Those that are new to this have no idea what a gift you are providing. Where were you when I started by making molds from a sunfish in 1965 and fiberglassing the hull as my first boating project. When I worked at Boeing on the Minuteman program in the early 70's they didn't use fuses or circuit breaker between the power source and the drawer using the power. So when there was a problem with a small ceramic capacitor it would burn up the board in the drawer. It was easier to find the cause of the problem that way.
Sorry I'm two weeks late but I still had to comment and say thank you! Every episode helps me to become more knowledgeable and self reliant when it comes to my boat systems. This was a fantastic episode. I'm off to the next one :)

Another great video Clark - thank you!. FYI, Copper melts at 1085 Deg C, approx 50% higher temp than aluminium (660Deg C) ...and I am Aussie and that is how we spell (and pronounce) aluminium 🙂...I'll let the North Americans convert to Deg F.

Nice work filming smoking a wire! Overbuild is a mantra when it comes to, well, everything when weight isn't as big of a consideration as is safety. Marine applications outside of perhaps drag boats on a lake rate overbuild. Go off on all of that sir, thumbs up and waiting on the next installment. This is useful for everyone especially me so I don't have to teach them too (I can just point them to Emily & Clark, and I do)!

Nice one Clark it makes me think back to all those learning curves on my first boat build from crazy dream to splash. All those late nights in that old shed 2 doors down from the local pub , the rum fueled wisdom of the world from countless faces pocking through those broken windows after closing time every Friday nights. Yes every trade imaginable and then some in a small country town 160 miles from the coast .I just smiled and agreed with all as they past those bears through those broken windows every Friday night.

Most basic and useful series. I am on my third "old boat" and the wiring on all three has been the biggest challenge. Thanks so much Clark for clarifying basic principles, identifying proper componets and tools as well as real life examples. Wiring and plumbing ...a lot of similarities. :O)
Great video. Probably the most misunderstood thing concerning fuses. I don’t know how far your planning on going in this topic, this rabbit hole could easily consume 60+ videos. 1:59 - It has been proven that the bulk of electrons moving in the wire are at the surface where all the corrosion occurs, compounding the problem. If you have less surface area, there’s not as much material for the electrons to push each other around! 3:15 - Yes, there’s more surface corrosion possible; but, solid wire is more susceptible to vibration damage in this application. It is not nearly as flexible.

Never been a lover of fuses, I used to wire houses for a living and here in the UK all main boards are now MCB's and have been for decades. The trouble with fuses is that they are very good at blowing if you have a surge of current but in my experience run past their rating if the current is slowly increased. MCB'S are over current and thermal protection devices where fuses are just over current. I'm aware(I believe) that T class fuses have a time delay built in to allow for start up surges. I hopefully will be moving onto a boat soon and of course will use the appropriate fuses but have never been a fan. Great vid Clark, a lot was better than my college course.

A few names I respect their works and writings I see pulling a ~$200 subscription to knowledge that has been caused by the obfuscation on ACBY clairity and purpose. Thanks again for making the information available to all. Sure it will gain in traction over time as multiple mention is made in forum's and the like. Likely you will save lives, boats and definitely enable some boaters. I just got through reverse engineering/deciphering a Beta marine harness to universal equipment, not fun nor easy, 3 different schematics, physical verification not to mention 1mm and 2.5mm choices to make equivalent extension runs. This mess could have been on one sheet and was when I was done. No wonder most people are lost on electrical on boats. Last night friend rows in against the wind as the trifecta of problems was finished with proprietary outboard remote keyswitch failure, 14 tiny wires. Manufacturers hate 14GA minimums.

Battery box; I built a similar setup before I saw yours,also primarily for my electric dingy motor, but also multi-purpose. It has + & - large connectors on the outside for the dingy. Iinside, there is a 110V ac battery charger, an inverter, some USB connectors, and a 12 v plug. Since my current mooring is a kilometer from the dingy dock, being able to charge it on shore or in my car is helpfull especially if I need to make multiple runs in one day. There is a Selector Switch to choose the mode or off. To save time and Hassel, I used an off the shelf 54ah battery.

Yet another great vid. People really have no concept of what an electrical fire can mean - how shockingly hot and violent - and the immense clouds of thick smoke. Maybe they should be called electrical explosions instead. If you're not standing in the companionway you probably won't make it out. I didn't know about silicone wire - that looks like great stuff to work with. And you can bake a casserole in a silicone baking dish, so great heat insulation too. This series prompted me to get on your Patreon, which I should have done earlier, for all the great wisdom I've gotten. Also - I'd like to know your thoughts on dyneema rigging one of these days. It's the new hotness but I would be curious about your thoughts.
I think that when we use the terms Current instead of "Amperage", Power instead of "Wattage" and Resistance versus "Ohmage" shouldn't we be consistent and stick to Potential versus "Voltage"?
GREAT video Clark! I'm pretty knowledgeable of the physics of electricity. I'm REALLY looking forward to the information about how to apply the theory I know to applying it to a boat which I don't know. Those are going to be really super duper amazingly interesting.
On boats, are there reasons why one should not decrease resistance and increase capacity of a circuit by adding a second wire to the same circuit? In other words, can one use two 12 AWG wires in place of one 6 AWG wire if 12 AWG is what is available? Should one use the same size ground wire?
Yes you can use parallel wire. In the AWG system subtracting 3 doubles the area. So two 12s would be the same as a 9ga. A 6ga would be like 4 12ga wires. Yes the whole circuit has to be considered. (I'll be giving tips about the "Temptress" way to run grounds in a video eventually)
To be clear in my opinion and frequently safety or codes: separate or parallel load sharing runs increase efficiency but should be given protection amperage rating safe for the single. Part of safety ratings are how much heat can be transferred, bundling, conduits, insulation and hot engine rooms all de-rate safe capacity. Eg, pull a second parallel set of 10GA on 30Amp protection yes, pull double 10GA to run 60AMP no.

I believe that is only valid for extremely high voltage, like lightning

I only use breakers on my boat. Being able to switch the circuit and protect it with the same device is handy
Great teaching.. However we also use current limiters to indicate a problem with a device, not just to protect the wiring to it.

A few names I respect their works and writings I see pulling a ~$200 subscription to knowledge that has been caused by the obfuscation on ACBY clairity and purpose. Thanks again for making the information available to all. Sure it will gain in traction over time as multiple mention is made in forum's and the like. Likely you will save lives, boats and definitely enable some boaters.
I just got through reverse engineering/deciphering a Beta marine harness to universal equipment, not fun nor easy, 3 different schematics, physical verification not to mention 1mm and 2.5mm choices to make equivalent extension runs. This mess could have been on one sheet and was when I was done. No wonder most people are lost on electrical on boats.
Last night friend rows in against the wind as the trifecta of problems was finished with proprietary outboard remote keyswitch failure, 14 tiny wires. Manufacturers hate 14GA minimums.

We have had a few votes that way.
Battery box; I built a similar setup before I saw yours,also primarily for my electric dingy motor, but also multi-purpose. It has + & - large connectors on the outside for the dingy. Iinside, there is a 110V ac battery charger, an inverter, some USB connectors, and a 12 v plug. Since my current mooring is a kilometer from the dingy dock, being able to charge it on shore or in my car is helpfull especially if I need to make multiple runs in one day. There is a Selector Switch to choose the mode or off. To save time and Hassel, I used an off the shelf 54ah battery.

Yet another great vid. People really have no concept of what an electrical fire can mean - how shockingly hot and violent - and the immense clouds of thick smoke. Maybe they should be called electrical explosions instead. If you're not standing in the companionway you probably won't make it out. I didn't know about silicone wire - that looks like great stuff to work with. And you can bake a casserole in a silicone baking dish, so great heat insulation too. This series prompted me to get on your Patreon, which I should have done earlier, for all the great wisdom I've gotten. Also - I'd like to know your thoughts on dyneema rigging one of these days. It's the new hotness but I would be curious about your thoughts.

I think that when we use the terms Current instead of "Amperage", Power instead of "Wattage" and Resistance versus "Ohmage" shouldn't we be consistent and stick to Potential versus "Voltage"?

GREAT video Clark! I'm pretty knowledgeable of the physics of electricity. I'm REALLY looking forward to the information about how to apply the theory I know to applying it to a boat which I don't know. Those are going to be really super duper amazingly interesting.
On boats, are there reasons why one should not decrease resistance and increase capacity of a circuit by adding a second wire to the same circuit? In other words, can one use two 12 AWG wires in place of one 6 AWG wire if 12 AWG is what is available? Should one use the same size ground wire?
Yes you can use parallel wire. In the AWG system subtracting 3 doubles the area. So two 12s would be the same as a 9ga. A 6ga would be like 4 12ga wires.
Yes the whole circuit has to be considered. (I'll be giving tips about the "Temptress" way to run grounds in a video eventually)
To be clear in my opinion and frequently safety or codes: separate or parallel load sharing runs increase efficiency but should be given protection amperage rating safe for the single. Part of safety ratings are how much heat can be transferred, bundling, conduits, insulation and hot engine rooms all de-rate safe capacity. Eg, pull a second parallel set of 10GA on 30Amp protection yes, pull double 10GA to run 60AMP no.
