio, but they don't have them over here in the states. Considering a Fiesta though.
renault is the f1 champion and the only one exept ferrari who wins with chassis and engine of their own a title,my r19 i had was way better handling than my friend 106,his words...and realy way better relieable than my other friend golf, clio was after corrola that time and especialy energy engine 1,4,so many r19 and clio of that time stil work compare to golf and polo, some restect to the history of renault
The chassis in an F1 car probably costs about £200,000. Don't kid yourself into thinking Renaults are good just because they make good F1 cars. There have been two Renaults in my family, my grandad had a Scenic, and my cousin had a Megane Dynamique, both were nothing but trouble, my cousin has a Focus now, it's never missed a beat.
You should do a Ford Fiesta ST vs. the Opel Corsa OPC, same power range, both with a stick and pretty much same size (the European version of the Fiesta at least), would be great :)
Really liked the Vid and both cars, but I keep wondering what that performance upgrade was all about on the ST?. If I had kids but still wanted a small rocket I would no doubt take the Clio of those two. Perhaps the Fiesta should have been a 4 door in this vid ( like the two door much better though). The ST looks really good and I even liked the Clio a lot when that came out (contrary to a lot of others) the ST is just more appealing and aggressive looking - The Clio feels more grown up which might be good for non Hot Hatch versions but for HH not so. Good comparison.
Thanks for the english subtitles!!! it´s make easier to me understand the video!!
I´m from Brazil and english it´s not my native language!! So if can put subtitles in all of these videos i´ll be greteful!!
Thanks!! and congratulations for the channel!
a sporty car whit an automatic? hell no, sir
automatics are like elevators they are ment for pregnant women and old peaple
LOL Spilo, all supers cars have it these days, even BMW and Audi use it in their Hatchbacks like the M135i and RS3. Your statement is invalid.
Calm down guys, he's clearly trolling
Dreamon - The Belgian Critic Manual is standard on those cars. They give the customer a choice. Renault should have done the same thing. Would have made the car more appealing.
Neo VeNoM
The option should be there, i agree, but destroying a car solely on the transmission alone is horse crap. In the cars that i mention in the previous comment, Top Gear and neither Fifth Gear complaint about their Double Clutch transmission, however, some of them do offer it in manual. So basically they're just writing angry reviews about it because they don't have the "option" to go for manual.
+spiloFTW and people with baggage hahahaha
OK... so the clio the high performance one in the last part of the video. How do you get that kind of race car sound in a stock fiesta st or clio? Is that actually the sound from the exhaust or is it an entire different engine set-up? That sound is the coolest sound in the world and I would give my left leg to have that high pitch spooling whine of a race car in my stock fiesta st.
Let's wait for the clio RS Gordini in 2014... 230 HP, 285 nm torque, cup chassis, 25 kg less, 5.9 sec 0 to 100 km/h.
St fiesta the best car ever 😍🔥
30 degrees C is about 86 degrees F. That's pretty pleasant for most parts of the world.
The point, which Chris made; is that with the remap the Fiesta is still cheaper than a stock Clio and comes with manufacturer's warranty...
The Clio isn't better equipped though, no idea why people say that, you can't state the flappy paddle gearbox means better equipped as it pushes the Clios price up a lot.
Still waiting for the fiesta Rs
well, that never happened
Wish they had something like a SER Versa for America with that setup. All I would have to say is shut up and take my money if that happens. If I ever get a chance to live in Europe I will defiantly own one of those Clios.
I'm languishing in 35 degree heat in DC currently. I'd love 30 also.
makes me wonder whether that fiesta was driven with the air con on like in the early part of the video which shows the as air con on as we all know thiswill slow the car down a bit,but it will pee all over a standard clio sport.i know so(ive one in st3 guise).like chris says above 60mph it is so aggressive in mountune guise
first of all thank you AGAIN to Mr Harris for being the best thing on the internet and the second thing is that the Fiesta is the winner for me
although its always going to be with a username like mine.
I love it when Chris has to go and do some work .
'merican here. love my fiesta st. Got CPE rmm, turbo tech passenger/driver side mounts. RAMAir induction hose, and a Whoosh V3 fmic. total cost of the car in 2020 $:...23,850 :) this car is bitchin
You better bring a serious race car to the canons if your gonna hang with the Fiesta ST in the corners and off the turns she corners flat even the factory set up is far better than other cars that are modded out to try and beat the ford. I have driven lots of fast cars in my life but none even come close to the 2018 Ford Fiesta ST straight off the showroom floor. Taking tight corners at 80+ mph where others would slid off the road at 65 mph in the corners. Even a new Porsche 911 could not get away from me in the mountains. When I stopped for some coffee he pulled in beside me and even sit next to me while my breakfast order was being taken. He was shocked at the handling the stock mini hatch could muster in the corners. He said your car was on three wheels in the back you had one wheel off the ground he said. So you know we were all out on a public road no room for error what so ever.
You want me to get an Elise because the Fiesta is too fast? What a kook. I have 3 kids. I can drop them at school, drive to work in the rain (Caterham + rain = wet) and when it dry later take the long way home, somewhere like Warkworth, North Is, NZ west to SH18 or strap the boards to the roof and drive Auckland to Ohakune with 3 in the car. Lots of fun to be had on that drive and the two you mentioned won't cut it.
Yeah, it is using the other hand though, maybe if it were flipped it'd be easier to go between, but having driven both lhd and rhd, you'd be glad its the same, trust me.
Please do a video off a fiat 500 asseto corsee direct competitor for these 2 car!
air conditionning condensation water drain purging because of the brutal movement.
I guess the clio has a very good fundation to start more than the fiesta, but Renault goes into the way that much focused on the daily drive, because the old clio was already a trackday weapon, they dont have to build a more aggresive car.
