Christmas shopping at Toys R Us in 1991

- Christmas 1991 is just around the corner as you'll see in this video as we follow a little girl (and her shopping cart) around the store in December.
Lots and lots of some very cool toys and video games in this one from inside the Toys "R" Us store.
She's right about the SNES, that is what EVERY kid wanted!
This video last around 20 minutes.

I would do literally *ANYTHING* To be able to go back to 1991, to be back in Toys R Us, and just be with my Parents and Brother again, as a kid... just to go back in time and buy one more Ninja Turtle with them, and then go out to eat at R.J. Jones and eat a big, wonderful chicken fried steak on that wonderful Saturday morning.
my mom and dad are gone now, my brother is still with me, but just to have another Christmas with my entire family, i would literally sell my soul.
I believe you. It sounds like your mom and dad were absolutely awesome...you were so lucky, but you know that already.
That's a wonderful comment Glitch! Thanks 😀
Exactly
Sorry... 😳 I grew up in the same timeframe, TRU then go eat at the buffet, or hit the mall. Life was stars and fireworks.
If I could go back in time I would tell my younger self SAVE EVERY TOY AND GAMING SYSTEM
@@markfrost4785 30 plus years later still kicking my self in ass for getting rid of toys like HEMAN GRAY SKULL CASTLE PLAY SET, WWF, TMNT, POWER RANGERS, SUPER NINTENDO and etc
Who would ever think Toy R Us wouldn't be a thing anymore. Toys R Us and Saturday morning cartoons was a quintessential part of life for a kid in the early 90s.
They're trying to make a comeback Ryan. But your definitely spot on!
@@vampirerobot Well they already did online, and that's probably as far as they're going to go. At least I wouldn't waste my energy negotiating a physical business. 50 years from now, even the big box Costco and Walmart stores will eventually crumble up thanks to Amazon and the alike.
@@vampirerobot they did, many of them in California still. I want Circuit City and Radio Shack to come back, though
Growing up in Connecticut, all the good cartoons were on after school Mon-Fri. All the baby shit was on Saturday morning.
@@Curtoonstv Man, I miss Radio Shack and Circut City!
I miss that magical feeling of Christmas holidays like the 80s and 90s so much!
Even in the 2000s the malls were bustling during the holidays, and there were still movies worth seeing at the cinemaplex! Amazon and Netflix destroyed everything.
@@norwegianblue2017 things were so awesome back then we had everything but todays there is nothing here anymore

The 80s and early 90s were incredible.
No they weren't because thr video game Stage Fright Monster Singing Competition didn't exist yet and also Biggie from that game didn't exist yet.
The late 90's were good too.
Definitely better than today.
Include the whole 90's. Pokemon wasn't a thing until the late 90's heck I'd include the first half of the 2000s on the list too.
@@cloudboysmusic5223 Things seem to have taken a major downturn since around 08.
@@cloudboysmusic5223 I agree about the 90s though, wish the world was still like that. The machines in The Matrix were right. I was 11 in 1991, so about the same age as this girl I assume. Yes, a SNES is what I wanted (and got) that year.
Man I remember it was such a big deal just to be able to go inside a Toys-R-Us. Literally kid heaven.
Big time
Never had that opportunity in my hometown, our Toys R us wasn't built until the very late nineties by then I was a teen
I remember when we finally went to a city that had one. My brothers and I forced our parents to take us
Yea, it was a huge deal in those days.
In my family, we usually could go in, but rarely every get anything. I think only a handful of times did we ACTUALLY get something, and that was a Nintendo in like 1989 or 1990. And my father was fuming because of it.
Not that my and my siblings like a LOT of toys. But we were crazy about the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles action figures. But they used to tell us that they were expensive. But looking back, those things were like $5 or $6 a piece lol.
my favorite time of year was of course charisma's time and i loved going to pick out my halloween costume at Toys R Us
No one dressed in pajamas texting on their phone!! How different life was!?
Right! Society has really gone downhill.
yeah this generation is ruined
And not as many obese people as well.
And slippers
You all ruined this generation sadly 🐖
Betting nobody ever thought just how valuable this footage would be to the rest of the world over 30 years later. Such a great memory to see. I miss these days! Toys R Us was always a favorite place to go, even if I didn't buy anything.
it was history in the making.
Circuit city was a place people liked to go also wall mart wasn't a super center yet 😂 I remeber my parents talking about how different things were now at 36 I'm doing it 😂 my first game system was Super Nintendo right when it first came out ❤
This is weird because this is one of my recommendations but I never looked this up and told anyone but I have a good memory and when I was 5 in this year my mom and her friend and my sisters went to toys r us right before christmas without me or my dad we stayed home. I dont think my did felt left out but i did and i was wondering why i couldnt go. My mom wasnt always so nice to me and would spoil my sisters but i found out later she felt like her parents were doing that to her over her brothers and that was her way of getting revenge. 😐
This tape sat around and survived for *decades* before being immortalized on UA-cam.
Amazing.
This kid is more well spoken then most adults nowadays and did anyone notice the lack of pajama wearing slobs roaming the store
It's the first thing I always notice in these videos, you don't need to be in a suit and tie, but clean, decently kept clothing in public gave a feeling of self respect, which was contagious. To this day I won't go out in public without a collared shirt.
I got that vibe from her as well. She seems really mature.
i yearn for the days when people wore a suit and tie with a nice top hat to toys r us.
pajamas, baggy jeans and sweatshirts, blue hair, dirty shoes.. all bad these days
You got that right
One thing I notice about old videos before cellphones is how much more calmer people seem.. more happier, friendlier…
No "smartphones" (cell phones were fine), no social media (that includes UA-cam). I think we should give that all away and go back to the way things were. Are you game?
@LCCreole I totally agree 👍🏻 but there's no going back unfortunately
Yes, however, that intercom was off to the beeping races. So much communication over the speaker system.
@@LCCreole I honestly think that social media platforms have been instrumental in the destruction of our lives. Twitter, Farcebook, and especially 4chan are responsible for so many kids being bullied into the corner. People getting accused of something that isn't close to being true, yet these platforms allow it and people's lives get ruined. Things that had the potential to be helpful and fun are now ways for predators to hunt, stalk, or for Social Justice Warriors to do their public lynchings. What these people don't seem to understand is that when you accuse someone of a certain type of crime, it has the potential to snowball and do serious damage, and even if and when this person is exonerated or usually not or wasn't guilty of anything, they are now labeled for life. Jobs can be lost, families destroyed, marriages ruined, evictions, and sadly even worse they can be harmed physically. So many people have had to suffer through things like this, and unless it will fit into the media's agenda or political agendas it gets pushed or buried. Technology has it's great points but it also has many many bad aspects as well, but nowadays people CAN'T live for one hour without their smartphone or their tablets. Checking Farcebook while their driving, or even on the toilet? It's gone from bad to worse to ridiculous to pathetic. Now the above issues I've mentioned aren't in the majority, not by any means, however the fact that things like this can and do take place is still disturbing and potentially dangerous. We need to get back to when we weren't tethered to our smartphones. We don't need to have a phone going 24/7 ALL THE TIME! Back when you had to ☎️📞call📞☎️ someone from your 🏡home🏡 to their 🏠home🏠, or GASP, actually go to their house and KNOCK ON THEIR 🚪DOOR🚪? EEEK! NOOoooooooo! Must have📱🤳smartphones🤳📱, must have 💻tablets💻💻laptops💻! Good grief, it's just ridiculous that we've become people who need a "security blanket" aka our smartphones in order to survive. That is sad!
@@LCCreoleGranted, complaining about smartphones and tablets while using a tablet is a bit hypocritical, I'll admit that. However I don't own a smartphone. I have a standard flip phone for 📞calls📞, and texts if necessary. I only use my tablet daily, for checking my email, and medical information, and I occasionally use it for fun, games, and videos. If it went away would I freak out? Maybe a little, but it wouldn't be the be-all end-all of existence. People would be far more relaxed, happier, and probably a lot calmer too. Just saying.
Mom and Dad raised her right and you can tell she's smart in the way she talks and decides and her whole thought process
A lot of people were polite back then. Nowadays it’s a rarity.
There was a warmth among people back then. There existed a calmness and patience in people. Such a huge difference in a relatively small amount of time. It's really something.
Mass immigration and divisive media is killing culture.

you can tell that girl really wants the stuffed animals and dolls for herself but is too proud to admit it.

Oh my god the employee pa ringer never stopped in that Toys R Us! What a mad house!
🤣🤣🤣
im 4 minutes in and already counted 25 overhead pages made .. 😮😮😮
I guess they did not dial phone numbers or use walkie talkies. Why would Toys R Us run their stores like that? When I worked at Target I would turn my light to flashing on the register and a Team Lead would just come over. At Meijer, they dial phone numbers. No need to page overhead as a cashier LMAO.
This was common in retail stores before the year 2000 or so. Once they got walkie talkies and cell phones, the PA system was utilized much less often.
Plus I'm sure there were a ton of people shopping for Christmas, which was apparently "right around the corner"
I was about this kids age when this was filmed. It’s something I can’t explain to the youth today how special of a time the late 80s, and 90s were. It almost feels like a parallel universe when I look back on those times now. Everything was so much brighter, vibrant, happy and fully present. Today, I look around I can almost feel the collective overwhelming feeling of dread, anger, frustration, strife and conflict that people are going through in this generation. No one talks to one another anymore. Everyone’s faces are stuck in the phone, and constant online wars in the comments. social media, what was supposed to be designed to bring us together , has ripped us apart. That wonder for the world that we all once felt during the 90s has slowly dimmed. The internet had ruined us as a nation. The addictive qualities that social media has, with constant short videos you can’t help but keep scrolling and online gaming, it burns out the feel good sense of our brain, so when we go out and the real world, to explore, or play outside, talk to friends, nothing could compete with the fast past, anything at your finger tip feeling from the internet. It’s really sad. I’d give anything to go back to these times. I really would. I truly hope there will be an awakening and come back to this, but unfortunately I believe it’s only gonna get worse with more and more technology being created.
Yes
I am an 80s kid. The entire 80s was on such another level. That was the most special era, and nothing, not even the 90's, can compare. I think that is why so many people relate to Stranger Things. The 80s was the best. I feel sorry for the kids today; they will never know how it felt to be an 80s kid. They will never know what REAL music is either. Poor things!😥
I wish I could go back to the '80s as well, but technology is billions of times better now. If I could take my technology with me, then I'd be good to go. Both the '80s and now have their pros and cons. However, I wouldn't give up my MacBook Pro for anything, lol😂. The internet and new tech are how we thrive. I don't use it for toxic reasons; I use it to make money online and for other great things. Unfortunately, most people use it for the wrong reasons. So basically, it's according to how we use it.
amen
you say the internet has ruined us, but it also helped everyone save tons of money when stores like Toys R Us rips people off- you could always find an online store that sells for cheaper. the internet also provides free education on a galactic scale, and gives you instant info that you need, in sometimes dire situations.
Damn. She was very knowledgeable about all the toys you'd think she worked there 😂 I miss being a kid at Toy's R Us
Absolutely, walking around, buying something that will make you happy leaving the store.
Oh look. Well behaved people. I miss the 90s. ❤️
There's something about the people that seems different back then. Like they're an entirely different type of people with perhaps a different and nicer (at least to us) culture.
I wouldn't dare suggest that to be actually true though because enjoying my culture is evil.
People were civilized back then. We were just chilling. Times were good and people were doing their own thing.
@@anonamatron It's because the Marxist ideology was excluded to certain college campuses and haven't yet spread like wildfire like it did in the 2010's...

I was 8 years old in 91'. This footage is priceless. Brings back feelings that can't be replaced.
I hear you. The tremendous excitement of going into toys r us knowing you could buy a game was unmatched. I wish I could recapture that feeling as an adult
was I believe 14 was a great time to be a kid.
I was 4 🤣💀🤣
I was 5 years old and thats when my dad bought a super nintendo. It was the best day of my life.
I was 12 in 91. When I would come home from work as a travel consultant my daughter and I would go because I collect GI Joe's 25th anniversary figures. My daughter was born in 2003 and we went every weekend right up and until they closed the doors. She would look at all the monster high dolls. Sad part is my boy will never get to experience this.😢
And nobody is saying "hey! I didn't give you permission to film me!! I'm going to sue you!!" But seriously, 80s and 90s was pure magic.
The lady at @16:40 pretty much said it with her expression 😒 watch it in slow mode and you’ll see 🤣
Before social media there wasn't much reason to care if you ended up on someone's recording. Also, the weird looks people gave would mostly be because how uncommon it was to see someone walking around with a giant camera on their shoulder 😅
Back then nobody had cameras. If anything they were probably like WOAH COOL A CAMCORDER. Those things were pretty huge back then. Also you shouldn't be filming people anyway lol unless you're doing something like a documentary like this is kinda. Back then people WANTED to be filmed because cameras were special and barely anyone had them
it's cause people abused it in todays time and pranks and go to far which either intrude or hurt people who just want to shop and go about their lives and due to that it makes people say "I didn't give you permission to film me" and "im going to sue you"... that's why the public who see people who film in the 80s and 90s are more ok with it cause it wasn't for attention, disturbing others, and so forth... but to look back and document their lives in a professional way and do it respectfully.
I used to get excited when in the rare case saw people film. I wanted to be on camera because I knew it was something special.
This little girl seemed super smart for her age (10?). I wonder where she is now. It would be cool to see her react to this video as an adult.
"The new systems are like really popular on the market" "Maybe they were popular last year but they're not so popular this year because everybody's bought them and they're getting bored of them." She speaks with such maturity... I don't think I mentioned anything about "the market" until I was least 25 lol.
Shes an old woman now, mid 40s. Probably has older children herself now.
if i was asked to do a reaction video when i'm 40 for some rand video where i was 10 year olds, i'd have no remembrance at all. i mean obviously just the store and colors, but that's it lol
@ChocolateCoveredGummyBears you will remember the store in vivid memories, maybe nor that exact video. I'm 45 and I remember my 10 year old self.
@@MastermindElizabeth yeah but why would you care to see someone's reaction to themselves at a store when their 10? there's nothing to react to lmao
Any 80s or 90s baby could tell you that we never would have thought the world would be as messed up and confusing as it is today. Its kind of scary to think that our generation is the final generation to experience a world without social media. From here on, every generation will suffer the mental consequences of the medium.
Yep.
Preach. Spot on.
We never expected a lot we loved to either not exist or close.
The fact that the little girl had absolutely no problem about hanging out with a random guy holding a camera, and when you film people they say "Hi" instead of "stop filming me or I'll sue you" , the fact that she (along with everyone else) is so calm, polite, well dressed, and well spoken, AND THE FACT THAT TOYS R US EXISTED IN AMERICA AND WAS IN BUSINESS just shows how great society used to be.
I assumed the guy filming her with her dad.
Exactly my thoughts, people now only think the worst and def will have issues filming them.
I don't think he's a stranger to her. There's plenty of stranger danger in that time.
Assuming you are correct that this was just some random dude filming a little girl at Toys R US, I wouldn't really consider that a positive that people just let it happen. Lol
Although, this was clearly b roll for some local news footage.
That still exists today, but it's now heterophobia instead.@@NES96

The early 90`s was ruff, but I do miss it
I was an young adult in the 90s, and certainly remember it as a much better time than now. There was more freedom, and in general people were less stressed and more positive towards the present and the future. Things quickly went downhill after 2001 with the 9/11 event and economic instabilities that followed.
the 90s were the best by far imo
it would be great if someone could re-open a 1991 toysrus as a museum. simply just walking through it once more would be a nice experience.
It's actually insane to see how stocked the shelves are were during those days. I know this is during Christmas but I always remember the shelves being completely full no matter what time of year, even overflowing and stacked on the floor sometimes.
Incredible audio-visual time capsule. And as others have stated, the girl featured is obviously extremely bright and well-spoken for her age.
This video made me feel a bit sad, I remember just how big and magical toys r us felt as kid . It was one of the most exciting places to go as a kid .
Such a simple video brought tears to my eyes because this video shows the time that has passed. This store made so many of the great memories in my life. I remember being in elementary school and the countdown until Christmas. As a kid you knew it was getting close when we started having Christmas concerts in elementary school and the last day before Christmas break was the day we all looked forward to as a kid. Christmas day was all day non stop playing with new toys wwf action figures, micro machines, electric train sets, electric race tracks, terminator action figures. I remember getting Geoffrey dollars here and there and couldn't wait to take that trip to go spend them. I'm 34 and to be honest all these toys i mentioned I still have in my mom's basement packed away. Man I miss being a kid.
6:49 "I can't make up my mind, there's so many good things here."
My sentiments exactly looking back to it all.
My dad used to spend $10K a year at Toys R Us in the early to mid 90s, to buy gifts and toys for poor and underprivileged kids in the Bronx and Brooklyn that would write to Santa for help
That was very nice of him 😊
Wow 😮 that’s so awesome to be able to do that and actually do it. How wonderful ❤
Dear 🎅 I don't live in the Bronx , but I'd like a Nes Classic to take back to the 90s , seriously good job on having a good heart to the under privileged children
We went to Home Depot here in Daytona a few doors away from where Toys R’ Us was. It was so depressing seeing it closed and, dark after so many years. Countless memories we had of gathering toys for the kids for Christmas. Now the kids are grown up and the store is gone, very melancholy I must admit. It’s sad things have to change, but in my heart I’m always a ‘Toys R’ Us kid..
Thank you for this perspective. As a father whose kids are still kids, I'm dreading this feeling of them being grown. I also miss Toys R Us, and cherish the memories of going there with my mom and brother. Not so much the memories of working there in high school, which was miserable 😅

That's the one we would go to as well. I grew up in Port Orange in the 90's. I live in Dubai now, we have Toys R Us here, but somehow just doesn't seem the same, but they do have some pretty great toys here. Albeit a bit expensive compared to the US.

That Barbie aisle is amazing! Online shopping will never give the same glee as seeing stuff in front of your face! Glad I got to experience the magic of TRU
This reminds me of what life was like when I was a kid. No one here is on their phones. Everyone is practicing situational awareness and being courteous of each other's personal space. I see people from diverse backgrounds smiling and coexisting. People are confused and feel their personal space has been invaded by the intrusion of them filming. Parents are parenting their kids, and they are by their sides, teaching and actively engaging with them. Wow!
Incredible nostalgia. This was my favorite era of Toys R Us. Thank you for posting.
😊
Same. This was the year The Incredible Crash Dummies action figures hit shelves. I can still literally picture the setup at the end of the aisle at my local TrU when they were brand new. This was the absolute best era of LEGO and Nintendo/Sega.....Can't believe that was 32 years ago...
I got the SNES in Christmas 1991 and I was so impressed by it. It blew me away even more than the NES in 1988 when I got it (that was my first console system). I would love to go back in time to the early '90s when the world was more innocent and times just seemed simpler.
Same got mine with street fighter 2.
Same. Nes in 1987 then genesis in 1991 and super nes early in 1992. Remember it like it was yesterday. I still have some old game manuals from the 1980s like tmnt one for nes
Got mine in 92 the Super Mario World bundle
I remember playing the demo of SMW at BJ's in 1992 but my parents wouldn't buy it and we were stuck with the original NES and just two games (Milon's Secret Castle and Tecmo Bowl, which I never touched because I've never been into sports). My mom said it was expensive.
Now I have a top-tier gaming desktop running Windows 11 with about 240 SNES games emulated on it.
I got SNES that Christmas in ‘91. SMW was overrated and not very good, but I had a blast with everything else being released for it, especially when I got SMK for my 10th Birthday in 1992.
I ended up getting a Genesis in 1993 mainly for Sonic 2 and Mortal Kombat. Still had the SNES.
Toys R Us at it's peak! My parents would let me and my brother wander the store alone, we could spend all day in there and not buy a thing, just looking at all the stuff we'd want to get...
I was born in 1980 and feel very blessed to have grown up in the 80s and 90s with the best cartoons and toys of all time.
Video footage like this is truly amazing. In Christmas of 1991, I was a high school kid working my second Season at Toys "R" Us and I had just switched to Big Ticket...so I got to stock all of the awesome video games and systems of the time. It's pretty hard to top that era of gaming in terms of retail excitement. Watching this definitely takes me back to my old store (6043) and all of the great times I had there. Thanks for posting this video!
Thanks for sharing 😊
I was a teen working there too in the early 90’s. Was a great time.
The holy grail of electronics: the back room full of all the software and hardware.
Yeah I was a high school kid too, and I was so upset in 1991 that the Super Nintendo was so expensive compared to the regular Nintendo. Back in 1985, 1986, Nintendo offered the high priced version with the little robot, two games and light gun. Then they offered several cheaper options, just the gun, or sometimes even the just the console and the Mario game. This how I got my parents to get me the NES. By 1991, they only offered the expensive $200 version, and when I would ask for the SNES my parents would roll their eyes at me and say "You're 16 now kid, get a part time job and buy you're own Super Nintendo!". So I got that part time job, but found myself spending my money on other things, and eventually switched over to Sega anyways. Damn I really wanted that Super Nintendo at age 16 n 1991, mainly because of childhood connections to the original. I eventually went back to Nintendo with the 64.
Like a Vietnam veteran, "...at Hill 6043!" Walter in 'Big Lebowski' haha 😂
My family thinks I'm weird watching these old videos... It's literally a time machine to the past, somewhat simpler times.. Back when we thought the graphics could never get better than an SNES
Just look to the future, unlike back then in 2023 you can enjoy things like Stage Fright Monster Singing Competition
it is weird but i love it!
I thought they'd get better, I just didn't know that it would be the end of my deep love of gaming for a long time.
@Valentino Well, this guy's family seems to.
Should they? Probably not.
@Valentino I think they should say "who cares, you fucking fuck? I'm going to jam wooden skewers up your pee hole if you question my UA-cam habits ever again!!"
I'm glad this sweet, young (technically older than me, but at the time-) girl seemed to have a nice childhood, but you can tell someone had really conditioned her to believe she was "too old" for many of the dolls she _clearly_ wanted.
Yeah, that was the sad part. No one is ever too old for fun items. It's all programming.
I wish these days would come back 😭😭😭
My Mom used to take me to Toys R Us every weekend as a kid. I didn’t always get to buy something, but I always appreciated her taking me to at least look around. It was great to be a kid in the nineties!
I forgot that Barbie used to be an entire aisle. They didn't really have a lot of girl specific toys back then so Barbie and Cabbage patch were huge.
Girls had a lot more than that- easy bake oven, my little pony, strawberry short cake, Carebears, tons of doll brands... we had it pretty good.
It’s amazing how shopping carts have not changed in 40 years lol.
Yeah, insane. Same with floors walls and the roof too.
They have though. Have you been to Kohl's lately? They have a device on them now that will lock the wheels if you try to leave the building
@@StevieD1x Briick and mortar stores have a hard time getting people to enter the store, might as well try to keep them trapped! :)

@@EvilGamerDude Yeah probs more like 32-33 years ago.
I would do literally anything to go back to those days. Toys R Us was truly magical beyond words in that era. I was 4 in 1991 and I vividly remember the excitement of entering the store with my mom and browsing the aisles that were fully stocked with every toy a kid could ever dream of. The 80s and 90s (early 90s in particular) were truly such a wonderful time to be a kid, and just to be alive in general. There was a simplicity and a specialness to everyday life that we just don’t have now. People had manners and courtesy and were just so much better behaved back then. These videos that capture day to day life during such a special time period are treasures. Thank you so much for posting all of these! ❤
What a smart kid. Hope she went on to have great success.
I agree and I wonder if she got the Super Nintendo for Christmas that year?
this younglady passed away in early 2014
@@bakcort Proof?
@@bakcorthow do you know? Are you family?
@curiouscat428 No, he posted it on his Twitter account back in early June
As a 34 year old guy, I had the fortune of taking trips with my parents to Toy's R Us for birthdays or Christmas. They even used to send out the flyer in the Sunday paper that you could mark for a wish list. Lots of great times. I understand why people want to go back to those days. Society certainly wasn't as unhinged as it is now. It seems like there was a lot more societal trust between people in. More polite, more kind and even more selfless. I don't think it all can be blamed on computers and phones but I do believe something has died in the American soul over the last 10 to 15 years and I'm afraid we won't get it back anytime soon. Anyhow, that's my soapbox rant lol.
There's too much anxiety and not enough breathing.
People just need to calm down..take a breath or two.
The word soapbox sure is coming up a lot
People have been pinned up too long, now the repercussions. The media did not help with its constant oppression. Unsurety is bad enough without panic..
Its moving into virtual reality. Your position in the real world means nothing anymore. With that in mind going out to the world to be around alot of humans and have interaction is gone. Back then it took more time to get a good or service so being selfless in society was the path of least resistance. When the virtual world prides its self on being INSTANT people expect that in the real world. That is whats been going on since 2005+
@@shaiapouf420 Your having an ounce of intellect means nothing in this world. Who the hell do you think you are? Spock? Path of least resistance! Oh murder! I remember as a young boy i was always like “Get me out of this pink aisle!!!!!” when i was with my sisters. Just get me to those GI Joe’s and RC cars !!!
What a sweet girl. She still liked dolls.
And that man trying to tell her she’s to old for that!! I hate when grown ups (especially men) tell little girls they are “too old” to play with dolls!! She’s still a child, so let her be!! I’d rather her play with dolls then boys!! Ugh 🤬
@@godshallsmiteyouu Amen to that! Your only a kid but for a short time. Why make it any shorter. You could tell she really liked some of those toys she was dismissing as too young for her.
Not the chucky dolls
most kids were innocent back then because they weren't free roaming the internet
@@godshallsmiteyouu So true! People used to tell me I was too old to still watch cartoons when I was 15, and now I am an adult and I actually am an animator, my childhood dream. Age is only an illusion.
Xmas 1991, I was 14 years old. I got an SNES with Final Fantasy II. Me and a friend played that game for our entire winter school break. Probably the most nostalgic 2 week gaming session ever. I would have been one of the ones clogging up the gaming isle lol
Great video.. I really like the girls commentary she seemed really knowledgeable about the products of her time. Thanks for sharing this video toys R us was a magical place in the early 90s
I miss it.. the smell of the mall at Christmas.. the music playing in the background.. being able to actually be present in the moment and actually feel the excitement of spending the holidays off from school and with your family.
We forget that most kids were this well mannered, well spoken and intelligent in these times. It's depressing to see so many comments pointing out what should still be the norm.
As a person who was a kid then, LMAO, you didn't know any kids of the 1990s and 1980s.
Bullshyt. I grew up back then and your comment is b.s. kids were hell back then too
This is around the time I got my first retail job working at toys r us. Holidays were insane.
Christmas 1991 I had just turned 6 years old in November. This brings back so many wonderful memories of walking through Toys R Us with my mom and grandma. They were so kind to me and let me choose many toys in that store every year of my childhood around the times of my birthday and Christmas. I was so happy to get many Barbie dolls, and baby dolls, and video games.
Kids since will never know the joy that was Toys-r-us. Total immersive toy experience. Now it's all apps and online.
The video game portion is absolute gold. That display case had me drooling as a 10 year old back then. Great upload.
Ah such happy memories. Back in the early 1990s, my late father used to take us every November, to give us inspiration for our Christmas lists 😂
I look back so nostalgically at this time! I was 5 in 1991, I feel like people my age got to exist in the perfect eras. I am thankful I had a childhood when things were more simple and we played with toys and we were free from social media. We got the internet when I was 12, but not like it is now, and social media wasn't a thing until I got to college. I am also so thankful to live my adulthood with the technology we have now!
How times change ... Toys-R-Us was the place to be for kids ... and now it is gone ... at least I was able to enjoy it back then ...they had every toy you could have ever wanted !!!!
She’s so sweet! Just wanted to give her a big ole hug! Reminded me of when my girls were little. Miss those days!!!!
I feel the same way.🥰
No pushing, or people throwing stuff off the isles, no pranking people, no entitlements, everyone being respectful to one another..I miss those days..I was around 24 at the time..❤❤
No one complaining about a person with a big video camera.
The stuff you see online does not equal real life. The stores I go to people still act the same and respectful. Like the videos you see on social media etc is not how things are but it can be easy to believe that it is sometimes because the negative things always get the most attention and stick out to us
You were 24 in 91 damn that makes you like 80 😂
@nardcore661 yes and I look good for 80..🤪
You must be from Ohio.
This is so cool that he recorded this back in 1991 and posted it on UA-cam!
This young lady is now around 44 years old.
Seeing videos like this just shows first hand how far society has devolved over the last few decades. What I wouldn't give to be able to go back to those days!
But you would know what will comes, you couldn't stop it and i think this would broken you. It would broken me to go back and knows what sadness and horror comes to us all in future.
Virtual reality
Devolved in what sense?
Even the little girl seems smarter and more well spoken than most kids today. Seems like most young people today have some serous brain rot due to all the time spent online.
It's only because you're old now (as am I). Today's kids will look back on today with the same nostalgia.
This is a timewarp back to when Toys R Us was great. I remember playing all the nintendo demos and reading the gamepros and writing down cheat codes. It was a simpler time before the internet, before amazon, before netflix or spotify. We'd often hit up blockbuster on the way home and pick up a vhs copy of a movie like Batman, Aladdin or Encino man and a box of microwave popcorn. This was before 9/11, before Columbine, before all the hate and division across this country. It's easy to think that all the good times are behind us, but don't forget that things are a lot better in a lot of different ways now. The truth is, things have always been messed up. They were before, and they will be after. Humans are messy, skittish creatures, prone to irrational thinking and violence. Somehow, we always find a way through and we haven't blown ourselves up yet. I trust we can get our act together and fix things. The planet, our broken bonds, our love for each other. There's really no choice if we want a future for ourselves and our kids.
It’s hard to believe a toy store of this size and caliber is gone. It was a child’s (and grownup’s) dream come true! And, the fact they were all over the country. I know they are trying to make a comeback, but their attempt doesn’t compare to what they originally were. It’s somewhat comparable to Tower Records, which was a huge chain of record stores in the US and abroad. They are long gone as well (except there are like 29 still in business in Japan).
Thank the internet and online shopping. It killed these in person shopping experiences at big box stores
I went to toys r us constantly as a kid in the early 2000s and the stores looked nothing like they do in this video. All the aisles barely had any product on them and were nowhere near as tall

bro i was 11 years old when this was filmed. Toys r us was amazing as a kid. great video with great memories to reminisce.... thank you!
Oh man, such a flashback to a much better time! I was just 11/12 years old in 1991, and would give anything to go back to that year, and still have all of my Family alive. I can still remember all the trips I took to Toys R Us with my Grandma and Grandpa back then...awesome times, but really makes me sad now, though, when I think about it. My Grandpa passed back in 1999, and my Grandma, sadly, passed back in 2020...that one was especially hard because she passed right when I got Covid pretty badly, and was quarantined, so I was unable to even attend the wake, or the funeral. Even that particular Toys R Us, long ago, closed up, and just have the memories of it now. I'm always happy to see these videos that someone, so smartly, recorded back in the 1980s, and 1990s, because they are all great time capsules that bring back so many great memories, and is a reminder of such a better time in the World.
Sorry to read about your Grandparents Mike. They were obviously great people. Glad the video brought you happiness.
@@vampirerobot That's okay, just a part of Life, unfortunately. Thank you for the great memories though! 🙂 Take care of yourself, and stay safe out there. 🙋
The prices on these toys seemed really expensive for 1991. Wow!
Prices on stuff like toys, games etc are about the same price as today
Some were probably made in USA
Toys were always pretty expensive I guess. Hence why a lot of parents tended to save up money all year to buy toys for Christmas. Especially when they had multiple kids to buy for.
It's a crime that there isn't more footage like this. I know cameras weren't everywhere like they are now days, but boy would it be great to have more time capsules like this to enjoy.
Two things i noticed almost immediately; how much calmer people were and how better organized, cleaner , better stocked stores were.
Wow! These videos are like walking into a time machine! Thank God for UA-cam! Toys R Us holds so many great childhood memories for me (like many others) When I was a kid, I would go to Toys R Us a lot with my best friend, Ryan. His mom was such a sweet lady. She used to buy us both toys, and treated me like her own son. I haven't seen Ryan or his mom in over 25 years. I sure hope they are both doing good. Thanks for sharing these amazing videos! They are truly a blessing 😊
You're welcome. Have you tried reaching out to him?
@@vampirerobot Yes, I have. I tried looking him up on social media many times, but couldn't find him. I even tried looking up his mom and brother, to no avail. Maybe they don't use social media or something, I don't know.
The little girl is adorable and the way her dad was interviewing her made me smile. I bet this is a great memory for them.

This guy is a creep! 😂
Toys R Us was a part of my childhood in the late 90s-early 00s. Never again will we see a Target-sized store dedicated to toys. I think this video really captures the store in its heyday, by the time I was old enough to remember they were selling baby stuff and electronics to stay afloat.
By baby stuff are you referring to Babies R US?
@@572checo21 There was Babies R US when I was a kid, but the back half of a Toys R US was always dedicated to baby stuff too. Its like they were grasping at straws to keep the brand alive long before they closed.
We had no idea back then that we were near the end of actual “window shopping” forever.
No shower caps with fur slides. What a great time!
Terrific footage. Someone said this could be news B-roll footage, and I think that makes sense. The dad sort of directed her to explain the most popular toys and delineate them.
This looks to be a focus/marketing group study.

Things were absolutely the best back then!
And this is adorable, listening to her give her professional opinion on all the toys that boys and girls played with during this time is truly special!😊
I’m almost 40 and sincerely miss the late 90’s early 2000’s. Before “smart phone”, before social media. We don’t realize how good we had it until we look back and see what life was like 30 years ago
I worked as a ticket writer at a Toys R Us in Houston at about this time. All the calls for “Ticket Writer” gave me flashbacks and made me want to quit all over again. I made $3,45/hour. I still have a huge scar on my forehead from having a 12” bike roll off a 6’ high shelf and hit me in the head.
Ticket writers took car of the large box items on display on the floor like bikes, baby furniture, power wheel vehicles, swing sets and baby car seats. You would get a ticket, take it up front to pay and then go to the back of the store to pick it up.
Most of the job was rounding up bikes and power wheel vehicles from all over the store.
They certainly loved going on the intercom at this store 😅 There’s barely a few seconds where someone isn’t yelling into the mic 🤡 I’d be tempted to bring in my own loudspeaker in the cart just to talk to people near me 🤣
She’s so cute and sweet! Seems way more mature in kids thinking back then.
I know right?😍🥰
As someone who just turned 40, I will never forget the joy and excitement, that I got from Toys R Us, when I was a kid.

I want to go back to the 90's and look at all the Hot Wheels, WWF, TMNT toys etc.

It would be cool if that girl could be found and was made aware of this video so she could offer her insight and perspective on it.
Yup. Six batteries maybe lasted you 4 hours? Had to have that AC adapter for sure.
Ahhhh, so much nostalgia and good childhood memories watching this! I had just turned 6 years old when this video was shot, and I still fondly remember that Christmas. I got my first gaming system that actually hooked up to the TV, the Sega Genesis, and a few games as well, although we already had an Atari and Game Boy that my older brother had got previously. Then I think it was the following Christmas in '92 that we got a Sega CD and Game Genie, which was pretty awesome at that time too. Of course it was Christmas '96 that really changed the game right after the N64 first came out -- playing Wave Race and Pilotwings, and eventually Goldeneye, Starfox, Zelda, etc.... The 90's gaming culture was pretty dope, but then again we also used to spend most of our time outside back then though -- skating, riding bikes, going to the neighborhood pool, jumping on trampolines, going to the mall, hitting up Blockbuster or Hastings, playing music in garage bands, etc.... Fortunately we didn't have cell phones or tablets as constant distractions, and the internet was still in its youth. There was no social media, and frankly I think we were better for it. The good ole days for sure!
Who misses that toys r us smell when you walked in. To children, it was like the gates of heaven opened up when you got to the automatic sliding doors.
Then you walked down the long hallway that went to the right. I used to get so excited. You know if your parents grabbed a kart, it was going to be a good day!
