Where, I want to learn and have fun, but also don't want to get in anyone's way. Having a very clear and concise guide on the roles in the game, is essential for this. There are few things in gaming more rewarding than commanding your way to a 5-0 victory after a 1.5 hour slugfest in this game. God it feels good.
When i was lvl 30 and very new i won a match playing commander. I took commander when we were losing 1-4 and i made my team win by 5-0 and let me tell you something, I have never felt as accomplished with my life in any type of way
Last night we were getting decimated… we were down to our last point of defense. My buddy and I hopped off Arty because I saw there was a sniper squad with no spotter. I kicked the sniper and invited my buddy (sounds shitty, but the guy was playing in the heat with the rest of the infantry) took my buddy to their spawn, killed their arty, tank crew and we started taking points. We then proceeded to search for enemy nodes and dismantle them. By that time I made my way to Hill 5 while searching for nodes, my team called the next point up and I destroyed the enemy Garrison. I 3/4 capped the point before any enemies got there. Commander dropped me supplies and I built a garrison, team rushed there and we won. We didn’t push them back once that game until we took the enemy arty out. Literally just 1 guy in this game can move the deciding factor of a game. Not by kills though, just by decision making
just lost a hour and a half after nearly capping their last point in the first 25 mins. brutal lol. PLAY DEFENSE PEOPLE! lol
My 4th time as a commander was a 5-0 but I owe it all to my squad leaders.

Just played my 1st game as commander. We lost, but it was still a great experience, because everyone was super friendly and supportive

Several months of experience has shaped me into a hardened & wise commander. I have claimed numerous victories and made many friends along the way. Although I still have some grey areas in my commanding knowledge, I have come a long way from the time of writing this comment.
I just got the game a couple of days ago and I've been told to follow orders, everyone does their part to win the game - sure, fair enough.
Then I just got called a f*cking idiot and more because the commander asked me (as a spotter) to put out a garrison where I was, but I apparently put it in the "blue area" on the map instead of the red one (it was literally 2 meters away, I didn't even know)...
We still won, but the commander got SO angry... I'm just trying to do my best 🥲

While Soul only touched on it, if you grab a supply truck to build garrisons when the game starts, immediately spawn a second supply truck on a HQ that's *away from your last capture point*. Good engineers will be asking for one there anyway, and you'll be a god-tier commander to them, even if you fuck up the rest of the game.
100% , let the engineers do the lords work asap.

Yea its nuts how many times I hear Commanders begging for nodes but they fail to spawn any supply trucks. I never ask for nodes. I just spawn 3-4 Supply trucks at the start of every game and I almost always have a full set of nodes 5 minutes later. Engineers know what to do, you just gotta give them the tools to do it.

@@franktank1984 I summon a shitload of supply trucks, but after telling them 4 or 5 times or 10, I say fuck it. But that's the beauty of the game. Sometimes you play with noobs, other times you play with experts.
Long since i played but I remember really liking commander. When you have squad leaders that atleast somewhat listen it’s really fun, feels nice to lead your team to victory and come up with battle plans
Yea having good squad leaders is very important. And without nodes it really sucks... Lol
Tried commander for the first time today since there was nobody willing to, so i was like "well any commander is better than none" and i must say, everyone was very helpfull in teaching. After watching your video there was only 1 thing i didnt know about which was building the nodes, the rest i all learned in 1 game from alot of friendly squad leaders! With only 30 hours ingame as rifleman i led the team to victory ^_^

Lucky you, i tried being commander for the first time besides just to spawn a supply truck. It was assault, we were rolling them, on the last point and had no commander for the last 30 min. I decided to try it since it was empty and we were surrounding the last point anyway. Got an air head and supplies down. SL asked for recon tank north, so i did. Then later says " still waiting for recon tank south", ok but now all vehicles are grayed out even though we had fuel (think max vehicles were spawned maybe?) More SLs start complaining about not getting tanks, after i tell them its grayed out. Then another SL starts complaining "I've asked 3 times for supplies now", dude i literally just took the role 2 minutes ago, and the supplies are still on cool down near airhead, and if you wanted supplies that bad you should have taken the commander role 25 minutes ago. I will never be commander again.

Thank you so much for this guide! Just played commander for the first time after watching this and got a 5-0 victory on warfare, even after we were pushed back to our second to last position. I picked up command about 30 minutes in when the other guy left, and when I finally told the squad leads that this was my first commander match, they were very surprised, all thanks to this great video. My fantastic squad leads who communicated and gave advise on bombing runs etc. were also crucial to our victory. Very much appreciated, and keep up the great work informing people on how to properly win and have fun playing this game!

I started playing commander recently and just stumbled onto this video. When you have tank crews wanting tanks, ask them to switch to engineer and build nodes and then you’ll give them whatever they want. It’s a win-win

Just had an awesome game as commander, didn’t lose a single point except the first grey one and the team did really well, they listened to what I had to say and took initiative as well. I feel like since I’ve improved my confidence irl I’ve become a better leader in game. I gave clear commands and spoke with a bit of authority

I was a logistics specialist in a Combat Engineer Battalion, in the Army's 4th Infantry Division.
Here's a couple of ideas for those who are good at playing the Commander or Officer roles, so they can relay them to all other players, in order to help their team win.
1- Have someone create a logistics team, who goes around in a supply/cargo truck & builds nodes, as well as garrisons in the key spots they need to be, in order to win the game. (The commander can drive forward to set up offensive garrisons, while the logi team sets up the defensive garrisons, nodes, repair stations, etc. )
2- When the game first starts, have an officer drive a 1/2 track, loaded with their infantry squad, to a spot on the map where the commander wants that vehicle hid.
This will be the first spawn point for that squad, or anybody else that needs one, right off the bat.
Additionally, here's an idea for someone who has contact with the devs:
Email them, and ask them to lock ALL vehicles to the types of players who don't need to drive them.
-EXAMPLE: If anybody other than the Commander, an officer, or a spotter or sniper tries to enter a scout vehicle, it won't let them in, so a blueberry player won't steal it.
This goes for ALL vehicles, so you won't have blueberries trying to take off in a tank by themselves........or those who need to transport troops to the front will take ONLY the troop transport trucks, and NOT the cargo trucks, which NEED to be used to haul supplies to key spots on the map. (The logi team needs it so they can quickly set up defensive garrisons AFTER they build the first three nodes in the back zones of the map.....and they can't do that if someone else steals it before they can get to it at the game's start.)
Just started playing a couple weeks ago and your guides have been super helpful. Been getting pretty decent at SL and after watching this video it might be time to give commander a try soon.
Glad to hear it man! In some ways I actually think Commander is easier than SL. You're basically communicating on a single comms channel instead of two like the SLs. And you're not as much in the actual battle so you can think a bit more.
At lev 45 I just started playing as commander. Before that I’ve played a lot of squad leader and spotter. I really enjoy the strategizing.
From my very limited experience, I’ve found that as long as you can keep some garrisons up for your team that are within 200-400m of the objective, your team will be happy.
Other than that, just listen to requests if someone needs supplies, a truck, or a tank. And if your team is about to push in to a new area, send in some recon and a bombing run if applicable.
If you have communicative squad leaders, have them put up garrisons from supply drops and be sure to show your appreciation to them.

Forgot this, tell commanders on Offense/Defense to not be stingy with supply trucks for defending engineers trying to build barricades and other assets on a back point, especially when they have a whole dedicated group of 5+ trying to build it up.
"Nuh uh you only need to build nodes"
"Go use the free one at spawn that some SL already took to build garries"
100-200 fuel is worth winning the game with a good defense.
Nobody builds defences in my games and it infuriates me...
I have to walk up to engineers and yell at them to come with me and do some engineering...
Squad leaders often times don't communicate.
It's great when I can delegate to squad leaders but the communication is such an issue in this game that I have to micromanage squad members...
Just played first time as commander, got a good 7 commendations in 2-3 games and got compliments for my commanding, I recon I did alright it’s really simple in my opinion

Played commander for the first time yesterday had some older vets take me under there wing and teach me how to do things i has a grasp on game modes, nodes, garrisons, and out posts and at that it was on purple heart lane..so i had a bit of a challange but, i kept moral high and had a great artillery crew helping out and always told my boys i was proud when they held off a enemy attack and i gave alot of praise to my recon guys they carryed that match just about got win out of it and so did everyone else.

I've just started playing the game. Only hit lvl40 last night. Most of my experience has actually been in infantry officer which is lvl5, and I'm going to try my first game as commander today!
I have military experience & leadership is something I take great pride in with my everyday life, so I've enjoyed regular success as an infantry squad lead. It's all about communication & delegation. Many of your people will be better than you at various things, so embolden them to become the team's resident experts!
That's my logic anyway. We'll see if my first game as commander blows up in my face lol. I'll update this comment afterwards, thanks so much for the guide Soul!

Had my first 2 games of commander today. We won both of them. Everyone was supportive, and we dominated the enemy. Learned so much about the role from those two games. Great stuff
Great video! Garrisons is a tough subject. Obviously in a perfect world nice spread out garrisons off the point but I’m a big believer in just getting something down near decent cover asap at start of game to get that first point then a backup then get fancy with properly spaced garrisons. I think what we can all agree on is litter map with supplies so it’s easy to get replacement garrisons up regardless of location and where enemy is pushing from. Also cannot stress how big having squads defend is. 1-2 Squads defending win games.

I'm level 100 and never played commander. I like playing squad lead but I just havent felt comfortable enough to jump into it. Think I'm gonna give it a try soon.

Did a double cap using the support redeploy tactic. 15 min wipe on my 5th match. Whenever a vet want to show you a cool tactic do it. Even dude was surprised lol “run back run back we got this”
I played commander for the first time a week ago and even though we won, I knew I wasn’t ready to be commander but I noticed that since the last time I’ve played I learned a lot from it, learned grid distances, learned proper garrison placements and so forth. Still though, I think the next time I attempt to play Commander will be when I reach level 60 or level 70.

This guide is a god send had my first game as a commander and followed the steps and we won without much difficulty on offensive
I like how you included an example of yourself making a mistake. It happens! People need to lighten up and work on constructive criticism. The amount of command chat freakouts is pretty high, especially for a game that's generally really great about working together and trying to pull out the victory no matter what.
I screw up all the time man. It's easier said than done to put all of these tips into practice.

Me and a friend of mine played on a small server and he encouraged me to go as commander. Since it wasnt a big lobby. I was hesitant even though ive only been playing for 3 month's. I asked my friend to break it down for me over the chat and one guy asksd if i really asked about how being a commander works and immediately started speaking negatively to me. I just ignored him, even though i was very discouraged and immediately wanted to drop out of the roll as well as he tried to kick me because it was my first time i kept going. I got the basics of it and even though we lost i had fun. Definitely going to study this viode from time to time to absorb the knowledge so i can play the position more.
One thing to keep in mind is that you can see what resource you're using by the icon above the 3 main tabs this also lets you easily find what resource you want to convert to another resource type

I only play on your server soul. Decided to skip learning Squad Lead and go commander first cause my team needed one. I learned so much so fast in 2 games and everyone was extremely supportive and friendly. I’m kinda addicted to getting better at commander now

I'm new. I've played around as commander haha I had no idea what I was doing. 😂.I wanna learn . But understanding what the commander can do help understand what he does and can do because as someone new I had no idea where the airstrikes were coming from .good video helped alot
It takes some time to get comfortable in the role, but it also largely depends on how the game is playing out and how helpful and experienced your SLs are.
Jesus, I thought Ok Ill take some notes out of the vid an make the best out of it… but that is a freaking breakdown with absolute short and important tips on a complex and important role.

My first game as commander was because it was about 15 minutes into the game and we still had no commander in a fairly full lobby. I figured a completely terrible commander was better than no commander. Most of my squad leaders were very gracious even through some rough patches of gameplay. I did have one teenage squad lead tell me to kms whom I verbally destroyed and all my other SL's defended me. We managed to pull off a win defending the last point. With just a few mins left the enemy was capturing and had 80% cap'd I called in a last second reinforce and we actually defended. Such a good feeling
With this game coming to Xbox game pass it has been so rough.. half the game will be level 1 so I had to step up to squad leader and before long it was getting to the point I had to step up to commander. I’d just like to say.. I couldn’t have done it without you making this video and i couldn’t do it without my squad leaders with mics and their blueberries that listen..
I joined a little late in a game, became a commander, and proceeded to lead a comeback after being pushed back to our HQs
Watched this guide.. 5-0 sweep first game as the commander.. them soldiers made my job so easy. A great group of comrades
My first game playing commander we won. My second game, I couldn't spawn in a supply truck and called called a bunch of terrible names and kicked. My third game I took over about 95% of the way through a steamroll and nobody built nodes or tried to build up defenses despite me telling them that I wanted everyone to fall back and defend the last objective. They were more interested in team killing each other. Oh well I still had fun.
Such a good and important guide. We had a match where our commander spent 20 minutes getting into it with SLs and how he was so good at that game and knew more than them. We proceeded to get absolutely steamrolled by the enemy.
That's frustrating. Especially if it was constant argument in comms instead of communicating what needs to be done to win.
Take it from me as a defence first squad lead, I do appreciates it when, the commander as well appreciates it.

Level 221 here, this is the final frontier for me. I joined a German clan and my German isn't good enough to do Commander, but I think I could manage on an English server and this video really helped me. You can always keep learning, thanks SS!

I always wanted a mil sim game where there was a pre-battle phase where your commander and squad leaders mark up the map with locations and movement orders and you as a soldier get to watch them formulate a battle plan. Once the game starts everyone would already know what to do.
SQUAD has a lot of that on the map. should check it out.

This is a pretty solid guide all-around and helped me out a ton during my first few matches as Commander. If you ever make a revision to this video, I’d recommend adding in a section explaining how to call in abilities. It was a little confusing at first, because the confirm order button was on the right side of the map.
Also, getting used to how orientation and positioning of things like bombing runs, strafing runs, recon planes is a little jarring. Having to make minor adjustments to the position means you have to totally click the bombing run away from the area you want it and click back to the spot you want the bombing run. Otherwise if you click inside the circle on the map, you’ll just change the angle of the run. That can be super frustrating if you’re trying to get a bombing run out quickly after a fresh recon flight, and the bombing run is just rotating around in a circle.
Good points. I too get a little frustrated by the clunky bombing run positioning system, and think they could make some nice improvements there. I didn't want the video to end up being even longer than it is, so I didn't get too deep into the exact functionality of each order's placement and adjustments, etc.
Tonight I just played my first ever commander game. I took it up because no one wanted to take it and jt was super early in the game and some squad lead helped me with the whole thing. I played 3-4 as command and I really love it. I'm excited to play more tmr😃👍

I’m trying to get the level 30 currently. i often end up in servers without commanders and my buddies say i’m a good SL and a good rank commander so they’re pushing me to level up to run commander when no one else is willing to do so. This video helped a lot

did commander yesterday, done before but was ages ago, (recently got back into game) and i was pretty terrible. watching this has reminded me of that i was probably supposed to be doing opposed to what i did.. being in a ditch all my game looking at the map. and allocating vehicles
Something I think should've been mentioned, is that you should always reflect on what you could've done better, especially when you lose. I lost my first full on game as commander, I'll list some things I did poorly:
1) Lack of garrisons
2) Not getting squad leaders to defend enough
2A) Lack of defensive strategy
I didn't drive supply trucks to our strong points to set up defenses, and I didn't get any squads to patrol around them when I noticed none were doing so
3) Not capitalizing on opportunities (and not doing it well when I tried to)
There were several times throughout the match where I noticed opportunities that I didn't take advantage of. some examples being:
3A) Capitalizing on weak enemy defenses
The match was on Remagen and my team had fairly good control over the enemies side of the bridge. There were plenty of squads trying to make their way to st.severin chapel, but they were facing heavy enemy resistance. I had used a recon plane to scout out the coastline, and while I didn't see it at the time, the coastline seemed to have the weakest enemy presence. A squad leader did notice though, and so a couple of squads decided to advance along the coastline, and did get there and start capping, but the enemy got to our point first and so we lost the cap race.
I should've used some of my commander abilities to try and clear out the area and then order my squads to advance along the coastline. If I had done that and had some squads already on defense when the enemy got there, I think we definitely would've won the cap race.
3B) Hesitation to use commander abilities
I touched on this in 3A, but I just didn't use certain abilities enough. There were many times where I should've used my abilities to help my squads but I just didn't.
3C) General hesitation to give orders
I was just generally hesitant to give orders to people and this led many opportunities going unseized.
4) Poor communication skills
outside of HLL, when I'm talking about something, it's usually about complex ideas to my friends or family. And in that regard, I think I have great communication skills. I'm able to boil down ideas to their core, and highlight the specific reasons different elements affect each other for maximum understanding.
That is almost never not what you need to do in hell let loose. I often fall back on the aforementioned style of communication as a force of habit, which ends up making my communication wordy and vague because I'm usually unsure about the exact details.

I played my first game as commander and won! Every single person did their part engineers, officers, tankers. It was the best game I ever played and I got 62 kills with the air strikes. Thanks for the tips man

If they shaved 30 minutes off the long ass timer for warfare I imagine patience would be more of a virtue
I know that I'm a blueberry. But against well coordinated teams. I have seen a commander use a supply drop as a diversion to get the other team thinking that they are trying to push from that direction.
as mentioned in the video dont take anything personally and admit that youre not that good at/ new to playing comm role, most probably squad leaders will cooperate with you as usual and give good feedback about your decisions, never be anxious about taking a big responsibility since the hell let loose community is the most fucking sweet community you could possibly run into. And yeah play comm whenever you can since the whole game is about communication youll be playing the game at its highest potential

Got pushed into my first commander role last night at level 22 on Remagen cause our commander left right after the start and nobody was stepping up. It was really hard and I made a lot of mistakes and we ended up losing but it was still somehow more satisfying than I thought it would be!
Good for you for stepping up and shame on the higher level guys who made you do it at level 22. But hey, it's good experience and now when are do want to start playing commander, It won't be as scary.
Communication is the main problem I have with this game because it's so difficult to get people to talk and work together.

First time as commander I was just drilled like my life depends on it. Everyone cuss me down and said we don’t have a chance to win. But they didn’t know that I had patience so I got us 5-0 by learning and guiding my team the best I can to learn and help.
