    Good one Jake! When the misfire counts ramp up but the engine runs smooth, that's always a red flag to put down the parts cannon and look at the scan data 😄

    Another tech tip. When your doing the inevitable cam and rocker arm swap under each cam gear is a oil galley plug. They are guaranteed to be loose. Its the root cause of the failure. And extended oil change interval but that is different story.

      THIS.

      Would agree as to root cause but a contributing factor some times, root cause seems to be oul drain back and no oil in top end on start up for 3-4 seconds every start ( not lack of lubrication but the slapping of valve train components- wrong oil, cheap oil, extend untervals justake it all worse) and loose plugs just allow air into system and make it worse, check out the oil filter mod for a spin on filter with anti drain back valve, have had cam /follower/ lifter issue where plugs are tight many times too, I won't work on one of these as I regular if the filter mod not done as it's only a customer dissatisfaction case waiting to happen, JMHO from what I've seen and strategy I've used but whatever floats your boat, I've seen vehicles which barely are shut off have zero issues too

    Had this on a newer Ford F-150 during the summer coworker did an a/c repair the PCM disabled a/c compressor, I did a PCM memory reset and bingo a/c worked normally even though it was repaired properly. Poor guy was stuck on this for half the day scratching his head data PID showed correctly functioning sensor after he repaired it and a/c still wouldn’t work. I make it a habit to always look for resets if there is something seemingly weird after a repair or a code that won’t go away. Great info thanks Jake for the content, boy these gen2 3.6 suffer from misfires had one recently came from another shop with a misfire on cylinder 3 they fired the old parts cannon (plugs, coils,swapped injectors etc) before I started the engine checked codes and freeze frame data misfires occurred engine cold on start up I put a camera down in cyl 3 pressure tested cooling system and bingo popped head gasket coolant was entering the cylinder I could physically see it dripping down the cylinder wall and pooling on top of the piston.

    yes sir some times there is no substitute for knowledge and experience . today called to a car power train can goes wonky after a few minutes of running knew exactly were to look as a month ago same issue kicked my but for 8 hours . one plug that that the pin was loose but a drag test did not show it up because you can put a pin in just enough that it catch’s and feels good . only way you could find it was scope and wiggle test but you had to wiggle it in just the right place . bloody nightmare 🤪🤪🤪🤪

    Great tip. Ran across this where a used engine was installed and it was tripping cam crank correlation codes afterwards. Also have seen this on multiple GM engines. The key is there are significant misfire counts but you don't actually feel a misfire until the computer shuts down an injector if it does that. Thanks for the tip.

    Trying to think of a reason the oem wouldn't incorporate both relearns into one process?

  • @ultron6931
    @ultron6931 11 місяців тому +1

    This is fantastic! I have just always done a relearn and never really thought about it much when it came to the pentastar. On the other hand everytime I see a P0300 on a GM product you bet you have to do a relearn or it will show misfires. I have done a few of those for injectors that go open and misfire and just replace all 6 with OEM ones since they are not expensive. Bein a 2017 there was no secure gateway, but have you ever had to check one outside when you didnt have internet? Is there a workaround if you don't? Otherwise I know chrysler stuff won't let you deeper than reading codes. Great tip I will keep this inmind.

  • @portlander7280
    @portlander7280 11 місяців тому +2

    I’m sure you know it since you mentioned it but some techs might not know it. after you do a memory reset, global disable stops the rev count and therefore it won’t register misfires even if the engine is physically misfiring and the counter will be stuck at 600 as you see on scanner. It’ll take some time and startups and driving to kick back in and start counting and registering misses again if any. Had a case that bad exhaust valve causing misfires on idle only and the shop put plugs and coils and reset the memory and gave the car back to the customer thinking they fixed it but the light came on after few days. They got fooled by not seeing misfires show up on the scanner right after memory reset

    • @autodiagyt
      @autodiagyt  11 місяців тому +2

      Yeah I hate how chrysler done the misfire counter. Just tell me all the time why disabled it?

      @@autodiagytbuddy, that’s a question for who wrote the program but you’ll see this in the service info. The misfire monitor is a continuous two-trip monitor that uses two different test/counters. 200 rev and 1000 rev. Monitor enabling: The Adaptive Numerator must be learned before the PCM will run the Mis-Fire Monitor. The PCM updates the Adaptive Numerator at every key-ON, and is relearned after battery disconnect. The Misfire Monitor will not run until the Adaptive Numerator has updated since the last battery disconnect. If the Adaptive Numerator is equal to the default value then the PCM knows that the Adaptive Numerator has not been learned and does not permit the Misfire Monitor to run. If the Adaptive Numerator exceeds a calibrated percentage, the PCM sets a DTC for CKP NOT LEARNED and illuminates the MIL. How it worked for me was that start it and take it to highway at steady-ish 55mph for 10-15min and stop and shut off wait 5 min and repeat the same thing and third start and city stop and go driving made it kick in and start counting.

    I remember a 2014 high country one of the 9,875,486 Product enhancements after delivery. Reprogram ecm. It was 5f outside. Reprogrammed ecm. Had to wait for ect to meet minimum for ckp learn. Left it idling , forgot about it and 30 minutes later.... It showed successful. Data showed learned this ignition. Idled the whole time. Never had an issue in 8 years.

    I'm not a professional tech. Nor have I worked on the penastar.
    But I would think that was a given to do a relearn 👍😜🇦🇺I also love it when you take apart modules to find out what failed I love that shit. I remember Eric love done video a few years ago. 20+ codes. he said this thing was kicking his arse and slapping him like a bitch. but no work had been performed. ( RELEARN HAPPY DAYS)😏🇦🇺😜

  • @calholli
    @calholli 11 місяців тому

    There's no good reason why the OEM couldn't have programmed it to do an auto-relearn. Maybe after 3 failed auto-relearns, THEN you get the flashing light. I hate it when companies do this; it's intentional

    You did not follow your process because your process is in your head and not on a checklist of things to do as part of the specific/generic job. If you have any friends who served in the Military and worked on equipment, they have tech data to follow the same as you have Service Info to follow. The military may allow a Quick Reference Checklist to follow so no important step will be missed. The most dangerous job, the pilot of an airplane full of hundreds of passengers uses a QRC, this is what we also need, Designed and customized by each of us for our own personal use. SchrodingersBox YT Channel brags about his scientific process and does not follow his own scientific process and then he complains about his viewers complaining to him, sad. Keep up the great work Jake and hope to see you over at DDTSB soon when you get some EURO work/any work when you get stuck.

    • @autodiagyt
      @autodiagyt  11 місяців тому +1

      Your guess as good as mine. I don’t understand how they make it turn on and off. I’ve had it not count misfires when it’s actually misfiring because it’s “global disabled” but on this one it was counting false misfires when it was supposedly disabled. It’s a crappy way they do it.

    Fortunately, this type of problem never bit me. I remember a guy who would religiously do this after doing a neon head gasket (yes, many millenniums ago) to avoid it running crappy afterwards, and it stuck with me all these years. If a misfire won’t go away after a repair, I’ll try all available scanner functions before getting into any additional diagnostics or repairs. Great tip to share with everyone!

    I had this on a 2008 Honda accord It had a phantom misfire on 2 and 3 but the engine was in low power mode I switched coils spark plugs injectors and was about to change fuel pump and I did some research and they said do a relearn and reset ecu and boom fixed ran great. It was a software issue that needed reprogrammed. But resetting it help for 3 months at a time 😂
