They are maximizing their travel distance this way until they scout another spawning position which doesn't make any sense to me. Btw, always excited to watch another cast from you FP. It has become a near daily ritual for me and my partner to watch a cast of yours in the afternoon after work with a cup of tea each.
This is what's called "N scout" and it's designed to find if your opponent is in one of the two locations closest to you. In TvP this is specificly to punish Nexus first: if they go Nexus first and are close to you, you can rush them and it's much stronger than if they are across the map.
This "shooting the bunker until siege tank arrives" trope should be gone from all TvPs. Like those "hydras shooting the gateway and forge wall" tropes in PvZ.
