The truth is anxiety can effect so many parts of our life from our stomach to our relationships to our work to our eyes to our brain and so many other things. So if you ask yourself is anxiety affecting my work or is anxiety affecting my relationships, then let's dive into the 8 things anxiety makes you do (that you may not know). These are not the only things anxiety makes you do or anxiety affects, there could be many things that anxiety could affect depending on your individual background, brain, body and relationships. Digestion issues were huge for me. Since I’ve been working from home and taking medication for my anxiety, my digestion has improved dramatically. No diet change, just less stress.

Same here! Since I started taking meds I don't need to go to the loo or get tummy aches before the event anymore 🙃
Nerverousity can also cause stomach issues as well as sleep deprevation and stress.
I have always had sleeping problems, but the problem for me is that if I take pills, I get a bad stomach and that is often what causes my sleeping problems in the first place! (And no, it doesn't help if I fall asleep if I get a bad stomach, I just wake up again.)
Oh I definitely feel the digestion issues. I get stressed, my stomach starts rumbling 😭

#9 - Randomly counting things (ex. steps you're taking, stairs you go up/down, pen taps, etc.) I had no idea this was a thing until it came up in therapy. Now it's one of the ways I know my antianxiety med is helping; I don't remember the last time I felt compelled to randomly count things.
I used to count ceiling or floor tiles CONSTANTLY. Or fixate on a pattern (rug, wall hanging, someone's sweater etc.)
I randomly count too. I thought I was hoping insane
Knitting and crocheting are ways in which I relieve anxiety. Having to count stitches seems less stressful than counting random things. The repetitive motion of my hands seems calming, as well.

It answers alot. I have GAD with a depressed mood. I thought I was having panic attacks but now I think it all sums up to these 8 symptoms. My worst are skin picking, feeling like I can't catch my breath or I stop breathing, teeth grinding, irritable all the time, sweating and fidgeting. These all bother me alot the others not as much. Throw panic, socializing and poor eating habits on top of that ....ah heck let's add menopause too, and no wonder I feel insane. Thank you for everything you do to help answer our unanswered questions!
I have autism and every time I get too worried about relationships issues with friends, my daily life is in ruins, I stop taking care of myslef and I'm constantly worried. But for me it's not just anxiety, it's also shame and guilt and stress. But I really do recognize most of these symptoms. Especially the second one - thank you! Finaliy someone who confirms this!

Thank you for all you do…this video was really helpful & also made me realize that a lot of people around me must also be suffering with anxiety as I see so much of the foot shaking and fidgeting & have so many friends that say they just can’t sit still; I’m the opposite & my anxiety pins me to the bed, so I’ve always thought of the ppl that can’t sit still as higher functioning & more motivated, which has caused me to look down on myself as I respond to my anxiety in the opposite way.

So helpful, also a great reminder of reducing the buildup. Breathing out through my nose (vs mouth) is calming for me. When I feel the energy buildup in my body, on the outbreathe I focus on opening and letting that energy flow out of me. I also give myself permission to move, even while seated, when my brain wants me to freeze in anxiety and be perfectly still.

Hey Katie. Just recently found ur podcast. It helps me relax my anxious mind before I sleep. I’ve been struggling with panic attacks and anxiety really bad recently. I was wondering if you could talk about how anxiety takes on physical symptoms sometimes. I’ve been in and out of the hospital feeling like I’m dying when any answer I always feet is that im “just anxious” been going on and off for over 6 years now. Trying my best to read and research and change my thinking so I can stop this constant fight or flight feeling. Thank you for doing what you do.

Hi Kati,thanks for the useful video. I have to deal with anxiety sometimes, and having to take public transportation often triggers my biggest anxiety crises. I find that exercising, yoga, and taking time by myself doing absolutely nothing helps, and if ever I forget my mental health routine anxiety comes back quickly. Could you please make a video about managing anxiety effectively in everyday life and what to do when crises happen?
What great content! I really believe on those effects unexpected it really happens that sometimes no one can understand you for having anxiety. Woah, this hit way way harder than I was ready for. I ‘know ‘ I’m anxious but I focus more on the depression and trauma and ptsd. But all these anxiety symptoms hit way way way more specifically than most other stuff. Shite.

Thanks, I have been having trouble with irritability since developing cronic dyspnea and it makes sense that it is part of the anxiety from breathing issues. Now to explain this to my college disability office.
I just wanted to point this out Kati, when you said that “We find that CBT is incredibly beneficial,” you shook your head many times. I’ve done CBT with my therapist before and when my head felt so full I took out a CBT handout and worked on it. I did find that led me back to my peace of mind

Just a side note that a lot of what you described is associated with autism, ADHD, or both. Anxiety co-occurring with both is also common. Just something to keep in mind as people are looking at symptoms.
Definitely have had gastro issues throughout life. Whenever my narc mom would call me at work my stomach would churn and I'd have to have the conversation in the bathroom. It became a running joke amongst my coworkers as they quickly noticed this.

Hey Kati! Do you you think you could do a video about Fearful Avoidant attachment style and any tips, habits, or practices to fix it?
You don't have to read this part if you're just burning through but here's my story as to why I ask:
I used to have the anxious style. I was terrified of abandonment because, long story short, I was never accepted at home, at church, school, or in my neighborhood. But desperate to find my people I worked hard even going so far as to buy courses and go to therapy to become less of a homeschooled antisocial introvert and into a charismatic personable friend. Well this February I broke up with my most recent girlfriend and I found myself going out to bars and clubs more diligently than ever. I study relationship theory, follow gender studies tiktoks, listen to every input but women's opinions specifically. Somehow I now find myself more terrified than ever. I can't make eye contact with my friends, women used to smile more at me but they can sense my fear and interpret it as creepiness. I'm trying, I'm working very hard, but I can't bring myself to download tinder again and go one more day without a match or message. I'm tired of being ghosted even tho cerebrally I know that's just a natural mechanic of the dating process. I've never been so scared. Sure, fear was always there, but I could overcome it and approach people when I had the Anxious style. Now I've done so much self work I know how toxic and difficult I am. I know how much I'm asking when I ask someone to be with me and I know I don't measure up to the standard good women want. You could say I feel unworthy, but I imagine with just the right work I could MAKE myself worthy. I wish I could stop sabatoging myself out of fear of being rejected or perceived as a creep (that's such a big one, I can't even get into it) so that I could just get into a relationship and feel wanted, make everything feel a little less hard.

I like the way she uses the word 'We'.... It makes it feel more normalizing, less shameful and inclusive. I appreciate that as I deal with the shame of many of these symptoms like the skin picking.

I have IBS... and I have passed all sorts of tests and exams and they found nothing abnormal. So it is stress or anxiety related for sure. In fact i qualify to the 8 things but though I rarely sweat, I tend to sweat in situations where people usually don't sweat. Living in the city is getting pretty stressful and i wish i could move out to the country or at least in a smaller town. But I do love my job and won't find anything like it anywhere else.

I feel you should do a video on triggers for people with bpd. Or what it’s like being in a relationship with someone with bpd. Like it detail and how to reassure them and help them manage. I have bpd and it’s so hard being in a relationship with it. Especially when the only person doesn’t always understand.

My depression and anxiety make me BUY things I want, but don't actually need! It makes me feel better in the moment, but then causes even more anxiety from having done it! 😱
I get the spending thing! I’m so grateful for the pandemic keeping me home, except for essentials like food or medication. My financial stresses have reduced.

I was out shopping with my daughter yesterday and I got angry in the middle of shopping and I just wanted to go home.
I think I shop because it makes me feel good but then when I'm in the middle of spending money I start to get upset and have regret.
I think this started for me before COVID but definitely got worse during COVID I got $2,000 from my mom for Christmas and there was nowhere to go so I spent it all on little things on Amazon.
I think we think that these things are going to make us happy
But they ultimately make us more stressed because it's just more stuff that we have to deal with.

Anxiety in return creates a lot of stress - that in turn leads to restlessness, loss of sleep, lack of eating or over eating. Nevertheless, it's critical to identify the underlying cause of anxiety and address it accordingly. It's best to try out multiple options to see what works best.
Spot on. I have diarrhea and feel sick and throw up 2 3 times a week and skin around my fingers is mutilated. So thankful for my T, she takes it away like magic.
I do a full face sweat when I'm a bit anxious like on the way to work. I can't even put moisturiser or sun block on. And the odd foot tap when I'm seated but not often thankfully.
I get the digestive issues when in stressed but recognise it these days. If I'm v stresses I get leg muscle pain and shoulder pain. 🙄

well now i'm seeking autism diagnosis and know that it was mostly stimming; and that i'm sensory seeking most of the time, not just when i am nervous, haha

Some people think that anxiety is just being nervous about something and that it will just pass after whatever we are stressing about is done. Not my reality, though. If being nervous is like having butterflies in the stomach, anxiety is like 50 cicadas fluttering around down there.
Hi Kati, I don’t know if you will see this but I still thought I would comment hoping you will see it. I have been dealing with long covid for 11 months and now have been diagnosed with non epileptic seizures. They say that my Limbic system is messed up and that I am in fight or flight. However, I’m not feeling stressed or anxious. I’ve been zenned out and really don’t think it is that. Is it possible to be in that kind of state without knowing it? Do you have any recommendations or insight on this?

Many in my family have colitis. I had a terrible bout with it when my anxiety and depression were at their worst. It isn't caused by stress or anxiety, but it sure does make it worse.
Thank you for saying something about body perspiration, for three weeks l encounter symptoms, from head to toe. the therapist discounted it as anxiety, the thyroid scan was normal. I knew it all along it was anxiety one up for me.

my anxiety thing was tearing the outer most layer of skin off my lips with my finger nails. I've started keeping my nails short, and believe it or not, wearing a face mask.
I definitely can relate to the digestive issues, but the yawning one surprised me. I've had times when I just yawn and yawn, but I don't feel tired? I guess that explains it.
For a while I got a pretty bad combo with digestive issues and anxiety. Basically being anxious or very stressed would make me more likely to have to go to the bathroom more, wich would them make me anxious of going out somewhere and having to find a bathroom in a hurry... Got to the point of getting anxious everytime I had to go somewhere new or walk a long distance in case of "what if I really need to go and there's no place close". Also made a pretty bad combination with my bad eating habits and a compulsion to use food to cope with stress and other negative emotions. In reality it's not like I had incontinence or anything, it was 75% emotional and mental state and paranoia. I would even make excuses and not join plans with my friends to go to new otherwise exciting places or procrastinate importing things if the place was far away (got no car or family with one, little money for public transport unless I really need to).Luckily a mixture of managing to reduce some stress and eating better has helped me improve drastically to the point I barely worry about it any more. Goes to show how a few relatively minor things can bundle together and become a big impediment.
I have had overactive bladder for many many years. I have seen several urologists with no resolution. I am convinced it’s my anxiety causing my overactive bladder.

I literally experience everything on this list except for teeth grinding (that I know of). The sweating thing and digestive issues are the most embarrassing issues I struggle with!
I (and some other people) move their feet/legs generally a lot. I’m also doing it when I’m home alone and relaxing (like watching a fun Netflix series). I wouldn’t say that moving your feet/legs a lot always has to mean that you’re anxious right now. And I’m anxious a lot (I’ve got mild social anxiety) but as I said, I’m also doing it when I’m relaxed. 🤷♂️
I do the yawning thing all the time, I hate it. I feel like I can never fill my lungs when I'm dealing with longterm anxiety.
Hahaha! Anxious dreams. I WISH I could have anxious dreams. I wish I could fall asleep so it was even possible to dream. When I’m super anxious, I sleep very little, never truly getting to REM sleep. Sometimes, it goes on until I start having hallucinations (tracers and lights and stuff-not people or voices) until I finally sleep 9-12 hours, and then it starts over.
I remember a year or so ago I would wake up in a puddle of vinegar smelling sweat. Very unpleasant, is that the sort of smell you would get from the other sweat glands you mentioned?

I wonder if (because anxiety and depression can be linked,) being cold is part of anxiety too. I get warm from the adrenaline yet when I'm super anxious or depressed I get cold. It's the type of cold that doesn't go away even with multiple layers of clothing yet externally I'm fine. It's similar to how you feel cold with a fever. I've always wondered if the heat you get from anxious adrenaline could flood your brain to the point where your body just reacts like you have a fever. Hope this makes sense
I suffer an anxiety disorder that makes me stressed and tight, what in turn, robs me of energy and makes me slow to move. I've struggled all my life with lost jobs and people hating me and making fun of me. When I was around 3, there was a TV aerial that made ghost sounds when the wind blew at night and I was terrified and I screamed and screamed, but my naive parents just let me scream, thinking I'd get used to this. I've been to shrinks but all they can tell me is to relax, what doesn't work. Booze helps but I worry about developing a drinking problem.
Lately I have been attributing a lot of these symptoms to menopause. So nice (eh, not).
One of the ones that bother me the most is fidgeting with my hair to the point where my arm hurts ,now I can’t even have it resting closed without it hurting or being uncomfortable
I was sort of hoping you would mention non-epileptic seizures (or pseudoseizures), although that's not a common symptom.
When I was pregnant (12 years ago), I started "blacking out", I would get extremely dizzy/lightheaded, the room would spin and I felt like I was going to faint, it got to the point where I couldn't take a shower unless my husband was home in case I fainted (I even got one of those medical alert buttons, I was so scared). Then it started getting worse, I would feel all the same symptoms, but then my eyes would roll back into my head and flutter and I would start shaking and twitching (just like a seizure) which could last anywhere from 2 minutes to 20 minutes and I usually had multiple episodes of shaking/twitching in a row, it was extremely exhausting and afterwards I would have a migraine and would fall asleep (from the exhaustion).
My doctor's were, understandably, worried, as was I and I already had a high risk pregnancy. It took a bit of figuring out, but turns out I suffer from non epileptic seizures and still do, just not as often unless I'm dealing with something extremely stressful in my life.

Ohhhh, this explains why I have to pee very badly after a hard cry. Which I am currently experiencing due to relationship stress.

Its the yawning/fidgeting for me id get up and move around constantly or jolt sometimes or ill look around a lot or even just look down all the time
i feel like i could get an anxiety overload and i look like im okay but all that overload sometimes leads to this strange numbness i dont fully understand it
Haha I was literally fidgeting while you brought up that point. What I did to turn it into something more productive was buying this toy called kendama which is like a yoyo and I learn some new tricks when I feel like I need to do something with my hands.
1. I am so glad somebody said that conscious deep breathing sometimes GIVES ppl anxiety. Because that’s what it does to me.
2. I am diagnosed with GAD. But going over these symptoms made me say: Boy do I have GAD 😳 lol
I have been using guided meditations for about 5 years. Sometimes I don't want to take deep breaths. Focusing on my breath can be triggering.
I find that if I turn towards my breath and just focus on slowing it down does have a calming effect.

I lost a tooth to bruxism. Every part of it was very painful, the causes and the effect, suffering years on end.
A recent study: "Even prior to the pandemic, more than half of American adults were experiencing financial anxiety.” So most of the people feeling what you say simply can't afford to escape their distress. Going out with other people, love, kids, vacation, a home... Without money, you will have none of these things.

I have a night guard and a retainer, as my grinding would move my teeth out of alignment, making orthodontics necessary if I didn’t have those two items.
Didn’t realize how sensitive I am, until listening to this video.
I had an autism/ADHD assessment, but the psycholog
ist denied it for me. Sensory issues have been part of my life. At 80, now, any breathing exercises or physical activity like yoga have helped.

My brother-in-law and his and my sister's two kids all bounce their leg constantly. I constantly get stomach trouble when my stress/ anxiety is triggered.
Sweating, agitation, teeth grinding, and fidgeting are all my symptoms.
Suddenly all my problems makes way more sense..
I have a bad acid re-flux and been in and out the doctors office for like 2 years without anything that works or help.
The dreams/nightmares too! Breathing is just confirmed to be asthma in the age of 27, soooo.... Irritability, yep. Picking face, hands, scalp, yep. I grind my teeth, and got a night guard that helps so much! I fidget too.. I started sweating a lot, at all times a few years ago, its so uncomfortable and it smells bad :c

I have acid reflux. Using a wedge form for a pillow helps to reduce it.
Meds made things worse. I currently take a Betaine Hydrochloride capsule with each meal. It took a while for the reflux to calm down, but it’s much better.
I’m not a medical person, but it might work for you, as well.

I have a major panic attaxk 3 weeks ago and then the anxiety caused me to not eat for 2 weeks.
