I loved my grandmother beyond words and God rest her soul. This made me think about when I started eBay 27 years ago and it was fairly a new idea back then. She flipped out saying, "What are you thinking? You are going to get taken!" I have to admit she had me shaking in my boots a bit, but I didn't let on. I kept pressing on. Truthfully it was only because she didn't understand the platform let alone the internet LOL. Before long, when she saw me working day and night and at times shipping out 49 packages a day, she began to see it was indeed a wonderful job. So much so that every single day she literally showed up at my house, wanting her cup of coffee, and sitting at the table packing things up carefully, and she was good at it! She lived for it and had a blast watching what I was getting sold and just couldn't believe it! To this day I'm glad I kept going and I'm still loving it! I sure do miss her being there though.
Happy Sunday Scott. I definitely OVER invested in inventory, thus I shouldn't have to source a long time. I almost made the mistake of shipping 1st class in a priority box, but the postal clerk helped me out.
I love that. My whole goal is to help people. I'm still working on creating better and better videos that will hopefully be easier and easier to understand. I really appreciate the encouragement.
I'm pretty much the same way. I listed an item and had a friend of mine buy it so I could go through the experience because I had never sold anything nor shipped anything before. I ran into a small problem getting my shipping label to print the right size but I figured it out. It seems like there will be bumps in the road but I think everybody has them when they first start. Good luck.
#5 is me. I have all the equipment, label printer, scale, boxes, etc. then I ask myself how to take good pictures, look that up, then what if I make a shipping mistake, look that up 😂 and so on. You’ve reinforced my thought, You have to do it to learn. 😬

Thanks chachingking appreciate all the advice and content, do you have one on step by step right after someone buys something how to finish it in ebay and print out the label, watching you do it right from the computer. You do have to watch out for number three more than you'd think. Even if your friends or family want you to succeed, they may not want you to succeed doing that or to be really successful at it. I know that doesn't sound like what a friend or family member would do, but it does happen. Many times in the past I have sought council and was talked out of it. Looking back all these years later I can see where I should have gone ahead numerous times where I was talked out of something for reasons that may not have had anything to do with it being a bad idea. I am not saying one shouldn't seek council before trying something, but listen very carefully and understand that there are reasons other than it being a bad idea that the idea is being shot down. And if that can happen with friends and family, it certainly can happen with people you don't know on social media.

Love the video man. I'm not going to name names like they do but I really got put off of another channel they would say something. I would agree with it and try to comment or add to the discussion. Then they would disagree with my comment contradicting themselves over and over again & also giving out conflicting & bad advice to new comers alongside a lot of good advice but it became frustrating just being there in that community with it's concrete pecking order. It's like they only wanted foreigners who don't speak English and had no opinion to view their stuff.
One of the things I learned as an educator is that people connect with different people. I'm 100% positive I'm not everyone's flavor of the month. And that's OK! My plan is to help people. I hope that I can do that. But one thing is for sure, I definitely don't know everything! What works for me will never be the only way it can or should be done. Again a very helpful video. I am trying to come up with a bit of a schedule. What days to go sourcing and giving myself a budget to spend and not going past that. Also, not picking up items that don't sell or sell for very little. Trying to make at least 3 times the amount of what I buy it for (I'm mostly selling small stuff, so if something cost me $5 to pick up, it will get listed for $15 minimal unless it's worth more, then the price will go up obviously).
Just wanted to thank you for your knowledge, I finally listed some items and sold some already. Will definitely share your link if you don't mind. Learned alot. Thanks again
That's awesome! Every job can come with some frustration. Ebay isn't exempt. But it's allowed Mel and me to earn an income and still have time to take care of parents and spend time together
Thanks Scott, great encouraging video. I’m a self inflicting victim of #5. I’m now waiting to start sell on eBay till the beginning of the year. So my taxes are easier to file.
Thanks! I'm already guilty and I haven't gotten started yet...but I spent all day today photographing items, so that's something, right? BTW, a few years ago my husband and I sold everything we owned to hit the road RVing (which Covid-19 derailed) and it occurred to me that I have PLENTY of phtographing, measuring, and listing experience--it was all on Facebook Marketplace, though. When you ship your items from within the ebay page, you purchase the item right from home. And then you simply print it out. I use a Rollo printer and love it. But just seems like online is so much more profitable! Quick question how many items do you think you should list when you first get started?
You'll probably be limited initially. But, I wouldn't get hung up on how many items you list. We focus more on the value of the items we are listing. We focus more on listing consistently. So, pick an amount that you can maintain. If you do that, the sales will eventually be consistent if the items are good and priced well. You can do this!
Just getting started on Ebay. Inventory is not a problem for me. My wife is an Amazon hoarder, buys new merchandise everyday and 90% of it just ends up packed away in closets, the garage, and anywhere she can stuff it in. Just a narrow trail left in the garage now to walk through. Has enough kitchen hardware to supply a couple of Battleships. Mountains of clothes, 30-40 pairs of shoes and boots that don't get worn. It would probably take me about 5 years to sell off all of her collections. Of course she hits the thrift stores as well. Any advice?
What I do doesn't work for everyone. We buy way too much stuff. LOL WAY to much. But I give it away to new resellers in my area. That understandably doesn't work for everyone. What I'd do in your situation is cherry pick the best stuff. Then, build some bulk lots and liquidate some of the other stuff. Clear up room. Clear up your house. Clear up your mind. And, hopefully, keep the best stuff while helping out someone else.
Thanks for the video sir. At one point, eBay made it a requirement that payments needed to be sent to your bank via a routing number. Is that still a requirement in order to sell on eBay? Any advice on that particular subject would be appreciated. Thanks again.
Yes, you will need to link an account so that you can receive payments. I've conducted almost 10,000 transactions after linking my bank account without any issues at all. I can only speak for me, but it has been just fine.
Do you sell on a full-time basis? I've been selling part-time with quite a bit of success since 2018. I've considered doing EBay on a full-time basis (I truly LOVE reselling)? Having said that, I've quickly been told "not to"..."you can't make a good living", "it's too hard", etc. etc. It's a big decision...do you have an opionion? Thanks!
I usually tell people to start reselling and keep pushing until you can't afford to go to your regular job. We both work part-time reselling. It's still our primary income, but I also have a steady retirement income. Can you make a living reselling? Sure. It's a lot of work. So is any job. Only you can decide if you can get enough good inventory, get it listed, and sell it at a level to sustain yourself. There are lots of people in the reselling community doing it. My opinion is always to build it up to the point that it's already enough before you quit.
@@TheChaChingKing - I REALLY appreciate the advice...it's a lonely business. I get what you're saying about the side hustle income being enough....but, how's it "enough" when a person can only do so much each week (my main job is VERY demanding)?? I did around $1,900 in Gross Sales in February (for example)....could I have done $3,900-$4,900 full-time?? IDK, I guess that's the chance you take??
@@b-man1232 If I ever take a calculated risk, I've tried to not only run the numbers, but run all the ancillary issues that I can possibly imagine. How much more work would it take for me to get more inventory, get it listed then pack and ship it once it sells? Am I willing to do that work? Are there isolation issues when I disconnect from the informal relationships at a regular job. You know, stuff like that. For me and where I was at financially, the answer to most of my questions was that I was already making enough and doing enough to move towards this. But, your question is exactly what people need to ask themselves first.
What if as a seller I said the buyer needs to pay for shipping based on the location to where the item is shipped and the buyer selects the cheapest rate, which is the "media rate"? Do I ask the buy for more money or do I just eat the cost of postage?
If you use calculated shipping, it should charge the buyer enough to cover the shipping. They can't change the shipping to something you haven't offered. I'm not entirely sure I understand the question.
@@TheChaChingKing Thanks. I don't think I would have selected media shipping, but i guess I did. Oh well, I'll chalk it up to one of those "Live and Learn" experiences to double check the shipping method.
I'm a new seller, and I've been trying to follow your sage advice. I got my first offer for a down jacket and was SO excited, but it turned out that the person never paid. I am so discouraged and wondering if I should remove all best offers from my listings. Your thoughts?
Oh Jane, I'm sorry that happened. It's beyond frustrating that that is even a thing. I would still accept Best Offer. I think you'll sell more over time if you do. That said, there are a couple of things you can do to help lessen the issue. You can block bidders/buyers who have unpaid items strikes. Tell you what, if it helps, I'll shoot a quick video that will show you how to block non-paying buyers. Even if you already know, I would bet that there are people who don't. I'll get that video out ASAP.
Obviously, it depends on the brand. Some brand names absolutely help. People actively search for Levi's and Nike. But, the right item will sell regardless of the brand.
Please remove previous comment. I do not know if they were sent or erased Idea for a show for beginners…. You may not be able to. Especially when you first begin. But, you'll get better and better at finding things as you gain experience. Over time it's possible to raise your average sale price well beyond $20
@TheChaChingKing I Made my business account in April haven’t start listing yet I was thinking about starting next week will it be hard for me to sell cause I’m just starting
It really depends on what you're selling. The biggest issue with a brand new account is just people trying to take advantage of you. So, use some caution. Don't talk to anyone off the platform. But, you can absolutely do this!
TYPO! Dang! Give this comment a "thumbs-up" if you found it. It took Melody a half second. 😞

I typed "none-expert" instead of "non-expert." I'm crushed. I almost took the video down.
@@TheChaChingKing now I have to watch the video a third time 😭😭😭.
Found it! Finally 🤦🏻♀️😂😂!

Good 👍 advice!
Thanks!
@@TheChaChingKing Thank you sir.
@@TheChaChingKing Thanks so much! I love your positive outlook and helpful adivce.
I recorded the video and am editing it now. It will go up tomorrow by lunch.

How much does having a brand name help your sales?
Obviously, it depends on the brand. Some brand names absolutely help. People actively search for Levi's and Nike. But, the right item will sell regardless of the brand.
I just got my 4th sale while listening to YOu. Cha ching :)
Can I create an account on my phone the first time
I believe you can, but I haven't done that.
Please remove previous comment. I do not know if they were sent or erased
Idea for a show for beginners…. Examine examine examine item before you buy.. i have a raincoat missing its hood, Hot Wheel garage missing two ramps, a collectible porcelain cat with a repaired leg, toy backpack with unremovable stain and a teddy bear with a very light , unremovable stain on sweater that can only be seen in the sunlight Examine and learn
That's a really good idea
Yeap, my hear keep telling me..Why are you doing this for...aaauuugggg
I completely understand.
Suppose I can't find $20dollar items every day.
You may not be able to. Especially when you first begin. But, you'll get better and better at finding things as you gain experience. Over time it's possible to raise your average sale price well beyond $20
I heard the term treat Ebay like your girlfriend and repay you with sales
😆 Uh-oh....Melody doesn't even let me date.
When I see... KINDLY....it's scammer alert
LOL...too true.
Ok thank you
