There's something about the original AoE aesthetic I really enjoy, even if it isn't my favorite strategy game from a mechanical standpoint, I really love how they brought pre Roman wars to life.
OMG that immediately brought me back to 1997... Actually, AoE was one of the biggest revelations in my gaming life. Thank you very much for that hardcore content!
IMO, walls are not worth repairing. Better to ,"wall up" behind the one that is crumbling while the enemy is attacking or to just destroy it and build a new new one. After all, it's only 5 stone. Overall, a very effective deterrent. I know it's computers but against a human being, I wouldn't even try to go through a wall except with catapults..
That was beautiful dude!!! My grade 5 teacher had us all play the Egyptian learning campaign back in 97 in history class. She was a huge tech nerd, and felt that it would be a good teaching tool. She even had one of the first digital cameras! And let me tell you, those pictures looked like crap!! Very skillful play though. Worlds above my level lol.
Pffff what a bs comment for Christ sake! You don’t really expect anyone to believe this nonsense,do you? UA-cam is THE platform with the largest number of losers desperate for likes who make up stories.
Tbf they are all strategy games, but to Stu's credit he has a broad knowledge of their unique mechanics, and is willing to exploit whatever he can to get the upper hand.
I love this game, even the remastered version makes the member berries hit god damn hard, the one strategy game i would LOVE to see develop further than it was was dark colony.
Damn dude that was pure chaos at the end. But the eco and the lures were amazing! I used to love that avalanche effect in AoE. Thanks for bringing me down on memeory lane! (Of course my pc would have bent over the amount of units here. 50 pop was all I could handle)
Loved to play this game before, also my fav civilization to play was greeks. Also, *very* nice timing on the walls, that was the decisive play in the game.
I really like thi game, but this expemplifies why I hated the remaster so much. The AI was left untouched, it's the same hellscape of micromanaged individual units acting separately. Game is about AI abuse and patience. Not to say that's any easy. Amazing job man. Mad skills being shown here.
What in godsname is that sound at 2:40? Sounds like "Ooray" I hear it so many times and still don't know what it is! I'm not talking about the warning sound. Again at 2:54 btw. Edit: Think it's the fishing boats finish production.
Goddamn, Teal must've took all the map's resources, they just kept on coming with wrecking crews. Great run though, and I hope one day Empire Earth Gold will get a remaster, I miss that game.
3:18 oh this music is so nostalgic! 💜 I loved this game as a kid! 12:48 another one of my favourites! (although I still prefer the original soundtrack)
As someone who loved playing the original AOE but never ever played it well, this is amazing watching you play! I'll record a commentary reaction to this soon. Thanks for inspiring me with your gameplay. I learned a lot from watching you play!
"Finally! We have breached the wall!" (CENTURIONS) "OH GOD NO WE BREACHED THE WALL!" Cyan: "Those towers are gonna fall soon and then Blue is ALL MINE! They obviously have NOTHING LEFT, unless they have some kind of massive force navigating around the map MERCILESSLY MULCHING my allies that will attack us from the rear, but that would be PREPOSTEROUS!"
They have added a number of QoL features and they made the civs a lot more balanced (nerfs to overpowered bonuses and new bonuses for previously weak civs like the Greeks). The pathfinding is still quite poor unfortunately, units still love getting stuck. 😉
Man, I wish they'd give some more love to AoE1. It's my favorite of the three in terms of time period and the last patch for it was a *year* ago. The AI is still bonkers, even on easy, some of the civ bonuses are just dogwater, and the pathfinding is mind-boggling.
I dare you, no, I triple dog dare you to make a similar video, but with Aoe II DE! Go ahead. Make TheViper cry and do something he can't! P.s. For those who don't know, TheViper for many years was regarded as the best AoE II player of all time. For several years, he was the best AoE II player to the point he won every tournament... except for the ones created to see who was the _second_ to best player, ROFL. The reason for my dare is simple, he has given up on his series of beating the hardest AI in AoE II DE after several changes to them removed most, if not all, of the exploits players could use against them.
AI controlled players will tribute other AI players so the latter can attack you faster, the results screen shows massive amounts of resources being given to the persian player (Teal with the war elephants and catapults)
I will try it sometime! Although, I did notice the AI intelligence and agressiveness seems to vary quite a bit depending on luck and map type. On the "Inland" map type they were especially bad, so I went with "Coastal" instead to make it more interesting. For an open map, I can't seem to think of a way to survive if they start attacking as early as in this video (~11 minutes) and you're not able to wall them out. You might have to get lucky and have them start attacking later instead.
@@StuGames I've had the same experience. Last i played all Villagers of all AI players stopped moving in bronze age, just standing around the town center. On hardest AI. That was disappointingly easy. 😂 A good way to defend alot of war elephants are priests. Once they are converted they can help defending the wall.
A little low on the commentary side but all together nice to watch. Apparently the AI don't know how to upgrade ships, thanks for this information because i play AoE 1 definitive too.
truly beautiful -- question: do u use some kind of pathing mod? cause your vills and centurions .. wow. so fluid and they dont get stuck in the farms or obstruct another senselessly. + if you could make a game against monk civs on hard - would be cool. ai conversion is a whole new world.
Also how do you counter elephants? My experience in the game is fairly limited but some AIs seem to build only elephants and I have no idea how to take them down; they're just so tanky.
Wololo! That is, priests spring to mind, as they can convert the slow and expensive elephants. Any ranged unit with a faster move speed (which isn't hard, moving faster than elephants in this game) can kite them around forever I reckon. Like chariot archers, which also have the benefit of not costing any gold. Mind you, I don't know how the game is played at competitive levels, but using general knowledge of the game and RTS's, this makes sense to me :)
Aside from priests and heavy barrages of long distance fire, centurions can destroy them fast, specially since greek centurions cost about a 1/3rd of a war elephant.
I played through the first campaign recently but to be honest I wasn't terribly impressed. My biggest issue with AoE 4 (as well as 3) is that you can't increase the game speed like in 1 and 2, so the gameplay is fairly slow.
Centurions getting their orders like, "You 20 men are going west to pillage and have fun. You other 3 are going east, and it was nice knowing you."

"You, spearman, go attack that wall"
"The wall with the 15 guard towers defending it? But sir, I will surely die?!"
"Thank you for your service"
It's not very difficult... you just have to do everything perfect and you will be fine !
Awesome video and awesome game !
"Common guys, that gonna be easy, what can he do against all 7 of us"
Since it's 7 v1, instead of attacking in a wave, we will attack separately, in single file and give him time to rebuild and recover.. 🙄🤦🏻♂️
AOE1 content now? Awesome. I return to AOE1 sometimes just for some simple AI matches and it still remands fun.
The game that got me into RTS games. I remember downloading the 25mb trial version. Took all day on dial up. Worth it.
How can you be THIS GOOD at so many games?!!?
Our mere mortal minds cannot begin to comprehend Stu's skill level.

The atmosphere in AOE 1 is unrivaled by any other AOE game !
ayoyo! wololo!
I think the original aoe 2 had a good claim
In my country, Vietnam, we still play AOE1 version 1997. And I can proudly say that we are very good at this game, may be no1 in the world :D .

A lot of Teal's resources were actually tributed by his allies, when you look at the end screens.

First time I EVER saw AOE1. Had to look at the description to recognize it (thought it would be Age of Mythology)
A true classic. Unforunately not that many people play it today! Although I hear it's still big in Vietnam.
I believe they're making an age of mythology remaster .
Nice work. First high level aoe1 game I've watched, cheers!
Can't wait for AOE Fight Club
Just wanna see a massive villager macro with all their elephant femur clubs
Cyan was attacking like you owe him money
Always wondered what it would be like if Alexander played age of empires...now I know...the exact same thing that happened in his time hahaha

AoE 2: DE speedruns would be good content to make. The quality and breadth of existing AoE2: DE speedruns on UA-cam varies a lot.
