- Join The Royal Ballet as they rehearse Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. Find out more at www.roh.org.uk/alice
As well as sections featuring the cast being coached through sections of Christopher Wheeldon's modern classic, the livestream will also offer a closer look at the many props and puppets that bring Wonderland to life. The event will be presented by Royal Ballet Principal Alexander Campbell.
Christopher Wheeldon’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland burst onto the stage in 2011 in an explosion of colour, stage magic and inventive, sophisticated choreography. Joby Talbot’s score combines contemporary soundworlds with sweeping melodies that gesture to ballet scores of the 19th century. Bob Crowley’s wildly imaginative, eye-popping designs draw on everything from puppetry to projections to make Wonderland wonderfully real.
Alice encounters a cast of extraordinary and instantly recognizable characters, from the highly strung Queen of Hearts - who performs a hilarious send-up of The Sleeping Beauty’s famous Rose Adage - to a playing card corps de ballet, a sinuous caterpillar and a tap-dancing Mad Hatter. But the ballet does not avoid the darker undercurrents of Lewis Carroll’s story: a nightmarish kitchen, an eerily disembodied Cheshire Cat and the unhinged tea party are all here in vivid detail. The delicious result shows The Royal Ballet at its best, bringing together world-class dance with enchanting family entertainment. - Розваги
i loved how the dancer with the red tshirt made the hatter more crazy/mad and the dancer with the black tshirt made it more misterious!
Having two Mad Tappers rehearse at the same time was such a clever idea because it allowed Christopher Saunders to correct both dancers and it gave the audience (and UA-cam viewers, of course) the treat of watching two different interpretations of the character at once.
Michelle Arendt more the merrier!
the mad hatter tap dance part is brilliant! i just want them to keep dancing forever. haha
The Mad Hatter dancer with the red shirt (didn't catch his name) is so expressive with his movements! He sells the Mad Hatter vibe without being in costume! Both are great but I couldn't take my eyes off the guy in the red shirt. :)
Same, I love his dancing and performing, his name is Joseph Sissens ❤️
I
for me it was the other one :)
His body line is much more extended than the guy in black shirt, his line flows nicely too.
Omg yes but I think it was also b/c he hadn’t practiced with the hat so he wasn’t as wary as the other guy. Not that the guy in black was stiff or anything, he was great too!
It is SOOOOOO satisfying to hear only one tap, sound even when both are tapping😍
The synchronization is PERFECT
I think the Hatter is my favorite dancing character of all time. These guys are brilliant.
homeiswonderland mine is the caterpillar although he wasnt shown.
i love watching the two interpretations of the mad tappers! so nice to see them side by side. i dont do dance, i just love watching it. and i have absolutely no idea the black guy’s name. but i love him! he seems so brazen and bold the way he does the mad hatter, while the other is sly. this is just an outsider’s perspective. i like it.
He is Joseph Sissens, and the sly one Calvin Richardson!
they are couple😛😛
Christopher Saunders is brilliant in helping the audience along and explaining it all so nicely!
MmeNemours I also loved him in the Romeo and Juliet rehearsal. I strongly recommend watching it! By the way Campbell is also dancing there (not only talking). That was the first Royal Ballet rehearsal I've ever seen.
Absolutely check out the others!! They're as good as the ballets
It's kind of comforting to know that the pro's mess up too.
The two interpretations of the hatter are so different and it’s so refreshing 😍
Would love to see this ballet in person... I have been watching all the videos of rehearsal and its fabulous....
The amount of detail Christopher notices is amazing!
Right especially when he noticed the sickle foot
Beatriz Stix-Brunel is as wonderfully articulate about her art as she is performing her art. And wickedly funny.
Edited to just add, many thanks to the ROH and RB, the dancers and everyone for doing these live streamed rehearsals. They are so fascinating. Brilliant for us punters to gain some insight into the processes involved, and to to admire the sheer hard work and skill that goes into these masterpieces. Many, many thanks.
seeing 2 hatters at once was so exciting!! steven mcrae will always be my favourite but i absolutely love how unique they can be doing the same routine
McCrae left huge taps to fill. He really owned that character.
If only I lived in England!!
On Okt 23 it will be livestreamd in cinema's around the world. Check your local cinema's for info.
They only do it in Canada and other European countries
Literally what I was thinking. I’d love to see a performance in London one day
I live in England, although not London
i love Alex as a presenter, but i would love to see him dancing more. he's one of the best
mariana correa Agreed- I adore Alex & any/all airtime/stagetime he gets- he’s unbelievably talented & so very charming. ❤️👏😊
Can you imagine being a principal who is having to rehearse in front of a group of strangers (not just in studio, but on the internet) and being called-out for sickled feet?! I would have sunk into the earth with embarrassment. She must have nerves of steel.
SmittenKitten is Beatrix a principal?
They're used to constructive criticism. And his delivery wasn't very harsh. I feel as professionals, they have to have nerves of steel/thick skin. It's about overall aesthetic so I feel like emotions have to put aside. I used to take criticism a little like you suggested, but I grew out of it because I'd prefer to be told to correct something than affect the presentation of the performance or myself!
Meanwhile kids are dying in Africa...
Hahaha, dramatic much? You get corrected all the time as a dancer so this is not a big deal. It's part of the job. Just because you're a principal doesn't mean you're perfect, which is why you need rehearsals and such so that you can get feedback. You must be really sensitive or grew up having no one give you any criticism if you thought that was bad lol.
xoPrimrose yep
48:39 those lemon drops (if I remember the correct term) are crazy, crap that man with the red shirt has strong ankles. I loved doing these when I danced however I couldn’t ever sustain one like that.
the tap dancing was incredible! total fan.
The man in the red shirt really brings the character of the mad hatter alive, absolutely incredible 😍
wow, the bit where the tail comes out is so cleverly choreographed! the dancer moves incredibly well, making it seem like it is really happening. it also really helped that christopher was explaining every move... really well done!
Paul's the real hero here
Totally, the pianists never get enough credit!
I really enjoyed Joseph Sissens dancing, couldn't take my eyes off him. Can't wait to see him performing :)
Lolly LuLa Was he the guy in the red shirt as the Hatter? Because YES. He was brilliant.
That's right Lauren, he is the guy in the red shirt as the Mad Hatter. Love his dancing :)
I honestly thought I was the only one!
I agree! Magnificent !!
Lolly LuLa I
Is anyone else only seeing a purple screen with the title on it?? Is this video no longer accessible??
23:07 love how all the men rest like that, it's really funny!
I'd love to be a prop maker. It looks like the most fulfilling job
please tell me you are making this happen? 😊
This is my favorite rehearsal I've watched so far. The tap dancing was awesome and I loveee learning about the stage props. I wish I could see the full performance!
Mr. Campbell did an excellent job presenting this exciting program. Thanks!
40:50 wow the boys did absolutely amazing!!!
Beatrix is absolutely gorgeous! Joseph Sissens, very talented, reminds me of Savion Glover!
Darrius Legrand Beatrix is my sister
It's nice to see that you're proud of her. She's a real talent blooming to its best right now.
Congratulations! she is fantastic dancer and artist!!!!
I wish I could have seen her do Princess Rose in Prince of the Pagodas...
ItsFunneh funny how you don't know how to spell your sister's name...
Noting that this is rehearsal, and not a performance, both of the Mad Hatters are beautiful dancers with exquisite technique! Wow!
It is exceedingly rare for classically trained, ballet dancers to also be excellent tappers, and both Richards and Sissens are masterful! In terms of embodiment of style, acting and character dancing, I can’t take my eyes off the brilliant Joseph Sissens who strikes me as a genuine “hoofer” a la Kelly, Astaire, the Nicholas Brothers, Donald O’Conner, Gene Nelson, Gregory Hines and Savion Glover, to name just a few! With delicious specificity, Mr. Sissens frees up his entire body to evoke the silly, short attention span, and quizzical, passive-aggressiveness of the Mad Hatter, aware of and taking relish in his feet as they tap out riddles that not only confound Alice, but himself! An intuitive character actor, Sissens’ Hatter calls to mind Leonide Massine’s Shoemaker from the Red Shoes.
I am curious: Based on the rehearsal feedback, and Mr. Richards’ technical precision (perhaps a posh expression of the Hatter’s etiquette?), I have a sense that, as of this taping, only Mr. Richards had actually performed the role with his actual hat, on the actual, elevated and spatially limited platform! I’d be thrilled to be able to enjoy both interpretations in live performances by these gifted performers.
This behind the scenes series with live rehearsals, and discussions with Creatives and master craftspersons is BRILLIANT! Do you have more “Alice...” segments like this with the Caterpillar and The Red Queen? I’d love to see more! Thank you so much!
i loved how both hatters had different styles of doing the same dance. i loved watching them both
Not only is Beatriz one of my favourite young dancers, but she's incredibly smart, articulate and funny! I hope I can be like her one day 💕
I love how the red T-shirt dancer makes it look like he’s in a cartoon he is fabulous and also the black T-shirt boy as well he makes it more casual but I still love his twist
4:48 that guy’s smile tho. Although his face is blurred, his smile just lights up my whole day
The “wheeldon slide” seems so difficult
LOOOVE these rehearsal videos. When it's all put together it's such a masterpiece to watch, with the costumes and pageantry, but often the intricacies of the choreography can get lost when there's so much going on. Being able to see the fine tuning of each step (probably because it takes me back to dance class, lol) is such a treat!!
Yes!
I love when you guys put together these rehearsal videos. It’s fascinating to watch and makes me want to go to see the performances all the more! Thank you so much
What a treat to watch this rehearsal. They are fantastic dancers; she is so graceful and dances so beautiful; she reminds me of a graceful swan.
Oooo! I love Alex Campbell! Wish they'd rehearsed him doing Mad Hatter! :)
ua-cam.com/video/8hud8u5Kp7w/v-deo.html
Here he is rehearsing it (although a few years ago now) :)
It looks si beautiful, I've only I had the money and opportunity to go and see it live, Alice in wonderland is my favorite book ever!!! And this looks so magical CONGRATULATIONS!!!
The tapping was exquisite!
I love it when the instructor can actually demonstrate what they mean.
The Royal Ballet IS THE BEST IN The World !!! Always with a lot of love and light Your eternal fan Nadya Mirkova and all my big family and all my friends from Sofia - Bulgaria - Europe and all World !!!
For anyone watching this recently, does the video not match the audio at all? Like it doesn't match up with the video for at least 10 minutes? I really want to watch the Mad Hatter rehearsal again, but there's no audio because the audio ends before the video ends. If I watch the video without scrubbing, it just displays the poster and no footage. Can someone help?
This has been happening to me too, some saved rehearsals just dont match the audio!
It helped me to watch on a different device. Idk about you though
Aww bless you can hear how nervous the presenter was. You can hear his voice quivering 🥺
Saw this last year on Fathom Events. Such a fantastical work! Love love love this! 😍
I love the music of this ballet, Talbot rock it !
I do really enjoy your job. This is a good school for the public to enjoy ballet performances
Thank you
I couldn't fall asleep, and have been unfortunately putting off watching this do to a busy schedule during the day...so good thing is I got to finally watch! and WOW. Beaming from ear to ear. So lovely!
I can’t fall asleep because I keep watching ballet rehearsal videos. February 21, 2021, 6:45am, Dallas Texas. I have to turn off my phone!!😆
I LOVE the mad hatter part SO MUCH
I totally love this. Brilliant rehearsal.
Red shirt hatter is divine. And so is black shirt but red shirt really stood out
Why would anyone thumbs down this video is perfection
This is bloody Brilliant!! About time they did some thing fresh!
Alex Campbell is doing an excellent job! I am just loving the video!
I'd love to watch this life, what a gorgeous piece!
Would have loved to see it live but no electricity due to hurricane Irma. Grateful to see a replay now.
Those props are gorgeous. Wish I could see this production at the royal opera theater!
I love beatrix, she's so cute and expressive and fit so perfectly as alice
I just love watching these !
Please broadcast this live in the USA, please!!!!
HELL YEAH THIS IS MY FAVORITE BALLET😩❤️
The music by Joby Talbot is wonderful.
Such a treat. Thank you 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Love this so much 😭💕
Well, I forgot to subscribe to this channel and missed the live stream, but still it was really enjoyable and I'm looking very much forward to seeing it either in cinema or on dvd.
This looks like a cool ballet show to watch!
Joseph Sissens' mad hatter dance was great. The other guy dancing with him seemed a tad lost in some of the choreography. Sissens also presents the taps real well. Anyone know if he ended up performing the role ever with the Royal Ballet?
James and Beatrice are so cute!
ENDLESS THANK You !!! GOD BLESS You !!! GOD BLESS Your DIVINE TALENTS !!! We - ALL Bulgarians LOVE, VERY LOVE BALLET !!! IN BULGARIA HAVE FANTASTIC BALLET !!! I LOVE You ENDLESS !!! Your eternal fan Nadya Mirkova from Sofia - Bulgaria
Glorious Dance!! Great Dancers!!
I see three mad hatters!
How lovely to see them all connecting with such a role
I went to watch that yesterday and it was stunning and very creative
The man with the black shirt is marvellous. His every move is so attractive!
Great to watch !
I love Alex
I like beatrix as alice FAR more than sarah lamb
This looks like fun!
Greetings from 2020 during COVID quarentine from El Salvador!
Dang I want to dance pointe like Beatrice and tap like the Mad Hatter(s)!!!!!!! Loved watching this so much!!!!!!!!
Beatrix is such an explosion of grace here. I only wish I had the words to properly express my appreciation for her marvelous talent. She's every bit a First Soloist and then some.
She should have been promoted a principal many years ago …. Now she has gone … What a loss … Perhaps she was clever for the ROH …?
watching from Australia!!
Muchas gracias por su correo , me pareció maravilloso
Espero que siempre estemos en contacto hasta visitarlos nuevamente.
This was incredible! Is there any way to watch the final performance??
I hope it shows up at my local theater!

Rebecca Friedman Joseph and Calvin
I have been in Royal Opera House a year ago with my classmates to watch Alice In Wonderland
this is amazing
Yes yes yes yes yes yessssssssss two of my favourite things Alice’s adventures in Wonderland and dance love 💕
Fascinating!
Wow Calvin and Joseph were absolutely brilliant! That Hatter scene is easily the best thing i saw in ballet (that SYNC LEVEL!!) Is this the same Calvin as the one who rehearsed with Sarah Lamb, previously? i couldn't take my eyes off him.
Thanks richard
Beatriz is wonderfull!!!
How many days/weeks/months was this before opening was this rehearsal? Just curious
“THANK YOU PAUL”
Lol loved that moment! 😂
Did either of the mad hatters actually end up performing in the production? because the only video clips I can find on youtube are of steven mcrae as the mad hatter so I’m a little confused by that.
