No Tenzin isn't named after Aangs role model Monk Gyatso. Many parts of Avatar are taken straight from real life Tibet. Dalai Lama is the titel of Tenzin Gyatso (the 14th Dalai Lama) he is said to be a reincarnation of the 13th Dalai Lama Thubten Gyatso. Among other things that made Tenzin Gyatso the current Dalai Lama is that he as a kid pointed out stuff that was previously possesed by the 13th Dalai Lama, just like Aang in the series picked out toys from previous Avatars.
Yes Exactly. As a tibetan and bhuddist kid, growing up and watching avatar and seeing the “air nation” felt like looking into my own culture.. except we control air.
On one hand... His death could have lead to some damn brutal plot points (Pema becoming a single-mom, the kids losing their father, Jinora stepping up as the only air bending master way too early (the ceremony would have been CRUSHING), maybe Lin becoming the air-nation protector (because that kinda slapped in s1, ngl), Kya and Bumi losing their youngest sibling and now struggling with keeping a culture alive, they never bothered with, etc.). It would have been very interesting and for Korra that would be just another shovel of guilt, because the Red Lotus only targeted the air nomads bc of her. On the other hand, his sacrifice would have been almost inconsequential. He fought to give the rest a running chance. They were still captured (not Kai, little, brave, stupid boii) and used as hostages. He would have dled for nothing, which is heart-wrenching, but very hard to stomach as far as sacrifices go. But its not the biggest, and also the reason the whole 'great grandfather thing' for the Zuko family thing is not right. Basically the production team completely screwed up because there is no way Roku and Sozin can be Zuko and Azula's great grandfathers. Let me explain: Both Roku and Sozin were in their 70's when Roku died. And Aang was born right after that. And as we all know Sozin began the 100 year war 12 years later, which would put him in his 90's. And apparently, Azulon (Ozai and Iroh's father) was apparently born the same year Sozin killed off the Air Nomads. Heres the thing: women can only bear children between the onset of their first period to their mid to late 40's when menopause hits; in rare cases early 50's. Meaning that Azulon's mother, Sozin's wife, was at least half his age when she had him; no older than her 40's. Roku's side of the family makes even less sense since apparently Ursa's mom was Roku's daughter; sorry but thats impossible. Roku and his wife were about the same age and again, in their 70's when Roku died. Meaning she was well past her childbearing years. And even if they did have a daughter right before his wife hit menopause, she would of been in her 30's when her father died, and in her 40's or early 50's when the war began. Now Ozai and Ursa were in their 40's at the time the show takes place. Meaning that, if Roku's daughter is supposed to be Ursa's mom, she would of had to be 70's or 80's when Ursa was born.
