There is brown culture though, I could explain how postcolonial structures have contributed to its consolidation and how one could argue for its existence due to its otherness in the face of white culture, but I don't have the time so just try to understand by this little message. Just saying: If he broke off the engagement she is legally not obliged on returning the ring. The engagement ring represents a verbal contract. Generally if the state has no-fault divorce then engagements are also no-fault which means it is a conditional gift (condition being actual marriage) and usually needs to be returned. Think the only state that has no conditions and the ring can be kept regardless is Montana. Women get themselves in trouble legally all the time over this because people keep repeating the fallacy that you get to keep the ring regardless. Contract law is not nearly as simplistic as you present - speaking as someone who has worked in contract law for over twenty-years.
