Me dad passed away 4 years ago yesterday. He was the epitome of a Geordie lad. A hard worker. Family first. The phrase Wye Aye Man will always make me smile and remember.
Mark Knopfler, Jimmy Nail, these men brought my dad home when he listened. I'll be forever grateful for their music.

Whey aye! I just have to say I’m so bloody glad I’m a Geordie! Geordies are, IMO, the salt of the earth, straightforward, honest, kind, the one you would like to be by your side in a time of need. I’ve lived away for a number of years but I’m very glad to be back. I also think our artists do not get the recognition they deserve. Jimmy Nail, brilliant, Lindisfarne, ignored by local radio stations and so many others. I love where I live. :)

I never went abroad for work myself, but lots of my pals did in just such circumstances as this song describes. It is just so true to life. I think this song is a true "Folk Song" in the sense that it truly captures a time and social history of Geordieland. It isn't heard anywhere near enough on mainstream media.

I distinctly remember buying the original CD single of 'Why Aye Man' (as well as it's parent album 'The Ragpicker's Dream') on it's release in 2001. It's easily one of Mark's best solo tracks. Needless to say, I also love his extensive work with Dire Straits.
Incidentally, this main title theme tune to 'Auf Wiedersehen Pet' Series Three also features cast members Jimmy Nail (Oz) and Tim Healy (Dennis) on prominent backing vocals.

This wonderful and unique artist deserves the Noble prize in literature, no doubt. His songs are never banal. He always talks about the real life, the love, the hard and humble works, the war, the disperates, the hope for change, the unemployment and the work as a social redemption, the prevarications of powerful people, the positive and negative aspects of the celebrities, the cynicism of the show business, the economic, social and politic distortions of the modern society, the effects and the crisis of the capitalism ecc. ecc. and all this with precise references historical, social, geographics, literary, cultural and social customs in beautiful and poetic lyrics. God bless Mark Knopfler.

    "Why Aye Man"
We had no way of staying afloat
We had to leave on the ferry boat

    On the run to germany
We had the back of maggie's hand
    Times were tough in geordieland
We got wor tools and working gear
And humped it all from newcastle to here
Why aye man, why aye, why aye man
Why aye man, why aye, why aye man
We're the nomad tribes, travelling boys
In the dust and dirt and the racket and the noise
Drills and hammers, diggers and picks
    Mixing concrete, laying bricks
There's english, irish, scots, the lot
    United nation's what we've got
    Brickies, chippies, every trade
    German building, british-made
Why aye man, why aye, why aye man
Why aye man, why aye, why aye man
Nae more work on maggie's farm
    Hadaway down the autobahn
    Mine's a portacabin bed
Or a bunk in a nissen hut instead
There's plenty deutschmarks here to earn
    And german tarts are wunderschoen
    German beer is chemical-free
    Germany's alreet with me
Sometimes I miss my river tyne
    But you're my pretty fraulein

Mark Knopfler is one of those artists who demand expressions from "A" to "Z" from dictionaries, describing his entire trajectory of success, respect, dedication and donation to world music and art. Vocation is not enough without LOVE and he has already proved that he has plenty left, because we can feel it in his songs His talent is consolidated and eternalized by all generations, which is an extraordinary feat and a great pride for music and all of us, its fans. Single and multiple artist in attributes and qualities, among all, only one was missing; he is undeniably INCOMPARABLE! Mark Knopfler has it all, it's just unparalleled. Thanks Mark, I escaped the back of Maggies hand, and ran to Germany, your songs and albums kept me determined, Unt ich was eine soldaten (Britischer) the haunting melodies and lyrics were a great balance to being in a place not home, yet was to become so.... thanks

Not usual in Mark's solo career (in which I'm often a big fan of the lyrics but the music much less so), here music and lyrics are a perfect blend. I love singing it to myself, especially because of my "love" for all things German. "Les Boys" comes to mind, too.

i worked a bricklayer in the mid-90. It´s true, we did have a plenty of british construction workers everywhere. And hell, they were not good. Thery were EXCELLENT. Even we could learn a lot from them. True workers with passion and ethics.

I was an international student at Newcastle University and I came to love the Geordies. There was one guy on my course who had such a thick Geordie accent that I honestly did not understand a word he said at first. But it grew on me. And though this was 15 years ago the North East is still a place I long for. The Tyne, the coastline, the (few) shipyards... Whenever I see a bunch of Geordies in line at the airport, the lads in their back and white jerseys, the lasses in their pink temperature-independent almost-nothings, my heart leaps and I just want to jump into that plane.
