It depends on the generation of Camry you're talking about. In 2007 the 9th generation Corolla was still on sale, and that looked a lot like the 2006 Camry. Toyota eventually made a Camry-looking Corolla for the 2009 model year. The Avalon was always different looking though.

YESSS i have a white 2009 Yaris S sedan automatic, fully loaded. Alloy wheels, spoiler, ground effects, fog lamps, sport seats, leather steering wheel and shift knob, premium stereo. Added TRD rear sway bar. This car literally feels like a tiny Camry. I don't have the urge to sell it for something bigger, had it almost 5 years. I only wish the arm rests were padded. This car will get 30mpg city 40 mpg highway consistently I swear, that's how it always calculates. One of the most enjoyable and reliable sub compacts you can find.

This car will keep running as long as the owner wants to keep it running. The 00s were peak Toyota: they had efficiency, comfort, and build quality but weren't full of complicated electronics. The materials aren't the nicest but they're durable. It's a shame Toyota gave up on the cheap subcompact market.
You're a few years younger than me but I know what you mean by the computer lab. I had to go to 5th and 6th grade in a broke school in the hood. Windows XP was nothing new, Windows Vista was on the horizon, yet my school only had beige Pentium III computers running Windows 2000. The school I'd come from in the suburbs (same district) had a new computer lab running Windows XP. When I got to 7th and 8th grade back in the suburbs (same district) everything was Windows XP and 7 was about to come out. XP was probably the greatest OS Microsoft ever made and it's just a refreshed 2000 so it wasn't too bad. When I got to high school the computers were finally up to date with 7.

My dad bought an early Echo in February 2000 and put 320,000 miles on it until he gave it to me in 2006. Consequently, he needed to replace his commuter car, and the Yaris was on the docket. Comparing the two, the Echo was 200-300lbs lighter, had about the same trunk space, and more rear headroom. I've come to appreciate the hatches more, and wish the SE treatment of 2013 was across the board.
Toyota never gave the subcompacts much love. The first generation Yaris you talked about had sport models... stiffer rear beams, similar to the xA and first generation xB sold here, and the same seat padding and material (sportier bolsters, and so on). The Echo was the lightest of the 1NZ-FE cars, but also had the smallest, least aggressive tires, brakes, and tallest gearing (via a 3.53 final drive, as opposed to the xB's 4.3 final drive to combat weight... Echo was still quickest, and could have been quicker still. The 1.5L was the sport engine around the world, and that's all America was given... we were spoiled, and didn't even know it. Hell, it was a subcompact accelerating with cars a class above, like the Corolla, Civic, and Neon. It even competes or beats a lot of contemporary cars because again, power to weight.
Another appreciation for the Echo, is unlike the Yaris and basically everything these days: the rear fender "boxes." Rather than being a round blob, it's a subtle line resembling the boxed flare of a bugeye WRX or R34 GTR... just less extreme. The coupes, in particular, are my favorite, since they have a longer door and a sloping b-pillar, and slightly stretched out quarter window versus the sedan (though they otherwise are the same dimensionally/proportionally).
