This weekend, we got our first wethers. 3 of them. They were raised by horse ranch owners who fed alfalfa hay. So, we got a 3 string of NM alfalfa but plan to switch them slowly to what is called Sudan hay. They also like leaves, twigs and branch bits from several trees in our yard. They never saw goat minerals until my house but I have seen them sample the minerals and the baking soda already. I bought a bag of goat treats but will wait to give them any. Reward is attention for now.
    4 months later-
Our 3 boys love Orchard Mix hay best but it is not widely available here. Rare treats they like best: raisins, craisins, cracking peanuts to share together. We never grain; however, they sometimes locate spilled birdseed under feeders. Only one of the three eat banana peel though. Sliced thin bits of apple and pear are loved by all.

If your goat-treats (called 4-way) have molassas give very sparingly 1/4 for pygmy to 1/2 cup for Nubian or Boar. Our goat eats carrots, broccoli, blueberries,
raisins (ever so often), alfalfa hay every day, goat minerals (every day). I accidentally dropped a peeled banana and she ate it up. Ours is a house goat so
she'll stare us down daggers if we have chips or crackers which we rarely share. People food not good.

(No goats yet. Doing research.) I could have pasture year 'round but will there be any nutritional value left in the forage then? We have lots of warm winter days in Colorado and I hope when I get goats I can put them out in pasture year 'round all around the yard, during the day, and then move them back to shelter permanent fenced area at night. You said hay should be the primary food source... but if they could forage would that be better? We have 5 acres of very steep slopes and I will get maybe 3 small wethers. Are there certain weeds and plants that certain types of goats prefer? I will keep reading.

    • @DelcifromALifeofHeritage
      @DelcifromALifeofHeritage  10 місяців тому +1

If they can be on your around forage, that would be great! Just keep a watch that they are content, and that they aren’t grubbing out certain areas more than others, because that can cause more problems with worms just because they’re eating closer to the ground.

Very interesting and informative. Question, feeding alfalfa, I would think that 1st cutting would be best, as it is new growth and should be more tender and slender. The stocks wouldn't be as large and seems they would eat the new growth better. What is your opinion? I don't have goats yet, but hope to get some this summer. Drought took all my pasture last year, so I have no pasture will most likely be feeding in a lot. Thank you.

I have a question about pasture.. does a green pasture versus a dry yellow pasture does it Still give adequate feed to Goats ? I have a access to 10 acres of different types of weeds grasses that they Grazie year round the only thing is I don’t know if they’re nutritional value is sufficient in the summer when it’s triple digits in the crop is quite dry.(field isn’t irrigated)I’ve always supplemented with hay but just wondering if I could depend solely on my pasture? I have bigger alpine/boer/kiko cross weathers does and kids Thank you!!

"Goats eat everything" is an old belief. :) My old Greek/Egyptian father believed it, perhaps more so than most of my fellow Brits. But once I read a book on space exploration. The author, Robert Zubrin, wrote that he'd once read a book which recommended the use of goats in colonizing other planets. Zubrin's comment on this went something like, "I grew up in the city, but now I live in the countryside where my neighbors have goats. They escape occasionally, so I have a little experience with them. Don't let a goat near your kevlar dome, it'll eat it." That makes me laugh! But somewhere else I read that goats like not to eat but to taste everything. That might explain the belief and Zubrin's experience, especially if goats perhaps take a liking to some tastes which aren't actually food. Oh and minerals... I wouldn't be surprised if goats were sometimes kept without adequate minerals, and so tried to eat anything which tasted like it might have a little bit of the minerals they need. I know my eating habits get pretty wild after a phase of not eating a balanced diet.

    Trees weeds and sunchokes lol
They like my sweet potato peelings and now i know who gets my banana peelings :)
    Thanks this was helpful
The people who sold me my goats gave me some sweet feed with them and minerals but never said anything about baking soda and ive heard this before in preventing bloat
I love your idea for Mineral feeders and you could attach them to a wall easily with a screw or two lol
I put out some minerals and they stepped in the dish and kicked it all over lol
So i will try your idea and attach them in a way i can take them down to wash them if necessary
I heard chicken feed is not good either like laying mash type has the wrong nutrients high calcium this way is bad but the scratch grains i give my chickens is just wheat barley and oats i believe its just whole grains so this should be ok in small amounts
My thoughts was to get rid of the sweet feed and give them some grain and add sweet treats like sweet potato peelings banana peelings apples carrots etc what ever sweet veggies i have on hand and fruit
And ruffage like hay, weeds, trees etc...
I usually give grain in the morning and follow it with the weeds and grasses i pull from the garden

    • @DelcifromALifeofHeritage
      @DelcifromALifeofHeritage  3 роки тому

They are essentially alfalfa hay in pelleted form... the one problem with wethers is that they don't need alfalfa. It has such a high calcium content and that can cause issues with other deficiencies like zinc. If you have access to grass hay pellets that would be great! Good question!

ever thought outside the box on winter feed and protein sources other than grain? in ancient times Arabic Bedouins often fed their horses dried locust and honey and camel's milk to drink in the desert. in Asian countries where insects are delicacies for human consumption here in the states the Black Soldier fly in 47% protein, the adults are fed a clean diet of honey and oatmeal, fruits/vegies leftovers and in last stage before pupae stage to adult is pan fried/dried and coated with molasses or honey and fed to all farm animals with or without coatings (chickens all fowls can eat live) but also the larvae are dried milled into pellets, bagged and fed like a grain to animals. grasses for winter or all year can be done by growing different grains in fodder trays...barley is mostly number one, but winter wheat, alfalfa, timothy grass etc. can be fresh all year or dried for roughage for rabbits, goats, cattle....

My new wether ate the label off his feed bin, and nothing inside.
We let him roam the yard, and even tho he has refused all grain, hay, pellets, treats, veggies he got a bag of empty chicken feed and ran like heck with it so he could chew it before I got it away from him.
He ate the fake flowers from a memorial yard display, but refused any real flowers on our walk. He chose to eat cats claw (thorny) and a small latex producing plant. Nigerian dwarf.

I use these for my adult goats: www.amazon.com/UltraCruz-Copper-Bolus-Supplement-Adults/dp/B07TQ9B8H3
      And one Bolus per goat.
It will really depend on your area and how bad their deficiency is. It’s hard to say. Some areas and goats only need one a year while others need 4 a year. Start with one and watch for improvements. Take before pictures so you can compare after several months.
I buy the goat mineral from our local feed store. It’s formulated specifically for goats. So when you buy some make sure it’s “for goats” and not “for sheep and goats”.

A new water source can affect how a goat drinks. It may taste or smell different from what they are used to. You can add some vinegar to the water. This may help make the water taste better and encourage them to drink. My experience is that they will get thirsty and will start drinking but adding some vinegar will help.

You want your goats main food source to be a source of grass/broad-leaf foods or a hay source. Supplementing with grain products is good for pregnant, and lactating does, bucks in rut, elderly goats and growing kids. as long as it's not more than 1.5 pounds a day for the adults. And be sure to make changes to their diet slowly. Feed the grain in the morning (they can more easily get sick if they overload before night fall).

@@geaj4214 it’s really important that they get 20% of their weight in milk a day into their third month. Divide that up into small portions during the day.
Put the nipple in their mouth (they will resist) but don’t give up. It may sit there and they do nothing with it but slowly move it in and out of their mouth (without taking it completely out) and gently run your hand under their neck to help give them a swallow reflex.
It’s hard for kids to transition from mom to nipple but it can be done. Be patient.

Sounds like they have a lot of variety! That’s great!
Just hopefully it’s not your prized flowers and lettuce 😉
Because that’s happened to me a time or two 🤦‍♀️😂

What about steam rolled barley? I always thought that was a natural product. I Just buried a lovely British Alpine doe today. Dead from worms, I think.

I'm so sorry. It is so important to check for worms regularly. The most important thing to feed your goat is hay or pasture. That will be their main source of income. A high diet of grain can cause problems. But I've feed my goats rolled barley and they love it. I would feed it to my goats in milk. But do make sure they are getting their main source of food from hay. And check their poop under a microscope to find out if they have worm eggs and worm if necessary.

@@DelcifromALifeofHeritage I soak whole barley in with copper sulphate and apple cider vinegar. The copper is supposed to control worms and has done so for years. But when she went off her feed I should have got her to a vet.

I supply my goats with minerals and baking soda but I have yet to ever see them touch it.

They may not need it! I trust my goats to get what they need, when they need it.

It should be fine in moderation :) Especially if they have been eating them and not having any problems. Of course, it shouldn't be their main food source though. 😊

Don’t forget that most small youtubers don’t have the money to invest in equipment at first and are just learning to navigate how to use the editing software to manually raise the volume after its recorded.
