Great job 👏 I’ve changed the ones on my 997 which was a pain due to the exhaust, it looks like there’s slightly more room on the Boxster? A better design to be honest. The torque on the coil pack bolts is 7.5ft lbs. I didn’t have a torque wrench small enough so I just done the same, nice and tight, although keep in mind the low 7.5 setting. It looks like you had the newer type coil packs which means you had longer bolts supplied. The old coil packs were prone to cracking so they made the body of the coil pack thicker on the new one hence longer bolts. Good job with the tube and butt plug 😅. I’ve not replaced these tubes before? If you remove and replace the spark plug with the tube out is there a risk if the plug dropping down where the tube should be?? Ie should you have fitted the tube back and then fitted the plug?? I’m not sure as I’ve never done it but I probably would have put the new tube in first? I couldn’t see any axel stands on camera? Did you use them? If not then I would next time, you here lots of stories about jack’s failing. Good job
Perfect timing for this video as I’m doing this exact job this weekend. Independent shop was going to charge me over $1500 to do the job. Glad to hear it’s not a headache.
Great video Jay, thank you. As a newbie to a 1999 Boxster your videos and help are greatly appreciated. You do a nice job on your videos. I plan to change out the plugs, tubes and coil packs soon.
Great video Jay. I really like your videos because not only are they very informative, but entertaining as well. You have a great attitude and your enthusiasm for your Boxster comes through in every video. Keep up the great work!
Good job Jay. Done this several times. Nice to see you loving the Boxster back to top shape. Remind people to be safe and use jack stands as safety backup. Yup spark plugs first then tube, either way you managed it well! Keep up the great videos.
If you still have your tool kit there should be a bar with a threaded end. This is a wheel hanging tool that makes dismounting and (especially) mounting the wheels much easier.
I think it IS easy actually. It must be if a moron like me can do it! Definitely give it a shot and you’ll see. God, I hope I make the hood look easy too! Hahaha!
Funny enough, just did this job a couple weeks ago and it fixed my misfire and the car runs so much better. Wasn't a hard job at all with the right extentions.
@@JAYREAD Don't. Russian roulette while lying under a car because you didn't use stands adds an extra element to these vids that can't be underestimated.
Great work! This was the first job I did on my 996. It was a bitch. Access is a lot better on the 986…in hindsight I would have manned up and removed the mufflers.
Jay you are absolutely golden! Thank you for all this great content. I’m a new subscriber. Curious what wrist watch you been wearing in you’re videos . Omega aquaterra ? Cheers mate 🍻
Just curious re the installation part of the process. No issues with the removal process but would you have been better off bolting down the coil pack for the middle cylinder last as it would free up more working space to get at the bastard cylinder. Hope this makes sense….
The first time I have seen another Boxster with the same colour cobo as mine, Is it an S version, Mine is a 2000 S. From Porsches registry there were only 2 made in the world for the year 2000
Great video. TBH, I'm concerned about all that oil in the tubes. Where did it come from? It's obviously leaking down on the rest of the motor as well. It's always something, isn't it?
Isn’t it?! They tell me it’s the valve cover gasket. Does that sound right? I’m hoping that the improved O rings on the new spark plug tubes will help.
@@JAYREAD More than likely. I have a 997.1 and I can't even imagine what a job that would be with the motor in the middle. But that is a fair amount of oil leaking out. Were the other cylinders as bad?
you will want to retorque the spark plugs after 1000 miles. If you do not do this they will produce a chirp eventually at cold start. I spent days attempting to find the reason why my car made a chirping noise at cold start. I retorqued the plugs and the chirp went away.

I’ve pinned this comment so hopefully people will see the torque spec. Thanks as always for the info. I learn a lot from your comments!
I would recommend pulling the plug prior to pulling the tube. you do not want to be fishing bits out of the block.
Good thinking!

That’s really helpful actually! I hate putting the wheels back on! Thank you!
First time on your channel, I have a 987 Boxster. Really good watch thanks. You seem like a good guy.
Thanks a lot, Mark. Really happy to hear that you enjoyed it! Viva 987!
Glad you got good use out of the spark plug tubes and the boat plug. Also good to see that the boat plug worked so well.
Thanks Mike! Yes, all of it worked so well!
Thanks Jay. You make it look easy . I'll certainly give it a go next time. Looking forward to seeing how you get on with the hood.

It definitely makes a difference. Worth doing! One thing off the list anyway!
Always a pleasure watching you manage to get the job done. Inspiring indeed!
Give it a shot, Chris! You’ll be surprised how easy it is!
I need to do this also on my 996 I have misfire every time I wash my car soo I order 6 new coils hope to do this next weekend with your video 👌🤜
Good luck! Glad to have been able to help!
Watching because I am quite certain this is in my future. Thanks!
Glad to be of service!
Nice to you to take care of this little marvel.
It’s is a little marvel! Unlike me!
lovely vid sir - I was thinking that would be a total PITA.
Hey thanks! Not at all as it turns out!
Jay, Always interesting videos that help many.. Kudos ! You make it look simple. Hope your Mum us well.
Thanks Ariel. She’s fine, thanks for asking!
Great looking boxster and good video.
It looks like you may only be using a floor jack. If that is the case, please pick up some jack stands for safety reasons.
OK!

Jay nice work! Interesting sounds your ratchet makes.

Haha! It is a bastard too! No. The problem is not being able to see and doing everything by feel. There’s enough space between the coil packs.
The first time I have seen another Boxster with the same colour cobo as mine, Is it an S version, Mine is a 2000 S. From Porsches registry there were only 2 made in the world for the year 2000
Aha! Mine’s a 2001!
Question... could a plug fall into the valve cover without the spark plug tube in place?
Don’t know. I wouldn’t think so. However, another subscriber commented that you could lose bits of the tube in there if you took the plug out first.
I have never see "Vario" anywhere on my engine block. I am wondering if you have had some upgrades or replacements done to your engine?
Good question! It actually says ‘Vario Cam’.

@@Bonspieler Not sure. I didn’t look inside each of them. The valve cover gasket will get done soon and that will hopefully sort it.
why wouldn't you remove the plugs before removng the tubes? I seems like they could drop in the pan?
They tell me that there is a greater chance of a crumbly tube going in than a plug but, as you know, I know pretty much nothing!
Thanks been a great help
Glad to hear!
What is that tool you used to remove the coil tubes?
That’s a boat transom plug. Worked brilliantly!
misfire on 2,3,4,5 and not the other 2 cylinders. What do you think is the reason for this. Obviously be a few things. Tell me what?

"produce a chirp"? How about a ticking noise? Would that be possible?
nice
Stop copying me Jay! I just did coils 3 weeks ago.
