I totally agree - these are some lucky kids! Getting lessons from the (imo) world's best turntablist teacher. I'm sooooo jealous! Much respect to Rob Swift !!
This video made me want to put markers on my dj controller platters and practice this. Even though they don’t rotate on their own so it would be real fucking pointless lol.
Just wanted to say thank you. I finally got my hands on a motorized platter (Rane One) and I tried the backspin and got it! I felt controllers with jogwheels caused me to look at my laptop too much because I had to since the jogwheels don't move. A motorized platter allowed me to have more control over what I was doing.
GREAT JOB KIERSTEN! You are killing it. it's really cool to see your face as it starts kicking. I remember that feeling...when you start falling into that groove. keep up the amazing work. and of course much respect to the Legendary Rob Swift. Jackson Heights represent!
Give it up to Kiersten and @RobSwift! Not many veterans are as humble as you are or want to mentor; share all your knowledge. I started djng 7 years ago as an adult who wanted to finally pursue my passion for mixing music. Soulful House is my fave and of course Hip Hop, Classic, Underground, some mainstream stuff. .RnB, Funk, Soul, Broken Beat, etc. I recall we got into a lil spat about the sync button in a facebook forum lol . I don't knock it still but watched your videos and paid attention to your teachings. I no longer use sync. Have since purchased Cdjs (my main rig) after several small controllers and also the Pioneer PLX 1000 turntables that I'm bringing out to practice on since I've got some forced downtime (til the next gig). Anyway thank you for educating and not just bashing the youngsters who don't know any better or have access to mentors or turntables even. So much respect for you.
Man the patience you have with them is just amazing, I can't imagine what it must be like trying to teach something to a bunch of kids that seems so simple when you've been doing it for years
Rob, you r the man!! Very inspiring. I live in Florida and I am 47. I worked as a DJ half my life in clubs and etc. I had to learn everything myself and by watching other djs. We didnt have UA-cam. I am thinking of switching over to serato but have no clue. Lol. All I have used is vinyl. Wish u lived in Florida. Great videos. Keep up the incredible work!
2:38... after running to the room and practicing the motions, I HAD to try it with the sound before coming back to the video. Then I unpause and get to 5:30 and realize that this procedure IS the backspin... 😱 Let’s GO!!!!!!
I love your dedication my friend, great video, this actually just taught me how to backspin fast, with the way that you just explained it so perfectly. Thanx man, absolutely amazing DJ & teacher, Mad Respex Big Upz, & Mad Love to DJ Rob Swift, & all the DJ's, in learning, & practice, awesome video, thanks guys.....🔥💯👍💪🙏🎶🎛️🌎
is it true that you only have to backspin a record 6 full rotations, to get back to your exact drop or queue point on a record when juggling?? I was watching a DJ grandmaster Flash video, where he would spin a record backwards 6 full rotations, and every time, no matter which hip hop record he's using, it would bring him back to his cue point or drop that he's using on that particular record. And I was watching him do it, and it seemed like it really works. He was saying something about something I had learned about back and Music School, where 90% of hip hop records, both old school and newer stuff sometimes, are usually always in 4:4 measure. So wherever his key or drop was on the record he was talking about, once the section of the record he's using is done playing his sample or beat or whatever, he would then chapter record up six full rotations, and then would be exactly at the start of his cue or drop again. Then he would proceed to doing the same thing on the other record, as well. And I noticed that made things a lot easier when trying to learn how to beat juggle, so I was realistically, and honestly, asking your opinion on this? Thank you. I always enjoy your videos, and I extremely appreciate everything you've done as far as how much you helped me out and everyone I see you helping out, never mind helping people learn how to correctly manipulate records, and also the turntable itself. but yeah man, grandmaster Flash says 6 full rotations on hip hop records, will bring you right back to your original q or drop point on a record. I'm still practicing with my completely modified and decked out reloop spin, with my scratch records, 7-inch records, to practice, learn, and hopefully utilize all the different scratches and skills to coordinate with that. But I do hope to get another turntable again, and I'm still interested in learning all aspects of turntabism, either way, thank you very much. but I was most definitely really hoping to possibly catch some feedback on that six full rotation backwards theory that grandmaster Flash was talking about, thanx brotha...... 👍👊💪🙏😎
My brother. You have taught that young lady real well. And for that, i really salute you. And i would not not mind taking some lesson's from you myself. And i can honestly say, that i am a fan of you & the executioners
most colleges and universities are predominately women in our times now 2019, then Men are in the Military.. or getting high on weed and stuck on stupid.. or they are pimping and pandering, or they are gang banging,.. the colleges have a disproportionate enrollment of mostly females, u can thank Feminism for that. also as far as DEE JAYING class goes, u can thank PARIS HILTON for making it look POSH for women to be DEE JAY'S but . Rob swift is a professional and he will teach and school who ever has an interest in this ART/ SCIENCE known as TURNTABLISM!
I guess I'm behind the times but I thought being a DJ you either had the talent or you didn't. I cant see getting a degree doing tricks on turntables getting you a job at your local radio stations or record companies. Most radio stations want programmers. Earning the title "DJ" comes with time and experience and a drive to be the best!
the "tricks" put emphasis on stuff you would be doing during actual mixing. Especially as a Hip-Hop DJ. Also guys like the x-men, of which Rob is a part of, were more than just dudes who were able to do clean mixes. They made turntables an instrument. You still have to know the records inside and out the same way you would to mix them properly to do turntablist tricks, create intricate beat juggles (Babu's Blind Alley juggle), etc. If you watch more of Rob's videos he does put more emphasis on DJing not just being about scratching a million miles an hour on the "aaaah" sound from Play That Beat. Most stations don't have actual DJs anymore. Unless you run into the odd college mixshow or mixshows on satelite radio
Damn I hope these kids realize how lucky they are to have Rob Swift as their teacher!

This guy is probably the best DJ teacher on the planet!👍🏾👍🏾
Great teaching: high expectation, praise, reward, instruction, modelling = winning learning

Such teaching skills. This is a clinic in practical teaching as well as a lesson in DJing skills.
This has to be the most fire class anyone could take.
I love how super supportive he is for almost 8 minutes then out of nowhere tells her “don’t fuck this up”
Great job boss! The future is bright with instructors like you. Keep up the great work and stay blessed.
