But the thing is that it shouldn't even be necessary. He's doing good, but isn't this supposed to be the norm? How could we become so corrupted that everything is so much about money that people justify EVERYTHING with it, even obviously shady or close to criminal behavior?
I'd say that we've possibly come to a point where people hate the gambling websites and know that they're bad, but still appreciate Valve. For whatever reason. Is it only good PR? Just wtf.
I've come here form the streamer Trilluxe. He's admitted that he sponsored a website back in the days, but then had the realization that this was bad and that he shouldn't promote these things. However, he didn't even watch part 2 and thinks that "occasionally opening cases for special events" is still ok.
The whole tree is poisoned, and it starts with VALVE... Why isn't MyFreeFarm having such an issue? Because CS:GO or rather VALVE in general promote gambling via lootboxes. Stop this madness already.

Hello, an 18-year-old Dutch guy here, I'm sorry if this comment is a little long, but I just wanted to share my thoughts on this situation. To me personally, these videos have really shed light on a subject I didn't know too much about. Before these videos, I had of course heard of some gambling sites and had watched countless unboxings on UA-cam and Twitch, but I was not aware of how big of a problem gambling is to some people. I personally live in The Netherlands (I'm Dutch, who would've guessed.) and besides Belgium it is the only country in which you cannot open cases. For this reason, I have never had the urge to open cases because it is simply not possible. (It technically is, but I care too little about gambling to go through the necessary steps.) I noticed that in the chain you were describing the governments and laws of countries were missing. I know there is plenty of footage in the videos about exactly these subjects, but when it comes to that chain it is, in my opinion, an extremely important part that should not be forgotten. I honestly believe that the sole reason I have not opened any case is because of the fact that it is banned in The Netherlands. I think it's directly comparable to the "exclusion feature" which you described because you don't allow yourself to open cases whatsoever. However, in this instance you don't start opening them altogether, which kind of makes you oblivious to gambling, and it's also the reason you don't even feel the urge to take part in it at all. So the government and the laws in The Netherlands have in my opinion "saved" me from gambling and I think if other countries (preferably with a large population) also ban cases, far fewer people would get into gambling. I personally can't wrap my head around the principal of gambling and why it's even a thing. To me, the action of gambling is for a lack of a better word just plain stupid. Gambling will not make you money because the odds are against you. (And if they weren't, the people owing you the money would be in some serious trouble.) It will also not bring you happiness because of what I stated previously. (And if you think it will, have you even seen the videos?) Lastly, the people that own the casinos, sites, games and everything else are literally profiting and swimming in money which is generated by other people's sorrow. I know this is a controversial opinion, but to me, there is just simply no reason gambling should exist. That being said, I can sort of understand people that say it is just for fun, and it should only be done once in a while. However, I don't think this could be regulated and there would still be a significant amount of people that will gamble their lives away. As for kids, there is no way in hell you could ever convince me it's a good idea to let underage people gamble. It is basically not even their own fault anymore if, let's say, a 14-year-old gets addicted to gambling, they are just too vulnerable. I know it is really optimistic to say that we can just easily ban all types of gambling because, as stated in the video, it has (somehow) become pretty much synonymous with sports and esports and considering teams, such as heroic, are already struggling to be profitable this could very well lead to the complete collapse of the esports scene as we know it. I think the least we can do is make sure it is not the kids that fall victim to gambling, so we are, at least in some way, doing the morally correct thing and making sure that everyone who participates in gambling is at least 18 years of age. Speaking of morally correct things, I cannot, and I mean not even in the slightest bit, begin to fathom how you must have felt turning down that 120k a month sponsorship. I am very proud of you that you did not choose to go down that path, and I hope you will never doubt yourself for that decision. It was the morally correct decision, and that is worth way more than whatever money can buy. Thank you for that.
This comment actually got longer than I would have expected but as a last note I just want to say that I have played CS:GO consistently since I was 15 years old and that my view on this matter is probably (actually very likely) influenced by the fact that ever since I started playing CS:GO I have not been able to open cases. Because of this, I probably do not know any better than to call gambling a waste of money. If you have read this whole comment, first of all, thank you, and secondly, if you have anything to add or anything you want to say to me, I would gladly read your comment because I'm trying to learn and know more about this whole situation as well.

As a Dutch guy myself, I can relate to your feelings; I also could never open any cases and I think that has helped me think of gambling as a waste of money.
I would like to add that my parents also played a part here; my internet access was limited when I was younger, and if a gambling site was detected I would get kicked out by my own wifi network. Such behaviour of not allowing you to even look at these sites and lootboxes has helped massively I feel like.

    • @bearful
      @bearful 10 місяців тому +4

The reason people gamble is much like smoking (ex smoker here). Like it starts small and you give it a try and it seems like this fun little thing that picks up your mood as a "treat" or "because you've had a rough day". Now, Nicotine is also physically addicting but I suppose so is the dopamine from winning. It's easy to get swept up in wanting to feel that great all the time and before you know it it has become a habit you cant stop - "eh, I'll do one more roll", eh, one more smoke.
One thing thats interesting to me re gambling specifically is the mechanics of making it addicting - the graphics, the "near miss" visualization, how it induces the feeling of "gotta be the next one". I believe there has been some academic papers connecting gaming and irl casino methods for achieving this.
The socialization / normalization as well. Like, if all content creators you follow do it (and have the ability to selectively show only when they are successful in cases like youtube) it cant hurt to try, right? Its just for fun! And then people with more impulsive personalities get roped in. It's about mass exposure, casting the widest net to get the people who are most vulnerable to such tactics. As said in the video, 5% of users generate most of the revenue. The especially vulnerable who find themselves in a pit that does not end without help and eventually cannot cope with the shame, with being led to "wasting money for no reason" as you say that they take their own lives. There is a reason. There are many reasons and many more it's so hard to stop when there are few systems to do so.
This is the first video I've seen on the subject of CS:GO gambling because I listen to niche documentaries to fall asleep, but the very loud reactions to the wins woke me up, haha. Ultimately I'm glad I sleepily watched the rest.
Edit: And the worst part about quitting an addiction is that it's like literally one click or one trip to the store away to start it up again. I can't fathom how hard it must be to be addicted to hard drugs and go through that in addition to a potential criminal record. If anyone with any type of addiction reads this: You're not alone. It's worth it in the long run.

This idea of "you have to be dumb to gamble your life away" is just super out of touch with reality. Has nothing to do with intelligence, its all about the personality of the person and whatever is going on in their life, its a coping mechanism. I went to highschool with a guy who was super smart, straight A student who was passionate about programming, even back then when we were 16-17 he was already making significant ammount of money through making websites for small scale bussineses. After highschool we both went to different colleges so i didnt see him nor knew anything about him for 5 years til about a year ago when a mutual friend of ours told me he passed away in a car accident. While under the influence of meth he drove off the road at 190 km/h straight into a tree with another guy in a passanger seat, who also passed away. Back in highschool this man wouldnt even drink a shot of alcohol, he was drinking sprite during our graduation ceremony. Idk how he came to that point in his life but it for sure wasnt caused by him "being dumb".

Well said. Our brains all work differently and there are many substances or activities that affect us so differently.
Some people don't really enjoy alcohol. They've been drunk a couple of times in their life and it didn't do anything for them. There are some other people who are no less intelligent who just love it. I only recently realized that the first sort don't have any more willpower than the others but that it's just 100x easier for them to stick with one or two beers.
Unfortunately I belong in that second sort and realize now that I need to watch the hell out.

people who say shit like this just have 0 empathy ... that's simple as that ... they don't realize that it could happen to anybody around them or even themselves, they think they are "smarter" than that, just like the people who think that people who get scammed are the one responsible...
Like jeff explain, "it's designed to be addictive" just like scammers design their scam for a specific "audience", tech support scam mainly works on older people, why ? because they don't know shit about pc's therefore they don't even begin to be suspicious, but yet we blame the victims ... imagine telling a rape victim that it's her/his fault, it would be horrible, horrendous, insane, unforgivable and all that right ? but yet we casually tell people that are victim's of an industry designed to ruin life that it's THEIR fault ? fuck that.
my mother almost got scammed by a tech support, luckily i was at home that day and told her that nothing was wrong with her pc, that nothing will happen and that the people she had on the phone were scammers, how did she ended up in a situation like this ? she typed the name of her health insurance wanted to go on their website but didnt pay attention, clicked on the first link and tada, a page saying that her pc is infested or smth poped and the stress took over... their shit is designed to make you stress and think less by reassuring you that everything is gonna be taken care of ... some people fall for it, other's don't but it doesn't mean that they are stupid, or ffs that it's their fault
it's the same with gambling, considering the amount of exposure, the fact that most start super young, that there is no age verification and so on make gambling site the culprit, not the person who got exposed and got tempted ... i'm not gonna hope for theses people to find out what it's like to be addicted to something because i do not wish them to suffer but just watching the interview with garret brought tears in my eyes seeing how shameful he felt, the moment when he realized how much he really lost was way too hard and even typing this make me see the scene again... hiding the pain and shame under some kind of half assed smile and shit ...

Before watching this series I lived under the impression that people with gambling addiction were just lacking self control. Thank you for making me aware that it is indeed a disease and people do not need judging (not implying that I did) they just need help and support. It was enlightening to get an understanding of how and why people tend to gamble and have this whole process, a process I could not comprehend, explained. One thing that really threw me off when watching this video is seeing people using the argument that this whole thing isn't a problem because it's the same as drinking, such as at 23:32.
To me it just seems like they're missing the entire point, because yeah, gambling and drinking can be seen as being somewhat similar, since it's perfectly fine to do it every once in a while so long as it doesn't go out of control. But the thing is, if you're going to drink, how do you get the alcohol?
If you go buy some at a store and you look young, they'll ask you to show some sort of ID to prove you're of the legal drinking age.
If you go to a bar it's the same story, and chances are they'll even refuse to serve you if they think you had enough to drink for the night.
But when it comes to those unregulated gambling sites, no one is going to try to verify that you are over 18, and they certainly won't try to stop you from gambling too much.
The point is that you are most likely to develop an addiction when you start gambling/drinking at a young age, and to keep using the same comparison, those websites are doing something akin to selling alcohol to underage people behind the grocery store. So chances are they'll get addicted after trying it, come back to them for more, and it all goes downhill from there...
So no, the problem isn't gambling, the problem is the websites that enable underage people to gamble, and make money off of their addiction.

Regarding the "shame" stigma with gambling. There is no shame on people with addictions who need help. The shame lies with the companies and people making money off people's misery and misfortune, but also shame lies with these people enabling, and making excuses for gambling.

120k A MONTH is such an unfathomable number to reject. 120k a month is so absurdly wild that I wouldn't blame ANYONE for taking it, hell given the opportunity I would not have made the same decision as you, you are simply a better man than me. Rejecting it purely on a moral and ethical obligation to protect children and people from gambling addictions and not only that spending 4k on codes for people seeking help. This is by far THE most noble thing I've ever seen from a content creator on ANY platform over the 15 years I've been on the internet. You are a man of men. One of the most respectable content creators on the internet period. Subscribed for life. I wish you all the best.

He's not better for being stupid. Parents are responsible for knowing what their kids do online. A kid can't waste money on a gambling site unless their parents enable it.

As someone who has struggled with gambling it really restores my faith that you are speaking up about this and in such a critical and well put together manor as well as offering and highlighting the means for help. I hope there is more change in the CSGO gambling scene inspired but your videos! Great stuff!

I'm glad LTT/LTX/WAN-Show picked your story up, because I can tell you with a 95% confidence that almost nobody else, with any significant amount of influence, will do it. Gambling is the hand that feeds them, and you don't bite the hand that feeds you (unless you're my cats).

This is awesome Jeff. Hope you feel proud because you are walking the walk.
I thought you might be taking the easy way out recently, and like the comments you quoted, wouldn't have held anything against you. But what you are doing is brave, and it takes a lot to decide to act in a situation like this.
    Hope change comes.
