- A good friend of mine told me about this locomotive. So my exploration/co-worker friend decided to go & find it & so we did.
My friend who told me about this engine:
www.tiktok.com...
PRR Alco RS3:
A diesel electric built between May 1950- August 1956. A total of 1418 were produced between that time. With 40 inch wheels & a length of approximately 56 ft 6in, & a weight of 247,000 Ib (112,100 Kg) it produced a tractive effort of 61,775 Ib (28,021 Kg). A top speed of 85 mph (137 km/h), the motor that supported this was a V12 four stroke diesel.
This engine sits in weeds & waits for a day that it can get the love it deserves. Although this engine has missing parts, it still could have a chance at some kind of survival.

If you search PRR 8479 you can find pictures of this locomotive while it was still in service and also when it was parked alongside the shops in Reading, PA. You can also find the sad last few years of its history.
Wow! The vultures picked it clean!! It’s a shell now!!
Sadly
Alco RS-3.
Yep
Old girl has been picked clean
Sadly😢
It was in running condition when parked. Heavy vandalism made it totally worthless, but from what I see, it appears she’s been harvested for parts to restore other ALCO RS3’s.
I believe it, it is sad to see it like that
Sad To See An Old Abandoned And Stripped Locomotive Like That. It's A Wonder The PRR Left It There Instead Of Scrapping It Out...
Interesting that the engine still has the smaller numbers below the cab windows, instead of the larger numbers found on diesels later on. Taken out of service long ago before the number change? Just curious....is the engine sitting on a disused spur track or siding that still connects to an active track, or is the track completely isolated?
The track that it was on was completely covered by weeds, next to what I think is now a disused yard next to the mainline
@@Lil_Pennsy Where approximately is that? Don't be specific, What state is it in?
@lancomedic it is in Southeast PA not to far from where I live along the Harrisburg line, I won’t say where exactly do to the fact some might do more
@@Lil_Pennsy Thanks, I guess it surprises me that Conrail didn't sell it to a scrapper and scrap it on the spot. The PRR ceased existing 55 years ago so it is really frozen in time.
@lancomedic it really is. I’m gonna guess Conrail didn’t know about this locomotive, but that’s just me
Great video. Like me!
I just came across this video ... Subscribed!!! 👍
💪💯
Great video! You guys sure know your locomotives! Do you think they’ll restore it? I think it has a lot of potential. That’s back in the good, after war, EMD years when railroads first started to dieselize their locomotive fleet.
I honestly don’t think it would get restored but you never know.
@@Lil_Pennsy That'll buff right out!
I have the property to relocate it and place it next to the old mainline... I just need money now...
Don’t we all 😂, & where might that be somewhat
@@Lil_Pennsy 1/4 mile east of the old Westmoreland Coal company before you hit Jeanette
@Photonic64 west PA?
Yep@@Lil_Pennsy
Hmm
8479 should be rescued and restored
In its current condition it’s gonna be very hard to do
Man its looking worse than ever! Hope sombody saves it....
Not much anyone can really do, in a lot of weeds & hidden from sight
Way,way,beyond saving.
@TopHotDog you never know, could be a good cosmetic
@@Lil_Pennsy but who would pay for it? many more salvageable units went to the scrapper for the lack of $s&¢s.
@TopHotDog yeah. Anything is possible but hopefully this engine doesn’t get completely scrapped.
Thats an ALCO RS2 or RS3 probobly built in the late 1940's
RS3 💯
very good video
Thank you
Looks like no rails, it’s just sitting on the ground 😮
They are buried beneath the ground😂
Looks like she had a generator fire.
I don’t know, but all I know is that the scrappers got her
Spray a little starter fluid in the engine, should start right up. 😂
😂 I wish that’d be funny
Alco RS-3 Diesel locomotive
They were called honorary steam engines because they puked black smoke every time you throttled up
😂😂 the more you know 💯😂
@@Lil_Pennsy yep
Alco RS 3 ??
Yes
Looks like a RS3.
It is
It ain’t got no gas in it😊
Ain’t that the truth😂
Gee, I wonder if the "builder's plates" were still attached to the side frames ...... just kidding.
😂😂
Scrap
Anything is possible
