the battery hot swap tip is fire!
🙌 It such a time saver on set! Thanks for dropping by Carlos!
Great tips Tyler. Thanks!
Thanks Josh!
I love how you organized the content in this video, Tyler! Super valuable info 👌
I appreciate that!
Your videos really helped me with my Komodo X, thanks!
That’s awesome!
Yo! thanks for this video. I keep learning here. Cheers
Glad you liked it dude! Appreciate you! 🙏
My guy! I went to watch a video and get psyched about potential switching camera systems to the Komodo X and this is the first video I find. Great info! Many thanks!
LET'S GOO!!!!! KX is amazing, dude. KX+Ian would be a deadly combo
Great tips! I picked up the komodo 6k about 4 months ago and am loving it!
Nice! I saw your Komodo video. It was great!
@@TylerEdwards Thanks Tyler!
the image at 00:38 🤯🤯🤯 where is my credit card
😂
Thanks for sharing this. Battery swap = so helpful given long initialization time on K-X and VR. On pre-record I wish there was some on-screen indicator when you go into pre-record. I seem to turn it on and then forget it at least once on every shoot! I realize the on-screen record button and framing change to yellow once you press the shutter but it would be helpful to have some indicator indicating you’re even in pre-record mode.
That would actually be amazing. There’s probably an icon and I’m just to dumb to see it 😂
Hey Tyler first off thank you for all your red Komodo KX content, I’m very close to buying one .. I’ve been scouring the internet and there’s actually no video tutorial on the red Komodo KX I’m hoping you can make one soon 🙏🏾
What would you be looking for in a tutorial?
@@TylerEdwardshonestly everything, how to use the camera properly, the goal post and traffic lights, exposure basically how tyo hget the best from the camera as a complete Newbie. 🙏🏾
This camera needed some MORE custom function buttons...I'll die on that hill.
I wouldn’t hate that. Maybe long press of the top buttons?!
@@TylerEdwards yeh that was my original suggestion based on how you can already use the up and down arrows combined to lock the system
Didn’t know about face tracking thanks dude!
It’s pretty awesome!
Hi Tyler, thank you for this great video! I am close to buying the Komodo X. Could you please tell me if the fan noise of the Komodo X is acceptable? I am shooting a lot of interviews indoors in a quiet and intimate atmosphere.
Minimal fan noise. It has never been an issue for me. Definitely much quieter than any light I’ve used for sure
Thanks for making this video! I'm really looking to getting into the RED ecosystem this being one of my first future/big purchases. I was wondering is there anywhere that has a breakdown of what you need to just get started? or your rig setup? I just don't want to buy the body, card, screen and batteries, but need something additional to get going and start shooting projects. Thanks!
I made a rig video that’s a great solution for solo-op stuff and can be scaled for different needs!

@@TylerEdwards thank you so much boss!
Solid bro! Just ordered the DSMC 3 7" monitor. Are you still loving it? Can't wait!
Absolutely loving it! Stoked for you!
Hey Tyler! Awesome tips;) but how do u mount e Outrigger handle which is sharing same pins connector as e new dmc3 monitor?
Monitor base first then outrigger on that. Monitor base has pass through pins for record trigger
Thanks for sharing! Goin to be useful when 5” dmc3 release 🤞🏻😅
Can you custom white balance on a RED camera? Like with using a gray or white card?
Yes. It does a good job of just reading the scene in my experience as well. But it’s also not necessary while shooting Raw because you can change Kelvin later with no damage to the image.
What ISO would you use for scenes with lots of highlights? Any tips.
setting exposure on red komodo x (my approach)

Talk to me in detail on how you're using the NTG, specifically. Are you running Mic or Line for your input? How much gain are you using on the microphone for optimal results? I've had some floor noise I can't seem to get rid of. I've tried lowering the gain on the mic and raising it on the camera - and vice versa. I seem to get artificial clipping and no fidelity on the audio. Are you running it -20 on the mic?
mic input phantom power. usually keep it at around -4db
@@TylerEdwards how are you not frying your mic with phantom power? Isn't the ±48V way too much for the NTG? And the NTG has the internal lithium ion battery, no? Why use phantom? Sorry for the 20 questions. Just been struggling on getting clean audio on my Kx. Which wasn't the case with the first gen Komodo.
I am using the NTG5 which requires phantom power. I haven't tried the video mic ntg yet, but I ordered a cable from mutiny which I plan to test.
@@TylerEdwards Ah, yah the NTG5 is a different animal together. Been struggling a bit with the 3.5mm powered shotgun mics. Will be watching to see how you fare. Cheers on the channel, keep up the great videos.
any good way to mount the dsmc monitor to a gimbal?
Get the longer RMI cable and then mount the monitor like you would any other monitor
Hey just wondering, how does the face detect autofocus on the KX compare to the autofocus on the OG Komodo?
They’re both only okay in performance
Hi tyler are you filming your talk head with a red ? If yes, what do you think about youtube compression? Thanks a lot😊
Yes I am. UA-cam Shore likes to compress. I usually export to h265 and have been as pleased with the results as you can be with UA-cam compression haha.
@@TylerEdwards thanks à lot for your time
One thing I am confused about. To get great audio like you did with your shot gun mic. Are you able to feed directly into the camera body or do you need the extra I/O module?
I’m using this in this video: amzn.to/3YmfAJf
What ISO do recommend when shooting
800 is a great starting point
Also ISO is only Metadata and can be changed in post with R3D. So whether it's 12k or 100 it won't matter to the actual image file as it doesnt burn into the image. The exposure should be controlled with the T stop and shutter.
You’re correct it can be changed. But changing it in post will change the middle grey point affecting the information in highlights vs shadows. That’s why even if you can change it, getting the look/exposure in camera with the combo of iris, shutter, ND and ISO is still a good idea if you’re trying to get the most highlight or shadow information
@@TylerEdwardsua-cam.com/video/QeJN3UIUyHk/v-deo.htmlsi=oKELlI-pdW-lRfMl
Im getting a lot of noise in the shadows on my original komodo when shooting day time high dynamic range scenes. Is it because my ISO is too high when set at 800?
Did you black shade the sensor?
Yeah i did
Hey dude - just got my K-X and am traveling soon and wanted to run my iphone as a monitor via Red Control but can't get the picture to show via the USB-C cable. Any ideas?
Need to turn on personal hotspot and also have cell reception for it to work
Hmm I thought the KX creates its own WiFi signal through Adhoc and doesn’t need the phone to have cell signal? Can it be used with the usbc cable only to reduce the latency vs WiFi connected?
Hey Tyler, have you had issues not being able to power your NTG 5 directly into the camera? I have the NTG 5 and I'm using the Komodo Blue XLR to 5 pin directly into the Komodo and I don't get any audio feedback.
Also what Cable do you use to connect the two?
No issues here. I run the mid49 xlr adapter and run the ntg5 into that with excellent results
