    Did this on my spectrum strat from 04 when putting in a larger trem block. Didn’t even need to remove the neck or add cards. Just a couple hours of figuring out where all the bolts needed to be. I use the skinny top heavy bottom Ernie balls on most of my guitars, besides my tele. I play dadgad or drop tuning most times. Seems to float a few mm off the body and get the job done. Also added an additional spring for better tuning stability to the block.

      It is a fun guitar. Did you know these custom Duncan pickups have different pole spacing than standard strat single coils?
      It’s so they line up with the strings better but Duncan begged fender to not make them do it because it would cause confusion if someone tried to change a pickup cover.
      I found that out when I called Duncan to find out why my other pickup covers wouldn’t fit. 😉

      @@REXYLAB they are the Seymour Duncan SSL-1 with the RWP in the Middle ... I changed the middle and neck covers on mine because I put them on another guitar hahaha, I changed them for white ones from my old Pacer Deluxe 87 and they fit well
      The strange thing is that the poles in the cover did not fit on other new Duncans (2014-2020), the ones that came in my Lite Ash were from 2007
      Fun facts : All the hardware is Ping excellent quality, the original tuners work well and the bridge is excellent... it reminded me a lot of the old Fender Ultra

    Im curious to see what you do with the springs. When i float a Strat trem i set the hook further into the body on the bass side of the trem. I find that more tension on the bass than on the treble helps with tuning stability and return to pitch. I have one with two springs on the bass side and one on the treble side with a little tilt for a more firm feel. And one with one spring on each side with a more pronounced tilt on the hook for a lighter smoother feel. Im interested in seeing your tricks!

    I have a 2006 American Fender Strat (THe 2006 60th Ann. edition Am. Strat to be specific) with a 2 point tremelo system. I was wanting to put 5 Raw VIntage Springs in it to imitate a Jimi Hendrix Strat that has 5 trem springs. I did have an extra/replacement spring included with my guitar when I purchased it, but that would only leave me with 4 trem springs, and I would need to match a spring to have 5 stock trem springs, but the problem I then run into is that the springs that came with my guitar are a long stronger/stiffer than the old Fender trem springs, and also I think that includes the Raw Vintage springs because they are trying to copy the older springs from the 1950's/1960's.

    • @REXYLAB
      @REXYLAB  Рік тому +1

      Are you wanting the trem to act like a fixed bridge? Is this for tone? What is the goal you are trying to achieve?

    • @JDStone20
      @JDStone20 Рік тому

      @@REXYLAB I am trying to get as close as possible to the Jimi Hendrix Strat guitar sound, and since he used 5 springs for the trem, I am trying to replicate that. Right now I have 3 springs on my trem, set up floating the way it came from the factory. I would like to keep it a floating trem. I am trying to emulate a vintage 6 point trem with my 2 point trem basically, like the 1960's Strats Hendrix used. Edit: I am trying to get the tone of a 1960s Strat, with a floating bridge, and use 5 vintage style springs to replace my 3 modern springs.

      @REXYLAB  Рік тому +1

      @@JDStone20 ok, I see where you’re going.
      If (and it’s a big if) that would actually get you closer to a Hendrix tone I would think you would need to use a 6 hole trem.
      That being said I am extremely skeptical that springs of any brand would make a significant difference in tone. Especially if you run your guitar through a fuzz and then into a Marshall stack.
      The thing about Jimi Hendrix is that he was actually Jimi Hendrix. He could make anything sound like Jimi Hendrix.
      But, I don’t know for sure. However, I do have an old 6 hole Strat, a recording studio, and a UA-cam channel. So I tell you what, I’ll buy a set of these springs and compare them to the original fender springs, the Floyd Rose noiseless springs, the FU Tone noiseless springs, and anything else I happen to have lying around spring wise. I’ll do it with both 3 and 5 as well and won’t reveal what ones are what sound clip until later.
      Who knows, maybe it will make a tone difference but I really doubt it would make one that was actually significant. It will for sure make your vibrato much more difficult to play.

      @@REXYLAB Awesome! I always wondered how much these little details matter, if at all, like you said, after the signal is ran through a fuzz pedal, amp, etc. It would be interesting to A/B it and see if there is any difference. I don't think I can get close to a 6 hole sync trem, the 2 point is a completely different design basically. I get it that Jimi Hendrix is going to sound like Jimi Hendrix no matter what he plays, but I think it is fun to try and get close to imitating his sound and playing technique. I have only been playing a few years so I have a long way to go still.

      @@JDStone20 the absolute best advice I can give anyone is spend your time and money on practicing and education.
      Almost everyone (even me) at some point just can’t live without the latest and greatest new thing from company XYZ. What nobody wants to admit (even me) is that it is a subliminal bargain we are trying to make to pay to get better rather than earn getting better with practice. This is such a big problem that I plan on making a video about it.
      But, I’ll still do the spring comparison.
      If you want to see me get absolutely silly about something like this check out the link where I make what I thought was a funny video about the great pickup controversy started by Glen Fricker. This was meant to get Glen’s attention and hopefully his help for The Squishy Guitar Project, a nonprofit organization that gives guitars to children with rare and terminal diseases. Nobody got that. See if you can spot the two times I mention it.
      Remember, this was something I did for fun and I stated many times in different ways that this test will prove absolutely nothing. But I did have fun making it.

    I have a 2017 Jackson dinky and I plan in B standard, using the mammoth slinky's. I've gotten the action pretty damn low, but I want to have action a little bit lower towards the end of the neck where it gets closer to the body. The problem is I have one of the three bolt Jackson's and was wondering what you recommended..

    • @REXYLAB
      @REXYLAB  Рік тому +1

      Make the neck as straight as possible and tilt it as long as you can raise the bridge. If it’s a fixed bridge and you can raise the saddles that’s ok too.
      If you haven’t heard I’ll share this with you. Low action means you need a LIGHT TOUCH! If you grip the hell out of your strings or pick excessively hard low action is a relative thing.
      Also, if it’s a Jackson it might have jumbo frets. If so those also don’t like super low action and definitely require a light touch.
      Light touch is not that tough. I started as a drummer that picked up bass and then guitar. Plus for years my attitude was, “if it’s not bone crushing metal then fuck you”. So if I can do a light touch anybody can.
      I truly hope that helped. If you run into any issues ask me and we will work on it.
      In the future I’ll be doing a video on converting a standard tuning guitar to B. I hope you like it.

      @@REXYLAB I have a fairly light touch. I play more technical stuff so I prefer to have the lower action. I do have my neck pretty straight and it is an adjustable bridge. It's a Floyd rose. The three bolt pattern just kind of threw me off so I wasn't sure what kind of trick I could use since it's shaped a little differently than a square 4 bolt neck. Also it definitely has jumbo frets. I usually do all my own work so I'm pretty comfortable and familiar with working on and setting up guitars

      -Changing to wide string hooks and changing the tuning to B standard
      -Sound demos of all combinations of string roller and cam material options
      -how to install graph tech ratio locking tuners
      -how to swap the nut for a graph tech graphite nut
      -how coil tap actually works
      -how to install a freeway switch 10 position switch

      The last two are exciting because there will be sound demos and coil tap single coils+freeway 10 position switch=20 tones instead of the usual 5 with a typical Fender Strat.

    I'm genuinely confused and must be missing something. Why would I need to shim the neck to float a bridge? Surely you just adjust the claw? I've only heard of shimming to change the neck angle to the body if the guitar is made badly and it's impossible to adjust the bridge to get the action to where you want it.

      @@REXYLAB That's not what I said is it if you look at my comment again which I genuinely posted in good faith and was interested? "Why would I need to shim the neck to float a bridge? Surely you just adjust the claw?" i.e. adjust just the claw to float a bridge?? If you could answer that for me that would be great as it wasn't clear to me why you are shimming the neck in relation to floating the bridge. I guess the guitar had some other issues maybe.

    I might be in the minority, but personally, I kind of prefer a decked trem. But that's because I'm not that great of a player, and when a note goes out of tune flat and back into tune it doesn't sound as bad as a note going out of tune sharp. I understand why better musicians like floating trems though. And either way it's interesting, and it's useful to know the intricacies of how different things affects your setup in different ways.
