Lemmy, I just purchased the new 2016 HD Roadster 1200, and I love it. All your videos are great and I'm excited about your HD Sportster series as it is helping decide on what parts and mods I'm going to buy from RevZilla. The product reviews are great but you do an even better job going through the installation for these parts. It's like you're my mechanic and my BFF helping me out wrenching on these parts. You're doing an amazing service to me and the biker community. Keep up the great work and I can't wait to get my order in.
Lemmy, I see you've reviewed rear suspension exclusively in this video. Us guys with older sportys don't have the best set of front forks. I think HD only updated the sportster suspension in 2014. The older suspension tends to bottom on slightly uneven asphalt and dives when you brake very hard. It would be great to have a review video on some front fork options. I've been researching this recently and I've found the Ohlins NIX22, KTech Tracker IDS, Progressive Suspension Full Cartridge Kit and the Race Tech Cartridge Emulator. Maybe we can have a part 2 to this suspension mod series...
Thanks for throwing in the Burly Stiletto shocks. I had a shop guy tell me they were complete garbage and I should go Progressive instead. This shows it's more about what you want out of your ride, not the brand. Definitely know what shocks I'm getting! Awesome video guys!!
I put a set of roadking "air ride" shocks on my '07 Nightster, worked pretty well for the money. Only gave $100 for them. I'm sure most of these aftermarket options would work better, but just another idea for you sportster owners out there.
Fantastic vids. You guys just keep getting better with all the info in a simple easy to understand way and with all the options to read more in depth reviews of each. Awesome.
Having just picked up a 2016 1200 Custom, I've watched this series a few times. As someone else mentioned, what about the front suspension? Having raised the rear and with you being of substantial girth, you would think you should add stiffer springs up front to balance out the change you made to the rear. You can see in the vids how compressed the front is even just riding normally around town. A suggestion on what to do with the front would have been nice.
Just came across y’all’s series here, & this is the episode I’m most excited to see! Love what y’all do and all the help ya provide! Y’all rock! Keep the shiny side up ⬆️ and the rubber down⬇️😎🤙
Putting aside the bike mods themselves... Your videos are very well filmed and the way you explain things is just perfect ! As soon as i finish building my home I'm getting an 883 (just gotta get the wife on board LOL) Job well done my friend, props and love from Israel.
I've had my eyes set on this bike since 2016 once I get back from Afghanistan I'm definately picking this up thank you for giving me/us some options to set on the 883
It's a matter of taste. I have my 883 Iron slammed almost all the way down, and installed Builtwell Chump handlebars, 'cause I screwed up my sholder and it's painful to lean forward on handlebars. The slight rise of the bars allowed the clearance to install the mirrors below the bars. It gives gives you real sport bike lines, without the jacked up rear end, and the uncomfortable "handstand" ride.
As a big, tall guy interested in the Iron, I'm hoping that you guys show how to move the mid-sized foot controls to forward foot controls, especially as a part of the seat episode!
Just bought a used 883 superlow and it came with Burly 10 inch shocks and I love the shocks but sadly I can't get over speed bumps very easy. Keep that in mind when you buy shocks.
Another awesome video Lemmy and team. Every episode I have to re-evaluate my savings account to see what to get first... Do you guys post overseas? I'd rather spend a few quid more to get a product from a good source who make things like this than locally.
Not only does the bronze trim let people know its not stock, the big space space between the tire and the fender do the same. In my opinion, you get an Iron cause its low. Looks like your building the new Roadster 1200. If you dont already have an Iron, and you want these same upgrades, the Harley Roadster might be for you. The Roadster already has more horsepower, no need for upgraded exhaust system and fuel controller. It already has more ground clearance and comes with a pillion seat and pegs. Of coarse if you want a better sound you could get slip ons for less than the whole system. The suspension is better all around and comes with dual front disks. Lemmy, I enjoy watching your videos. Thanks
The ride height has always been my biggest complaint, I scrap my exhaust and kickstand all the time. They should have added about an inch and a half to the shocks.
I got the screaming eagle suspension for my superlow Harley 2012. Im still now show how to adjust the suspension settings..? like a video on how to determine the best setting for these overly complicated suspensions.
Is there a build forum of what exactly had to be changed to install 15" stiletto shocks? Any obstruction with master cylinder or anything besides shorter pipes?
Im very confused, arent you supposed to raise the front of the bike if you drastically raise the rear? Have always heard it can dangerously alter handling if you dont equalize both front and back???
Great Video! I have a 2017 Iron. I want to upgrade the shocks to increase ground clearance, but I also want to make sure the seat still sits lower than the handlebars. Will the 14" Legend Revo A's accomplish this or will I also need to change the front? What about the Progressive 970s? They are about the same price, but your mention of the "spacer" issue is making me a bit nervous to install...What do you think?
The 14" Legends will definitely give you a lot of ground clearance while keeping the seat below the handlebars. We don't have anything to raise the front, but if you want some quicker steering, then you don't need to raise the front anyway. They're an easy install, so you shouldn't have to worry about spacers. -DrewZilla *www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/legend-suspension-revo-a-coil-shocks-for-harley-sportster-2004-2017
Thank you! Unfortunately you're out of the Standard Duty...Only have the heavy duty in stock. I ride 1-up at ~200 Pounds so I don't think the heavy duty are the right choice...oh well. Thanks again.
What length Progressive 970 shocks did you put on this Sportster I'm looking to get some and I like the amount of increased clearance you have on that set up I have a 2009 Harley Davidson Nightster I hate scraping pegs and bottoming out on speed bumps
What about front suspension? As a large rider (265 lbs) I'd love for my front forks to not bottom out during heavy braking. Is it possible to install longer and/or stiffer springs in the fork tubes? How would one go about doing that?
so what ground clearance you managed to achieve with these 13inch piggy back shocks? can these enable you to pass the 30 degree lean angle of the sporster, thus having more fun into the turns?
Hello, Would the 970's deal with a little bit of off roading mixed with highway rides? what do you suggest? What kind of custom suspension should we get for Indian roads for touring? Considering we might need a little more ground clearance and not feel every bump on the road as we do with the stock shocks on our roads.
With the 14" and 15" shocks can a taller tire be put on this bike without any issue?I have a 2016 I just ordered progressive suspension 15 in. heavy duty 413 Series Shocks ...
i have 2016 1200c custom i added 12 inch progressive to the rear i love em but it was way to much gangsta lean...bought new jiffy stand one inch added length now my bike stands almost completely vertical i'm always afraid its gonna fall over...others move their bikes away in fear mine will tip and cause a domino effect...what jiffy stand do i need...please help me!
Late to the conversation but I'm wondering if the increased shock length also increased cornering prowess. I'm looking at an XL1200T model and that seems to be the biggest complaint- lack of cornering clearance. If shocks could fix that, it might make my decision easier.
Longer shocks offer more cornering clearance, as well as adjusting the trail up front meaning the bike is happier to turn in compared to a lower rear shock. -Zack
I’m 5’5 162 lbs. I want some 10.5 shocks and every review I see people tend to go with longer shocks because they’re taller than me and much heavier. I’m assuming weight matters especially w short shocks. So my question is, with me being 162 lbs will the ride still be as rough?
Lemmy, I definitely appreciate some of those mods but i really need something that makes the bike LEAN in the bends! We're talking 40 degree lean angle here! Higher and less bulky footpegs, rearsets and an exhaust like the bassani radial sweepers.... What do you think? What else do you suggest along those lines? Cheers
Be careful, as the Radial Sweepers may not work with rearsets. Instead, consider the Roland Sands Slant 2-Into-1 or Vance & Hines Upsweep 2-Into-1, Progressive 413 Shocks, and Roland Sands Rearsets (which include slimmer pegs). -DrewZilla (www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/roland-sands-slant-2-into-1-exhaust-for-harley-sportster-2014-2016) (www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/vance-hines-upsweep-2-into-1-exhaust-for-harley) (www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/progressive-413-series-shocks-for-harley-sportster-1986-2015) (www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/roland-sands-rearsets-for-harley-sportster)
What size of the 970s did you guys end up using? I'm planning on getting an Iron 883 as my first bike and was looking at those shocks and they asked me what size.
I read on a forum that a theory was because in EU the number plate on the side is illegal, so to make room for the under the fender-plate, they had to increase rear shocks. But its just a theory, no one is able to confirm it..
I'm thinking about putting some drag specialties 12.5 on my superlow so I don't bottom out with me and my wife.. heard anything about these shocks? Great video!
Yes, they're a decent, affordable option for raising your Sportster up, and they work better than the stock shocks. -DrewZilla *www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/drag-specialties-ride-height-adjustable-shocks-for-harley-sportster-2004-2017
I didn't think the 15inch Stilettos fitted a 2016 iron? Any chance you could do a video on the adjustments required or direct me to one? Read the Burly instruction manual and don't feel too confident attempting it without better direction
I should have said they don't fit the stock 2016 Iron. So if you want them to fit, you may need to run an aftermarket exhaust that eliminates the stock exhaust bracket. You also may need to adjust the clearance of the rear brake rod and master cylinder assembly. We probably won't be able to make a video just for that modification (Lemmy costs more than you might think!), and I haven't found a different video for it either. If you don't feel confident, I'd reach out to one of the Sportster forums out there. -DrewZilla
I have a sporty 883, for the 970s, I'm 240lbs 5'10. What height should I get the 970s and how many threads down should I go? Plan on having my wife in the back , how would I go about adjusting it from there?
For the 15 inch burly, did you have to make any adjustment to exhaust or drive belt etc to accommodate the increase in height? Looked at Burly website and the said this may be required.
Yes, the drive belt needs to be adjusted when going shorter or taller than stock. As for the exhaust, it shouldn't really be affected by the drive belt. -DrewZilla
Thanks Lemmy superb just the review I was looking for as my UK spec iron 2015 shock are rubbish, one set you missed was Ohlins but that aside I agree the progressive look ace. It is real shame that Revzilla don't have a Great Britain out let please!!!!????!!!😎
Threads like the threads of a screw. You count how many notches of the threads are showing. Clicks mean actual clicks of a preload adjuster. -DrewZilla
Hello Lemmy. Great informative video. I am already a fan. Needed some advice though. I live in India and have a 2012 model Iron 883N Sportster. The ground clearance and suspension suck, especially with uneven roads here. I was looking for an improved ground clearance of 140 mm approx. Will the Progressive 412 13" Heavy Duty be a good replacement ? Do I need to change the front fork springs as well ? Kindly advice.
Heavy Duty shocks are only necessary if you ride the bike at or near the OEM maximum load rating over 50% of the time, so you probably don't need the heavy duty shocks. I recommend the standard duty 13" shocks for the rear. For the front, you can keep the stock height but could benefit from Progressive Fork Springs or a Progressive Monotube Fork Cartridge Kit. -DrewZilla *www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/progressive-412-series-shocks-for-harley-sportster-2004-2016 *www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/progressive-fork-springs-for-harley-sportster-street-2004-2015 *www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/progressive-monotube-fork-cartridge-kit-for-harley-sportster-2007-2015
I want to turn my 2001 sporty into a NorCal style Sportster with 8+ over fork. How will that affect the rear suspension? Would the progress series suspension upgrade complement the longer front forks?
It won't affect the rear too much, but it'll certainly affect the front! It's gonna be a lot harder to maneuver the bike at slow speeds. With the longer front, you want to keep the rear stock length or shorter (definitely not longer). You will want an inch longer kickstand though. -DrewZilla
Hey man.. Thanks for all info. I hve a 48 2016..I am in India. I like riding long. Sometimes with a pillion. But on a long ride, my tailbone hurts and my ass hurts. It numbs out and hence I need to get down after couple of hours. Is it the seat? I hate the bumps too. What is the suspension I should go for?
Changing the seat will allow you to ride comfortably for longer, and upgrading the suspension will help with the bumps. For a more comfortable two-up seat, I recommend the Danny Gray TourIST. For suspension, consider the good/better/even better/best Progressive 412, 430, 444, or 970 rear shocks. Stock rear shock length is 11". You should only need standard duty springs. -DrewZilla *www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/danny-gray-tourist-2-up-seat-for-harley-sportster-2004-2015 *www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/progressive-412-series-shocks-for-harley-sportster-2004-2016 *www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/progressive-430-series-shocks-for-harley-sportster-2004-2015 *www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/progressive-444-series-shocks-for-harley-sportster-1986-2015 *www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/progressive-970-series-piggyback-shocks-for-harley-sportster-2004-2015
hi, i have a 2016 48 that i want to lower the back end to 10 inch or 10.5. Is there a shock i can use and still have a passenger without having to go with air suspension?
You might get some fender rubbing, but limiting suspension travel can do that. You can crank up the preload for 2-up riding to give yourself the best chance of avoiding the rubbing though. -DrewZilla
A 12" shock would be a good length. It won't ruin the lines. Progressive 444 and 970 shocks would be my recommendations for better and best ride quality. -DrewZilla (www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/progressive-444-series-shocks-for-harley-sportster-1986-2015) (www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/progressive-970-series-piggyback-shocks-for-harley-sportster-2004-2015)
The 15" Stilettos may require some customization to allow them to fit a 2011 Nightster. Burly only recommends the 13" Stilettos as a direct bolt-on for the Nightster. -DrewZilla *www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/burly-13-cafe-stiletto-rear-shocks-for-harley-sportster-1986-2016
Question: I've been wanting 15in shocks on my 17 sportster 48 but every website says they don't fit my bike but this video uses 15 in burley stiletto shocks. Will those shocks fit my bike
If you go to 15" shocks on your bike you need to convert to chain and also get a chain slider so it does not hit the swingarm. I would suggest checking out www.trackerdie.com for everything you would need for the conversion. -Zack
With the stock height, it's definitely an issue, but we're sticking with the longer shocks, so you have to lean the bike over farther to touch the exhaust. Lemmy likes to lean it pretty far, so he can still scrape the exhaust with really aggressive turning. -DrewZilla
As long as you can confirm that the steering neck diameter matches between your frame and the wide glide front end, then you can do the swap. -DrewZilla
I just cannot understand why HD gimps your US Sportsters with the low shocks. My HDI spec 2016 (UK) model Iron came standard with the 13.5 inch stock Showas, and they are actually really good, much better than I expected... I have only scraped the pegs once, and that was on a mini roundabout... Come on Harley, I'm sure your home market customers love corners too
Only if you're making an extreme change in shock length...like putting really tall shocks on. Just measure the play and make any small adjustments if necessary. -DrewZilla
RevZilla is the BEST motorcycle channel on UA-cam. Also criminally underrated. You're a real hero Lemmy
these videos keep me alive till im 20 and finally able to drive my own Harley sportster.
keep it up!!
cheers from holland

Thanks for throwing in the Burly Stiletto shocks. I had a shop guy tell me they were complete garbage and I should go Progressive instead. This shows it's more about what you want out of your ride, not the brand. Definitely know what shocks I'm getting! Awesome video guys!!

Lemmy....great review. Thank u for including our Licks Gutter Punks in your review.
Thanks Lemmy. Again to repeat what most say here, you are the man.
This realy helped me with the thoughts ive had about slamming my rear suspension.
I'm raising mine now after shredding the rear tail light wiring harness from tire being to close to fender. I went with 13.5in progressive 412s
I've had my eyes set on this bike since 2016 once I get back from Afghanistan I'm definately picking this up thank you for giving me/us some options to set on the 883
Drew, Lemmy, I love these! Keep them coming. So informative. Thank you!
I so eagerly wait these episode every week. Keep up the good work team Zilla!
I found that Progressive fork cartridge kit worked wonders for my 2014!
diggin the series man! i like how lemmy explains his shit. cheers from Chile!

Dont forget to set your sag on the rear suspension 👍😎 very important to getting your suspension working pre mo
Just ordered a set of the Ohlins. Cant wait to test them out.
Just bought a used 883 superlow and it came with Burly 10 inch shocks and I love the shocks but sadly I can't get over speed bumps very easy. Keep that in mind when you buy shocks.
Enjoying this build. Had considered an Iron, I am about your size. Leaning towards a different bike now, but this is still good work.
I like the look of the original shocks more then that two into one setup.
Love these videos guys! Keep it up! Gonna be following your guys' lead to customize my own iron too
Another awesome video Lemmy and team. Every episode I have to re-evaluate my savings account to see what to get first...
Do you guys post overseas? I'd rather spend a few quid more to get a product from a good source who make things like this than locally.

Lemmy, you are a god. I would give might right arm for this bike!

Lemmy, awesome video; very informative and fun to watch! I have to say you are the reason I'm slowly picking up wrenching, thank you!
Lemmy is the best, love that guy.
The front also bottoms out for me. Please post a video on progressive fork springs install
The ride height has always been my biggest complaint, I scrap my exhaust and kickstand all the time. They should have added about an inch and a half to the shocks.
This was great. Thanks . Keep them coming.
Great going , eagerly waiting for the next one
With the increase is ground clearance would that help any bike in terms of light offroading? Kinda like say a scrambler ish style bike
Yes, the increase in ground clearance could help in very light off-roading like gravel or dirt roads. -DrewZilla
I got the screaming eagle suspension for my superlow Harley 2012. Im still now show how to adjust the suspension settings..? like a video on how to determine the best setting for these overly complicated suspensions.

so am i, wasnt this video already put up like a week ago?
that was the "how to install"-video
Will you guys PLEASE make a video series like this for the Bolt 950?! I feel both bikes are highly customizable and both have a huge fan base

Very professional. Thanks for your posts !

Yes, they're a decent, affordable option for raising your Sportster up, and they work better than the stock shocks. -DrewZilla

I didn't think the 15inch Stilettos fitted a 2016 iron? Any chance you could do a video on the adjustments required or direct me to one? Read the Burly instruction manual and don't feel too confident attempting it without better direction
The 15 inch Stilettos do not fit the 2016 Iron. Only the 13 inch Stilettos fit. -DrewZilla
RevZilla but in the video there are 15inch Stilettos on a 2016 iron?!
-DrewZilla
Man u spend ur time in making such tough videos and u get so few likes and views
As I once said i am not a harley lover but Lemmy makes the best videos at revzilla
I feel like Lemmy makes the best motorcycle videos period! He seems like such an amazing guy.
I have a sporty 883, for the 970s, I'm 240lbs 5'10. What height should I get the 970s and how many threads down should I go? Plan on having my wife in the back , how would I go about adjusting it from there?
love your videos man keep it up
For the 15 inch burly, did you have to make any adjustment to exhaust or drive belt etc to accommodate the increase in height? Looked at Burly website and the said this may be required.
Yes, the drive belt needs to be adjusted when going shorter or taller than stock. As for the exhaust, it shouldn't really be affected by the drive belt. -DrewZilla
If you were to back the preload and dampening off on the 970 progressives, would they be super plush or still quite firm?
Maybe not super plush but still decently plush. -DrewZilla
Thanks Lemmy superb just the review I was looking for as my UK spec iron 2015 shock are rubbish, one set you missed was Ohlins but that aside I agree the progressive look ace. It is real shame that Revzilla don't have a Great Britain out let please!!!!????!!!😎
What about swapping the rear suspension with the shocks that came on the roadsters?
Yes, you could fit the Roadster shocks. -DrewZilla
These are awesome videos
I love these videos PLEASE! keep them going!
What do you mean when you say you "have 10 threads worth of preload showing" and "a couple clicks up in the preload"?
-DrewZilla

Thanks for the help Lemmy / Revzilla.
-DrewZilla
What size are those progressive 970s? 13.5 or 12.5?
What about the motor isolators
-DrewZilla

hi, i have a 2016 48 that i want to lower the back end to 10 inch or 10.5. Is there a shock i can use and still have a passenger without having to go with air suspension?
Take a look at the Burly Slammers. -DrewZilla
*www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/burly-slammer-shocks-for-harley-sportster-2004-2015
so those will be fine for 2 up riding? no fender rubbing on the rear tyre?
You might get some fender rubbing, but limiting suspension travel can do that. You can crank up the preload for 2-up riding to give yourself the best chance of avoiding the rubbing though. -DrewZilla
Will a 12" shock make a big difference in ride height and comfort on my 2012 iron? I don't want to go too tall and ruin the lines of my bike.
A 12" shock would be a good length. It won't ruin the lines. Progressive 444 and 970 shocks would be my recommendations for better and best ride quality. -DrewZilla (www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/progressive-444-series-shocks-for-harley-sportster-1986-2015) (www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/progressive-970-series-piggyback-shocks-for-harley-sportster-2004-2015)
+RevZilla I have the 12" 444 on my wishlist. Thanks for the advice drew. 👍
when installing taller shocks like that, is it necessary to adjust belt tension?
Yes, you will likely need to adjust belt tension when going to taller or shorter shocks. -DrewZilla
You're a beard machine man!
Will the Burly 15's fit a 2011 Nightster ?
The 15" Stilettos may require some customization to allow them to fit a 2011 Nightster. Burly only recommends the 13" Stilettos as a direct bolt-on for the Nightster. -DrewZilla

-Zack
@@RevZilla thanks for the reply I'll definitely check out the site, do yall have a video about the conversion?
We do not because TBH it's not that popular a way to go. You may find some videos from the gang over at Trackerdie, though!
-Zack
Thanks revzilla!
Hi what model vanes and hines fp3 feul pack do I need for my 2018 1200 roadster
awesome series
EP 4 for the pillion riders.....Wao!
Is the turning clearance on that tbr exhaust as bad as they say?
With the stock height, it's definitely an issue, but we're sticking with the longer shocks, so you have to lean the bike over farther to touch the exhaust. Lemmy likes to lean it pretty far, so he can still scrape the exhaust with really aggressive turning. -DrewZilla
I HAVE A 1996 SPORTSTER XLH AND I"M WANTING TO PUT A WIDE GLIDE FRONT END ON IT AND I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHAT YOU WOULD RECOMEND
As long as you can confirm that the steering neck diameter matches between your frame and the wide glide front end, then you can do the swap. -DrewZilla
What size progressives? 12" or 13" Thank you. Great Video.
They're 13" in length. -DrewZilla (www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/progressive-970-series-piggyback-shocks-for-harley-sportster-2004-2015)
When is the next review on Revzilla?
Episode 4 should be out in the next couple weeks, so stay tuned! -DrewZilla
When will you post the next episode?🤔
We just posted it over the weekend. If you haven't seen it, take a look! (ua-cam.com/video/_LrjHVOJIes/v-deo.html) -DrewZilla
This progressive 970 in 12" will fit on a HD48 if I have a detachable sissybar instaled with the hard ware kit?
Yes, though you may need to orient the shocks with the reservoirs at the bottom. -DrewZilla
Thanks!
Come on Harley, I'm sure your home market customers love corners too
Just wondering, do you change the belt tension as well? Tnx
Only if you're making an extreme change in shock length...like putting really tall shocks on. Just measure the play and make any small adjustments if necessary. -DrewZilla
RevZilla thank you!!! He he so from 13” to 11” no changes
