  • The simple answer from me is no, I am not tired or fatigued from remakes as of yet but what about the rest of the gamers out there? I thought this would be a fun topic to bring to the table with the recent reaction to Silent Hill 2 Remake. I discuss the balance between remaking classics but still giving us original and new ideas from games. Let me know what you think down below!

Remakes that respect the original while expanding the source is my outlook.
Not for nostalgia, but improving what was done.
Missing content without a good reason why is my only nitpick.
Re3 grew on me after a while once I looked past what was missing and appreciate it for what it was.
But getting new ideas in games and stories is a must too.

My only beef with the REmakes is that they are ret-conning events while continuing the story with 7/8/9. I wish it was remade with one solid cohesive story with side/spin off games in mind (Outbreak, CV, Gun Survivor series).

Because resident evil 6 is literally perfect as a game, it doesn't need a remake, but it would be amazing if it got one, just to perform those kick**s, rolls, counters, slides and combos in the re engine.
It would be the first re engine remake that has actual deep combat\mechanics to it.

Remakes are becoming a mixed bag.
To me, it's just symbolizing the death of creativity in entertainment as a whole. There aren't enough new ideas that are truly worthwhile, so remaking games or endlessly continuing existing franchises is the strategy for success. Would as many people have seen the new Indiana Jones movie if it didn't have the Indiana Jones name attached to it? Or the new Matrix movie? Star Wars and Marvel don't mean anything anymore because it's been run into the ground.
The games industry has now become the most prominent entertainment medium. It has greater reach than TV and movies now, so it has led to gratuitous amounts of trend chasing in order to capture the massive audience that the industry now has.
So many games look the same and it's rather interesting that people are more excited about old titles being remade instead of new franchises. Games seem to be made more by committee than artistic passion. Then, the remade games are altered for seemingly no reason or to appease a mystical "modern audience" that nobody seems to be a part of.
I personally have a pessimistic view of this industry, and the nostalgia bait of remakes is only reinforcing that instead of alleviating it.
Resident Evil should have ended with Wesker's death in 5. But it's not enough. Couldn't stop there and have some form of respect for your franchise. Instead, just crank out spinoffs that only complicate your lore and make sequels that will push your franchise into complete absurdity (e.g. Revelations 1-2, RE6, Village).
This industry becoming more mainstream is one of the worst things that could have happened to it, IMO.

Money has ruined game's, games are made in an 'industry' now, game creation conditions are governed by social political red tape instead of slaved over by passionate people with a vision, game's are watched now not played because of streamers and let's player's, game's are copy paste unreal engine 5 asset packs so look the same and dont have art direction, game's rarely have bestoke game engines made for said game, game's are easily min maxed now, researched or made easy to accommodate new player's, game's now have standardised one size fits all control schemes and controller peripheral choice for game's have been the same abd played with for almost 30 years with only tweaks.
    You get what I'm saying.

I like this. This is an interesting video. 👍
I think the other concern for making new IPs is something I noticed during the Summer Game Fest showcases is seeing new IPs but having the same ideas, the same stories, the same visuals and the same gameplay mechanics. Now that's not every game at the showcases but a majority of them I saw did look like the same thing just with different names.
When it comes to remakes I don't have remake fatigue but I do have a fatigue of calling something a remake while also saying it will be faithful to the original but change so much in the remake to the point where it can't capture what made the original work. I'm fine with with a few changes or changes that make something better. Just not changes that worked and made the original so special.
When it comes to still being able to play the original games that's true but, depending on the game, the graphics can be really outdated that does not hold up. Which is the point for a remake. After Tomb Raider Remastered I would like to see more games like that. I want to see the original Resident Evil games but with modern graphics. Being able to switch back and forth between modern and original graphics would be great.
Final Fantasy 7 is another example of graphics that don't hold up but there is a mod that makes it look like a remastered version. God bless PC game modders. I wish there was a way modders could do the same for the classic Resident Evil games.

Nah. Im tired of bad remakes... It shouldnt be hard to make a good remake when you have a good base. But i would buy a hundred more remakes if they did, legend of dragoon, tenchu, parasite eve, it can go on for days. And lets face it, creativity in the office clearly went out the window. We're getting more artsy graphic looking games lately instead of what felt like more heavy story driven games back then

I think there will always be a place for remakes in gaming as it ages as an industry. Great games will inevitably get old and a lot of them may not age well, and remaking them is a great way for new generations to experience memorable stories that have been told. As long as remakes don't make up the majority of titles, then I'm all for them.

  • @Vohaul86

The first Silent Hill is notoriously difficult to play *legally*, as it wasn't even included in the Silent Hill HD collection. I do own a PS1 version that I can play on PS2, but those won't last forever, so I really hope Sony releases a digital version for modern consoles some time soon.
And I would love if the remakes would include the original game, because that would increase games' availability and might lower the bar to try those older games.

  • @Fonzflicks

I don't think the industry can run out of remakes. Nintendo is sitting on a bunch of IP that can be remade including PS. You can also remake a remake which we will see with RE1.
I think as tech improves, it's good to revisit games and enhance them as if they were made today. The only issue is who is making them. I understand preserving the essence of the original, but like you said, you can always go back and replay them.
I think besides just remaking a game, it's also good to just go back to get ideas. I remember a games like Time Lord and Iron Sword on NES. I keep thinking, why aren't there modern versions of those games or Syphon Filter on PS1. When I say modern, not the context of a perceived audience, but improved tech.

Remakes are fine as long as they are simply good enough in quality, fun to play and being faithful in what makes the original lovable.
i do love what capcom is doing with remakes as they are really fun to play [only thing is RE3 as that one is disappointing]
But however i do love that Silent Hill and MGS3 are getting remakes, as it can revive the franchise and people who missed out on these tittles can experience them, so far they look good .

The issue with SH2 remake isn’t because it’s a remake of a classic horror game. Konami as a company hasn’t proven anything in the last 10+ years. This is basically one of their biggest games they’ve made besides the recent MGS games. And since phantom pain, they’ve produced mostly trash to mediocrity.

I feel there should be a new standard for remakes for sure. Less plain reskins, and more modernization. Refreshed/revamped mechanics. Faithful tweaks to the story/map. Greatly enhanced graphics/performance. It should feel like a whole new experience similar to RE4 remake rather than just the same game with a fresh paint job, otherwise just don’t bother remaking it. I’d rather see a new installment over what’s now feeling like a cash grab on old IP on what modders are able to accomplish on their own

Hollywood producers are very risk averse right now, they are only doing IP's that have been done before or guarantee a ROI. That sort of attitude is bleeding into the games industry, so you'll see publishers push for these types of games as it won't be such a big gamble.

  • @TVthePunisher
    @TVthePunisher 22 дні тому +2

I’m not. I feel that the remakes for Resident Evil in particular fill the void between big major releases (which have always been about 3-5 years based on the timing between CV-4-5-6-7-8…only during the 90’s was it sorta annual) without us having to jump into some so-so spin off game. Sometimes the side games are great such as Outbreak and Revelations but other times they’re not so good such as Survivor/Dead Aim/ORC/Umbrella Chronicles/Gaiden or the multiplayer attempts in Resistance/RE:Verse. With these remakes we are getting verifiable triple A quality titles (minus their plans for RE3 which was always “make a 6 hour game and capitalize on RE2’s momentum”) in between their Triple A new games. I love that - it’s constant high quality RE!
Ya know that eventually they’ll run out - they only have RE0/1/CV/5/6 left to do unless they want to also start remaking side games like Outbreak and Revelations. I’d say let them ride this curve while it’s hot, get all these remakes out…and then they can go back to dropping side spin off games now that the entire series has been brought forward with a modern flare to it.

Absolutely not. From taking games that have great nostalgia for many older fans from generations past to attracting new fans; fixing plot holes, mistakes, or (mostly) good changes to established moments in the series, remakes are done right...for the most part. So long as they don't destroy what made the original good, and the remake will be as good and beloved as it's predecessor.

They should not stop doing remakes but they gotta listen to the fans about what they are doing wrong with them. A common very valid complaint is blatantly removing things instead of adding on top of them then placing very memorable lines like jill asking nemmy if he wants stars and that she will give him stars as one that she will say while she is running away and can be interrupted. Capcom needs to stop removing or misplacing things so horribly. Instead of blaming the fans and not making another remake, they need to blame themselves and try to do better.
More remakes qnd hopefully do overs for remakes with too many blunders.

The RE remakes are phenomenal and I grew up on a few of the classics back in the day. I'll never forget turning off the Playstation instantly after Forest Speyer woke up in classic RE1. I never beat the any of the OG's back in the day but Capcom has been nailing these remakes and it seems other companies have followed and failed. I enjoy FF7 remake and waiting for Rebirth to hit PC, played Dead Space on mobile and the Remake just blows my mind how good the atmosphere feels and to be honest it almost seems more like a massive overhaul with a few additions than an actual remake because it stayed true to the OG. Remakes are a very touchy subject and something not to be taken lightly and as we are seeing today many game studio's are butchering the legacies left by these old masterpieces. Got to say Ant, your take on remakes is exactly how I feel. I am not burnt out on them because atleast the games I do enjoy have been doing great such as FF7 and RE

I never understood the notion that remakes are somehow indicative of creative bankruptcy, especially in regards to the gaming industry where technology drives ideas forward and genres and franchises can come and go based on what's trending at the time.
The platformers, beat em ups, survival horror, and stealth games of old have become very niche genres in modern times yet remakes and revivals can go about renewing interest in franchises and styles of play that are no longer common in the AAA gaming space.
This couldn't be more evident than with Resident Evil 2 Remake not just resurrecting the classic survival horror formula for modern times but kickstarting an entire Renaissance of survival horror games following in its footsteps.
There's nothing wrong with retreading old ground when there's nothing else on the market like it anymore. New standards are constantly set by new technology and when big games like Red Dead Redemption II and God of War are seen as the pinnacle of modern gaming, all those classic games of old are nothing more than a memory of greatness that has long since been overshadowed.
That's why games like Resident Evil 4, Snake Eater, and Max Payne have been and are being remade. So that a new generation with new standards can expand their bubble and discover new types of games just as great as the new stuff that is available today, while simultaneously reclaiming the industry that is so obsessed with horrible trends despite ironically being a trend itself. But it sure as hell forced Ubisoft to step away from their usual annual business and get to work resurrecting Prince of Persia and Splinter Cell in the process.
I'm a fan of great video games and as long as all these remakes can keep producing quality experiences that play great, honor their source material, and look amazing on my TV, then I'm happy. Too many people have unrealistic expectations and act like they can't enjoy anything unless the developers read their mind and do everything 100% the way they would and that's just pathetic behavior. It's sad how common it is, too.

Name me a new horror game that has come out in the last 4 years that got their ideas from the re remakes? Take your time I will wait. Alan Wake 2 is the only game that comes to my mind. Dead Space is a remake so idk if that makes the list. The problem with remakes is the fact that I want to see the original game on the re-engine not a game reimagined with the same name stamped onto the title on the re-engine. Capcoms false remakes are good games just not true remakes. False Re3 remake is a good dlc not a great remake. RE1 Remake and Deadspace are true remakes that lived up to there name. Remake & reimagined are two completely different things that everyone seems to have mixed up.

@ghostinhale5952 Dead Space remake, Silent Hill 2 remake, Alone in the Dark reboot, and Alan Wake 2 literally all exist due to the success of Resident Evil 2 remake. It's not a coincidence that they all just so happened to return. The market opened back up because of Resident Evil and suddenly there's a crop of third-person survival horror games that go back to the roots of classic survival horror design rather than the RE4 formula that was copied in the years before or even the trend of first-person horror games that we were getting after, that even Capcom followed with RE7.
Reimaginings are still remakes. There's various levels to these things. Just like remasters. A remaster can do the bare minimum with a port and just bump up the resolution and call it a day or they could do what 343 did with Halo 1 and 2 or Nintendo with Metroid Prime and give the games all new graphics and textures with improved lighting or even offer gameplay tweaks. Low effort, high effort, they're both remasters all the same. A remake can be 1:1 with its original like we're seeing with Metal Gear Solid Delta, it can follow the original closely but still make significant changes and additions like Resident Evil 1, Dead Space, and Resident Evil 4, or they can full on reimagine it like Resident Evil 2 and 3.
It's much harder to do a 1:1 remake when the gap between the games are so long and the standards for gameplay and presentation have changed so drastically. That's why Resident Evil 4 and Dead Space went down much more smoothly despite both making huge alterations to their game design. At their core, they're still the same kind of game like the first Resident Evil remake was which released only 6 years after its original when the standards hadn't really changed much even if the technology did.
That's not to say Resident Evil 2 and 3 couldn't have done more to emulate their original counterparts despite the improvements in gameplay and presentation, they certainly could have. But I will also say, even when Resident Evil 7 came out, I felt that game was really bare bones, like a glorified tech demo, which was likely due to budgetary constraints which I'm sure also affected 2 and 3 which were in development around the same time. Capcom was in a hole prior to Resident Evil 7 and this was the beginning of their recovery. Even Devil May Cry 5 felt like it had a lot of the same limitations with how it recycles a lot of content during the 2nd half of the game.
Capcom seems to be in a much better place now and the most we can hope for in regards to Resident Evil 2 and 3 which I'm sure they'll want to keep milking for years to come like they do all their Resident Evil games, is that they one day release new editions with tweaks, changes, and added content.

@@Turo602 I don't think Re3 had budget restraints. I think they just got super greedy and released the game way too soon while re fans still had re2 remake fresh in their heads. How can you screw up on one of the shortest resident evil games ever made? I know developing a game is not easy. But the majority of developers got it easy these days if they are working on remakes because the story is already there. The characters are already there pretty much everything is there. The problem is they want to tweak these remakes out for the modern audience. Even though the majority of people who buy these remakes are gamers in their 30's & 40+. And yes what you addressed on the definition of remakes is absolutely correct. If it's remasters you think I am referring to as remakes that's not true. I have been asking for resident evil remakes since the very first remake was made. I even went as far as sending a letter to Capcom pleading for remakes. And they did listen, but they forgot one thing. The fans that were pleading for these remakes were OG fans not modern day fans.

I personally think just a remake should add things to the game like how RE4 added a parry system, stealth, tbh I do want remakes to just add things also like story beats, new places to explore a remake is a chance to recreate a game completely, for me 1 to 1 remakes I just don’t enjoy might aswell play the original if your gonna buy a 1 to 1 remake.

I enjoy these remakes, and I think Capcom has the right idea of altering new games with remakes. I think it’s going to be fun one day when we eventually have the series all remade. I’m hoping Silent Hill 2 does well and we get more remakes out of that series next.
But I agree, remakes don’t take away the originals. I have both versions of RE4 next to each other on my shelf.

We dont need more remakes. Besides, the only great resi remake was on the gamecube. Not only did it improve the look but it kept everything that made the original so great while adding locations and lore while keeping said lore as friendly as possible. Remake 2 cut half of the original game including locations, enemies and an entire scenario. Remake 3 barely scratched the surface of what the original held. Remake 4 was a watered down, micro transaction hell that catered to the most basic and casual gamers, most who never even played any resi games beforehand nor were even born when the original games were around. We need new, fresh ideas. We dont need to keep remaking and reimagining old games. We need to leave the original games as is so the younger generations can appreciate them for what they are and the fun that they still offer, free of having to download anything or pay a subscription to even play the games. Remakes within the last few years have been ball-less, soulless, cash grabs which have been watered down and stripped apart to both cater to and appease a much more casual audience. These remakes are very telling of both the audience's acceptance of mediocre slop and the devs being out of touch and banking off of milking their most popular games because deep down, they know that they dont have to create something new, so long as there's an audience who'll mindlessly consume without thought and or the ability to use critical thinking. Its not only the video game industry that suffers from remake/reboot/reimagining disease. Its the entertainment industry as a whole.

I think their great especially when long overdue but I need some new IPs. Capcom milking RE and so far its doing good. Especially if they do code veronica boy oh BOY that'll be a great day. But I need to see something new instead of relying on the old. There's only so long a series can continue. They can use the blueprint for whats worked. Just have a new set of characters, Premise, World so that we'll see something more original. For ALL companies that's been making remakes. Same with the film industry.

Despite the cut content, the RE2 and RE4 Remakes were *MASTERPIECES* in my opinion. The MGS3 Remake coming out will definitely be a masterpiece as well. Silent Hill 2 on the other hand, not so much. 🤢

I think people need to get rid of the Idea that the Remakes will replace the original, the remakes will NEVER replace the original.
But both versions can happily Coexist together and have their respective fanbases.
