How to drill your own terracotta orchid pots!

- This week Plant Lovers I decided to make a stand alone video with my terracotta orchid pot drilling exercise as a few people had asked. It's remarkably easy to drill your own terracotta orchid pots with plenty of holes, it's messy but VERY satisfying! Obviously this is only of interest to you terracotta pot lovers! But you can also use the same drill bits on porcelain or other ceramics so my eyes are peeled.....! The orchids I mention in this video are:
Isochilus linearis
Possibly Oncidium Tiger Crow
I soak my pots in a bucket of water for at least 24 hours, found that the terracotta has absorbed the water so I don’t need to keep water running while drilling, still need to keep dipping the pot in into the bucket of water to wash off the slurry but easier than trying to juggle the hose, the drill and the pot.

found a nice terracotta garlic keeper pot and used this method to punch an extra hole in the bottom, new life as an orchid pot.

Hello, I am a follower of yours from Mallorca, Balearic Islands in Spain. I love your channel. I use glass drill bits, which are like an arrowhead, in different sizes, and there are very small ones that are used to make the holes to hang the pot. Too bad I can't show photos here. If you put the pot wet the night before, it will be better for you, in addition to putting it in a bucket and turning on the tap water just enough to cool the bit. Greetings ❤

Great video, well presented and very informative. Also, I agree with you that while being somewhat impractical it is hard to resist the superior aesthetic of a terracotta pot. After all, an appreciation for aesthetics is largely why we developed a passion for growing orchids in the first place. Best wishes from a fellow Aussie orchid lover in Newcastle.

Hi Matthew from Melbourne!! I love your channel. Great to get information from someone actually growing orchids in similar conditions to myself. And as for terracotta pots - well I just love them - all shapes and sizes, aged and chipped. In fact I can't get enough of terracotta pots. Seems like quite a controversial subject tho amongst orchid growers!
I grow all my orchids in terracotta and pot them in fern wood which is a NZ product made from shredded punga. Seems like all my orchids really appreciate that as a growing medium. Anyway keep up the amazing videos! I love your upbeat chat and orchid care.

Lots of holes make the roots easier to "breath".

Love this video. Thank you Matthew. I might have to lug my bench round to my partner's place because he has an outside tap. The only way of keeping water flowing over a pot here would be to drill it in the sink... I can picture it now... Scraped pot, smashed sink, big bill. Oops! 🙄 I also love your Isochilus, so that's another added to my wish-list.

I too, prefer the look of terra cotta pots, especially aged ones, and i knew my only option couldn't possibly be the over-priced faux-aged ones at the chi-chi Boutique Nursery in the "exclusive" corner of the County... So glad to be given all these tips for the DIY-er!

If you want to age your terracotta, search terracotta and buttermilk or yogurt. You can also apply moss to your yogurt to glue and grow your moss on the pots. 💖🌞🌵😷

I only use plastic pot and try to reuse and recycle them as much as possible. If I ate yogurt or potato salat with clear plastic packaging, I even make hoes on them and use as pot for orchids. 😂 I grow orchids indoor and every of them will have their own planter for asthmatic, so plastic is more convenient.
But still watched the whole video and enjoyed 😊 haha

Had to come back and reply to your comment that the drill bit won’t hurt you. It will…if you’re stupid enough to drill right through with your hand in the way, I know I’ve got a hole in finger to prove it!

I do show you how to drill holes in terracotta pots.
about the only time I use terracotta anymore is as an outer pot to stabilize top heavy (read: Dendrobiums) orchids. I grew tired of damaging roots and/or breaking pots trying to get the orchids out. Then you have the additional problem of sterilizing the pot if you haven't had to break it and want to reuse it, which means putting it in the oven at 200 F (93 C) for an hour and there is the possibility it will crack. Too much work when you have a large collection, plastic is just a lot easier.
In the US (especially in Florida and California), terracotta with holes are easy enough to come by in a variety of sizes. There are also glazed ceramic orchid pots which are more decorative, not only because they are glazed but they can be decoratively carved as well. I really only recommend them as an outer pot, though, because the roots tend to grow in and out and it is a massacre when it is time to repot.

I've always loved the look of the air roots poking out of the holes in a terra cotta "holey" pot. When up-potting, if roots get torn off, it's just sort of part of it all. Because we sure are never gonna be able to re-thread them into the holes of the next pot!😅
Also, probably best to only re-pot in more dormant periods, to give time for regenerating roots prior to next flowering period. ♡

I was wondering if you ever deal with nasty bugs? I have a dendrobium nobile that spends the winter on a covered porch. This year it came inside and brought thrips with it. Do you treat them in some way to ensure there aren't any hitchhikers?
Oh no! That's bad luck! Not really - I give them a once over and if I can't see anything I bring it in. If in doubt use an organic oil spray pesticide.

I love terracotta like you but find it hard to source squat pots smaller than 11 & between 11 & 15.

No not really - there's a lot of different retailers around in Melbourne with a vast array of sizes.
Any tips on removing an orchid from a clay pot without damaging too many roots?😊
Try soaking the whole thing in water over night to soften the roots and then gently separate them from the pot. Good luck!

And the climate here in New Zealand in the manawatu is very much the same as Melbourne.
I'm admiring 😍 your orchid at 0:51 and notice that this shape of flower reminds of a garden plant named ...Statice ( Limonium sinuatum ) also know as sea - lavender and marsh - rosemary. Check it out 😊. It's wildly grown for cut flowers and for dried flower arrangements.
