In regard to Crucial Ballistix kits, you can check if a kit you just bought is dual rank or not before opening it. There is an extension code right next to the part number. Only the part number is advertised, but you can see the extension code on the memory sticks through the packaging without opening it.
    Examples: BL2K16G36C16U4B. *M8FB1* vs BL2K16G36C16U4B. *M16FE1*
That ''8'' and ''16'' is the number of memory chips per stick. (16 = dual rank).
    ''B'' means Micron rev B
    ''E'' means Micron rev E

Knowing what rank each memory kit is would be useful for us with high end ITX builds. They have only two ram slots so we cannot just buy two kits and get dual rank speeds that way.

I have 2 kits of 4500 gskill.. purchased at the same time. With consecutive serial numbers.. and one kit is a1 PCB and the other is A2 PCB. So there are 100% no guarantees just buying two of the same kit will all be the same.

Reminds me, one of you past vids about the MSI z490 unify inspired me to buy an eBay pair of 16GB Corsair Vengeance 3200c16 with dual rank samsung B die at the beginning of the year. I haven't tried pushing it to high voltages, but they happily run at 4133c17 at around 1.4v (with low SA and IO voltages). Couldn't be happier for under a hundred dollars for 32gb of dual rank at that everyday speed, and wouldn't have thought of it without this channel.

Corsair’s recent 16GB sticks have a lot of Rev B. Ver3.40 and 3.44. They seem to do very high frequencies.

normie understanding of video, 1) if you want 100% dual rank you'll have to go with 4x8GB or 2x32GB gigs. 2) Higher mhz means higher bin quality which translate to better overclock 3) don't buy 2400mhz ram, it's trash 3) secondary timings just as important as cas if not more. 4) buy crucial for high compatibility 5) buy g.skill if you are looking for fancy b-die

Might be a dumb question but is the gskill 4000 cl16 kit better than the 4000 cl 17 kit? I'm asking because of the timings that follow cas. 17 18 18 18 sounds "tighter" than 16 19 19 19.

Do you have any thoughts on using the Motherboard QVL lists to determine what chip something uses? The ASUS ones lists the Chip maker on their QVL, and MSI's is searchable and lists the full chip type, like "Samsung 5WB". I know that's not going to be definitive, because different chips in the same batch, but is it at least a decent guideline for what something might be, especially for the higher performance stuff that could only be one of a couple of chips?

  • @PwadigytheOddity

I picked up a DR 32gb kit and got 14-14-14-28, 42, 8, 2s, 4s/16 and 252 stable at 3600 BCLK 101, 1T. 1.45, 1.2 soc, 1150 vddg, 1100 vddp per your recs for daily use. With GDM I can do straight ridiculous stuff.
I hit timings lower on this DR kit at given frequencies than my best two sticks (out of four) of that same team-group dimms you have.
Is it possible they weirdly bin the B-die chips destined for B-die even more aggressively than even the most aggressively binned SRs at a given rating? They would kind of have to for guaranteeing stability.
On one hand, More chips = more chances at a bad chip, on the other hand, more chips means they had to bin the chips harder.
I could have just lucked out though. It’s just a 3200 14-14-14-32 (@1.35) kit from G. Skill. Seems to be in every way better than the 3600 14-14-15-36 (@1.45) bin from teamgroup I got. Idk if I got the right TRAS numbers there but I think you know which bins I’m talking about.
My strat for Ryzen has been “max the voltages to safe for daily, hit 3600, and tighten.”
Weirdly though, I got the kit stable by doing a lot of unorthodox things. I’m on a 5900x, so pretty much all aspects of overclocking is weird thermal voodoo magic between various components. Water-cooling and undervolting my GPU was huge for system stability.

I know this is a bit specific but I am putting together a system based around the ROG Crosshair VIII Impact board and 5900X. Yeah it will be used for gaming but it will also moonlight for dev work (inc VM's) so I need 32GB ram (64GB would be nice but I believe that would be too expensive). I want to be able to push this thing to the absolute limit I can. What would be your recommendations for a 2x16 or 2x32 kit for a build like this?

Your opinions on my opinion... as that currently RAM keeps the price so well right now, just buy the full sets, and sell your old odd set, if upgrading from 1 to 2 or 2 to 4 etc sticks.
PS, Kingston RAM is noted on their website as to if it's 64 or 128 bit (single or dual rank).

Thinking about getting the 5900/5950X + ASUS x570 Dark Hero + either the Corsair CMK32GX4M2Z4000C18 (2x16GB 18-22-22-42 1.35v Micron B) or Corsair CMK32GX4M4K4000C19(Ver4.31) (4x8GB 19-23-23-45 1.35v Samsung something), leaning towards the 2x16 kit. These are the only DR 4GHz kits on the ASUS QVL.

    Buildzoid,
if it's not out of your remit, would you have any guideline on which is the safer way to go about doubling the capacity down the line without buying a new kit of double capacity?
It doesn't concern overclocking so it's probably not very interesting for you but let's suppose that I got my 2x 8GB kit running according to its XMP profile. My system is an ordinary dual channel (let's say 3700X on B550) and I fitted one 1-rank module per channel.
After some time, happy with the performance, I find myself needing 32GB so I try to buy another pair of 1-rank modules with the same (or better?) specs on paper. I may not be able to find the same manufacturer and model.
I don't want to try my luck, I'm not temped by overclocking, I just want my 3600 16-18-18-38 1.35V to happily work alongside a new kit with the same (or better) specs. What is most likely to go wrong? And would it be more sensible to place the two modules from the same kit on the same channel?

I dont know where I heard this but I got told somewhere, that specifically the 2x16GB 3200mhz CL16 lpx kits from corsairs website only (weird ik) are always B die only specifically those sticks, I can say the ones that are in my PC using thaiphoon burner read as B die that could just be luck though and the ones in my Mrs PC is also B die again that could just be pure luck they were purchased at least 1 year apart but both off of corsairs website rather than amazon or such...

Hey buildzoid, i bought 2 kits of the viper steel 2x8 4400mhz because i was thinking about upgrade my old r5 1600 with some new stuff (intel or amd it will depend on which one will offer the bast value for a gaming cpu). Now i was wondering if for mainly gaming purposes, going 4x8 to get them working in dual rank is it going to be a waste of money (in which case i would return one of the kit) or will it be a good move to get a little bit more of future proof when i'm going to upgrade my gpu with something like rtx 4000 or rx 7000?
Also is it worth to wait for the new ddr5 INTEL or AMD platforms?

I got relatively lucky with my 4 x 8gb corsair sticks I didn't buy them at the same time so really lucky. 2 sticks are Samsung B die (newer stuff) and 2 sticks are Hynix (something). The hynix stuff is rated for 3000 and the Samsung as 3200 both CL16. I can't get it to run 3200 cl16 but it runs fine at 3000 CL16 so that's ok. Solo the hynix will do 3600 CL18 or 3200CL16 but I wanted the more ram and duel rank so will sacrifice a bit of raw speed for that.

Even with an explanation its super hard to choose I want 4x8gb (2x2x8gb only saves about $10 here, so I'll take the 4x8 safety). I keep flipping between $250 for 3600 cl18-22--22-34, $369 for 3600 cl16-16-16-36 or $578 for cl14-14-14-36. I hate hover spending, but I also don't want to shoot myself in the foot and with 11th gen I don't want to have to worry about 2nd great by going over 3600. I'll probably go the CL14 kit incase I get stuck with my first ram overlock. then I can fall back to the XMP.

@Actually Hardcore Overclocking : I've got a question that's simply out of curiosity.. You mention that a manufacturer such as Corsair will use any memory chip that's available at the time, and also its my understanding that kits of sticks are sold together because they know they work together.
My question is, and keep in mind this doesn't necessarily make sense to do, its just a theoretical situation.. what would happen if you had say 4x8GB Corsair 3600MHz CL18 sticks that came together as a kit (32GB total) and then took out 2 sticks and put in sticks from a 2x8GB Corsair 3600MHz CL18 kit? (so the idea is that they *should* be the same sticks individually and you'd still have the same setup and 32GB in total).
Could there potentially be a problem because of different memory chips or maybe because they weren't paired at the factory or could both if those factors be a problem? I'm just really curious about it.

    • @zadekeys2194
      @zadekeys2194 2 роки тому +1

The 2x8GB that you want to theoretically add later on, will not be guaranteed to work. Under the hood the ram could be totally different modules Vs the original 4, which would be the same & have been validated at the factory to work together. All that said, it could work, but you likely won't be able to OC the ram as much by mixing and matching. Hope that makes sense.

Depends on Motherboard as well. As in does it support it? Anyway going off the part number alone, that's a G.Skill DDR4 3200 CL14 32GB(8GBx4 - Q in Part# = Quad) kit. FYI, ALL G.Skill 32GB CL14-14-14-34 kits are Dual Rank Modules in Dual or Quad kit form. This would pair very well with a 5600X. FWIW, I run the Flare X version of that kit(-32GFX) on a B550M mobo with a 3800XT. CPU-Z reports the Modules as Dual Rank.

I need some advice to get my RAM to 3600Mhz, RAM is Crucial Ballistix BL2K32G32C16U4B 2x32GB Kit (64 GB total) 3200mhz 16-18-18-36. They are dual rank Micron B-Die, august 2021.
Motherboard is asus crosshair vi hero x370 with 8503 bios. CPU is Ryzen 5800X
    I used dram calculator 1.7.3 to get speeds for 3400Mhz, I choose Zen 2, A0/B0, 2 rank, 2 dimm modules, b350/x370, 100 bclk and Micron E/H-die (because the software is not updated for 16GB B-die) and it's stable with Fast preset at 3400Mhz. I get 64ns in Aida64. 49.1 gb/s read, 27.2 gb/s write, 48.2 gb/s copy.
I get post for 3466 and 3533 with Safe and Fast preset, but Windows BSOD during startup
And I get no post with the settings for 3600mhz, is there any setting that prevent the system to not post?
    What should I try?
I wanted this kit to do 3600. Well it's fine because it's dual rank and 3400 DR is faster and smoother than SR at 3800 I assume.
    Thank you.

I bought the 4000MHz Ripjaw V kit (offshoot of the Trident showed at 7:00) because I saw it for $200 and have been using old 2800MHz RAM since I switched to Ryzen in January 2020 that is rated for CL15, but running at CL19 because ASUS refuses to support it so it fails POST at its rated, or any custom, timing.. even manually inputting CL20 at 1666MHz. 8GB DR Hynix M-die sticks.
This 4000 kit is single rank and some weird Hynix chip that wasn't really labeled in Typhoon Burner and DRAM calculator wouldn't even load the XMP dump. Listed as "H5ANAG8N[M/A]JR-VKC"
Have no idea how to get my 3950x to 2000FCLK, so I've been running it at 3600/1800 CL18 (will try tuning 3800/1900 later); latency is 70ns and I haven't seen a single increase in performance in any benchmark or game I've tested. Synthetic memory testing shows everything higher.. but real world performance has been no different so far.
So, I randomly stumbled across this video in my feed and I'm hoping it ends up helping, as I refuse to believe jumping so high up in memory frequency does nothing. I really don't want to spend the money upgrading when DDR5 is on the horizon, but if I need to jump to a 64GB DR B-die kit for my 3950 (5950 someday..) to actually gain big, then I'll try to swallow it.

So I just returned G.SKILL DDR4000 16-19-19-39 for DDR3600 14-15-15-36. I keep going back and forth between whether I made the right choice. Per the leaks, RKL FCLK only syncs up to 3733, so I would have had to drop the 4000 kit anyway. Beyond that, the 3600 kit has the best of the 3 B dies where as the 4000 kit had the worst, the 3600 kit has SPPR, SPD revision 1.1, and higher factory J-DEC (which means nothing).
Tell me I didn't make a mistake, but be honest if I did. The 3600 kit is rare and sells out quickly where as the 4000 kit restocks often.
