  • In this video I show images and video clips taken of Green Woodpeckers, photographed at both my hide near Colchester , as well as my older hide near Ipswich. All the video and images in the first part of the video are taken using the OM1, and the Olympus 150-400mm lens. In the second part of the video, I was using the EM1mkII and the 40-150mm F2.8 plus the MC 14 converter. I show how shooting at ground level can give a more natural and pleasing result. I also demonstrate the use of the low level opening on my hide.
    Bird Paste Recipe :
    1 Cheap supermarket white sliced loaf, I block of lard, 1 pint boiling water, I cup full of mixed bird seed. All mixed well together and rolled in to balls to fit in a fat ball feeder.
    Music in the Video is from royaly free music at : www.bensound.com

    Title : Once Again

    Roger: Another excellent video. I was particularly pleased to hear that you were able to print a cropped image with your OM1 without image quality degradation. PJI

    Wow, I didn't know the green woodpeckers would feed on apples, too! Thank you for the video.
    As for crops, I think it's the light that makes the crop, no matter the camera. In good light with good micro-contrast, it's quite astonishing what one can get away with. In dull, flat light with high ISO, a full frame camera might have a tiny little advantage, but it won't look as good, either.

    • @rogerhance5883
      @rogerhance5883  Рік тому +1

      Thanks for the comment. I didnt know `Greenies` ate apples either, but they obviously like them if they are soft enough. I agree about the light. In decent light it is a lot easier to crop heavily.

    I loved this video Roger. Such beautiful birds and great info as always. I'm always a bit wary about cropping and I found your comments on that to be of particular interest. Thanks for your effort.

      @rogerhance5883  Рік тому

      Thanks you Stephen. Gald you liked the video. I think that it can become an issue if you are cropping from a picture taken in very dull light. Then the noise is more evident. Although these were shot at ISO 1600, the bright light meant I could crop quite heavily and still get good quality.

    Great video Roger. Your blind has really gotten my attention, it is really awesome. Is this yours on your own property or a community type thing? As some background, I stumbled onto your channel after I decided to get back into photography (as a hobby) and just got myself the new OM Systems OM-1 camera for Christmas. I bought the OM-1 Kit with the camera and the Zuiko 12-40mm f2.8 Pro lens. I also purchased a Zuiko 40-150mm f2.8 Pro, Zuiko 60mm f2.8 Macro and a Zuiko 75mm f1.8 lenses. Although we live in an urban area in Central Ohio, USA, we still have many birds and squirrels, as well as some eagles. I bought an original Olympus OM-1n in 1978 and used that camera for a small wedding/portrait side-line business I ran from home from 1978 to around 1986. I just retired this past August, after 26+ years as a concrete mixer driver and look forward to some scenic e-bike rides and photo/ video oppurtunities when the weather gets better. Thanks for all the info you have given me, Charlie

      Thanks for the kind comment. The hide is on private land, so there is not problem with it being disturbed or vandalised. I do occassionally take friends over to photograph there. I asked the owner of the land if I could photograph some of the birds in the orchard, and he is quite happy for me to do this providing I supply him with a few pictures. He is quite interested to see the number of birds that come in. I built the hide myself, and although I woulkd not get a job as a carpenter, it is faitly strong and does the job. Once aagin, thanks for the kind comment.

    Stunning footage as per usual + some helpful tips! Have been dreaming of getting this colorful species for years now. No success though. Any tips on where to look for them, by any chance, Roger? I've heard they like anthills but never seen a woodpecker in the vicinity of one.

    • @rogerhance5883
      @rogerhance5883  Рік тому +1

      Thanks for the very kind comment. They do like ant hills, but you have to find one they are feeding at, and then get a hide close enough. If you can find someone who has a lawn where they have a lot of ants, Green Woodpecker are reasonably easy to photograph. I have never had a Green Woodpecker on my lawn in the 40 odd years I have live here. But a friend of mine in Clacton has they come on his lawn quite regularly.

    • @rogerhance5883
      @rogerhance5883  Рік тому +1

      Thanks. I was lucky that it came in so close. The fact that the hide has been there a while means they are quite used to it.

    Enjoyed the video! However, surprised to see that you do not use (when in the lower elevation in the hide) the swivel screen and angle it 45 degrees ?

    • @rogerhance5883
      @rogerhance5883  Рік тому

      Glad you liked the video. I do sometimes use the flip out/swivel screen to the side of the camera, but because I am sittingfairly low down anyway, I find just looking on the back of the camera just as easy. If I was taking pictures from a stand up or kneeling position, I would definately flip out the scree and tilt it.

    Hi Roger, really enjoying watching your videos, I'm considering getting the om1, just a couple of questions, I am looking for a camera that works well in low light as I get lots of opportunities to photograph barn owls and like to do video, would the om1 do the job. Look forward to your next video. Best Wishes David.

    Very nice subscribed, I am also thinking about buying the OM-1 and the 150-400mm, Have you switched from another brand to Olympus? if so how does it compare? The only thing that is stopping me is the tiny sensor as I have the Nikon Z9.

    • @rogerhance5883
      @rogerhance5883  Рік тому +1

      Thanks for the kind comment. I changed from full frame Canon to Olympus, and do not regret it at all. The quality that I can get from thr OM1 is fine for me, and I regularly make A3 prints from the files. In very low light, a full frame camera will beat a M4T camera, because of the sheer size of the files, but I regularly shoot at ISO 2000, 2500, 3200, and 4000, and the quality, even at these ISO`s is very good.
