And actually called Bobby, who was acting as a scout. My goodness, he couldn't have been any nicer on the phone w/me. No airs about him, and we had a great conversation. The old tyme players were like that, very personable. When my son played as a captain at the Jr All star game, Gordie dropped the ceremonial puck. And after the game, we talked old tyme hocked for well over an hour. Those boy's were so mesmerized by how personable he was. I think Gordie would've talked to us all night long. Don Cherry was 'Hockey night in Canada', Back when it was an event instead of an unwatchable exercise in virtue signaling as it is now. The CBC was always tuned in on Saturday nights. 'Even here in Detroit 'Grapes' is regarded with great honor And is one of my alltime favorite Canadians because he spoke his mind. Wokeness be damned

    • @patrice5976
      @patrice5976 Рік тому

He spoke his mind alright. That’s why he’s your all-time favourite Canadian? The fact the CBC had this narcissistic racist bigot on for 35 years trashing the folks from Quebec obviously shows the irrational contempt many Canadians hold for the province of Quebec. I’ll say this, Americans are way nicer to deal with than the “polite” Canadians. Our great neighbours to the south are more genuine, treat Quebeckers with courtesy, humour and respect, unlike the “nice & polite” Canadian who’ll badmouth you as soon as you turn away, and if they could get away with it they’d backstab you.
Wasn’t Don Cherry voted one of the six greatest Canadians on a survey conducted by the CBC? (???) Grapes didn’t become a Canada icon and one, if not the most beloved and influential figure in this country because he won any Stanley Cups or promoted peace on earth. No, by broadcasting to millions, loud and clear, what Canadian really think but couldn’t say publicly. From his HNIC tribune the exalted Grand priest would unabashedly bark his fiery, very hostile sermon, taking a regular dump on Quebec folks. He couldn’t help himself, he just looooved putting down the “frenchies”, who made a HUGE contribution to this country. Yet they were dissed on NATIONAL TELEVISION for 35 years : “despicable cowards” “wimps” “cry-babies” on and on, He’s the shameless national conscience of this “phookin” country. Canadians loved him for speaking his mind… Him reaching legendary status constantly denigrating Quebec exposed a huge section of Canadians as entitled hypocrites and racistes bigots.

4:22 "He had his greatest year playing for me."
Goal scoring for sure. But he won the Hart Trophy from 70-72 and had 139 points in 1971.
    18:12 "I don't have any regrets."
One more reason for me to be glad he was fired.
30:57 Bobby Hull was left wing.
31:33 "Coffey would go to the outside, Bobby would go on the inside."
Ahhh... that helps explains why Coffey didn't have the knee problems Orr had. That was nice to know.

yeah he had a good year but obviously there was not much tread left on the tires by then - he barely played after that

@@pjpredhomme7699 You know, I keep hearing people say, "If only they had the arthroscopic knee surgery technology back then that they do now."
But I looked online and the person who invented that technology was a Canadian! And it was first performed on a Toronto Argonaut in 1967!
I wonder why he didn't do that.
Same with knee replacement surgery. That was first done in 1968. Was it good enough by 1976 that he could've just done that? No more knee pains, no more worrying about his knees locking up. Sigh...

Don Cherry says that today's players don't know how to take a it. Well, that's because players of the 80s, 70s, 60s, they learned to play hockey with contact forme the age of 12 (maybe earlier) at a time kids had not much protection and the were aware that they had to protect themselves. Today, players learned to plays in an armour (not that I don't agree, we have to proctect our children) and skating the eyes on the puck, not seeing if anyone is coming to hit them.
Last week, Andrew Cogliano was hurt with a broken neck. Well, take a few minutes, watch the replay of the hit and see how he was positioned just before receiving a hit. No wonder why is neck was broken.
Today's game is fast and the guys are biger.
Minor hockey have to take the time to coach the kids how to protect themselves and how to carry the puck with the head up.

I was totally loving seeing Coach Cherry on your show Chris. I didn't like him at all as the Bruins coach however as a fine wine he grew on me on Hockey Night in Canada on Coach's Corner. Now he is one of my favorite hockey people. Thank you Chris for this classic interview with a true gentleman of hockey. And he was a great supporter of Canadian troops.
