I have to disagree. The original intention was Explained the game is basically a gutter. The gutter is a place that's between good stuff. Like the road and the restaurant. These were all gutter people, so I don't agree with you. The movie did keep everything in the gutter, which is what the game is. It's about Misfits, who Are cast out and choose to work together like australia. Think about any character in borderlands, and you will see that they are a castaway. And the movie did the same.They just changed the characters. I feel like people just wanna be angry at something. If you watch this movie on an island and that was all you had, I doubt you would think that it's bad.
Several times I wished Roland had used his Scorpio turret. Would have made sense in those moments where they are about to be overwhelmed. But no. A damn shame.

Pitchford is a prick. The movie bombing has shown us his online persona is a front. He says how the movie does doesn't effect the company but I think he realizes now it absolutely does and is panicking hard. It effects the games because we have quotes of his dumbass saying he personally told the director(s) they could do whatever they wanted with it. That shows he has no love for his own franchise.
It wasn't made for anyone but the director. The director did seem excited to make it, but not because he was adapting a game, no, because he had been given free-reign to do with the source material whatever he wanted by Pitchford. This film was filmed over 4 years ago and apparently it was a Hard R but was heavily reshot and edited in those 4 years of being shelved. Keep in mind that Eli Roth hadn't even started filming Thanksgiving yet after he filmed this. The fact that he went straight from making a big budget blockbuster to going back to making a small little gory cult horror film shows that he did not have a good experience with the studio and execs. I doubt we'll see him try to make this kind of movie again, I think he's learned the lesson that it sadly took M Night Shyamalan several big budget flops to figure out.

The worst FU to the fans: the lack of an obnoxious amount of loot in the movie. The loot is the main character in all the Borderlands games and was missing from the Borderlands movie. They should have made this a B-movie and all would have been good.
Important bit, Craig Mazin parted ways as script writer after Eli Roth and others made several changes to the script so much to the point that he no longer wanted his name associated with the current script of the movie
It honestly boggles my mind how so many adaptations straight up refuse to use the source material and would rather churn out their own dogshit ideas. All these huge movies do is bastardize the IPs and insult the actual fans of them.

Cate Blanchett and JLC are both great actresses, I've enjoyed their movies my whole life. Both were horribly miscast in this movie. I have zero interest in seeing an "aging bounty hunter Lilith." I want to see badass young Lilith, Firehawk Lilith, like we get in the games.
If you watch the movie you’ll see one cutscene with Lilith infinity pistol how the barrel rotates similar to the game BUT every single other scene where she’s using that gun in the movie the barrel doesn’t move 💀 with a budget of over 100m they coulda at least played the game before pulling a halo move

For me there is more frustration involved than anything. Yes it was not good, but also not a disaster. But the frusutration that it's caused makes me hate it. It would have been so easy to do this right. There is so much to use. There are so many "if they had just done this" about this film that it frustrates me to no end. Hollywood always has to try and be so god damn extra. Borderlands really, really didn't need extra. It literally just needed to actually be Borderlands.
The Tina and kreige being in prison thing is vaguely lore accurate as they both were taken and imprisoned but they were experimented on which made them crazy Tina’s parents were tortured in front of her until her mom gave Tina a shank and told her to run. Krieg was experimented on with a lot of tests eventually making him go insane splitting his personality making the bad krieg kill the doctors and the good krieg feel bad for killing them.
I had to consciously remind myself that every character except Krieg and Claptrap were the character they were. I wasnt like oh Roland and Lilith are gonna do that? It was Oh that lady and Kevin Hart are doing something
They should have just made the movie about borderlands or borderlands 2's story, would have interesting to see them adapt the vault hunters into actual speaking characters
I think an angle for the story could have been what many thought, as they were in the animal reserve testing lab in BL2 before the fight with Mordecai's bird, that Kreig might be Tina's Dad from the logs collected. He told the girl to escape, and many thought that was Tina. Especially since she had to blow up something. Then they could have been experimenting with him, turning him into Kreig. And then having him raid Tina's place for their messed up experiment. Tina could have a key item for the vault that Atlas wanted. Atlas came into frame after the Kreig experiment and just wants the item. The item could be for the vault, but a memento that Lilith is familiar with. Something restrained her, and it could open her powers. And have her gain old memories as she was either the Mom and somehow teleported away...something to tie in. Or, that the Mom was a scientist that had found it at a dig site once, maybe with Tannis. And that item was from the last time Lilith fought, and it had Lilith's energy or Siren powers. Like the second, and not the Lilith clone lore they made. But Tina had captured Kreig at one point. Amd used to torture him, too. Remembering the Bandits that help steal her Dad. Later finding out this was her Dad. Would have liked something deeper. The casting was no Bueno.
Marcus should have at least had a part where he asked if they wanted to hear a story. His vehicle is having problems and brings it in to Scooter. There you can meet ClapTrap. Where you can see the burden Marcus gives towards Clappy knowing he's been around that guy too long. It could be at New Haven. Marcus needs to ask about something with Pierce as Tan is is there talking about a location on the map. CalpTrap is following them around the Dust Bowl Garbage Heap of a town. Don't know if Roland was ex Atlas in the movie.
What do we like about borderlands. Crazy guns, crazier characters, blood, gore, dumb jokes, and a badass villain. What did the movie have out of that list? Absolutely nothing. I feel like the writers looked at a list of the characters, found who seemed the coolest, then just ran with it. I highly doubt any of the writers even played the games
As a movie, it's maybe a 4 1/2, because there's so much no one would really understand not being a fan of the games. As a fan, it's like a 2. This is possibly the WORST borderlands media to ever be released.

I've said it on several reviews now but in Joltzdude's review he was asked the question "Is this movie fan pandering or is it written with people who don't know Borderlands in mind?" and his answer was "neither" This movie really doesn't know who it's supposed to be appealing to and as the saying goes 'If you try to please everyone, you wind up pleasing no-one"
Anyone who knows me around here knows that I rarely go negative and try to see the best in shows/movies, even when I'm not a fan. But this one tested me hard. I am a massive Borderlands fan. It's my favorite game franchise of all time. I was skeptical from the casting and trailers, but was SO HOPEFUL that it could still be incredible. I went into the movie knowing it was only going to be based off the game's world and tried to have a mindset of enjoying the backgrounds of the worlds I love, some Easter Eggs, and feeling like I was placed into the game... However... Ugh. So bad. OOF! I tried not to have expectations. But it was GOD AWFUL. It felt like no one involved had ever even seen clips of the game. From directors, to actors, to writers. The personalities didn't match at all (Tina was *not* nuttier than squirrel shit), the story was so out of place, there was no looting for a Looter-Shooter game, I only really caught two notable guns from the game (Lilith starts with an Infinity, then uses a green over-under rifle and a slow pistol the rest of the movie), there was loads of continuity errors, and for a game filled with dirty jokes, cursing, and gratuitous gore, the PG-13 movie didn't hit at all. The color palate missed the game, no attempt at a cell-shaded look, Green Screens so bad it totally took the actors out of the scene, and they didn't even attempt to recreate the locations from the game. As I said, I wanted SO BAD to love this movie and went in with a positive hope and tried not to nit pick. But the more I sit on it, the sadder I get. It doesn't help that Randy Pitchford has gone full keyboard warrior retweeting and attacking any critics, including blocking several of the community's biggest Content Creators and Streamers. I was wanting to give a solid 75/100 to the movie, but left the theater feeling more if a 45/100, and after thinking more, an currently sitting at closer to a 10/100. I'm a sad panda. 😞
I totally agree with what your saying. It also is just a huge punch in the gut to only see one setting for the entire move. When only seeing sand the entire movie it just feels bland. There are so many interesting places to explore in the games that could’ve been included like wind shear waste, kroms canyon, bloodshot stronghold/dam, or even eridium promontory. They didn’t even include any cutscene like introductions for any characters. Such a missed opportunity and a waste of money.
Alright my perfect love action adaptation of borderlands: it’s a TV show first off. The whole show focuses on borderlands 1 and Roland and has him come across the other 3 vault hunters as the story progresses. He finds Lilith outside 9 toes and they kill him together, they run into mordecai in arid hills trying to kill more and Marley after hearing Distant sniper shots, they find brick trying to kill roid rage psycho. From there they move through the story almost exactly as it’s told in the first game while fleshing out the main vault hunters, and giving more story and perspective to combatant Steele. Lilith guides them by feeling if they’re ever don’t know where to go, and by the end of it once the destroyer is destroyed, it’s revealed that angel was speaking to only Lilith but then speaks to the other hunters. Show the satellite at the end, show a report of steeles death hitting general knoxxs death, roll credits, season 2 next year
I feel like that the super fans of this franchise could have made a better script for the movie. I didn't like this movie, but I don't want to hate on it.
This reminds me of Godzilla 98', Roland Emmerich wanted his own Jurassic Park movie so he took something that wasn't even close and proceeded to twist, warp, and ruin it til he ended up with a terrible movie that was exclusively self pleasing. It feels like Eli Roth wanted to make Guardians of The Galaxy and did the same to Borderlands.

Nope, dial it back to the early 1990s, the FIRST Mario Bros. Movie. Even as a then kid, that was wrong. I had friends & family in TX go watch it, family said save your $ until Netflix or Hulu decide to add it to their libraries and my pals went on to say it was great [ one has played the games, all of them and said too many holes but he enjoyed it. Other two have only touched Wonderlands... 8 think they needed to boot up 1 & 2 beforehand; and they hate 3 w/o playing it]
I think they forgot the magic of the character card intros in the games. Those worked great to give a unique feel and the flavor of a character in a very short time frame. The guns the characters used felt so generic action movie. That would have been easier if they had more characters using shields.
I wish I could say I was surprised, but I can't be. The casting choices aside, the whole premise of the movie hinges on the concept and story execution. That they had Gearbox themselves working on this and somehow thought their script and screenplay decisions were true to the games is what utterly baffles me. This is just gonna be remembered as another crap video game adaptation like the Doom movie with The Rock, and that's a shame considering how many great video game adaptations we've had in recent years.

Paying hand over fist for big name actors (who's casting for their roles was questionable when compared to the source material), out-of-touch storytelling, and trying to appeal to a broader audience by dumbing it down to PG-13 killed it. They were far too concerned with attempting to draw new fans into the franchise when all they had to do was showcase what made us all love BL to begin with. New fans would have happened naturally. Instead they just ended up making a watered-down movie that appeals to no one. Very irritating that they can have the blueprint for success yet still somehow botch such a beloved IP. While it may not be the worst game movie ever made, it sure as hell had a long way to fall because of how much the fans love BL and how much hype was built around the movie. Not to mention the crazy amount money invested into it. Unfortunate.
I rarely see movies in theaters anymore, but I would have seen the movie if it was good. It’s people like me who don’t have a reason to go that they need to convince to watch, not people who don’t even know what borderlands is. We’re all 20-30 somethings… why the hell is the movie PG-13….

We are not likely to ever see another BL movie created now because of how hard this movie is flopping. It honestly boggles my mind how so many adaptations straight up refuse to use the source material and would rather churn out their own dogshit ideas. All these huge movies do is bastardize the IPs and insult the actual fans of them.

@@willywonka7812 I would normally agree, but this is one of those things where they can see that actual good adaptations (fallout tv show, last of us etc) can make BANK and that literally EVERY SINGLE film that uses an ip without actually adapting it leaves the box office with less than half of what they spent making the DAMN film

Cate Blanchett and JLC are both great actresses, I've enjoyed their movies my whole life. Both were horribly miscast in this movie. I have zero interest in seeing an "aging bounty hunter Lilith." I want to see badass young Lilith, Firehawk Lilith, like we get in the games.

If you watch the movie you’ll see one cutscene with Lilith infinity pistol how the barrel rotates similar to the game BUT every single other scene where she’s using that gun in the movie the barrel doesn’t move 💀 with a budget of over 100m they coulda at least played the game before pulling a halo move

For me there is more frustration involved than anything. Yes it was not good, but also not a disaster. But the frusutration that it's caused makes me hate it. It would have been so easy to do this right. There is so much to use. There are so many "if they had just done this" about this film that it frustrates me to no end. Hollywood always has to try and be so god damn extra. Borderlands really, really didn't need extra. It literally just needed to actually be Borderlands.
The Tina and kreige being in prison thing is vaguely lore accurate as they both were taken and imprisoned but they were experimented on which made them crazy Tina’s parents were tortured in front of her until her mom gave Tina a shank and told her to run. Krieg was experimented on with a lot of tests eventually making him go insane splitting his personality making the bad krieg kill the doctors and the good krieg feel bad for killing them.
Grenade, not a shank. It's why she's into explosives in the game.

I had to consciously remind myself that every character except Krieg and Claptrap were the character they were. I wasnt like oh Roland and Lilith are gonna do that? It was Oh that lady and Kevin Hart are doing something
They should have just made the movie about borderlands or borderlands 2's story, would have interesting to see them adapt the vault hunters into actual speaking characters
I think an angle for the story could have been what many thought, as they were in the animal reserve testing lab in BL2 before the fight with Mordecai's bird, that Kreig might be Tina's Dad from the logs collected.
He told the girl to escape, and many thought that was Tina. Especially since she had to blow up something.
Then they could have been experimenting with him, turning him into Kreig. And then having him raid Tina's place for their messed up experiment.
Tina could have a key item for the vault that Atlas wanted. Atlas came into frame after the Kreig experiment and just wants the item. The item could be for the vault, but a memento that Lilith is familiar with. Something restrained her, and it could open her powers. And have her gain old memories as she was either the Mom and somehow teleported away...something to tie in.
Or, that the Mom was a scientist that had found it at a dig site once, maybe with Tannis. And that item was from the last time Lilith fought, and it had Lilith's energy or Siren powers.
Like the second, and not the Lilith clone lore they made.
But Tina had captured Kreig at one point. Amd used to torture him, too. Remembering the Bandits that help steal her Dad. Later finding out this was her Dad.
Would have liked something deeper.
The casting was no Bueno.
Marcus should have at least had a part where he asked if they wanted to hear a story.
His vehicle is having problems and brings it in to Scooter. There you can meet ClapTrap. Where you can see the burden Marcus gives towards Clappy knowing he's been around that guy too long.
It could be at New Haven. Marcus needs to ask about something with Pierce as Tan is is there talking about a location on the map. CalpTrap is following them around the Dust Bowl Garbage Heap of a town.
Don't know if Roland was ex Atlas in the movie.

What do we like about borderlands. Crazy guns, crazier characters, blood, gore, dumb jokes, and a badass villain. What did the movie have out of that list? Absolutely nothing. I feel like the writers looked at a list of the characters, found who seemed the coolest, then just ran with it. I highly doubt any of the writers even played the games

As a movie, it's maybe a 4 1/2, because there's so much no one would really understand not being a fan of the games. As a fan, it's like a 2. This is possibly the WORST borderlands media to ever be released.
I still say just follow the damn story of the first 2 games instead of the amalgamation we got. Like why not just do it the right way.... Every single time a retelling is done its done fucking horribly.
I really hope they address how horrible the movie was (in some way) in Borderlands 4

Almost near the end they stand in the crowd watching the fireworks, its just about 1 second
Anyone who knows me around here knows that I rarely go negative and try to see the best in shows/movies, even when I'm not a fan. But this one tested me hard. I am a massive Borderlands fan. It's my favorite game franchise of all time. I was skeptical from the casting and trailers, but was SO HOPEFUL that it could still be incredible. I went into the movie knowing it was only going to be based off the game's world and tried to have a mindset of enjoying the backgrounds of the worlds I love, some Easter Eggs, and feeling like I was placed into the game... However...
Ugh. So bad. OOF! I tried not to have expectations. But it was GOD AWFUL. It felt like no one involved had ever even seen clips of the game. From directors, to actors, to writers. The personalities didn't match at all (Tina was *not* nuttier than squirrel shit), the story was so out of place, there was no looting for a Looter-Shooter game, I only really caught two notable guns from the game (Lilith starts with an Infinity, then uses a green over-under rifle and a slow pistol the rest of the movie), there was loads of continuity errors, and for a game filled with dirty jokes, cursing, and gratuitous gore, the PG-13 movie didn't hit at all.
The color palate missed the game, no attempt at a cell-shaded look, Green Screens so bad it totally took the actors out of the scene, and they didn't even attempt to recreate the locations from the game.
As I said, I wanted SO BAD to love this movie and went in with a positive hope and tried not to nit pick. But the more I sit on it, the sadder I get. It doesn't help that Randy Pitchford has gone full keyboard warrior retweeting and attacking any critics, including blocking several of the community's biggest Content Creators and Streamers.
I was wanting to give a solid 75/100 to the movie, but left the theater feeling more if a 45/100, and after thinking more, an currently sitting at closer to a 10/100.

I totally agree with what your saying. It also is just a huge punch in the gut to only see one setting for the entire move. When only seeing sand the entire movie it just feels bland. There are so many interesting places to explore in the games that could’ve been included like wind shear waste, kroms canyon, bloodshot stronghold/dam, or even eridium promontory. They didn’t even include any cutscene like introductions for any characters. Such a missed opportunity and a waste of money.
Possibly the most bungled movie of the decade. Somehow worse that Dragonball Evolution to boot.
Roland is short and the siren is a cougar that’s what’s wrong.
Those are actually the least problematic issues of the movie.
Alright my perfect love action adaptation of borderlands: it’s a TV show first off. The whole show focuses on borderlands 1 and Roland and has him come across the other 3 vault hunters as the story progresses. He finds Lilith outside 9 toes and they kill him together, they run into mordecai in arid hills trying to kill more and Marley after hearing Distant sniper shots, they find brick trying to kill roid rage psycho. From there they move through the story almost exactly as it’s told in the first game while fleshing out the main vault hunters, and giving more story and perspective to combatant Steele. Lilith guides them by feeling if they’re ever don’t know where to go, and by the end of it once the destroyer is destroyed, it’s revealed that angel was speaking to only Lilith but then speaks to the other hunters. Show the satellite at the end, show a report of steeles death hitting general knoxxs death, roll credits, season 2 next year
I feel like that the super fans of this franchise could have made a better script for the movie. I didn't like this movie, but I don't want to hate on it.
Seems like Borderlands is one of the movies of all time.

This reminds me of Godzilla 98', Roland Emmerich wanted his own Jurassic Park movie so he took something that wasn't even close and proceeded to twist, warp, and ruin it til he ended up with a terrible movie that was exclusively self pleasing. It feels like Eli Roth wanted to make Guardians of The Galaxy and did the same to Borderlands.

Nope, dial it back to the early 1990s, the FIRST Mario Bros. Movie. Even as a then kid, that was wrong. I had friends & family in TX go watch it, family said save your $ until Netflix or Hulu decide to add it to their libraries and my pals went on to say it was great [ one has played the games, all of them and said too many holes but he enjoyed it. Other two have only touched Wonderlands... 8 think they needed to boot up 1 & 2 beforehand; and they hate 3 w/o playing it]

I think they forgot the magic of the character card intros in the games. Those worked great to give a unique feel and the flavor of a character in a very short time frame. The guns the characters used felt so generic action movie. That would have been easier if they had more characters using shields.

I wish I could say I was surprised, but I can't be. The casting choices aside, the whole premise of the movie hinges on the concept and story execution. That they had Gearbox themselves working on this and somehow thought their script and screenplay decisions were true to the games is what utterly baffles me. This is just gonna be remembered as another crap video game adaptation like the Doom movie with The Rock, and that's a shame considering how many great video game adaptations we've had in recent years.

Should've done a review with spoilers. Getting into the story spoilers really drives home how little they cared about making a Borderlands movie.
It’s was okay at best for me. Other than that, ironically enough, the best part of the movie for me was Cl4p-Tp.

....30 minutes is what I had to endure the second time I watched the movie to know why I didn't liked it the first time I watched it.
This was a Washed out Borderlands chapter.....where are my guns.....no explosions?....there are some....Borderland is all about explosions and guns...and the story...where do I begin...
Paying hand over fist for big name actors (who's casting for their roles was questionable when compared to the source material), out-of-touch storytelling, and trying to appeal to a broader audience by dumbing it down to PG-13 killed it. They were far too concerned with attempting to draw new fans into the franchise when all they had to do was showcase what made us all love BL to begin with. New fans would have happened naturally. Instead they just ended up making a watered-down movie that appeals to no one.
Very irritating that they can have the blueprint for success yet still somehow botch such a beloved IP. While it may not be the worst game movie ever made, it sure as hell had a long way to fall because of how much the fans love BL and how much hype was built around the movie. Not to mention the crazy amount money invested into it. Unfortunate.

I rarely see movies in theaters anymore, but I would have seen the movie if it was good. It’s people like me who don’t have a reason to go that they need to convince to watch, not people who don’t even know what borderlands is. We’re all 20-30 somethings… why the hell is the movie PG-13….
@@itzmasterz Agreed. Let us hope they can put their egos aside and gain insight and perspective from their mistakes. We are not likely to ever see another BL movie created now because of how hard this movie is flopping. But hopefully the lessons learned (if any) will carry on to save other future game movies from a similar fate. It just sucks that BL movie had to be an example of what not to do.
