I’m also from the U.S., and am just flabbergasted that people just boldly March up and expect the guard and horse to stand “just so” for their photographs, with absolutely zero thought as to WHY the guards are there or WHAT their history is. These buffoons act like they are no different than any other souvenir and petting zoo all rolled into one.
I don’t mind the folks who ask first, stand without touching, and say a proper thank you, but all those hands and fingers poking at those poor horses is just horrific. I’ll bet making people stand in a proper que and charging £20 per photo/pet would thin out a bunch of that foolishness!!

Secondly, it's the Headquarters of the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment. Thus, because of the military importance, that's why there are Met Police officers present, just as there are along that stretch of Whitehall, protecting other vital Military, Government & Political related properties. It's a hugely protected part of London, a fact of everyday security in London.

One of the Big problems, where Safety is concerned, is that the very nature of tourists on holiday, is , they can be Distracted at any, or all of the time. Give tourist knowledge of the Routines here, and more Advice, and hopefully they may even be thankful, and therefore only too willing to co operate, if it means they are not likely to be knocked over by Soldiers or Horses. Also they would be more aware of horses behaviour, and be more gentle and less intrusive with Horses.

I don't think they mean to be disrespectful don't forget that people come from all over the world to see the kings guard and are not always aware of the do's and dont's - and I'm fairly sure if they wanted all that they would do it not because wendy on youtube suggested it sorry but 🤷‍♀ do you not think the guards know what to expect and how to deal with it? plus they do have the armed police just in case someone gets proper silly

It's so damned, bloody rude to stand in the way of the Guards, requiring the Guard to shout for you to make way.
