The more I watch this season, the more I realize that Brooke is drawn to Ridge for the pure motivation to stick it to Stephanie. It made so much sense for her to choose Nick. By the time Stephanie comes back, Ridge and Brooke will be engaged, while Nick does nothing wrong to lose Brooke’s favor.
It's simple: Nick is a free man. The mattress is not interested in that. He can be used to make Ridge jealous, to polish her ego and to play protector. There isn't enough for more.

She was never honest and he was always arrogant with her. To this day they don't trust each other. Just like it was later with Liam and Hope.

Nicky doesn't have time for explanations, so he just immediately takes Brooke's side in this situation without having any of the history or the context. Just like Jackie just said "poor girl" when hearing about what happened, even though she is supposedly fond of Eric. Being there to support Brooke is more than half the reason these characters even exist.
