  • In this video we explore the energy content of different feeds and what it might mean for sheep. A 50kg ewe requires around 8700kJ of metabolisable energy in its diet to maintain weight. This is exactly the same as the average maintenance requirement of a human. We normally talk metabolisable energy or ME in terms of megajoules (MJ). We have calculated the weight of various feeds required to deliver 8.7MJ to demonstrate the big differences that exist. We talk through lupins, barley, oaten hay, green pasture and dry pasture as a few of the options available.
