I love this song, and Annie Lennox in general. This is a raw and poignant ballad and her first release after going solo. I interpret it as her grappling with the end of a relationship that had defined her life up to that point. You can hear the fear, hope, and uncertainty about the future alongside her questioning what went so wrong in the past, the pressure placed on her by herself and others, and finally this acceptance that her life will go on regardless of whether or not others understand her decisions. It's a lament that offers compassion alongside defiance, acceptance alongside uncertainty.
@@karinanderson9722 Just wanted to comment, but you literally took the word out of my mouth as I wanted to write down exactly the same. Doesn't matter. What matters is that it has been said.😊 Merry Christmas
Bowie and Lennox duo both the performance and the rehearsal are gorgeous. A must to see both. Bowie calls her incomparable when bringing her onstage. Bowie does this song with Queen (who wrote it) but I like this more. “Under Pressure”
One of top 10 best song ever written list is "Why." Annie is one of my all-time favorite artist. This song is intense about the complexities of her relationship to Stewart and it talks about the difficult elements in relationships. The wisdom is to know what needs to be said and what doesn't. The wisdom is also to know when you outgrown a situation or person and moving on.
@@robertgieseler1220That's why I avoid relationships. Sometimes I think "would be nice if someone would be here" in the evening, but never in the morning. And I don't want to go through those situations so many songs find their topics in.
This was on her first solo I bought and it was after she and her partner Dave Stewart, her partner in the Eurythmics separated, so I assumed it was about that. This is a favorite song of mine! She’s incredible!
@@suemoore6445 Her Eurythmics partner's name is David, not Jon. And they were never married. In fact, they were apart even when Eurythmics began in 1981. They only were a couple in The Tourists, her band prior to Eurythmics.
What Annie does here is incredible - to put forth an argument, quite like an actual argument would probably go, with admissions of guilt but the self-defense, the pointing out of the other's faults, but at the same time in a way that conveys the emotion of what she's going through. It's like the words are a cry of pain and a rational exploration of relationships at the same time. It's an incredible achievement. It floored me when I first heard it when it came out, and it continues to floor me to this day. And then there's the video, where she puts on her persona, her appearance of strength, her war paint simultaneously as her words and voice portray her becoming more and more vulnerable and falling apart, but also resolving to be defiantly herself at the same time.
I really love the melody, which takes its sweet time to unwind; even though it's pretty simple, it's hugely effective, helped of course by her gorgeous singing. I haven't always liked her solo stuff, but this first album is very good throughout. Sometimes the production is so flawless that it can sound rather sterile, but on this song, the synths express real warmth.
I’ve been a fan of Annie since I first heard ‘Sweet Dreams’ in 1983. She’s a TRUE artist. I’ve always interpreted this video as her showing that she has to put is a costume and pretend to be someone she is not (a persona) to sell her artistry. In the scenes wheee she is actively posing for the photographer, her movements feel forced and awkward. But when she isn’t posing…when she’s being her resolute self - she is truly beautiful. Knowing how intelligent and introspective she is I absolutely believe this was all intentional.
Fun facts: The song is a musical representation of the Kübler-Ross model of grief… Lennox has also experienced other challenges in her life, including: A marriage that lasted less than a year The stillbirth of her son Daniel Fruchtmann in 1988 A lifelong struggle with depression… As I’ve grown, I learned to appreciate this song more and more and how pretty it is… Same lilting feeling to me as ONLY TIME by ENYA.
When I'd hear this song on the car radio it would stick with me. It would be a while before I heard it again, so I got tired of waiting and bought it on iTunes.
In my feeling and opinion, the best piece she ever wrote, composed, enacted etc. This hasn't changed for me a tiny bit through the decades (Gasp...!😯) since it was released. A breathtaking masterpiece of art and honesty. Oh, if I'm not mistaken, Annie turned 71 yesterday. Merry Christmas 🎄🎆🎀from Germany
I watched an interview somewhere and she said that the video is a visual representation of the mental process she undergoes as she changes from herself backstage to "The Diva" onstage. I can see that.
Annie is one of the best singers out there. The emotional connection she has with her songs is insane! Thank you for your reaction and anoher one for the person who requested this song. I don't know them, but I already know we have some kind of a bond. THANK YOU 🫶🙏 Merry Christmas everybody! 🎅🎅🎅 P.S. It's a shame nobody asked for Celine Dion's "O Holy Night" from her Christmas tv special in 1998 😟

Gotta love a dude who nods his head up & down and then pauses for 2 secs to then nod his head back & forth all during the first 30 secs before the vocals kick in.
Annie Lennox was with guitarist & producer Dave Stewart in the 80's with songs like 'There must be an angel', in the 90's she went solo in 1992 & also did well. It was Dave Stewart who met her in a bar where she was a waitress. He spoke to her & hey presto she became famous with Dave Stewart. They split up in the early 90's as she decided to go solo & did well. She is a brilliant singer on & off studio work & stage. 'Why' was a song made by her for Dave Stewart & sad at the time to leave the duo. But they still stayed friends.
I am really glad I found your channel. This is a complex piece, and you plunged into the heart of it. You weren't afraid to go deep, and I appreciate that!
I was never an Eurythmics or Annie Lennox fan, but I DO love this song. It is a beautifully written song. I love her voice and backing vocals in it as well.
This lovely woman went through a horrible divorce, and this album is the reaction to that. Just listen to the lyrics of this song at the end - "these are the words I never said, these are the dreams I never met...do you know how I feel?"
🎀🎀🎀🎀🎀 so so so great Saeed. This song was born in the era of amazing music videos. Just so happens that song is magical on its own , without a video. I have listened to this song so many times.
