- Installing LED license plate lights on a 2000 BMW E39 M5. I purchased these lights from Ebay, but I do not have a specific part number or model number for you. Simply search for "E39 LED License Plate Lights" and select a set that look like what you want. My pair was $22 after shipping. Installation is very simple, as you can see in this video. They are certainly much brighter than the stock halogens, and it makes the car look quite a bit more more modern. Color temperature is about 6,000 kelvin.
These should work with nearly any BMW model, including E38 7 series, E39 5 series, E46 3 series, E53 X5 series, E83 X3 series, E60 5 series, E65 7 series, E9x 3 series, and so fourth. The LED lights that I purchased had both the older and newer style connectors for power available, so compatibility is very broad.
Good luck, thanks for watching!
many thanks! I bought the led bulb only from pep boys and thanks to your video I finished the job hassle free in 10 minutes. Looks great!
video was very helpful I have a 2002 X5 and ya with you describing everything and showing what you could I got it done with no problems thanks
Just replaced mine with LEDs. I really like it. Definetely tons brighter than the originals but not over the top. The E39 is such a beautifully designed car which still looks modern to this day. It wears subtle upgrades like this really well. Im waiting for 6000K LED Angel Eyes bulbs as well as Philips 6000K Xenon bulbs. Cant wait to see how it looks!
Nice Ryan maybe i wanna do that on my e46 320ci looks cool man keep it up
Columbus here 😀
perfect thanks! btw, computer doesn't recognize these at least in my car so no flicker, no notification light.
thanks for the tip. I was able to slide it over and out just as you described. Thx.
Useful but you rushed through the actual removal procedure which is the hardest part and didn't actually show it.
Fabian Dee with one hand not possible
Taking a look inside the owner's manual would help you out
I have those same lights on my E39. After two months one of them have started to give off way less light than the other one, and flickers a little bit. Gonna have to see if I can get them to send me a new one. They look pretty good, even more so on the US style license plate slot in the trunk. The EU style plate is much wider, so the light is spread out a little more, leaving the middle of the plate slightly darker
very helpful video, man! thanks for feedback. love the LED look.👍
Ryan, do you always fill up full tank when the light comes on, or how much do you put in? What's you're method of saving fuel? Cheers
Never mind. Got it done. Thanks man
Definitely gonna get these lights for my E39 :D btw Ryan what LED bulbs are you using for your angel eyes? Would love to see a video on those. I got these on mine: iJDMTOY 7000K 10W CREE High Power LED from amazon. They are bright in the night and visible in the daytime (not like the F10 though)..anyways cheers and props on the good work and helpful vids and the success of E39 source bro :)
Probably just shoot it with some smoke tint paint or LaminX smoke protective covers to make it dimmer. I found a pair at Pick N Pull with a pair of aftermarket tail lights for my 740iL. I'll give them a shot. If too bright I'll do the LaminX thing
Beautiful car bro, that's my dream car I'm currently driving a 01 525i and still love it, hope to get a m5 soon, my licence plate lights don't turn on at all never noticed it till I got pulled over the other day, do you think somethin is wrong with wires or the bulbs just went out?
What was the quote for that rust repair? I have that similar rust around the license plate bulbs
hey, did your car come stock with the clear tail lights? if not where did you purchase? planning on face lifting all my 2000 528i lights
Mine is a 2000 so it came with the prefacelift tail lights. I bought the Hella facelift retrofit kit from Turner Motorsport to update them. I have a video of it on the channel.
oh okay thanks appreciate it, found them
why mines completely different (one big plastic panel) without any wires, 2002 touring, also my left side is not working at all..
I have a worry about this. So from what I understand, even if you code the bulb check to be off, they'll still flicker periodically right? Is there a way to prevent that periodic flicker?
They shouldn't flicker once they are on, at least I have never noticed that with my car.
yr not using LEDs are you?
So I bought the LED conversion kit from Tuner, and it replaced the license plate bulbs themselves with an LED with 3 diodes in each. I found that they flicker a bit and my right side completely died at one point. I went back to halogens to fix it, but the right side is still not working and I have no light errors on the dash.
Why is it that yours don't flicker? I can't go back to halogens after seeing how well the LEDs look.
The LED bulbs for this application are hit and miss. I had to replace mine a few times initially before I found a good set that has now worked well for years.
@E39Source Did the ones in the video prove to be good over time? I can't find the exact ones, but I see similar.
They were replaced once or twice in the months following this video. Then the final set I installed about 8-9 years ago is still holding up. @@paganiluv9552
Ryan. My trunk lid looks like this lid. However I have a 2003 330i. I want to install the backup camera in replace of the light. Do you have video that shows the trunk lid getting wires to the rear seat. My lid is tight and there is no room to move and pull them to the hose for entry into the trunk. Any ideas or video?
Thanks guy
I have considered doing a backup camera as well, using the license plate light/camera gadget. The bottle neck of this project would be getting the wires through that rubber hose into the trunk lid itself. I don't know of a way to do this without destroying the hose yet, which would lead to many other problems down the road. Maybe an automotive / electrical specialist would have the tools required to push just one or two more wires through there without damaging it? It might cost $100 to have that done, but could be well worth it.
cool - perfect. thanks for video. peace
How much did it cost you to fix the rust i have the exact same thing
+Kevin Sahib At my local body shop, it's around $200-$300 to fix something like that. They re-painted the whole vertical part of the trunk lid.
I have led but want to put new ones in... but I can't unplug them. Any help?
Those connectors can get very sticky. Pry the tabs open and use a flat head screwdriver to force the connector off gently.
@E39Source thank you I'll give it a go
Nice video thanks
I got this from ebay too, but mine is flickering.
Hey Ryan, do you know what I can do to stop my c pillar map light fixture from falling out? It does it when the car is parked and the interior sensor trips my anti-theft system.
There is likely a broken clip, I would replace the light.
@@E39Source as always thanks brother!
Hi maybe you can help me out, I got an e36 and my number plates light are not working. I have changed the bulbs and fuses still same problem. Than I have purchased led replacement units. Still same issue, have you got any clues on what the problem is
Hmm, good fuses, fresh bulbs, still no power? That is interesting. I don't know what else it could be, I'm no electrical engineer. Check all lighting-related fuses I guess. All of the other lights work?
Too bright - I prefer the halogens. I do like the 'heater coil' red rear lighting on the M5 - very cool and retro -- I think BMW used the same on the Z4 coupe.
Ryan! We need to meet up sometime, I'm close to Akron and definitely would be nice to discuss cars!
its a nice car bro
So I have a bmw 325i 1994. One of my license plate light do not have the wire to plug into the license plate light assembly. What should I do?
+TheThunderbolt24 It has to be there, look up in the drunk lid, maybe it got pushed up there.
+E39Source thanks for the advice. I didn't even think about that. I will definitely check.
hello,..... where did you buy the light? thanks
+Joy Gonzales eBay, as it says in the description.
Same process for touring?
I would assume so, yes.
This guy's voice sounds sooooo familiar... Does he have another channel on UA-cam?
renragged I've had several. RyanKnowsTech, Jamesrschultz, Tech Cores, and Tech Inform.
I must have seen some of your other videos. I never forget a voice. :D
If there too bright for you I would just tape off one row of light and spray paint the lens black. Just and idea.
Don't suppose you have a link to them do you?
The listings change too often, just search for BMW E39 LED License Plate Lights.
Nice job, much better with the LED bulbs.
Amazing
Where are the fuses on the BMW X3 2008
Giancarlo Vendittelli There are generally two locations for fuses that are user accessible. The first is in the glovebox. Up on top you will see two white thumbscrews. Turn these and the fuses will drop down.
The second is probably in the trunk somewhere. Check your owners manual to be sure.
Thanks man
Slide right or left? Lol. Srs though
He didn't show how to disconnect the module.
+T Anderson 1. Press tab.
2. Pull.
Sooo bright, ya can’t read the plate!
boom...lol. good job
Skip the the process of removing the wire
Push the tab on the side of the electrical connector, and wiggle it off!
Have you, or anyone posting here, have an issue with the LED festoon replacement bulb (not like this swap out) getting so hot, that car smells like burning plastic/wires? It goes away if I take the LED bulb back out and put OEM bulb back in. I've tried two and three SMD with same results and from different companies too. They come with a heat sink and I even added two more, same results. This is the last one I tried replacing with and same burning smell (but nothing is actually burning. But somehow the heat causes the plastic light housing to give off vomit inducing smell. Probably not healthy. :-)

So now I'm thinking the 24 SMD kit. I'm nervous because 2 SMD's is too hot, but since the 24 SMD kit actually has a new housing, maybe it'll be ok. Alternately, I'm thinking of the more expense 3 LED CREE kit. But heard cree has a lot of heat. I called the seller, but he couldn't tell me which is hotter, if at all. :-(
