I'll show you how I use small batch canning session to preserve the abundance of fruits of vegetables currently available at the farmers market, your local grocery store or what you may be growing in your very back yard! I'll also give you quick and easy lunch, snack and dinner ideas using seasonal summer foods, as well as feature some of my favorite canning recipes, preservation books and tools for this time of year. It's canning and preservation season and this is how you can can, dehydrate, freeze, ferment, and yes, "do it all" so that you build a deliciously, stockpiled pantry full of food you and your family will enjoy!

      Hi Julie! Aww, I appreciate this so much. I've held this dream in my heart for so long and, honestly, I would think, "how am I ever going to take the next few steps and learn about how to raise birds if I'm here in this townhouse?" The Lord answered my prayers and sent Crystal, and truly, the years that I spent treating a store-bought bird like my own bird, wasn't completely off base! I've been so proud of myself these last few weeks. I wasn't sure how most folks would react here on the channel because I've only ever shown cooking and gardening content, but truly, learning the full range of farm skills is my goal. Thank you for your encouragement!

    Kudos to you for showing the whole process of butchering. Many UA-camrs are afraid to do that. It's important to know where your food comes from and knowing it was humanely and lovingly raised, makes a huge difference. Great video! Thanks

    • @BecomingaFarmGirl
      @BecomingaFarmGirl  9 місяців тому +11

      Amen, friend! You said it best; I want to show the full perspective of raising and caring for birds, and, as someone who will have birds one day, butchering is an essential skill I've got to get very comfortable with. I'm so appreciative to have found a bird mentor that's giving me such a hands-on experience.

      I love your videos and applaud that you want to show the whole process but UA-cam will demonetize your video for it. Not sure if they will take it down or not. It’s a shame they won’t make exceptions for teaching/learning videos. Keep up with making your waiting room your classroom, I get so much out of your videos. Take care.

    I'm a brand new subscriber. Man, I love your channel! I grew up in a household with one sibling, always eating name brand processed foods, and watching TV. Now I have 8 children, never watch TV, and live on a little homestead with chickens for eggs and meat, a milk cow that just had her first baby, and 3 pigs. I'm learning to ferment, can, freeze dry, make cheese, water kefir... You name it. I say learning, because I often fail more than succeed, but we are getting there. It's a lot of fun and a lot of work. Your upbeat attitude is fabulous. And I like your Dad, too!! I've already learned a ton from you and expect to learn a lot more. Thank you!!

    You are cultivating contentment where you are right now! Good for you! You're not waiting to be happy. You're appreciating where you are, and what you have right now! That is the secret to a happy life! ❤

    • @BecomingaFarmGirl
      @BecomingaFarmGirl  9 місяців тому +4

      Amen, Julie! Joy is found along the journey and tomorrow is not promised. While a homestead is an important goal, I've got to appreciate the gifts I have now (a roof over our heads, no matter what the size, employment, my health, my parents). And, even as you "wait" for a homestead, that doesn't mean you should be 'inactive' because lots of homesteading skills (especially ones related to food prep and preservation) won't change even once you have a bit of land. I've shared before that if I rush the years and think I can't be happy until my homestead dream, I've got to realize what may be different when that happens? Loved ones may have passed, my health could fade, who knows what. You're right, I'm happy, right now!

    I just wanted to thank you for your "front porch" comments. I am an Army wife, and we move so much, and I find myself so stressed when we do. I lament the loss of our previous home, and then stress over the new one, all while dreaming of our "forever" home. I love how you pointed out that we should enjoy what we have now, even while working towards goals of the future. That really spoke to me, today. I love all that you do, thank you so much for sharing bits of your life with us!! ❤❤❤

      Hi Katie! Yay, I'm always happy to meet other small space homesteaders. And even bigger kudos to getting the hubby on board, I know that's not always easy! I have come to LOVE knowing that I can take my time learning homestead skills, save up money, build a community online and in person of likeminded folks BEFORE I actually have land, so that when I do, the whole experience, and what I intend to be my dream, won't feel overwhelming. You and I don't (yet) have land, but we're both on our homestead journey!

      Failure isn't failure! It's an opportunity to know what not to do next time! I've been trying to sow and grow a garden this year in my new place with absolutely no success, aside from a tiny radish 😂 (squirrels and birds dig up my seeds and bug infestations are at an all time high). But i came upon a random tomato that I did not plant and it produced so well. Only try to control the things you can. YOUVE GOT THIS!

    What a great video! I'm originally from MD. Lived there for 30yrs, growing up on my grandfather's farm, which he took over after his father died, until the Baltimore beltway was connected and all the farms disappeared. He had a market space in Belair Market for decades. Then I moved to Southern PA for 37, and moved to NE Texas 2 1/2yrs ago with my mustang mare. We are both definitely missing Southern PA...and seeing Gettysburg makes me even more sure I'm moving back to Southern PA. Missing those mountains, the beautiful landscape, and definitely the beautiful spring, summer and fall weather. Sometimes God has to allow you to find your dream isn't what you'd thought it would be and it isnt greener on the other side of the hill. Love your channel!💕

      Hello Mary! Aww, I'm so happy you joined me in my kitchen. It's small, but plenty of good meals and preserved jars come out of it! I am so glad you understood why I shared the quail dispatch part. Since I plan to keep birds one day, it's an important skill I need to learn and I so appreciate Crystal's guidance as I learn from her with her birds. While I love the artistry of the kitchen and the garden, the other side of homesteading life is hot sweaty days doing chores, shoveling poo, dispatching birds, etc. I'm so appreciative that you understand this and didn't mind me sharing that aspect. The joy is truly in the journey!

    I used your code and purchased my first greenstalk because of you. I wasn't able to use it this year because I broke my ankle, but I can not wait to use it next year. Your channel is so inspiring, informational, and enjoyable. The way you came across is so sincere, relatable, and down to earth. You have inspired me to learn gardening and canning, which I have never done before. I was so shocked to see the harvesting bc alot of channels shy away from stuff like that. So, thank you for sharing it was a great learning experience. You did exceptionally well, as if you have been doing it for years. In one of your past chat videos, it was so heartfelt I even cried. My heart goes out to you. You talked about your life, etc...and how you had a few elderly friends which is awesome you will definitely learn alot 😊. I have a few myself. I DREAMED of moving to the country, and I mean rural El Salvador, since I was a young teenager. I even knew what my house would look like, and the animals I'd have and fruit trees that would grow around it.
    I almost gave up on that dream when I was diagnosed with SLE (Lupus) when I was 25. But I found that dream house, just as I'd seen it when I was 18, when I was almost 50. When my late hubs and I moved in, in 2008, it was complete. We ended up with chickens, ducks, cats, dogs, avocado trees, and mangoes, bananas and a bunch of other tropical fruits no one's ever heard of. And we were even able to take the little plot of land organic if only for ourselves and a few of our neighbors.
    What she says is right. While on your journey, try out versions of your dream. Work on recipes, learn skills, make do with what you find along the way, you never know what you'll use to make your dream a reality, and keep it in your life.
    My hubs passed on, but I have had a million memories to keep him alive in my heart. My grandkids now need me, and my house is now a support for another family that needed it more than I.
    The Universe is not for the wants, but for the needs. ❤

    I dream of having a homestead, too. I'm single so, probably 1 acre would do just fine. Maybe two acres if I have housemates. I would like to have a pool in the backyard. At first I was thinking built-in pool, but some of the above ground pools are nice. Anyway, I want enough land to have a good-sized veggie garden and some fruit and nut trees and, definitely, some berry bushes. An outbuilding to store my gardening tools would be helpful. My second choice would be to have an apartment with a good sized, sunny deck for vertical gardening. Thanks to you, I know it can be done. Hallelujah! :)

    You are so right about the cost of refrigerators. And when we bought our last one and it went out within a year and after six repair visits it never did get fixed and after a battle with the refrigerator place we finally got our money back and bought a very plain refrigerator on the advice of a salesman and the repair man. He said these refrigerators are not built to last your best bet is to get a plain and simple one.

    Great video! I just got that apple peeler from a thrift store. I want to make applesauce, applepie filling, and my own apple cider.
    Your mom is so sweet! I love her reaction when she saw the refrigerator.
    I work at 4 Giant stores doing resets. Whenever we do the sets, some items get marked down 75%. Sometimes I catch the sales. This cycle we are doing canned tomatoes, canned vegetables, and coffees. I try to check their meats that have been reduced after work.
    I live in PA. I grew up in TN. The deers have been real stinkers the last 2 years - jumping the fences and eating at everything. I even planted basil near things in hope that would keep them away. For years we grew potatoes in a garden with no fence and they never touched them til last year. I guess it is time for taller fences or electric fences.

I totally surprised my mom with the fridge because we talk everyday and she couldn't believe I didn't tell her! Giant has really surprised me with their markdowns. More recently, I'm noticing those sales and I stock up when I can. Thanks for giving a heads up on upcoming markdowns I should look out for. Drats, that tough to hear that the deer have been devouring your garden. If its not one thing, its another!

      Hello friend! Yes, I love applesauce. The homemade version is naturally sweet and easy to make if you have the corer/peeler device! I'm so happy to hear you enjoy my features of the quail; I'll try to sneak a few video shots of them into upcoming content.

    Thank you. I've been canning for probably 50 years and dehydrating for about 20 years. I have made granola before but had no idea how to make these other recipes. I don't really eat cereal myself but my grandkids would probably love it. I wanted to add something to your roast chicken recipe that I have found through decades has always made my chicken or turkey taste better. Along with the other vegetables I always add carrots which seem to make everything tastier and tender.

    Your videos are so motivating, thank you. My paste tomatoes didn't do well this year so I wasn't planning to preserve because I don't have homegrown. I did brake down and buy some for tacos. Watching this reminded me of your willingness to give up the ideal to learn how to homestead when the time comes. I should be willing to give up the ideal, homegrown, to have homemade on the shelf which is better than store bought. I paused mid video to put those store bought tomatoes into the dehydrator and I'm going buy more to make salsa, bruschetta in a jar, and pico de Gallo.

    Did you know that you can make and can corn broth with those cobs before you dry them out to use as fire starters? Yes ma’am you can, and it is delish! I follow Carol the thrifty chic housewife on UA-cam and she has a great recipe for corn broth. I don’t always roast the corn first if I’m using it for something else, but I always save the cobs to make broth. I’ve used it to make the best coen chowder. And I’ve even used it as a soup base. The possibilities are endless! I sure hope you try it!

    There’s a saying my grandma used that I have tried to live by. “Bloom where you’re planted.” She went on to say that contentment is a choice that we make each day, not something we have to strive to achieve. We make our own contentment by choosing to live our lives to our best ability, wherever we are, whether that’s a place we dwell or a stage of our lives.

      Ms. Denise! It's always a pleasure to see you on the channel. I've worked my way up to it over the years (working with raw meat and the less common parts of the bird (organs, feet, necks, etc). I see that you've been up to canning in your kitchen too!

    I am so proud of you about the quail!!! Well done!!! To be honest, I’ve had it in the back of my head about getting quail or chickens, but I honestly don’t think I could butcher one… Unless it was a real jerk. 😅 Just fyi, I work at Lowe’s as an overnight, stocker. I don’t know if all lows are like this, but I know that during the day they get appliances that are either returned from a delivery due to scratch and dent, or they come to the store damaged, or a display model of an item is being discontinued for display purposes. Usually by the end of store hours, they set up the appliances in the “main drag“ that runs between the two sets of aisles down the center of the store. When the first shift comes in, they place the reduced price tag on it so it can sell fast because it’s “carry out only“. You can get appliances for anywhere between 30% to 75% off regular price. So if you have a Lowe’s near you, you may want to either befriend their appliance manager or regularly go shopping in the early morning hours, within the first hour or two of opening. 😉 Keep up the phenomenal work! And thank you for sharing your life, skills, and wisdom. 💙💙💙

    I live in Pennsylvania and caution you about buying property here. Some areas have very high property taxes. Be sure to check those out if you do decide on PA. We do still have some beautiful farming areas.
