  • In this video we compared two kites (2006 Flysurfer Speed 2 12m and 2018 Flysurfer Soul 12m) to find out which kite, according to our friends, provides more value for money. The result of this new vs used kite challenge actually surprised us - enjoy!

    That’s exactly how I got into kiteboarding.. with $200 kites from 2007-2009 & slowly upgraded as I went along (keeps you excited when there are newer and better kites once you learn to handle the old ones). Great video & thanks for this review - I think it’s def worth watching this if you’re a beginner to make up your mind on your own

      There are lots of great kites on the used market. As we said in the video, it’s a lottery when buying used - but if you know what to look for there are deals to be found :)

      Yes, I just got an entire setup of a 2009 Cabrinha Switchblade 10, Convert 12, TT board, bars, new harness, pumps, golf bag (new) for just about 1G. The kites look barely used without repairs. Some videos that said not to buy 4+ year old kites scared me, but for getting back into kite boarding after many many years, I didn’t have the cash to get everything new. I also never rode up here in Canada, so for now it will have to do and I’ll update as time goes on (or if I really suck and I can’t get out at the right time) I may just sell it on. At least the investment wasn’t that big. Time will tell.

    You can also change the trim on the speed 2 so it has more depower or more umpf depending on your riding style. You should spend a minute to explain the settings and how they compare.

    Hello, I'm Vincent from France.
    I'm glad each time you post a new video :-) : many different points of view from all your friendly colleagues and serious facts checking, like in your review compairing woo 2 and 3...
    As Nicolas BOUDET and you, I would say that older kites need some checking before use for safety reasons, mostly a checking of the lines), and the quick release system.
    This apart, I ride more than 80 days a year with 4 old kites : HQ NEO2 11 (400 euros), PSYCHO 3 13
    (400 euros), SPEED3 15 (650 euros) and SPEED3 19 (450 euros because of 4 patches repairing holes).
    I don't aim to compete, and I have a great time in all my sessions, so much plaisure !
    Not less pleasure than my colleagues, on my home spot, who ride kites 8 times as expensive :-)
    Take care, and see you soon in a next vlog :-)

    Bought a bunch of used kites as well, for example 5 years old North Dice 10m with bar, in mint condition, 350 euro's.
    You have to be patience, if you need one today it won't work. Loads of people having very well maintained kites, sometimes almost not used, they seem to want to replace sets every x years.
    I buy 3 / 4 kites this way instead of 1 new one, and that kite won't be new as well after using it myself ;)
    And don't be too affraid for small problems, they can happen to your new kite as well, and most of the time they're easy to fix. It was the first thing I started to figure out before I was buying equipment, how to fix all kinds of problems that can happen. Most occuring problems can be fixed by yourself if you figure out how and be patience.

    My very first kite was FS Pulse2. I had no idea that it was like 8 years old when I bought it. But it was in sort of decent condition and I used it mostly for snowkiting. It's a really easy to use kite, very stable and friendly, but very sluggish and refused to jump for me. For now it has no use, since it was replaced by Fat Lady, gonna sell it and maybe get a bit bigger foil kite.

    • @OurKiteLife
      @OurKiteLife  5 років тому +1

      We used to have FS Pulse2 12m. It was good at the time, definitely not a jumper, but was more forgiving than speed2.

    I would've liked to see a test of the quick release. Quite a lot has changed in the safety department in those years. And after 13 years you can't be sure if it all still functions properly.

    A bit like buying a used car, you want the car er um kite that was only driven oops flown to the corner store and back. I still have my 12m^2 Speed III which I bought new, it is no longer flying as good as it did when new, porosity sets in, bridle lines stretch, bar corrodes (I hope they have sorted that problem out, putting stainless steel on aluminium, arggg the aluminium acts as the sacrificial anode). Buying second hand kites you rarely can try it out. Remember buying my son a Speed 1.5, not flown very much, I think that says it all. By he way, I mostly fly Flysurfer kites, Speed III, Psycho IV, Speed IV and Speed Lotus IV, ya so I do like Flysurfer kites.

    • @OurKiteLife
      @OurKiteLife  3 роки тому

      Definitely agree - the less used the better when buying a used kite. It’s always best to ask if you can fly the kite - even if it’s just on land, to get a feel for the condition. And while some things will be hard to judge without flying the kite, carefully inspecting the kite (and bar if buying that too) can tell you a lot :)

Even though my favorite kite is the Ozone Edge, Last winter I tested The FS Soul in 10 meters on skis on the Lac of 2 Mountains, Quebec and loved it! Very smooth and very agile kite and stays in the air in the lightest winds. It is very possible that I will buy one or 2 of them! 10m and a 15m and will keep my Ozone Edge in 7m and 9m for Boosting in TwinTip! Merry Chistmas!

      I might have a 2004 slingshot fuel sitting around in some back garage somewhere.... too bad shipping it from NZ would be too darn expensive. Oddly though I don't think kites back then were bad, but the bar and lines with their 20cm of depower at the bar was scary.

    you said you only surf in fresh water. I am from Michigan and have been dying to do this since I was a small child. But now I live in a different state, what conditions are needed for this kinda sport?

    • @OurKiteLife
      @OurKiteLife  2 роки тому

      You need a large body of water with enough fetch so that the wind isn’t turbulent (~5km+). You also need wind (in the appropriate direction for the spot). Sounds complicated but honestly I would Google kite spots + your state to see what shows up. If you’re serious about getting into the sport, 100% take lessons. The instructor will teach you what you need to know. Hope that helps!

    Uuummm that's my first kite the speed 2 12m. I ride hard all the time and doing it since 2009. My Speed 2 is in way worse shape then the one u have I maybe fix a broken line maybe once every two years. I've gotten good at patching my speed 2 and it flies great on snow and water. So I believe u can ride a flysurfer for 10+ years and nail any jump or trick. My speed 2 is my go to kite over my ocean rodeo 2018 12m roam. Kiting is a very expensive sport if u are always buying the latest and greatest then u are wasting ur money when u can be less wasteful and ride one solid kite for years and spend maybe 5 percent of the time fixing and repairing damage. On the other hand snow kiting is hard on my snowboard makes me go through a snowboard every year so always have to get new board.

    • @OurKiteLife
      @OurKiteLife  4 роки тому +1

      Thanks for your comment! We 100% agree with you - your kites can last a really long time if you take proper care of them. There's no need to constantly be upgrading. Funny you say that about your snowboards - we have had the same snowboards for 7 or 8 years. Mind you we don't get to snow kite a lot, but for our purposes, they're fine so long as we take care of them.

I am soo happy with my pumped kites now; don't have to worry about butterfly twists, unpredicable self collapsing of the canopy at lulls, crazy forces at the down-loops and pouring 500liters of water out of the kite after 2 hour self rescue misson. I would not fly this kite even if someone would pay me $500 for it.

      The new foil kites are pretty nice. I accidentally popped the safety in the waves, had a couple of waves crash over it. An inflatable would have probably gotten torn. Amazingly it straightened itself out and relaunched. So far I have never been stranded by a foil kite. I tend to use inflatables in the waves but I use foils when I don't feel like pumping. It's nice to ride in 2 minutes of walking up on the beach. In flat water, it's even faster. I just carry it out rolled up, unroll, let it drift while I unroll the lines, it fills up and goes. Also like them in light wind. They'll stay in the air and relaunch when inflatables won't.

      I had the exact same one in white, had similar experiences several times and felt the same way. However, there is something special about a foil that made me come back to them. Snowkiting, landboarding and especially here in Ontario, the conditions can be a pain in the butt so having several different tools including foils most times is a must :-) I'm a proud owner of Lotus 21 metre haha

      Probably because of local spot tradition. When you are a beginner, you look at the experienced riders in your spot. Foil kites are great for spots where you often have lighter winds and a grass space to rig it up. Add more trees and remove the open space like in more tricky spots where you hardly can lay your lines out and noone uses foil kites.

    • @OurKiteLife
      @OurKiteLife  5 років тому +2

      The wind in Ontario is usually below 15 knots. Foils excel in low wind kiting - we have tested it many times. Our most used kite is 15. Add the fact that wind is up high and tends to shut down in minutes, having a foil kite vs inflatable means you can body drag to the beach as they stay up longer in the air. As Martin replied, it’s a local thing, foils just work best for our spot.

      Привет, Тралка. Если в двух словах, то ребята взяли флай 2006 за 200 канадских долларов и 2018 года за 3000 для сравнения. То есть разница в цене в 15 раз. После сравнения вердикт следующий: Кайт 2006 года хуже: тяжелая планка, худшая маневренность, хуже реланч, меньше лифт, хуже себя ведет на порывистом ветре, но тем не менее на этом кайте вполне можно кататься и может кто-то сможет получать удовольствие тоже. Они в этом тесте не сравнивали систему безопасности. Конечно, между кайтами 2006 и 2018 года слишком большой промежуток по времени. Один из тестирующих сказал, что кайт 2006 года , это как Хёнде акцент (те ездить вполне можно), а вот 2018 год это как феррари. Другими словами, если ,бабок нет совсем, то тогда можно и за 200 долларов, если чуток есть, то лучше посмотреть на 2013 -2014 годы, конструктивно уже очень близко, разница в каталке будет несущественной, а цена упадет в разы. А если бабла дофига, то можно не заморачиваться)))) . Удачи!

      We thought about doing that, but given we had the original bar we decided to use it. Honestly the difference in bars is mostly just the look of them

    Speed 2 is pointless. But you could get speed 3 for like 500-600$ AND IT WORKS LIKE A DREAM

      speed 3 is definitively a humongous improvement over speed 2

    It is not a good comparrison. Just take a well known brand against a brand that is cheaper. Then compare it. Comparing kites with 12 years difference in technologie isnt a comparrison.

    I am a bit worried 🥶by your experiment that seems to tell us that it is possible to begin with very budget kites.
    The point is that you are all very skilled and you can choose the appropriate conditions, make a full check of the lines, the safety devices,the brand and the detail status and not put you in danger...
    Most beginners will not and may be let in huge danger by poor quality old big kites that owner would be wise to not sell at all, and keep for their own museum 😉!
    Appart that it is a good option to start with a second or third hand kite, but not very old and double checked by an experienced kiter taking in account your beginner’s level!🤓
    Indeed Soul is a very good kite (I got the 15m2), but I personally would not recommend to begin with a foil kite before a good master of tube kites😎

      Beginners is a separate topic that we will touch on in the future. Which kite a beginner should choose as their first kite... that's opening a can of worms - Foil vs LEI, etc.... Definitely not suggesting beginners jump on an older kite, but if you are already riding - then sure. With that said a lot of the people featured in the video learned on Speed1s, Speed2s, even Psycho2s from 2005.

      My very point is the status of old kites, far to be new!, which is quite difficult to evaluate by beginners.
      I had the experience last week with someone starting beach roller kite on a very large hard sand beach at low tide, with a good 14kts on side wind, so very good conditions, as I was fighting with strong shore break to go upwind on the water😎
      His foil kite was from ages and after 1 or 2 min his lines broke and the kite started to loop out of control
      The guy was quite lucky to just finish with broken arm, injured shoulder and elbow...
      So just pay attention that old kites may not have even their value for money!
      I also saw young guys who found a 14m2 kite in a garbage, and were ready to try to fly it without help or experience...🥶🤬

      For sure, as we said, buying a used kite is a lottery, so it is always better to have someone more experienced helping you choose one. Unfortunately we see it too many times, when beginners buy and try kites that they have no idea of what they are. Definitively would be great to compile a list of tips for beginners of what things to look for when buying a used kite.

      Nicolas, your points about safety are very relevant.
      But about beginning on tube kites, I don't agree with you : I began on foil kites, and at this day, I never rode a tube kite in my life :-)
