  • The struggles of today’s veterans are numerous and deeply rooted; from accessibility of services to suicide, the entire community is affected by this phenomena. But what if the solution is as simple as continual service in which the veteran and the community both benefit? This talk shares a personal journey of coming from the threat of post service mental instability to becoming an executive at one of Dayton’s largest philanthropic organizations.
Matthew Purkey is Vice President of Resource Development at United Way of the Greater Dayton Area, PhD candidate, and United States Marine Corps veteran. Along with his wife Amanda, daughter Micah, and son Ezekiel; Matthew is a proud resident and community activist in East Dayton. He is an alumnus of the City of Dayton’s Neighborhood Leadership Institute, and a current member of Leadership Dayton, Dayton Business Journal 40 under
    40. He serves on countless boards and committees including The Victory Project, AXUS, PowerNet of Dayton, and the recently implemented Miami Valley Young Professionals Alliance.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

"The physical deaths" great point, when i was 19, i went to war and i died there, the man that returned is not me, and never will be. And i think that's pushed me closer to the edge than anything else has.

I was told this after returning from my 2nd combat tour when my friends and loved ones walked away from me. They said, "You arent the Tom we knew. He mustve died overseas. We dont know who you are." I wasnt belligerent, mean or abusive. I wasnt mired in substance abuses. I was changed by my experiences and they werent willing to remain. Like you, this pushed me closer and closer to the edge, with no support from without. Finding the resiliency to continue on my own and from within was a struggle i would wish on noone. I do my best to make time to be there for new and old veterans who need to talk to someone who was there and understands. We may not be blood, but we are family.
