Your Turn To Role: How it looks in your head.
It’s Thursday Night: How your campaign actually is.
truth
And I wouldn't change it for the world
Perfectly put!!!
dat feel when you can't see things in your head
I literally went to love your comment like on Facebook.... maybe I should put my phone down
"Your Turn to Roll" will forever hold a special place, but this is simply amazing, and will certainly grow on me.
I couldn't have said it better!
Your turn to roll is great. But I like this
Yes
Yo, Your Turn to Roll goes hard.
Will grow on me, that's what I feel... hope... wish...
"Your Turn to Roll" is special, it's epic and shows a bond between characters. "It's Thursday Night" is more about showing the group and community, and I am loving it. Both of these are beautiful for their own reasons
Yeah it makes sense they didn't try to top Your Turn to Roll. It had to be something different
I am a newer fan. What is “Your turn to roll” specifically referring to?
@@Icosiol "your turn to roll" was campaign 2's second intro. it accompanied an animation of the mighty nein and played at the start of the episodes from about episode 30 onwards.

@@SuperJoeMike T1J is a Critter??? Hell yeah, love your videos my dude, I'm always learning something new.
they go hard with every song they make. Sam doesn't just go ez mode. He is an artist :)
it goes without saying how beautiful all their singing voices are, but for some reason i just really really love matt’s
Matt is an awesome singer! I wish he got more chances to do it
Very disney-esque which isnt a bad thing for this stuff
@@SpookySkellyman same! e.g. i know nothing about fire emblem fates but i love listening to the song he sang for it
"how do you want to do this ?"
Okay I agree they're all great, but I can't figure out who sings the chorus! Because whoever sings that is AMAZING. I love the chorus so much. Is THAT Matt?
This is so fun and epic! (And Laura & Ashley mouthing "Oh fuuuuuuuu--" made me laugh.)
Looking forward to your cover! You'd sound epic too!
I saw Ashley do it first - didn’t notice Laura until a few more viewings!
The goofy slow mo posing reminds me of Marisha punching Taliesen in the first C2 opening lmao
fancy seeing you here
Dude I love your music, didn't know you were a critter
They really just...flexed so hard on all of us. The...VOCALS. the harmonization, the drums, I DIDNT KNOW I NEEDED TO HEAR LIAM, MATT AND TALESIN SING UNTIL NOW AND I-
SAME I DIED
Right? Now I want them to do ad&d - the musical
Taliesin and Matt harmonizing makes me cheer every time, it's real gooooood 🙌🏻🙌🏻
That lilt to Matt's voice when he sang his part ("We all share the same goal") gives me literal chills every time I hear it, love everything about this
I feel the EXACT SAME. I love it SO much
I wanna see a recording of them making this showing who's singing. Seems interesting to see how the song comes together
If you turn on captions it says who's singing
Me too we definitely need a bts for this!
@@ienzio7795 except it says Travis when Liam is still singing lmao
If you turn on your subtitles, it lists who is singing each line.
@@shadenyite7657 No thats actually Travis, unless I am wrong I heard a slight difference between his and Travis' voice singing that line
I love how Talisan's harmony makes him sound as eldrich as he really is in real life.
I heard he didn't actually record anything, it just appeared in the final edit
@@cu4n hahahahahaaa... together with ancient harp sounds
The two episodes of "Gather Your Pub" from "Gather Your Party" are well worth looking up for those who might like more of Taliesin's vocal talents. Mostly singing together with Erika and the guests, but he does a couple solos, too. (On Geek & Sundry's Twitch channel, or _possibly_ elsewhere, if you seek diligently...)
It's beautiful isn't it? I love Matt's "we all share the same goal"
I wanted more of Liams godly voice
When?
i still can't believe "from the healer" is sung by Travis, sounds exactly like Liam
Are you sure it’s Travis. I can’t tell a different between healer and renegade lyrics
@@amatanata me neither, but the subtitles say so
@@amatanata Yup, it's Travis! He confirmed it.

Sam reigel is a legend and we must appreciate that he still gets to do his music even though scanlan is no longer at the table. His writing and direction are amazing with how he wants to pull the emotion out from the consumer. Well done. I love the prior song but there is something truly magical when the whole cast come together
He and his brother-in-law, Peter Habib, create amazing music
We need a behind the scene of all the chaos of them throwing everything around and shouting like lunatics- the Chaos Crew at its finest.
I simply want to know who tf threw a pencil at Sam 🤣🤣
I'd just like to see all the slow motion scenes in normal speed 😂
0:42 that transition from Travis to Liam was smooth as heck. Even keeping the same step position and momentum.
For sure. This was a really good song in general, I think and way more of the cast can sing than I realized.
I didnt really notice the shift from Liam to Travis till I listened to the song again xD
@@DarkPretender205 at 0:49 Liam said on Twitter he sang both the "From the Healer" and "to the renegade" lines
Edit: misunderstanding, Liam sang the second line, Travis sang the 1st, originally the CC said Liam sang the first and he was asked if he sang the "to the renegade" line and he said he did, but never said he sang the first, CC has been updated and Sam has confirmed Travis then Liam, I guess what they say about assuming is true in this case haha
@@brandonokeeffe1193 I've wanted to watch Liam perform theatre for a while but now I also want to see him in a musical.
holy shit yeah, going through it frame by frame shows how much attention to detail there was
God that Matt/Taliesin harmony is SICK! Beautiful work, guys
I didn't know I needed to hear Taliesin sing. Apparently, I did.
I just realized that the group shots going around the table are the cast's reactions to Matt saying "How do you want to do this?" (major hype and screaming) and Marisha saying "You can certainly try" (each of them doing something weird like they're in character, "trying").
Honestly brilliant, and slowly taking over Your Turn To Roll as my favorite theme. Love it!
OH SHIT THAT MAKES SENSE
1:04 This moment captures two important things about Critical Role: Marisha will ALWAYS hit the person sitting next to her with her flailing, and Travis -- despite being built like a brick shithouse -- is a big baby.
“brick shithouse” 😭😂
"he's built like a brick shit house, how's he gone down like that"
BRICK SHITHOUSE I'M WHEEZING
I once helped my brother demolish a brick shithouse.
It wasn't as strong as we expected. Mostly, we were simply sweeping armfuls of bricks into a wheelbarrow.
Honestly the travis hair swish of fear is what made the entire video for me. Look again, look at that beautiful swish as Marisha goes at him.
I like how the characters are moving at a normal pace, but the real people are in slow motion, kind of like how D&D combat takes place over a couple of minutes rather than hours
That’s actually genius
So it should be the other way around, right? 🤔
@@Bavio Just think about an actual table-top encounter you've experienced. You experience yourself (the player) going at normal speed. In comparison your character is moving in slow motion because in the span of your 2 hour session it only manages to do a minute's worth of stuff.
@@mhelvens How does that make sense? Doing something in a shorter span of time is slow motion?
@@operationdeadmemes3498 The characters are doing their one minute of fighting in the span of two hours. That's longer, not shorter.
To think all this stemmed from a Birthday party, makes my heart warm up. Shows you just how good people can be when they enjoy themselves doing things they love.
Was thinking the same thing, insane how far they came. At least something is right in this world.
It's amazing, that I agree. Sure, you need a certain base of talent, but it's them being genuine that brought this so far.
What's really crazy is that years later dipshits still post this comment as if it's original.
I think of that every time they hit another milestone. The kickstarter that went way beyond what they expected. Amazon Prime picking them up for a second season (and likely more). It all started as a Birthday game that was supposed to just be a one off.
@@chand911 does it have to be original if it's just true?
Those higher vocals layered over top at 1:20 give me goosebumps everytime!
Trying to figure out if it's true vocals from the cast, or just a really good synthesized sound. It's a little deeper in the mix, and I don't have a great producer's ear. Either case, I agree. Also cool how the layered "vocals" are echoed immediately by something that sounds a bit like a mizmar. Lovely!!!
@@illuvius32 I hear the
upper octave vocals starting at 1:05 (which must be Laura’s soaring voice). They give me goosebumps every time. It’s so beautifully done.
Gotta love laura's voice
Edit: and Ashley's voice
The harmony and orchestration is superb
@@dieseIboy yes!! everyone talks about the second one but both of these give me chills ✨
For those who may want to know: Turning on the captions will tell you who is singing which part!
I've listened to the Liam and Travis part multiple times over, but to me it definitely sounds like Liam singing both lines even though the subtitles say Travis sang the second line 0:47. Unless I missed another section with Travis singing I don't think he had a part other then visuals?
@@ericbrueningsen4877 someone said that liam in twitter confirmed that it was his line, so i think it was a mistake
Also there is uncaptioned "it's thursday night" from Sam
@@ericbrueningsen4877 That, or Robbie singing the second line. I just cannot hear Travis' (nor Marisha's) solo lines in this song.
@@HabarudoD You can hear Marisha say "You can certainly try." at 1:00, but I can't hear any lines from Travis nor Robbie....though I'm not sure if Robbie is a full-time C3 cast member since he's not in the group shot at the end. Perhaps its only as a limited engagement?
You're a god thank you so much
I am so unbelievably stoked for a behind the scenes of this, if they do one.

0:44 - my absolute favorite part (okay, aside from Matt's hair magic), when the transition from Travis to Liam running is so smooth and picks up in their parts of the music as well! This is *chef's kiss*
I thought Liam sang the whole part. Are the captions incorrect?
@@JPIQQG No, the captions are correct - Travis sings "From the healer", Liam continues "to the renegade" =) Their singing voices sound really similar, they sync together amazingly well, but if you listen very closely, Liam's voice is a hint... sharper? I don't know how to describe it better, sorry!
@@cleosan8150 Their voices match the visual.
This is definitely the better version of the opening. It's gloriously epic.

@@Smitty-hr2mg I don't see how it's self indulgent, but this version is definitely better.
@@Smitty-hr2mg It's not any more self-indulgent than this one. The difference is they had to make the animated one quickly to replace this one, so of course it's not quite as good. (I still like what they did with such short time, it's not trash, after all)

Liam absolutely has a face for movies
Immediately pictured him as a protagonist in a Mummy type movie
Definitely!
Fun tidbit, but he AND Travis both starred in a movie! It was about aliens and such and it was so fun to see them acting in person versus voicing.
@@Reverse2057 Do you remember the title? Additionally Matt also was the villain in at least the third Mythica movie.
Legit. He has a bit of a Harrison Ford vibe imo.
Like a hotter and younger Sam (O')Neill.. ?!? ;) Liam for Jurassic Park :D
Matt's "how do you wanna do this" radio-esque whisper is unreasonably cool
I NEED more Liam and Taliesin singing in my life! Liam has this incredibly sultry quality to his voice that gives me goosebumps!
It only took me watching 6 times before I realized that they're "on" the battlemap in the opening shot. LOL. Truly excellent!!

Two things:
- I would love to listen to the instrumental version of this.
- I would absolutely LOVE to sing and listen to this at a live show!!!
I was JUST thinking that an instrumental version of this would be EPIC!
It would be great! the instrumental is so cool, and it would also be a great way to sing to it :D
I really hope they reuse the music for if/when they do the animated intro. I'm not sure if some of the lyrics would fit, but the the music itself would be so epic to have!
I know a way to get an instrumental version! It’s not the all the way instrumental but it sounds really good!
@@fearnescalloway Will you share with us?
I'm never going to get over how hard they went with this intro. I was blown away and captivated by this before I was even a fan of Critical Role. I can't even express how sexy this is.

I'm actually so blown away by Taliesin in this. His Harmonies with Matt were incredible

At least Robbie. That they include him into the intro video for the campaign 3 speaks volumes. And makes us new Robbie fanboys happy
Man, I didn’t even THINK of that!
@@i-am-your-conscience he is in it yes but he’s also not in the end scene showing the original cast so it makes me think he’s still just an extended guest character and not a full time cast member

Your songs always leave one inspired and excited!
Seriously I wasn't sure if anyone else noticed that. Its wonderful on the ears.
Oh neat, I didn't know there was an actual term for that, I just thought it was basic harmonization! When I first heard it, I had to replay that part a dozen times, it was so elegantly done! From 00:37 to 00:41, when they sing "he mi-i-ight" is there a musical term for the multi-note pattern it ends with? (In contrast to ending with a solid note like from :44 to :47.)
The whole song is full of harmonics, the part i was describing is just the most easily recognisable. Usually, when you have two voices together singing different notes at the same time, you calculate the distance between the 2 notes and that is how you name the interval. It dependends on the distance between the 2 notes. Hope that helped a bit :)

Everyone's anticipating hearing the crowd sing this at a live show, but how about getting to hear the _cast_ sing it on stage, live and unprocessed?
I desperately hope this actually happens.
oh hell yeah
Both? Both. We want both
Well Ashley's part will sound basically the same for sure. They had to teach her how to "sing bad" for The Last of Us because her voice was "too perfect"
If you think live performances are unprocessed, oh boy (or not boy), you're not ready to hear an actual raw take (and you're ready to learn a lot about sound engineering, which I encourage you to do)
Even amazing voices, if unprocessed (but still rendered through devices such as microphones, speakers, etc) will always sound like shit. Because microphones do not work like the human ear does, and speakers, electronic circuits etc add another layer to that. So you actually already have to do a decent amount of processing just to end up with something that sounds *kind of* similar to what you would hear if you were standing near the person and hearing them directly
I've recorded and mixed a decent number of singers/rappers and various instrument, and raw takes, even of great performers and with great microphones, always sound like shit. What we most of the time call "raw takes" are not raw strictly speaking, the processing is just kept to a minimum, without the "bonus" shiny aesthetic effets such as delays, autotune, distorsion, fancy reverbs and stuff like that
So I feel like the processed/unprocessed dichotomy doesn't really make sense. Stuff is just more or less processed, and sounds more or less like what you would "naturally hear" if you were directly standing near the performer.
PS: Ashley's part would not sound the same irl. But live, with good sound engineers, it might.
I'm pretty sure none of their voices are being pitch-corrected, they are voice actors after all so with just a bit of work it's probably very easy for them to sing in tune.
Don't get me wrong, she sounds like she's an awesome singer, but no one's voice sounds like that irl. The ethereal and very spectacular vibe she has is greatly helped by the compression, reverbs and delays she has going on there. That voice sounds like it's echoing in the dark, like it's calling from ages ago. Those effects add a lot to the pretty strong and deep voice she seems to have.
'Your Turn to Roll" felt like the beginning of an adventure, this feels like the song of victory after that adventure.
Travi's singing voice is so buttery smooth...?? DAMN! So epic when each sang their part as their characters showed up!!
I am losing my mind. The outfits, the scenes at the table, Taliesin's harmony, Robbie in the opening, and everything was so beautifully made. You can really see how much Critical Role has grown over the years. Just wonderful. Absolutely wonderful.

@@WardenRose I was just gonna say that!
1:14
The way Matt’s hair flows in this shot is just perfect.
My favorite part of this is how, in the "Explorers" segments, each person is so perfectly represented as characters from a 1920's-style expeditionary force. Matt is the intellectual, who looks surprised and confused to be included in this venture. Laura, Marisha and Ashley are the adventuresses who refuse to take a back seat and let the men do all the important stuff. Travis is the "muscle" who knows when NOT to fight; Liam just looks damn good! I can completely imagine Robbie as the pilot and Sam as the questionable side-kick who seems to have connections, but you're just not sure he's on your side. And I swear, I totally expected a Cockney accent to come out of Taliesin's mouth. This is glorious!
Yeah they nailed this intro
Oh my god at 1:11 hearing Sam's background vocal "Its Thursday Niiight!" And then seeing it written on the blackboard beside him in the shot 🤣🤣

Yessss. I fully squealed when his voice popped up.
Yes he definetly has to sing more. I never heard him sing before but it's amazing
I think this is the first time we hear Liam's singing voice on record. And it's amazing
0:05 they didn't use a fan for this, Matt's hair just _does_ that.
It's Ashley that COMPLETELY carries the backing vocals of the track at 1:06, right?
She does. Along with Laura. Literally what does Marisha bring to this table?
@@Blackburn6969 bro????
I really want to see a full archaeologist-based intrigue/mystery campaign now similar in aspect to The Mummy and such films. This opening is great!
That would be an amazing miniseries. Could easily do 8 or 10 sessions and leave plenty open for further "seasons"
I once ran a one-shot with that premise. The players where all members of an organization called ExAMIn
Exploration and Mystery International 😊
To be honest, I was pretty proud of that acronym 😁
There is a demiplane of dread that is based on sand dunes, buried monuments, and animal-faced undead.
the call of cathulu one shot was kinda close
Especially if they ran it in Pulp Cthulhu
Is there gonna be a Behind the scenes for this? I would to everyone singing.
I'm sure they did make one!
I really hope so
666th like
I want to see the BTS of the slowmo shots 😂
Sam’s voice is so damn good, it’s no wonder he’s been in musical theatre since he was like 4
God, I will NEVER get over the ladies' layered voices on top during the beginning of the second chorus, and then their harmony afterwards!
When you have a cast of people you love to death and they all sing together in harmony you can't help but feel chills.
I really want to hear Matt sings Be prepared from the lion king. His voice would fit so well.
Matt's pitch range is a lot higher than that.
@@EightThreeEight I don’t wanna jump to conclusions, but are you saying that he’s a soprano?
Yes please
@@EightThreeEight Is it? Based on his speaking voice I would have guesses him to be a fairly low baritone, and his singing here clearly sounds like it is in a fairly high range for his voice.
@@cjhenderson61 I'm no expert on singing, but I always thought Be Prepared was made for a bass, whereas Matt sounds more like a tenor. I'm a tenor, and I can only just shift my pitch down low enough for it.
I miss this already
So sad that they switched the intro. This looks so much better than the botched rotoscope version. Also the timing and the transitions are just perfect.
absolutely!
Agree
Can you imagine the odds of having so many nice friends, something already super rare, and they like to play dnd, and they are good at, and they are all voice actors, they can role-playing , they CAN FUCKING SING, and are responsible, mature people and trustable to run a bussiness with. Incredible!
50/50 Either it happens or it doesn't.
I made many of my friends through d&d so idk.
If you roll enough dice, improbable things happen all the time...
I know, what are the odds. It really is a blessing of a wonderful group finding their way to each other and one can only hope that bonds like these will bless as many people as possible.
It’s luck, this didn’t start as a big group of friends it was some of liams friends then talisan and marisha helping Matt run the session. Crazy how this all turned out
Theres something profoundly overwhelming about this when you've been a critter since the grainy G&S days, truly beautiful growth
Absolutely. I've been watching since Episode 5 of Campaign 1, and this hits me right in the feels.
so glad the layout got better too 😅 that green sure was... something
True
And you got me tearing up. I love them so much!
Aaaaah the good old days, when sound was cut off for some minutes. When the sound was glitchy and piercing the headphones. When critters sent them gifts and drinks and told Laura where her stuff was at the table :P
But at the same time, the look on their faces every time they realized how many people are actually into this.
Huzzah to their growth!
Sam blinding himself with the instant camera will never NOT make me laugh.
The shot of Matt screaming in slow motion is so awesome! Serotonin hit I didn’t know I needed 😂
1:15 Words cannot express how much I fucking _love_ that shot of Matt.
Came here to say that!
This!
Same ❤️
I'm sorry, I just can't get over Sam "The Mad Lad" Riegel flashing himself straight in the eyes with the camera at 1:10
I wish we could see the photo that came from that 😅
it doesn’t get any less funny with each rewatch XD
Matt and Laura’s hair blowing looks amazing in that last frame.
I liked this one so much better than the newer one :/
EVERYONE sang! And Robbie is here! This is so amazing and Critical Role is blowing me away with production value since the start of C3. Can't wait to see what’s next :)
I think with each featured guests they'll film a bumper for them to fill in that gap in the intro. Super good idea!
Robbie is here *for now.
He is not at the end of the group shot.
@@DrInsanity987 Idk!! It seems like Robbie is going to be in the intro permanently, I mean, he sings in the song during his part!
@@SailorDee I'll cry if/when robbie leaves 😭😭😭
@@SailorDee Thing is the subtitles says it's Travis. So they likely would have the guest re-sing that bit maybe. Tho still confused about Travis as there is no sign of him returning to the campaign.
Honestly, after hearing this, I want to hear the entire cast singing Your Turn To Roll in parts like they did here.
Came back to rewatch the best intro
this isn't the original 80s season 2 intro
@@Feasco exactly, it has an actual epic song with chorus here
This is the better intro and it sucks that they felt forced to change it.
If I had to guess, it wasn't the stupid backlash, but I mean come on... Robbie isn't on the show anymore
@@PeterIsATeacher the opening didnt have robbie at all since he left
hey what’s the controversy about? i haven’t heard anything about it
@@Typical7 the original "it's thursday night' theme has Robbie, he doesn't sing but he's in the sequence.
@@PeterIsATeacher we are literally commenting on it, i know he was at the start of the campaign on it, he wasn't shown after the episode where he left the group
This looks like it was so much fun to film. You all outdid yourselves. LOVE it
Really hope they put out a behind the scenes
Matt and Taliesin's harmonies are bliss, I love the new intro
The levels of serotonin their harmonies gave me is ridiculously high.
At this point, I've watched this dozens of times. I think this is my favorite thing you guys have produced. I'm so glad y'all exist
This gets better every single time I watch it, and I've watched it a lot.
Lol Ashley and Laura mouthing "oh fuck" had me in stitches. And Laura's power stance at the end is perfection. Get it!
Seriously, her tricep game… swoon.
Matt Mercer's "War Face" at 1:14 is one of the most inspiring things I've ever seen.
This. It's the coolest moment of the whole video.
RIGHT?!
Hell yes!
This totally conveys the passion Matt has for this game, these friends, and amazing campaign series. I may or may not have set this (and other group shots) as my wallpapers :D
his ancestors were scottish - imagine THAT coming at you on the battlefield 1000 years ago in a kilt lol
Our game night is Thrusday night too, for like the last 10 years. So this song has an extra special meaning to me and gives me literal chills!
I wish they had a behind the scene for this opening too. This slaps!
I’m a 34 year old man and seeing this just made me feel like a kid all over again
Haha im 47 and it made me feel it too .
Very epic.
I'm 50 and having played RPGs for over 37 years it's awesome that my obsession is so popular now.
I’m 50 and love this , have been playing d and d since I was 15 and could afford the books from Walden’s books .
53 here. Same.
I love how much popcorn and random shit was thrown at Sam throughout the various takes they did. You can see it all over the mat in the background lol. We soooo need a behind the scenes/making of!
I was initially off-put by the incredibly detailed camera shots of everyone's faces but the song is incredible. absolutely unfair how good of singers the cast are
I prefer this video to the one they’re currently using. And I miss Robbie
We all miss Robbie.
In the words of Jake Peralta: "Chills, literal chills".
I look forward to the day someone says "critical role. I'm familiar"
I don't think I got any chiills but I sure couldn't stop my hands from clapping like a hummingbird seal
Now I want Andy Samberg to pop up.
It was Talisen, Talisen sacrificed my brother to C’thulu!
@@obsidianchilly oh my sarenrae I forgot about that part
That final shot when they’re all being in-character though!
Laudna: is terrifying
Travis: Is terrified
FCG: curiousity followed by pain (lmao)
Fearne: Thorn whip!
Imogen: Witchbolt!
Orym: Goading attack!
Ashton: Chaos Burst!
HELL YEAH!!!!
That is wild! Bravo to you for catching that! 💜
I totally missed this the first, um, few times I watched. Thank you for pointing it out!
Gotta be honest, I was thinking it. But I was thinking of like Archery for Ashley. I don’t know. You’re right though
I noticed with Talesin and Marisha, but I didn’t realize the rest of the team!
Does that mean Matt is Eshteross charging at them?
I would love to see a “making of” video from CR. I’m very interested in the ideas for this theme and how all the pieces came together.
that look on Laura's face as she is tossing dice into the air is aweseome
