So the woman who sang as Moses’ mother, Yocheved, is actually a famous late Israeli singer named Ofra Haza and recorded the song in 17 friggin different languages.

    Lovely reaction!
And since I couldn't see her acknowledged her - Moses' mom, Yocheved, is voiced by the very beloved late Israeli singer Ofra Haza. She was huge here at the 80-90's, and passed away not long after this movie came out. She was crazy talented and voiced this role in multiple languages.

I’m a godless heathen and The Prince of Egypt is one of my favorite movies ever! The music, the animation, the acting, the story, I’ve loved all of it ever since I was little! You can really tell the production team had so much passion when making it and it comes through in the final product. The opening scene gives me chills every time, especially when Jochebed is singing
There was actually a stage adaptation put on I believe in Utah a few years ago and I would pay so much money for a bootleg of it 😆

08:09 "Feels like some Biblical shit, tbh"
Mary Clare, when are you putting this on merch?!?!?
Also hey, since I'm early enough: the actor who voiced Moses (Val Kilmer) was also the primary voice for God to reflect the individualized, personal connection. BUT they also had other actors and actresses from the cast read lines and layered their voices in with Kilmer's to create that otherworldly sound.

I’m an Athiest, but this movie is not only up there as one of my favorites, but has cemented the Exodus story as one of my favorite biblical stories (right behind the one where some Hebrews convince a rival city to circumcise themselves after one of their guys raped one of their girls to weaken them for invasion)

@@sjh3217 it’s been a looong time since I’ve read the Bible. So had to look it up again, but it’s Genesis 34. Basically a neighboring price r@pes one of the Hebrew woman, then tries getting his dad to buy her as a bride. The Hebrews are like “oh yeah we’d love to but our God has a think bout dick skin. You guys get every male in your kingdom to circumcise themselves, then we’ll happily let you marry her.” So the king does, and while everyone is icing their dicks, the Hebrews come in with their army and slaughter the city as revenge.

@@sjh3217 If I remember correctly, it’s the story about the city of Shechem where supposedly the Prince of the city ( or King, I don’t recall ) fell for Dinah - the daughter of Jacob and Leah, kidnapped her and raped her. And then I think later Simeon and Levi, two sons of Jacob, told the Prince that if he wants to marry their sister then him and all the men in the city must be circumcised. And so that came to pass, and on the day the men of the city were circumcised and weakened, Simeon and Levi came in and slaughtered all the men in the city and took their sister back. Jacob disapproved of this slaughter and I think later on when he was very old and near death and blessed his sons, to Simeon and Levi he said something like “Let their anger be far away from me.”

(if you didn’t already) Dreamworks made another movie about Joseph and how the Israelites came into Egypt for this movie, and it’s called Joseph King of Dreams which is also a really really great movie! Being an ardent Catholic Christian myself, I watched this movie with my family this Sunday. My sister didn't want it at first, as she thought it would be a cheap, boring Biblical movie. By the end of the opening she was already crying her heart out at this masterpiece, along with all of us.
8:52 The text doesn't explicitly state Moses knew who he was, as it unknown how long could his mother actually influence him. It would make sense for the Imperial family to sunder him from her as soon as he stopped needing to be breastfed, to avoid Hebrew influence on him. He might have actually not known she was his mother. The movie chooses to avoid this uncertainty and goes all into the idea that he didn't know her, though. Honestly the best choice for the adaptation, and plenty of movies have explored the other direction, so it's not like the full story is untold.
11:07 Again, not explicit. The Bible does state that he did it discreetly and hid the body, unlike the movie, but was reported by the Hebrews themselves. I'd say there's some nice leeway in the text for whether he actually intended to kill the Egyptian, or just to pick up a fight with him and accidentally went too far and killed him.
27:31 Easter and Passover are the same thing. Those two words are the same in every single language except English; for instance, it's _Pascha_ in Latin, hence _Páscoa_ in my native Portuguese, which both religions use indistinctively here in Brazil. So there's no 'cUlTuRaL aPpRoPrIaTiOn' here (which BTW is not a thing; another one of those bizarre concepts the USA made up).
Yours was the best commentary I've seen on this movie so far. Thank you for following along the text in Scripture and giving enlightening insight on the adaptation; that is particularly important for those who haven't read, or don't readily remember, the Exodus.
    God bless you!

I personally think this movie is the best of the traditional 2D animation that Dreamworks did. Everything is gorgeous in this movie and I hope I'm not the only one to think Dreamworks was YEARS in advance in their animations compared to Disney.
9:30 sometimes for me, a music will mark me in an emotional way. A very simple example is "What a wonderful world" by Louis Armstrong, this version specifically makes me feel sad because it was the song played at my grandpa's funeral. Just thinking about it makes me tear up rn.

    1) The movie shows (and you can see from the hairstyles) that Moses knows he's a Hebrew, but doesn't know his family well enough to recognize them as adults, which is what you'd expect from someone who was raised by his family for the first 2-6 years of his life, which is the range for weaning. Somewhere between age 5 and age 7, most children go through a significant neural pruning, and in that process most people loose the bulk of their episodic memory prior to that point.
    2) In Ancient Egypt (as in a number of "divine" dynasties), It was fairly common for Pharoah's daughters to be married to Pharoah's sons, as they carried divine blood and therefore anyone outside the royal family would be beneath them. So it is entirely appropriate for Pharaoh's daughter to also be a Pharaoh's wife.
    3) The Bible doesn't specify the name of the Pharoah, but many historians had postulated that Rameses II was the Pharaoh faced by Moses. Where archaeologists and the movie diverge is that it is more commonly thought that the Hebrews were making bricks to build two inland trade cities rather than pyramids.
    4) I'm pretty sure God HAS spoken to me that clearly... yeah, it's amazing. Also, it's abosolutely it's not gentle parenting. I'm pretty sure it's because nothing short of a giant red cartoon hammer gets through my thick skull. I mean, it's gentle when it can be, but when those intense experiences happen, it's rarely one of those times, so the gentleness always comes after I've reached a point of full submission and acceptance, so... Yeah. Don't be too jealous. I do with everyone could feel that at least once, but I'm pretty sure that once should be enough for most people.
    5) It sucks that people are the casualties, but then when one of the people is claiming to BE a manifestation of one of the divine beings, it's kinda hard to keep the people out of it. And God doesn't waste our pain; The passover narrative, -- like the near-sacrifice of Isaac, the introduction of dualistic apocryphal prophecy from exposure to the Babylonians, and the introduction of the Gospel to the Greeks through Paul's ministry -- was absolutely necessary for Jesus' followers to make sense of the crucifixion and come to see him as fully human and fully divine.

Glad you reacted to this movie. While its not 100% accurate, its still a masterpiece of music and animation.
But just to clarify, it’s absolutely NOT cultural appropriation.
Christians also have the Old Testament as part of the Bible.
The Old Testament is almost entirely a type and shadow of Jesus Christ. We celebrate Passover also because it was a direct foreshadowing of Christ.
The blood of Christ was shed so that we could be forgiven for our sins and saved from hell and be reconciled to God. The Hebrews had to sacrifice a lamb and put the blood over the doors so that death would pass over them.
Jesus is the perfect lamb of God whose blood was shed so we could be saved.
Christians most definitely recognize and celebrate Passover.

"So is the woman that saved him supposed to be Pharoah's wife or his daughter in this adaptation?" I mean, given that it's Ancient Egypt, possibly both. Seti probably married his sister, and his father could have been the one responsible for the drowning of the Hebrew babies. Or Seti could have married his daughter, and therefore she could have been both sister and mother to Rameses. But considering she says to young Rameses "let's go show Pharoah your new baby brother" not "let's go show your father", the ruler then could have been hers/Seti's father.

Does it count as being invited to Passover Seder if Messianic Jews believe that all believers in Christ become part of the tree of Israel? Because if so, I think it'll be just fine...
There are actually observable aspects of Christ in all of the Jewish high holy days. He is after all the fulfillment of God's law personified. I feel it's important to recognize and celebrate Christianity's Jewish roots. Otherwise things stay as they are now where it's basically us versus them, despite us believing in the same God.

I don't know if you knew this; now, I agree, Passover isn't a Christian holiday. However, there was an early branch of Christians for whom Passover was a holiday. They were the Jewish Christians, an early branch that broke off since they still upheld all the Jewish traditions and practices. They believed Christ was the Messiah, but if I remember correctly, they either thought he was the Son of God without adhering to the traditional trinity belief, or they considered him a human prophet, similar to how Muslims believe I forget. Ultimately, they were classified as heretics by many Christians for their practices and views, including the perception of Christ.
Edit: A Jewish Christian movement, for example, was that of the Ebionites in the early Christian era.
2nd edit: Also, for clarification, Jewish Christians are said to be the basis of Christianity before some movements and doctrines within Christianity made it an official religion. Those early Jewish Christians formed a strong link between Christianity and Judaism, upholding Jewish beliefs and traditions. Their view on Christ persisted even as Christianity as a whole moved towards a new path, and the early stages of modern Christian denominations developed, like the early holy orthodox Catholic Church before their eventual split.

So....I'm messianic..and have celebrated the Passover for many years....and as long as you study the Bible and follow the correct practices and rules of the Passover....I don't see why you can't keep it......The Bible literally says if the foreigner residing among you is circumcised, they may also eat the Passover meal....

    • @leahkotlarchyk679
      @leahkotlarchyk679 Рік тому

So, there's a pretty big difference between "eat the Passover meal" and "go home and perform your own Seder". The textual implication of "a foreigner residing among you" is that said foreigner is amongst Jews and sharing in the tradition. Not that the foreigner hears about the tradition and decides the like it and want to keep it. That being said, I do agree with you that its totally fine as long as the correct practices and rules of Pesach are followed. However, I've had a lot of really negative experiences of everyone from Messianics to Catholics representing Passover as a Christian holiday and deleting its heritage from the equation. If you feel that you can celebrate Passover without potential doing that, then go for it.

I do not understand your comment about appropriating Passover. If someone truly believes in celebrating it, how is that appropriation?
It is true that we Christians are not bound by the same Covenant that the Hebrews have with God but it doesn't prohibit us from celebrating it. If you remember it wasn't just Hebrews that put lamb's blood above the door some Egyptians did as well and those who did were spared.🤗
By the way, you do know we observe Passover through Communion, right?

The hardest part about the plagues for me is the text specifically says God hardens Pharaoh’s heart through it. The writers clearly wanted to show that God > Egyptian Gods. Yes the Egyptian magicians could replicate a couple plagues, but here’s the Hebrew God dunking on important cultural things tied to Egypt. For me it really shows God’s cruelty when I’m sure the authors meant it to show his power.

    • @Anti-Alphabet_Mafia

The pharaoh's heart was already hardened. It's not as if God took away his free will. God only completed the process, because he knew the Pharaoh wouldn't give in no matter what.
It's not as if God is cruel. He created life so he can take it and resurrect it.
For us it's murder because we can't resurrect life, but God can. And since christianity is true, we don't really die we just change locations.

@@Anti-Alphabet_Mafia if Pharaoh wasn’t going to be able to be swayed, then his heart wouldn’t have needed more hardening. Now we are definitely coming at this from two different angles. It sounds, to some extent, you believe this story as historical, were as I believe it to be completely mythological. Mythologically it makes sense to keep pushing the plagues. You are showing off, not only is your god is super powerful, but he easily crushes the Egyptian pantheon. Of course you should join this religion.
But going off from a “I believe in this” aspect, it’s just OT version of God kinda being a dick. I mean why 10 plagues? Why not just publicly punish the royal cast, not the individual citizens? Why not start with the 10th plague if he knew for sure that’d work? Obviously there’s no biblical explanation for exactly why, and it’s up to interpretation, but it’s not the black and white story kids books make it out to be. Honestly that’s one of the reasons I still love this movie, cause they show some of the greyed morals in it.

God isn't evil for getting rid of people who got in his way. Just like if a citizen were to get in the way of the police's justice. And it's not as if the regular citizens were innocent. They were all for the slavery, except for a few.
God needed to get his promised people into the promised land to bring forth the promised messiah/lawyer to save on the day of judgement. And if anyone got in the way of God's salvation they got judged on the spot. That doesn't make God a cruel being. Unless you think that criminals are innocent people.

First off, Numbers 9:14... anyone who chooses to observe Passover is permitted to observe Passover, per God.
Second, how can anyone deny a servant of God the right to celebrate His glory? Jesus, His Apostles, and the early church celebrated Passover. Christian tradition may have distanced itself from that, but it is as much a part of our heritage, as a faith, as it is a part of Judaism.

What choices would we have otherwise?? good and better?? What is better if all is good?? Get what I'm saying? We all choose what to label as good or bad as a collective and as an individual. We decide as society what good and bad are but there are always outliers who disagree and the only technical reason that they are wrong is because it goes against what that society decided good and bad were. It's complicated, there are no simple answers though, we can only individually do the absolute best that we can.

It is so refreshing to see a Christian watch this movie and both acknowledge that, while yes, Exodus is a part of the Christian faith, it is ALSO part of the Jewish faith AND that Passover (Pesach) is exclusively a Jewish holiday and that it is not appropriate to take that on without understanding the cultural intricacies involved in its celebration. I cannot tell you the number of exclusionary reactions I've seen of this film in which its Jewish roots weren't even acknowledged in the slightest.
You absolutely did not overstep your bounds here. I felt really happy that you stopped to look up the meaning of the Hebrew to help deepen your understanding and interpretation. You both recognized moments in which you could learn more and shared your own knowledge when appropriate. There's nothing wrong with that :)

I have never celebrated it but this group of friends at my Christian college alma mater that I internally called the "Elite Christians" (because it seems like that's how they see themselves) celebrate it together yearly and it always rubbed me the wrong way. Maybe that was more because they were exclusionary about it and it seemed like just another thing for them to show off how religious they are, but I suppose I shall add the cultural appropriation to the list of why I want to avoid emulating them. Ah, my bitterness towards them does often fade into judgement, and both feelings are not ideal, but nonetheless I am glad you made this point so that I can raise my awareness of it.
