    A lot of recruiters usually recommend the first resume template over the second one for format reasons with the ATS scanners, its pretty conflicting now which resume template to use, which do you think is best?

    Christine, thank you SOO much for sharing your knowledge! I'm not the 1st to say this, but in just 2 videos you provided way more value than 'experts' with thousands of subscribers. I wonder if you could cover the topic of quantified bullet points more. I understand how those are important, but early in my career, I missed tracking the impact I made with my analysis. So now I can't say if my efforts increased smth by X% or returned this or that amount in revenues. Making these metrics up is also a no-go, so if you could address what to do in such cases I'd be forever grateful! Thanks :)

    • @christinejiangdata
      @christinejiangdata  3 місяці тому

      thank you lots!
      yeah, this is a question most students have as well - it's hard to know how to quantify bullet points especially when you don't have "access" to these metrics. there are many ways to do this though - keep in mind metrics don't need to be impact related; they can also be things like: the size of the dataset, the number of team members or people you worked with, the number of clients or stakeholders, the number of presentations, etc. it's the fact that you HAVE numbers on your resume that shows the quantitative thinking - and if they're business impact related, even better.

    • @christinejiangdata
      @christinejiangdata  3 місяці тому

      thank you! be sure to watch my portfolio video, because it's really only specific kinds of portfolio projects that will help your job search (i.e. they have to be relevant to a company, use realistic data, and use the tools as a system). it should be under a "Data Projects and Experience" section in the resume, but the placement itself depends on what your other experience is. If you have tangential work experience, it should be under that, since the most relevant and recent work experience should be at the top.

    This is super helpful! Thanks, Christine! I am wondering how to translate a academic research background into data analytics. As a PhD researcher in a social science field, my research requires a lot of quantitative work and data analysis (mostly using R). However, I do not have the same performance metrics/ profolio that can be tied directly to business. How can I make my background and academic research experience stand out?

    • @christinejiangdata
      @christinejiangdata  4 місяці тому

      good question. i've had a few mentees in the same boat, specifically phds with research backgrounds (one even with a phd in astronomy). their resumes were successful when they 1) included metrics, even if these are not business metrics - this can be the size of the dataset, the number of students you taught, the number of presentations you gave, and 2) spoke about the tools and insights derived from your research.
      ultimately, you want to translate this experience to "data lingo" as much as possible by using phrases similar to those in the job descriptions ("presenting to non-technical students", "data collection and validation", "data consolidationg", "insights were presented", etc). hope that helps!

    I was wondering if you have recommendations for those transitioning into this industry after completing a graduate degree in Machine Learning. How should portfolio projects and resumes be handled, especially if there were unrelated jobs during the graduate program?

    • @christinejiangdata
      @christinejiangdata  2 місяці тому

      main rule of thumb is that your resume should only have the projects and jobs that are the MOST translatable to data, related to the soft skills, technical skills, or industry / domain knowledge in some way. this needs a longer answer than a youtube comment so come to my lunch and learn (in my bio) if you can!

    Great video! Keep up the good work! Regarding resume format, some HR professionals mention that if a resume has a two-column format, it can be difficult for ATS (Applicant Tracking Systems) to parse. What is your suggestion on this, and which format do you recommend?

    • @christinejiangdata
      @christinejiangdata  3 місяці тому +1

      people have raised this to me, but i've checked with multiple recruiters and they agreed there aren't issues (some even say it's recommended for technical roles). as long as you can CTRL+F and find text in the resume (aka there aren't images), you should be good

      @@vektor77 keep in mind this is the format that i've seen consistently work for students - i.e. they actually get a 10% conversion rate (which is decently high for today's market). all of the insights i share in this channel come from what i'm observing actually work with students, not just from personal opinion. but i agree - if someone feels too worried that the design itself is causes issues with ATS, go ahead with the more conventional design - the experience itself is always what matters the most.

      quality over quantity - two projects that show the tools used as a cohesive system, used to deliver realistic business recommendations is generally way more impactful than five projects that focus on the technical tools

    • @christinejiangdata
      @christinejiangdata  3 місяці тому

      this is a larger roadblock that can only be solved by getting some data related experience, either through projects, volunteer experience, unpaid internships, or small freelance projects. there's no "solving" having no data experience on a resume if you don't have data experience - so start thinking about creative ways to get your hands on some data work!

    Hi Christine, thank you for this video! Is this resume format you showed us acceptable for ATS? I am making the simplest format I can now because before my resume was not being accepted/read.
    Also, do you think that using all these valuable tips you gave, the format matters? Thank you!

    • @christinejiangdata
      @christinejiangdata  2 місяці тому

      this format is acceptable for ATS - it's a common misconception that ATS outright rejects people because of formatting. if that were the case, recruiters would be missing out on an insane amount of qualified candidates. as long as your text is searchable (i.e. if you can do ctrl+F for the words), you should be good - and i generally recommend to not use any images.

    Quick question,
    You mentioned that recruiters really only look at resumes for a few minutes. If we are going to showcase our projects, how can we structure them to ensure that recruiters do not lose interest? I am currently creating some resume projects, but I feel that I may be presenting them incorrectly. They seem too dense or cluttered. Could you provide some tips on how to present my projects in a way that highlights my skills effectively without overwhelming the recruiter?

    • @christinejiangdata
      @christinejiangdata  3 місяці тому

      for projects, you need to have high-impact bullets that highlight a few key areas: the technical tool and techniques used, the kind of data analyzed, the insights and recommendations, and how this would fit into a team context. the bullet at 10:39 in this video is a good example. you want to represent these projects as closely as you would represent real work projects - instead of focusing on the "what", focus on the "so what". will do a deep-dive vid on this soon, i totally get how hard it can be to create effective resume bullets!

    Man I wished I got into data analytics 3 years ago, I would prob have a easier time than in today's time. I need to upgrade my portfolio and not do these learning projects. I swear this woulda been okay 3 years ago, now everyone is fighting for one role.

    • @christinejiangdata
      @christinejiangdata  3 місяці тому +1

      it's true that it's more competitive to get into data now - but it's still VERY possible with the right roadmap and it can be very rewarding and worth it, not only given the kind of work involved but the pay / job flexibility / confidence that comes with having technical skills in an increasingly technologically-driven world. remember that it's way more effective to be a standout fit for a fewer number of roles than apply to tons of roles - in the end, focus more on high-quality projects and creating a really strong job application package rather than sending out tons of apps.

    Can I ask some questions? You say recruiters spend < 30 secs on the CV and I believe that is true. But why do I write paragraphs then? Can I keep it high-level and craft a document that 1. eases reading and 2. eases discussing it in an interview? Of course that comes for the cost of details. Is it true that the interviewer won't really read into details anyways? Would love to hear your thoughts! Keep it up.

    • @christinejiangdata
      @christinejiangdata  4 місяці тому +1

      you shouldn't be writing paragraphs, you should be writing high-impact bullets that touch on 1) quantified metrics to show your ability to think quantitatively, 2) technical tools and techniques used, and 3) soft skills like working with stakeholders, communication, etc. interviewers will skim overall and then dig into the details where it's more relevant, so it's important to have these details so that they're there for a deep-dive. hope that's clear!
