  • Of all the explorations and adventures we have been on, this is probably in the top 5.
Welcome to another video in which we try to find some Wilts and Berks Canal remains. We walk from Wantage to Ardington and find some incredible canal remains.
We probably didn't explain what we meant by the title, but these locks are so far from anywhere that their survival has been assured. No towns for development, no roads, nothing for miles. Perfect!

Excellent video. When they built the M6 in the 1960s, the Lancaster Canal was disused so the built the motorway cutting up bits of the Canal. Near Kendal there are disused parts where you can walk along.

Quite a hike! I admire the stonework and brickwork, and two things impress me: (1) the fact that the route of the canal hasn't been obliterated by development, and (2) that there are public footpaths that (mostly) go where you want to travel.

Always amazes me how much of relics are there to be found in the UK. This canal has seen more years in disuse than it has been opened. And still those amazing things to find. The same in your cities, how many old railway lines are still there to see or at least to point out easy where they have been... Completely unthinkable, here in The Netherlands. We always see fit for the old materials, can use the ground or just don't want the old rubbish laying around... So it is really hard over here to find any of this wonderful items. If humans disappeared tomorrow, not much of our modern civilization would last more than about five thousand years. Yet the Pyramids would still be there. The only thing s that would last from our civilization would be some of the massive stone statues we've made. And they would probably be worshiped as gods by whatever lifeform that replaces us.

I spoke to the branch chair in that area recently. I said that Lock gate has had 110 years nearly of abandonment. It was probably already 30 + years old by then (140), its solid oak felled possibly from a tree that was 200 years old (340), so Shakespeare was writing plays when that tree was an Acorn, but we can still see what's left today! History is amazing
